Hi everyone – I’m sharing another snippet of my latest book “In the Shadows of a Lie” which releases this week. The story is mainly set in New Zealand and currently on special for 99c release day. Enjoy ♥♥

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Moving a strand of hair from her face, Lani pulled a piece of paper from her jacket pocket. She read the instructions from the bed and breakfast owner: Travel one and a half kilometres along the road before you come to a fork intersection. Follow the left for another kilometre. The property will be on your right.

She checked the road name once more although she knew it by heart, having checked it so many times during the bus ride, and stared at the gravel road in front of her. Apprehension trickled through her. She was alone, surrounded by nothing but the stunning scenery. Two and a half kilometres. Lani did a quick calculation. It was going to take her another hour. Now she wished she had rented a car.

She shook her head, because no matter how much she wished for a rental, she wouldn’t have been able to afford it. A wave of unease washed over her, and once again, she questioned her decision to come here.

BLURB

The discovery of her mother’s diaries unravels a secret which sends Lani on a journey to New Zealand …

She lost her mother in an accident. Now, Lani Dekker is determined to meet the man who, according to her mother’s diaries, is her father. He’s not what she expected, a bit on the extravagant side, but she soon warms up to him, thanks no less to Dylan, her father’s neighbour. Despite her attraction to Dylan, she can’t figure out whether he’s a friend or foe.

Dylan Harper is merely going through the daily motions after his wife died in a ski crash. That is, until his life is turned upside down by the arrival of his neighbour’s daughter. Their attraction is instant, even more so when they wake up in the same bed after an earthquake. However, it’s her accusation that his interest in her involves her father’s money rather than their mutual magnetism that derails their newfound bond.

Will finding the truth about her parents be a chance for Lani and Dylan to overcome their differences?

Today’s Snippet

“Why?” is all I can say, thinking this is all a bit creepy. “Are you always picking up girls at foreign airports.”

The finger leaves my chin and the smile on his face disappears. Even though I feel guilty of saying what I’ve said, but somehow the word sorry doesn’t want to go past my lips. It’s all a bit of an out-of-this-world experience and I haven’t been able to put the pieces together.

With one smooth motion, he stands up and grabs his bag. “I think it’s time to check in for the Frankfurt flight.”

I get the drift. I stepped on his toes. Flirting session is over. I still don’t feel guilty, because after four, okay five hours now, he was a bit too personal with his choice of words.

Mum’s words come back to me: You’re turning into an old and lonely woman if you don’t move on and forget about David.

Pikorua, the Maori name for the symbol, is a twist that is said to symbolise the strength of the bond between two people. Mat is certain there is something between Tiffany and him.

When Tiffany Cahill opens the door to the police, memories flood her mind of the previous year and a relationship gone bad. Frightened, she calls her friend, Steve, for help, but instead a stranger answers the phone. Little does Tiffany know how much this New Zealander is going to impact her life, especially after she is assaulted only a few hours later.

Mat Apanui, the owner of a helicopter tour company in New Zealand, can’t ignore the worry in Tiffany’s voice when he answers Steve’s phone. Before he knows it, he is spending most of his business trip to Melbourne with her. Desperate to keep her safe after an attack, he invites her to stay with him in Queenstown, NZ.

With her safety at risk, how will Tiffany overcome her reservations and trust the sexy stranger enough to fly across the Tasman Sea?

When Tiffany Cahill opened the door and laid eyes on the police officers, memories flooded back of the horrid day the year before when she’d been dragged to the police station. Everything inside her tensed as she checked the lever for the screen door to make sure it was locked. She rubbed her damp palms against her pants.
“Miss Cahill?” the male police officer asked, his dark brown eyes focussing on her.
Scared, she wasn’t able to find her voice, she bit her lip and simply nodded.
“Miss Tiffany Cahill?” the female, and younger, officer asked.
Tiffany nodded again. If she focussed on the officer’s flaming red hair beneath her cap, she wouldn’t have to meet her eyes. But she allowed herself a cautious peek at the officers’ faces. Their expressions were unreadable, which was worrying.
“I’m Senior Constable Jones. This is Sergeant Harris.” The officer paused for a moment. “We would like to ask you a couple of questions in regard to Thomas Terrill.”
“Who?” Tiffany asked, hardly above a whisper. Her whole body shook, and she knew she had to sit down soon or she’d faint.
“Thomas Terrill,” Jones repeated. “He was up on charges last year for the possession of drugs. The file states you were involved—”
“There’s no way I’ll come with you.” Her voice was louder than intended, panic rising within her. “You can’t make me—”
“Miss Cahill,” Jones said with a calm voice. “We’re not here to take you with us, but to ask you a few questions,” Sergeant Harris explained, pulling out a little notepad from his shirt pocket, opening it with an expert snap. “Is there anybody with you at home?”
Tiffany frowned as she shook her head. Anxiety raced through the pit of her stomach, and she had to resist the urge to step back to shut the door.
“Anybody you can call?”
His voice was soothing, and when Tiffany met his eyes through the screen door, she noticed something that conveyed trust. And there was a need inside her to trust him, yet every fibre in her told her to not open the door. Never again would she let the police take her to the station and treat her like a criminal. She bit her lip again, desperate to figure out whom to call, when she replied, “My brother.”
Harris nodded. “Thomas Terrill was charged with possession of drugs last year. You are noted as a witness.” He paused, checked his little notepad, and continued, “He’s also known as Hudson Ford.”
Leaning her head against the door, Tiffany took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Are you okay, Miss Cahill?” Harris asked. “Please open the door,” Jones requested.
Holding up her hand, Tiffany replied, “I haven’t seen him since last year. I have nothing to do with whatever trouble he’s in.” Her entire body trembled, anxiety rushing through her like a tidal wave. She took another two deep breaths before standing straight to meet Harris’ gaze. He searched her eyes before he assented with a nod and held out a business card. “We need to talk to you. I can assure you you’re not in trouble, but we need your help.” He squeezed the card into the small gap of the doorframe. “This is my number. Please call in when you have somebody with you, and we can have a talk.”

Today’s Snippet

“You wouldn’t have met me,” he says with a big grin plastered over his face. “True,” I reply.

“And we couldn’t have that, right?”

And then there’s a moment of silence between us, when I look into his eyes I feel as if I’ve known him for years. There is something so familiar and comforting reflecting from within. It gives me butterflies in my stomach, another flip, and I quickly look away. I startle a bit when I feel his finger under my chin to lift it towards him. I look around, desperate to for some distraction.

But I fail.

Miserably.

“I’d love to get to know you better,” he whispers.

I nearly faint. Hasn’t he got a life to pick up some girl, which admittedly, I am slightly odd behaving and not really myself.

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Lani Dekker adjusted her backpack as she watched the bus she had just exited drive off into the distance. She inhaled deeply, overcome for a moment by the stunning scenery in front of her with the snow-capped mountains and the striking royal blue Lake Tekapo in the distance. Melbourne, Australia, her hometown was a far cry from the view in front of her. Not a house in sight, no cars, just nature and chirping of birds in the distance. She could’ve enjoyed the panorama for a lot longer, but a quick glance at her watch told her she didn’t have much time left until the sun set. Still, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and took a few photos. The colours of the mountains, the lake, and the landscape were unlike anything she had seen before. The scenery in front of her was bright, intense, and so vibrant. She had never seen mountains like these before, being more used to the Victorian coastline, which was beautiful in its own rugged and raw kind of way, albeit different.

“Warrior Priest” by @KateHillRomance

Warrior Priest
by Kate Hill
Science Fiction Romance

Blurb
What happens when a warrior priest from a strict religion meets a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune?

Jade and Selena are as different as two people can be, but to facilitate an alliance between their worlds, they engage in a cultural exchange. With their galaxy in danger from a planet that wants to conquer or destroy all others, they realize the importance of their assignment, but it is difficult for a warrior priest and a nonviolent priestess to understand each other.

Selena is both attracted and appalled by his old school masculinity, and Jade is tempted to break his vow of celibacy until marriage due to his powerful desire for her. Will this unlikely pair not only find common ground, but unconditional love?

Excerpt
“I thought I saw my father.” Jade couldn’t believe he was confessing to her. “Back there at the waterfall. I heard him, and I saw him.”

Selena reached for his hand and squeezed it. “That’s what upset you? I dreamed about a bakery, and you dreamed about your dad.”

“I wasn’t dreaming. I didn’t fall asleep.”

Selena tilted her gaze up to his. “I’m not sure what to say. Have you ever seen a ghost before?”

“No, Selena! No, I’ve never seen a ghost, and I’m not crazy. I’m thinking that maybe this head wound is—”

“The scan was fine, Jade. Once we’re out of here, I can check again, but if the way you’re trekking through this cave is any indication, there’s nothing wrong with you physically.”

“You think I’m crazy, then?”

“No, I don’t think you’re crazy. I believe we might be able to communicate with spirits. My religion is based on a variety of beliefs that include the dead leaving imprints on the corporeal world. I also believe that sometimes ghosts aren’t about spirits reaching out from beyond, but about closure we need.”

“I never told him I loved him.” Jade’s stomached clenched. He felt more than a little embarrassed. There was no reason for him to tell her this. Still, he went on. “We didn’t talk much about feelings. Emotions are to be controlled. A lack of discipline can get you killed.”

“That’s true, I suppose. But pretending you don’t have emotions can kill you, too. Slowly. So you can’t ever be truly happy or even sad. It’s kind of like ignoring an injury. It won’t heal, or it’ll heal badly.”
