It was the surname. She was sure it would’ve pained Jack to know that his only son wasn’t carrying his surname. Emily blinked, fighting back tears.

“Jack,” she said, walking towards him. “I think you’d better go back inside. I’ll be back on Wednesday.”

The old man nodded and tried to stand up. Connor rushed to his side to help, and seeing the two next to each other, she was surprised by the resemblance between them.

Inside, she said goodbye and walked to the front of the house. Connor followed her to the door, but before he opened it, he asked quietly, “How long does he have?”

This week’s Hook …

As Emma placed the folder next to her desktop and logged onto the computer, she quickly recounted the events from earlier that morning and then attended to the guests who had arrived. She tried not to put too much attention to how abruptly Mrs Gibbs had taken Nadine off the chair, but it stirred something inside her. Something she wasn’t able to define. Possibly hurt for the girl or the urge to give her a hug.

She shook her thoughts out of her head and focussed on work. It wasn’t a busy morning, and fortunately, Jack took over most of the check-ins. Which meant during her daily routine, Emma was able to call just about every babysitter and nanny service in town. But to no avail. She grew increasingly nervous the closer it drew to lunchtime. Desperate, she placed the folder back into the drawer and searched the phone directory. There weren’t many more listings, but Emma took the pencil from behind her ear, and as she was about to jot down another number, she saw a man in a dark business suit entering the hotel lobby through the big, revolving glass door. Unable to stop staring at him, she watched him stepping towards the reception desk in quick, long strides.

“Em, you’re starring again,” Jack whispered.

Innocent Tears by Iris Blobel is an intriguing romance within a romance. The reader’s attention is captured from the first page to the very last sentence, which is most unexpected. The journey that the author takes the reader on has so many twists and turns that at times the reader will wonder if it will come to a romantic conclusion as themes of human nature, both good, bad, indifferent, confused, and loving race through the book. Iris Blobel uses the characters’ natures to good advantage as she spins her tale of love, loss, and romance.

The author has used situations that are both good, bad, and downright scary, which her main characters get themselves into, to keep the reader on their toes with fear, hope, and joy that the story will have a happy ending. Readers will find themselves enthralled by the lives of Emma, Flynn McCormack, Theresa, William Gibbs, Mr. Morgan, Jack, Fran, Jacqui and not forgetting the star of the story, Nadine, better known as Naddie. These main characters appear and reappear throughout the plot.

This interesting book is very well worth reading. It is light but holds your attention to the end. The author brings her beautiful love story to an unexpected climactic conclusion. Thank you, Iris, for a relaxing yet nail-biting and exciting read. Innocent Tears will make the hours in a day fly, especially when waiting in doctors’ rooms and airports. Much appreciated.

Blurb:

Becoming a parent can be daunting at the best of times, but for Flynn McCormack, a business lawyer in Melbourne, it pulls the feet right out from underneath him. He’s become a father to six-year-old Nadine literally overnight. He didn’t know about her existence, and the news throws him into chaos, even more so when he is asked to take over custody.

With the help of Emma, an employee at the hotel where Nadine and her grandparents are staying, Flynn tries to do the right thing. Yet, the right thing in his eyes differs from his parents’ ideas, and Emma is voicing her opinion, too, leaving Nadine right in the middle of it all, still grieving the loss of her mother. There’s no doubt she’s afraid about where and with whom she will settle.

Will a letter Flynn receives help him decide what to do?

The way he spoke made Emily think there was also a slight pain in his voice. Another dead end in the conversation.

The first raindrops fell, and she checked her watch.

“I’d better be going. I’ll be back on Wednesday.”

Connor said his thanks before Emily turned to leave. She was startled, though, by Jack’s expression. The sadness stored from over twenty years was obvious in that moment. He must’ve heard their conversation, and she thought back on what had been said.

He scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry for that.”

“Is there a Mrs Delaney?” Emily tried to sound as casual as possible, but wasn’t sure whether it’d come across that way. The expression on his face revealed a touch of disbelief.

“You should know better than me. After all, you’ve known Jack longer than me.”

Emily didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I meant you,” she finally replied in a whisper, hoping not to put more salt in what seemed an open wound.

The expression on his face changed to pained, his lips turned downwards. “My surname is Walsh. And no, there’s no Mrs Walsh.”

This week’s Hook …

And without any more words or thanks, she left with her granddaughter in tow. Emma gave a little wave to Nadine before she was out of her sight.

Rubbing her temples, she finished her breakfast, returned her dishes to the kitchen, and made her way to the reception area. She caught up with her friend, Jacqueline, before taking over her shift at the reception. Jacqui had worked with Emma for a few months now, and they’d got along from the very first day they shared reception duty. Until a few days back, anyway. Recent remarks by Jacqui regarding some of Jack’s attributes didn’t sit well with Emma and it was still hurtful and upsetting her. Jacqui was in her early twenties as well and had moved to Melbourne from a little town northwest of the state. She was tall and slender, with slim hips and curves in just the right places. Emma had envied her thick dark hair from the very beginning.

Today was an unusually quiet morning as Emma glanced across the hotel lobby. The spacious entrance lit up with crystal chandeliers in contrast to the contemporary colours of the sand-coloured marble floor and the walnut panelling on the walls. Again, Emma gazed enviously at the chocolate-brown coloured furnishings, which were, according to management, strategically selected and arranged to allow a visual play of light and space. She loved that slogan. It had so many words but didn’t say anything at all.

Nightshifts at the reception were usually done by Jacqueline, who studied Business Management during the day.

“Hey, Jacqui?”

“Hmm?”

“How do I get a babysitter for this afternoon?”

Jacqui stared at Emma and slowly lifted her eyebrows. “A babysitter?”

“Yes, for room five-O-two. They need a babysitter for their granddaughter.”

“Wow, Em, you’ve just given me a fright.”

Connor nodded. “Sure. Just give me a bit longer to settle in.”

Disappointed, she assented. And understood. After all, he’d only stepped off a plane after twenty-four hours two days ago, to see his father for the first time in such a long time. “No worries. I let the boys know. Skye moved away a few years ago.”

His look told her that the name didn’t ring a bell, either.

“You’ve really been hit hard with jetlag.”
