#New in more than one way: #Preorder #romancebook #NEWBEGINNINGS

~~  New Beginnings ~~
(2nd Edition)
by Iris Blobel

The story is set in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, the most southern state in Australia. A most beautiful place. I went there a few years back and imagined how it would be to live in this city, how to adapt as a “non-local”, and bit by bit I wrote the story of two sisters moving there.

Obviously, I added a little romance into the story as well – so I added Mark and Zach.

This is the second edition of NEW BEGINNINGS.

The story is now a bit sexier and has also received another edit.

“Other people have to fight battles in their life as well.”

Only $1.99

Blurb:

Sex, drugs, and country music. That was the liHeartsong_250x375festyle for Emily Kendall, a Texas girl who hit it big on the country music charts—until she found herself pregnant and battling addiction. Now out of rehab and seeking a new life for herself and her unborn child, Emily returns to her hometown of McAllister. The last thing she’s looking for is trouble, no matter how good it looks in uniform…

A widower, single father, and former Army Ranger struggling with PTSD, Sheriff EJ Cowley has his own demons to battle while keeping folks safe. The last thing he needs is a troubled celebrity speeding through town in her bright red Maserati. But when someone from Emily’s past threatens her safety and the peace of McAllister, EJ has no choice but to protect her. And soon both will learn there’s more to the other than meets the eye. And that wounded hearts can love again…

Excerpt:

Emily refolded the two pairs and headed out to the display of jeans. As she put the pants back into their slots, she glanced around to see if anyone was close enough to see her. Her heart pounded in time with the fast beat of the song playing over the sound system as she reached the cubbyholes marked maternity. With another discreet look around, she picked out three pairs in her size and headed back to the tiny dressing room.

The jeans fit perfectly, but how the hell was she going to buy them? She refolded the pants, tucked them under her arm, and went to the shoe section. While she looked for a pair of boots, she devised a plan. If she was lucky, maybe no one would notice she’d bought maternity jeans.

“I personally like Justin boots, but I work in mine.”

She sucked in a breath at the low timbre of EJ’s voice behind her. Was he everywhere in this town? Turning with a box of boots, she smiled. “It would seem that we have something in common then. I’ve always like them, too.”

He raised a brow and a side of his mouth quirked up when he noticed the boots she’d chosen. A basic pair used mostly for riding and work. “You taking up cowboying now?”

She set the clothes she’d chosen on the bench beside her and sat to try on the boots. As she slipped off her flip-flops, she dug a pair of socks out of her purse. “Not that it’s any of your business, but I need a pair of boots to ride in.” She looked up at him with a smug smile. “Now that you know why I’m here.” She looked over his uniform. Tan polyester blend shouldn’t fit a man that sinfully well. “You’re obviously working. I want to know why you’re following me.”

He rubbed a hand over his chin and averted his gaze. “I…eh… Saw you come into the store and wanted to ask if you’d join me for coffee.”

Was he asking her out on a date? Trying hard and failing to stop her heart from speeding up at the possibility, she pulled on her socks. “I don’t drink coffee.”

“Well, then I guess you’ll have to join me for lunch.”

As she tugged on one of the boots, she looked up at him. His pewter eyes held a challenge in them. She pulled on the other one and stood. Damn, they were too tight. Ignoring the pinching of the boots, she put her hands on her hips. “Tell you what. You can drink coffee and I’ll drink tea, how does that sound? I had breakfast not too long ago.”

He glanced at her feet, then knelt down in front of her.

“What are you doing?” She took a step back, but he caught her foot.

“You look like you’re trying to stuff your feet into a shoe three sizes too small.” He squeezed around her booted foot, then glanced up at her. “Boots are supposed to fit like a glove not a vise.”

Holy hell, he looked hot down there. She couldn’t get enough air in her lungs.

EJ stood and pulled the next size off the self. “Try these.”

He was close enough that every breath she took filled her senses with his clean outdoorsy scent. How could a man smell this good?

“Are you a boot salesman as well as the sheriff?” Did that husky voice belong to her?

“I know something about boots.” He grinned, showing off straight white teeth and full kissable lips.

Stepping back, she bumped into her pile of clothes on the bench, knocking them to the floor in front of him. Before she could bend to pick them up, he knelt and gathered up a pair of the jeans. When he shifted his surprised gaze to hers, she trembled as icy fear replaced the heat of attraction in her gut.

She knelt next to him and took a deep breath. In a low tone, she said, “Yes, I’m pregnant, but I’m not ready to let it be common knowledge.”

He refolded the jeans and set them on the bench. “Then your secret is safe with me. How were you planning to buy these? The clerk would see what they are.”

She set a folded pair on top of the one he’d placed on the bench and shifted to sit beside them. “I know. I was hoping I could distract her enough that she wouldn’t notice what she was ringing through.”

He leaned against the shelf of boots behind him. “Not a half-bad plan.”

Needing to do something besides stare at him, she lifted one of the boots out of the box he’d given her and pulled it on. A much better fit. She slipped into the other boot.

“You could let me buy them.”

Blurb:

Eric Sadler needs a break from the woods. His writing career has hit a dead-end and he’s desperate to figure out how to break into publishing. He accepts a temporary teaching position at his alma mater and meets a woman he can’t stop thinking about. Unfortunately for him, it turns out he’s already forgotten her from his long-ago college days.EB

Jennifer Campbell has too much going on to worry about running into her undergrad crush. She’s trying to find a way forward after an ugly break-up has threatened her career. She built a successful branding business one client at a time. She knows how to help get a company to the next level. Her skill set is exactly what Eric needs. But she knows better than to blur her professional and personal lives again.
Eric has no intention of letting her slip away…this time.

Excerpt:

Sitting cross-legged on her best-friend’s guest bed, Jennifer Campbell scanned the notes she’d jotted down on the spiral bound notebook. Her mind blanked as the words bled into one another. Agreeing to teach a semester long seminar at her alma mater had been easy and opportune. But actually planning her lectures and lessons ten years after graduating college had proved a difficult task. A knock sounded at the door seconds before the door burst open and the knob banged against the wall.

“Cookie?” Rebecca held out a platter overflowing with chocolate chip cookies.

Jen slid off the bed and held out her hands to grab the treats from her pregnant best friend.

“Cookies too? Becs, you should be resting!” Jen set the platter on the nightstand and offered a hand to help. But Rebecca waved her off and lowered herself onto the end of the bed. The mattress tilted a little when Jen joined her.

“You sound like Tom,” Rebecca stuffed a cookie in her mouth, crumbs spilling out at her words.

Jen bit her lip to stop the reply. Being compared to Tom, Rebecca’s adoring and steady husband, wasn’t a bad thing. She grabbed the plate off the table and set it between them, taking a bite reached for a cookie off the plate now resting in her lap and took a bite. The bitter dark chocolate and sweet brown sugar nearly had her swooning.

“These are sinful.”

“And there are plenty more,” Rebecca wiped the back of her hand across her mouth. “I had a craving and couldn’t stop making dough. If you want one, just look for the bag in the freezer.”

“So right now in your kitchen you have a giant bag of cookie dough? Why did you have to tell me? Even looking at a cookie makes me gain five pounds!”

“You look great, as always. I’d love to be a size twelve again. I’d love to be able to see my waist!”

Jen fought against her inclination to roll her eyes. Eating in an upstairs bedroom in a snug bungalow on a quiet street in Bloomington, Indiana both dressed in pajama pants and oversized t-shirts, transported Jen back in time. But the warmth and safety of the future had evaporated for Jen with the mistakes she’d made since leaving the college town. Rebecca’s protruding tummy only served as a reminder of the twists and complications of her adult life.

“Rebecca, thanks again. I have no idea where I would have ended up.”

“You’re welcome Jen. But stop thanking me. I have a spare room, you’re only here for a couple of months, and what would you have done? Gone to an extended stay?

“Or maybe a dorm?”

“Ugh, gross,” Rebecca shuddered. “I’m glad to have you here. We haven’t gotten together since, my wedding? And geez, even then I was so distracted.”

“Yeah it is nice. Weird, all things considered.”

“I’m sure,” Rebecca nodded before reaching out to put a hand on Jen’s knee. Jen shifted and Rebecca let her hand slid off. “I’m sorry about that.”

“No you aren’t,” Jen crossed her arms. “You told me my relationship was a dead end years ago.”

“True, but I didn’t want you to waste so much time.”

Fearless of the Fall

By Amanda Hess

Back cover blurb:

Everything crumbled after Abby’s tragedy, even her close friendship with Jesse.  But Ashleigh never leaves her, and doesn’t press for details.  Distanced from everyone else, Abby finds solace in riding Motocross.  After Jesse steps back into Abby’s life and offers his friendship once more, things slowly begin to return to normal.  But explaining her reason for not speaking to him for seven months is too traumatic for Abby to reveal._aHess

Just when it seems they’re becoming more than friends, Abby and Jesse face a horrific storm, which incredibly brings them into an even closer proximity.  Due to the overwhelming damage, Jesse and his family stay at Abby’s house for a while.  However, passing in the upstairs hallway at home is vastly different than passing in the hallway at school. Something between them has changed, and not for the better.

There are so many things that go unspoken, including Abby’s upcoming departure for college out of state, but neither of them seems to be able to connect.  Maybe it’s best they just remain friends so that Abby can focus only on the upcoming Motocross competition.

But the arrival of Pamela, a pretty transfer student and fellow rider, complicates everything and Jesse makes a huge mistake.

Can Abby forgive him?  Or will Pamela win everything?

Book Excerpt:

“Come on Abby, we have to go to the basement.”  Jesse shook my shoulder.

“But, why?’’ I complained, hearing a weird sound I couldn’t place.

“The storm has gotten worse.  We need to get in the basement now!”  He urged me pulling me up by the hand and running down the hall to the basement steps.

We hurried down the steps as this noise grew louder.  My sinuses ached and my head felt like it was being squeezed.  Jesse threw me in a closet pulling the door shut behind him.  He pushed me as far into the back corner as he could. Pulling me down to the floor, he threw a heavy blanket over us.  My mind was slowly registering what was going on.  I started to shake.  Jesse picked up on this and gathered me up in his arms tightly.

“I am right here Abby.  We will be okay.”  He whispered in the dark.

“Jess-“ I started to say as a horrible noise came from outside the door.

I threw my hands over my ears and screamed.  Jesse pulled my head into his chest shielding me while he gathered the rest of my body on his lap.

“It’s okay baby, everything will be alright,” he cooed in my ear.

The house shook all around us.  Things were falling in on us from the shelves in the closet.  I could feel the air rushing under the crack of the door.  I heard the door being ripped off and felt the wind rushing all around us.  I could hear myself whimpering.  Jesse held on to me tightly. I kept my eyes tightly shut and prayed.

“It’s okay baby, almost over.” Jesse shouted over the noise.  I held on tighter. I whimpered from the pain in my head and sinuses.

“You’re okay Abby, everything will be okay!”

It felt like time was standing still.

When the shaking of the house slowly stopped and everything seemed to calm down, I slowly released my death-grip on Jesse and opened my eyes one at a time. My brain could not put together what my eyes saw.  Through where the closet door had been in the basement I could see the sky.  I looked wildly at Jesse, who had some blood on his face and arm.  I quickly disentangled myself from him and began giving him the once-over.  He had been hit by some debris that cut a small space on his cheek.  Most of the damage was on his arm.  Nothing serious, but enough to be messy.  He was checking me for injuries the same time I was working on cleaning up his arm with the blanket. He seemed satisfied with the results and pulled me hard against him in a crushing hug.  I returned his sentiments just as violently.

“Abby, I am so glad you are alright.”  He whispered with tears in his eyes.

“I am fine Jess, are you sure that you are okay?”  I asked, tears swimming in my eyes.

“We are alive, thank God!”  Jesse praised sniffing.  A tear escaped from my eye and rolled down my cheek.

“Abby-“ Jesse groaned meeting my eyes and thumbing away the tear.  He kissed me softly on the lips, it wasn’t long, but it made my insides turn to jelly.

intervenes.
Brief Excerpt
(I love to include meddling,  humorous, and often wise aunts or servants in my books. In this excerpt, Lovena, the housemaid, is there for Olivia in every crisis.)
Lovena’s head snapped toward the sound of the slammed door, nearly dropping the dish she’d just dried. “Livie, what’s wrong?”
Olivia’s eyes blurred with unshed tears.
Setting down the dish, Lovena went to her.
“You better take a seat and breath. I’m guessin’ you and your beau had a
fight.” She led her to a chair.
“Has he left?” Olivia lips trembled as her eyes darted toward the closed door.
Lovena walked over to the window that faced the porch, the one she used to keep a cautious eye on her charge. “He’s climbin’ into his carriage and he lookin’ none too happy.”
Olivia walked to the table and sank into a chair. “William is not my beau though it appears everyone else believes so. He has done a better job courting my father than courting me,” Olivia burst out before covering her mouth and looking toward the parlor.
“Your father’s gone up to bed. He left me to keep an eye out for you. You look like you need to talk.”
“William believes it is God’s will we marry. He’s already talked to Father and received his blessing. What was I to say?  Do I even have a voice in the matter?”
Lovena’s large bosom lifted and sagged.
She shook her head. “You been spending time with Mr. Tapley, goin’ for walks
and carriage rides. Didn’t you plan to go with him to the spring dance the town
been plannin’ after Easter?  In his mind, you and him were courtin’ in a respectful way.”
“Most of the time he was conversing with Father.” Olivia’s shoulders slumped. Had she led him to believe she was expecting a proposal? “I admit I was flattered by his attentions at first, but I hadn’t considered our relationship went beyond friendship…until recently.”
“A man’s attentions to a pretty young woman ain’t never a desire for only friendship.”
“I hadn’t meant to lead him to thinking I’d want to marry him.” She covered her face with her hands.
Lovena pushed out a chair and sat beside her. “I think you been enjoyin’ Mr. Tapley’s attentions until the Pratt boy started showin’ up.”
Olivia couldn’t deny it. At first she was flattered by William’s desire to spend time with her but deeper feelings hadn’t grown, despite the time they spent together. Even his kisses were forgettable. It was so different with Ben. Her heart leaped in her chest the minute she saw him arrive to begin his work. Her body tingled into the depth of her womb when they were together.
Lovena wiped away a tear that rolled down Olivia’s cheek. “We can’t control those feelin`s inside, Livie, when the right boy stirs ‘em up.”
“What am I to do?”  she pleaded. “Father will understand, won’t
he? He can’t expect me to agree to marry a man I could never love.”

Excerpt 1
An hour later, she was sitting at the bar at The Pit and was on her third beer. She was tired and emotional and probably—no definitely—should have curled up in bed with a book that promised her a happily ever after.
“Hey there.” Todd Kowalski slid onto the barstool next to her. Todd was Mike’s identical twin brother and one of her oldest friends. The twins looked the same to the untrained eye, but Marissa’s eye was very well trained indeed.
“Hey, Todd. How’s it hanging?”
Marissa knew Todd had a faint scar in his right eyebrow where Mike had hit him with a Frisbee as kids. She knew that when Mike smiled the left side his mouth rose first and the reverse was true for Todd. She knew that her heart beat a bit faster near Mike and inexplicably never had near Todd.
“How’s it hanging?” He raised his eyebrows at her.

“I’m working on some new material,” she replied.

“Keep working.” He raised the beer that had been placed in front of him to her. “Cheers.”

“Good day?”

“Just work.”

The town thought Todd was a graphic designer, which he was. What they didn’t know was that he had also invented the online gaming app, Jungle Jam, and was currently worth an absolute bucket-load of money. She knew and Mike knew, and well, that was about it.

“Anything new?”

He nodded. “Yep, nearly done. I’m kind of excited.”

“Good for you,” she said, but her voice sounded flat even to her.

“You don’t seem happy tonight. Anything I can do to cheer you up?”

“I’m just in a funk. My folks are moving, I’ve wasted my twenties, and I’m a lonely librarian . . .”

“Ah, so nothing major.” He gave her a gentle shove with his elbow.

“Exactly.” She took a swig of her beer.

“What number is that, honey?” He pointed to her drink.

“Three.”

“I’ll drive you home.”

“Thanks, Todd. You really should find a nice girl to lavish your kindness on.”

“Yeah, thanks, but no thanks. I’m very happy being single and hanging out with you.”

“Who’s happy being single?” She’d know that voice anywhere. Not that she didn’t hear it practically every day. She looked over her shoulder and took him in. Dark hair, NYU sweatshirt, and jeans. Nothing that should make a girl’s heart flip, and yet hers did an elegant somersault.

“Your brother, of course.”

Mike slid onto the barstool on her other side. It was pretty standard. She was the rose between two thorns. “I see.”

They sat there in amicable silence. Or so it seemed. To the whole town, they were just three friends who hung out. It wasn’t like that, not really. Marissa had been in love with Mike for as long as she could remember, and Todd knew that as well. Meanwhile Mike, the object of her infatuation, acted, or was, oblivious. It was the routine they’d fallen into when they all drifted back to town. Not that Marissa usually drank at The Pit; that alone was out of the ordinary. She was only here because Lucy and Chase were in town. For years, she’d spent her weekends being bossed around by her mother or Patty, an old high school frenemy who bossed half the town around. Lately, she’d withdrawn even more and either went and played video games with Todd or was home with her folks.

Lucy and Chase came in with a whoosh of cool air, and they all moved over to a table.

“How is it at your mom’s?” she asked Lucy.

“It’s nice. That makes it weird in itself. I’m not used to nice.” She eyed Marissa. “Do you usually drink beer?”

“I’m trying new things.” She shrugged.

“How’s that working for you?”

“I’m on my third.” Lucy looked shocked. Even when they’d been at college together, she’d never been a beer drinker or much of a drinker at all. “Todd’s dropping me home. Don’t worry. I’m notoriously sensible.”

“I know. I’m a little worried about you,” her friend said, giving her arm a squeeze.

“I guess I just have some stuff to work out. Like who I am, what I want, and where I’m heading.”

“Just the simple stuff then?”

“That’s what Todd said.” She sighed.

“It is going to be okay, Marissa.” Her friend patted her hand.

“Yeah, if you say so.”

Excerpt:
He bent toward her, wrapped one arm around her waist, the other around her back, then buried his face in the crook of her neck and inhaled. Relishing the feel of her body melded against his, he forgot the worries consuming him. She soothed his ache with a mere touch, with a mere embrace. Exactly what he’d wanted, exactly what he needed. She then pressed her full lips against his cheek, kissing him lightly.
An innocent kiss. There was no passion behind it, but an  unconscious consuming need, one he’d never felt, swelled inside him—desire. It was exciting, overwhelming and terrifying, blocking logic and reason. All he wanted now was a single kiss. All he could think about was how her soft lips would feel pressed against his.
Marvelous, he concluded. It was absurd to want what he did and feel what he felt, for he was an angel. Carnal desires even as insignificant as kisses were for others, for all others except his breed, and yet he felt it so deeply it seared him.
The desire that gripped him didn’t release him even after she unhooked her arms from around his neck, and the warmth of her body melted away. There he stood, immobile, battling the desire she’d sparked. He didn’t want to leave yet knew he had to before he’d acted out his longing. He willed his body to move. Finally, he placed one foot behind the other, stepped back and strode away praying the yearning he had no right to feel for a woman who would never be his would soon subside.

Tagline:
Will their emotional firestorm leave nothing but ashes or can love emerge victorious?

Excerpt:
Jesse leaned against a tree to draw in a few deep breaths. As he straightened, he plucked his ball cap off his head and wiped his forearm across his brow, then hooted a victory cheer. “Hard work’s over. Time for the reward.”

He dropped the cap onto the sand and emptied his pockets into it. Then he pulled his T-shirt over muscled shoulders, dropped it onto the sand on top of his cap, and made quick work of his footwear. Drey stared in disbelief as he beelined down the beach and ran straight into the low surf. When he was hip-deep in the water,he slipped smoothly beneath the surface. He reappeared several feet out and turned to wave.

“Join me,” he called. “The water’s great.”

“Not a chance. The ocean is cold in summer, I can only imagine how frigid it must be today.”

“Wuss,” he scoffed and splashed water in her direction.

Shivers thathad nothing to do with feeling chilly shot through Drey as she watched him emerge from the water a few minutes later. Rivulets ran down his chest, following the ridges and planes of his brawny body. Wet shorts clung to muscular thighs.

He ran his hands over his face and then shook himself like a playful pup. “You don’t know what you missed. Nothing like a dip in the salt chuck to get the heart pumping. Well, almost nothing.” He stalked deliberately up the beach toward her, and the look on his face made her back away, but she didn’t react fast enough. He caught her up in his arms, laughing at her shrieks of protest.

“Lemme go, Jesse. You’re cold. Come on, Jesse, lemme go. You’re getting me all wet.”

“That’s the whole idea. Get you wet and me warm.”

She gave him a firm push in the wrong direction as she sprinted down the beach. “Not if you can’t catch me,” she threw over her shoulder as she went.
