FLY WITH ME

This is Tiffany’s story, who receives a call from the police one morning forcing her to deal with a chapter from her past, which she is unhappy to revisit. When she calls her friend Dylan, it’s Mat from New Zealand she ends up talking to.

This is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

He thought of his friend’s comment about Tiffany’s rough year. Worry shot through him, and he wished he’d copied her number to his phone.

The sound of her voice was still playing in his head. A tone that stoked angst and concern.

Exhaling a long breath, Mat focussed back to the problem at hand and listened to the GPS directions — as well as following them. Thankfully, within only half an hour he found himself in an office opposite Karen Young, the representative of an Australian travelling agency.

A few months earlier, Mat had lost the coin toss between him and his partner Adam, and it was him now who was in Melbourne trying to negotiate a deal with Karen.

Mat and Adam had started their helicopter business five years ago in Fox Glacier, New Zealand. They’d liked the idea of doing what they loved every day and meeting people from all over the world at the same time. Now they flew hundreds of tourists to the summit of the glacier or hunters and hikers to inaccessible huts on the top of the mountains.

Today he was here to negotiate a deal to be part of a travel package for tourists, which included another venture in Queenstown, his hometown. He stepped into her small office, instantly overcome by some mild claustrophobia when he saw a small window with no view, but showing the walls of the building next door. Inhaling a breath, he forced himself to take in the rest of the office which was nicely decorated, with framed photos from all over the world.

Including his beloved Queenstown.

My #Beginnings #Christmas #ShortStory – #Romance #MFRWAuthor

Over the last few years I wrote a few books about sisters Sophie and Mia Levesque. Book #1 tells their story inheriting a house in Hobart / Tasmania without knowing who the generous testator was.

There’s also More Beginnings (currently re-edited) following Mia into teenage years, Fresh Beginnings, which takes her to the USA, and Little Beginnings, a story written for my wonderful friend.
Loving the characters so much … I gave them a little Christmas Story.

ENJOY ♥♥♥

Sophie Levesque breathed in and out, in and out, trying hard to ignore the pain, and hoping for the paramedics to arrive soon.
“Sure, you don’t want me to drive you to the hospital?” her husband Mark asked.
She glared at him as she breathed in and out again.
Her sister Mia gently placed a pillow under her head. “Keep breathing. In … and … out.”
Sophie grabbed her sister’s wrist. “I know what to do,” she said through gritted teeth.
“Geesh,” Mia’s fiancée Josh commented. “A bit touchy isn’t she.”
The doorbell rang and Josh headed towards the front door. Sophie heard muffled voices and a bark of laughter.
“Great timing, Soph,” Zach said as he stepped into the room, closely followed by his wife, Natasha. “The Christmas Eve service is starting in half an hour.”
An urge to push overwhelmed Sophie, and she squeezed Mia’s wrist and reached out for Mark’s hand.
“No pushing, honey. Don’t push. Breathe, keep on breathing.”
If Sophie could’ve, she’d hit him with another glare.
Natasha came closer and sat next to her. “Aiming for your own little Christmas story, are you?”
“Okay, everyone,” Sophie panted. “Forget the paramedics. Get whatever it is you need to deliver a baby.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed helpless stares. “Go!” she screamed as the next urge to push hit her.
“I think I heard something about warm water,” someone said.
“And towels.”
“A blanket.”
When Mark made a move to leave, she held on tight to his hand. “You,” she gasped. “You stay here.”
He nodded. “What do you want me to do?”
“You need to look whether you can see the baby.”
Mark’s eyebrows shot up as he paled.
“Oh for God’s sake, Mark. Nothing you haven’t seen before.”
“Well,” he stuttered. “They were different circumstances.”
“Get used to these circumstances,” she screamed as another wave of pain hit her.
Mark moved her dress up her legs and took off her panties. “Honey, it’s not the best sight, but … oh my God …”
“What?”
“I can see the head,” he said excitedly. “Holy shit.”
Mia returned with the water, Natasha had some towels in her hands, and Zach gave her a sip of water. In the corner of the room sat Josh, right next to the Christmas tree with the phone in his hand, pale as a block of goat cheese, taking instructions from the doctor.
Over the next fifteen minutes, Sophie pushed, screamed, and ordered everyone around. By the time the paramedics arrived, Sophie held a little baby in her arms, with Mark by her side.
“It seems we’re late,” one of the paramedics said with a smile. He stepped closer and knelt in front of Sophie. “What’s his name?”
“Her name is Natalie.”
“Perfect and so appropriate. Congratulations.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Mat’s laughter echoed in the small car as he turned off the engine and got out. With a few long strides, he headed towards the café. “Does Jess know about her?”
There was a groan on the other end of the line. “You start any rumours and I will kill you.”
As he stepped inside the cafe, Mat replied, “In all seriousness, mate, Tiffany was desperate to talk to you. You’d better give her a call, aye.”
“I’ve already talked to her, but I don’t—”
“I’m glad she was able to get hold of you. It was obvious she needed to talk to you.”
Mat held his phone away for a moment, smiled at the young woman behind the counter, and ordered his coffee.
”You’re still there?” Dylan asked with a loud voice.
Mat shook his head with a smile and explained. “Mate, I’d say even in Australia it’s considered rude to talk on the phone while ordering your coffee.”
His friend’s resigned sigh gave him another chuckle.
“Mate, if you’ve already talked to her, we’re all good, aye.”
“To be frank, I’m completely lost here. How the hell do you know about Tiff? Give me the courtesy and give me a quick run down of what’s happened.”

The GPS voice in Matiu Apanui’s car had as little of a clue as he did about the directions how to get to his meeting place and after only half an hour he was still on the western side of Melbourne instead of in the city. The explanation was as simple as Tiffany was on his mind. He replayed the phone conversation repeatedly in his head. It was clear to him something must’ve upset her. Even though she’d relaxed during their short conversation, he’d been able to sense the tension in her voice.
“Shit,” he shouted as he pressed the speed dial button on his phone, remembering he’d never left a note for his friend.
“Mate, where are you?” Dylan asked by way of answering.
“I have no idea. Near a big park. Looks pretty with the tree alongside the walking tracks. Had no idea Melbourne had all these deciduous trees—”
“Mat!”
“The lovely GPS lady took me on a tourist tour first it seems. I’m considering stopping for a coffee and reboot her at the same time.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Mat noticed the frustration in his friend’s voice and asked bluntly, “Tell me about your girlfriend.”

Snippet Sunday – FLY WITH ME – 27/11/2016 #romance #love #SnippetSunday

Welcome back!
My apologies for the silence over the last few weeks, but life threw me a curve ball of the biggest proportions. We’re dealing with it as best as we can and are looking positively towards the future. I do hope I’ll be able to post every week as I undergo treatment for cancer, but apologise in advance if I won’t be able to read or comment on your wonderful stories. I’ve missed them so much over the last few weeks and can’t wait to stop by again.

Anyway …..

“Thanks Mat. Yes I’ll be fine.” It wasn’t a big lie, because at that moment she was feeling better.
She hung up and noticed a smile on her face. And instead of a churning stomach, butterflies had made themselves comfortable. She thought of how easy the conversation had flowed and how attentive he’d been. And his voice. She liked his voice. It’d been deep and calm, smooth and articulate. She closed her eyes and remembered his accent. It hadn’t been strong, but still obvious to her.
And then there’d been his laugh. God, his laugh. It had turned her inside out.
With a big exhale, she covered her face with her hands, surprised at herself that at a day she had to face the police, she was drooling over a man she’d never met, but only talked to.
For a few minutes, if at all.
The police. A ripple of worry went through her and she stood in search for her phone to give Dylan another call. This time on his mobile.

“After his girlfriend I’m the next most important person in Dylan’s life,” she said trying hard to match his humour. “And there’s never been a mention of a person named Mat. I’m pretty certain of that.”
“Damn the little bugger. Here I thought we were best buddies.” He paused for a moment then said, “Tell me, Tiffany, why were you so upset?”
“You tell me first how Dylan knows someone from New Zealand?”
He laughed again and it was one of those laughs that were contagious, but also one that told everyone this person loved to laugh. “You picked up on that, aye?”
“Educated guess.”
There was silence before he explained. “Dylan and I went to school together in Sydney and have stayed in contact since.”
She remembered that Dylan had grown up in Sydney, but had moved to Melbourne in his early teens because of his father’s job.
Mat’s voice brought her back from her thoughts and before she was able to reply, he said, “Darling, I love talking to you, but I’ve got to be somewhere in an hour. Can you promise me you’ll be okay?”

“I hit the redial button,” he replied nonchalantly.
A smile twitched at Tiffany’s lips. He was clever. And he cared. “It’s Tiffany. My name is Tiffany.”
“Nice meeting you Tiffany, even though it’s over the phone. So, you’re sure you’re okay?”
Tiffany hesitated, but noticed how talking to him calmed her. “Who are you?”
“My name’s Mat, but I’ve already told you.”
There was no malice in his voice. She sat down on the couch, her body slowly relaxing. “Dylan never mentioned someone called Mat.”
He laughed. “You know all his secrets?”
“No, but considering I’m his best friend, I believe, he’d mentioned a friend staying with him.”
“Let me think, I can’t recall him mentioning your name, either.”
His voice had a teasing tone and Tiffany started to like him. It was exactly what she needed after opening the door to the police.

His question hauled her back to their conversation. “Are you okay?”
“Of course I am. Please let him know I called,” she snapped, still out of sorts, and hung up, never giving him a chance to reply.
Breathing in and out, she tried to calm herself down and ridding herself of the adrenaline that had shot through her, leaving her shaking all over. She took another deep breath before she walked to the kitchen to rinse her clammy hands and make a cup of tea. The sound of the phone made her jump, and she rushed back to grab it, nearly knocking over the vase with flowers, cursing the police all the way as well as Josh, the bastard who’d left her in hospital bruised and beaten up last year.
“Dylan?”
“It’s Mat. How about you tell me your name so I can ask Dylan to return your call?”
“How did you get my number?”

Tiffany wasn’t sure how long she sat there before she was finally able to get up and reach the phone in the kitchen. Dialling a familiar number, it didn’t take long for someone to answer.
“Hello?”
Tiffany hesitated for a second then quickly hung up. Checking the numbers by pushing the redial button, she pressed connect when she was sure. With her heartbeat up a notch, she focussed this time.
“Hello?” the person answered, this time with more irritation in his voice.
Confused, she asked, “Can I talk to Dylan, please?”
“He’s not home.”
“Who… who are you?”
“My name is Mat. Can I leave him a message?”
Puzzled for a split second, she racked her brain to put one and one together. This guy definitely had a little Kiwi accent in his voice. But who the hell was he?

“We need to talk to you. I can assure you you’re not in trouble, but we need your help.” Then he squeezed the card into the small gap of the doorframe. “This is my number. Please call in when you have somebody with you, and we can have a talk.”
She nodded, appreciating him leaving the card in the door and not asking her to open up.
“Will you be okay, Miss Brooks?” Jones asked again.
The simple answer was no, but again, she nodded, hoping for this nightmare to end soon.
Senior Constable Jones and Sergeant Harris left, and Tiffany watched them drive off in their car. Only then did she close the door, leaned against it, and slid down, not able to hold back the flood of tears and the uncontrollable sobs that shook her body.
