She tried the front door and it was unlocked, which actually surprised her.
“Not open,” Mac’s deep, rumbly voice called out from the back about a second before he stepped out from his workshop. His eyes widened when he saw her.
And he stood there looking like deer in headlights. Good.
“Adeline,” he began.
“A text? Seriously? You blow me off with a freaking text,” she snapped out, her boots stomping forward of their own volition. That burning fire that had spent days kindling was licking up her spine now as she worked up a good head of anger.
He closed his eyes briefly as he moved toward her. “Look, it’s not what you think.”
“Really? It’s not what I think? You didn’t send me a dismissive, crappy text about an hour before our date? After spending all that time together and becoming…friends.” Or she’d thought they had. Obviously she was wrong. “So you didn’t blow me off after all that? And then ignore me right in front of people on Main Street?” It was quite literally possible there was actual steam coming out of her ears right now.
Guilt flickered across his expression for a moment but then his face went carefully neutral. “Look, I didn’t know how else to handle it. I just don’t think we should see each other. I shouldn’t have ignored you and I should have called, but—”
She’d took another step forward, hands on hips, when the front door behind her swung open with a bang.
She jumped and turned to find some guy stalking in. He had on heavy-looking boots, jeans, a short-sleeved T-shirt, and there was a chain hanging from his back pocket attached to his belt. And he had some ugly-looking tattoos on his arms. Prison tats.

She shook her head at her body’s crazy reaction and with one final hiccupping sob, she picked up her jacket from the sand and walked across the dunes towards the parking lot. For the first time since Paige’s death, a sense of delight spread within her. It had only been a couple of minutes that she’d talked to Tyson, a stranger, but she liked him. She liked how he’d cared enough to stop and check on her. And with some surprise she admitted to herself how attracted she’d been to him.

Piper disconnected the call and looked towards the door. Why was she looking forward to the breakfast the next day? Hadn’t she learnt her lesson from her marriage with Darren, who so ungraciously left her, leaving her with nothing.
Letting out a soft sigh, she decided not to go to the breakfast. It was more important to focus on moving forward and not flirt with strange men … as nice as they might be.
The decision didn’t make her feel better, despite it being the right thing to do, and with her shoulders slouched, Piper went to the small bedroom, undressed, and returned to bed.

Ty rolled his eyes. His friends and football mates had teased him that at the age of twenty-eight, he still took his parents on holidays, but Ty couldn’t care less. His father’s health was crucial to him, and with the football pre-season not starting for a little while longer, he relished his time out of the spotlight. It’d been his first year as a pro footballer in the Australian Football League with a Melbourne club, and out of the twenty-two home and away games, he’d been on the field during most of the meets. His centre position as ruckman had given him plenty of opportunities to be part of the game— except when Toby McIntosh had knocked him out, giving him a nice concussion for two weeks.
Initially hesitating, he finally replied, Great surf. Great weather. Possibly great woman.
He might not see Katie again, but he’d be here for a few more days and was hopeful to cross paths with her again in this small town. An air of mystery had surrounded her, and he was eager to find out more. And with a grin he wasn’t able to wipe off his face, he returned to the rental house.

Had she imagined the amusement in his voice?
“I…I meant … as in … it’s no hassle, as in I’m grateful you let me stay here. I can’t expect you to keep the other side empty because of …” She had no idea whether she was making it worse with stuttering some nonsense. What would he think of her? That she was already hooking up with another man? “Anyway,” she added in barely more than a whisper. “Thanks for checking in on me. I really appreciate it.”
“Hey Piper? You’ll get through this. I’m sure of it. There are better times ahead.”
She closed her eyes, holding back the tears. Yes, she deserved some better times. And not just better times, but good times. The image of her neighbour popped into her mind and a smile tugged at her lips.
“I live in hope,” she replied, as she thought of her breakfast invitation in the morning.
