His question hauled her back to their conversation. “Are you okay?”
“Of course I am. Please let him know I called,” she snapped, still out of sorts, and hung up, never giving him a chance to reply.
Breathing in and out, she tried to calm herself down and ridding herself of the adrenaline that had shot through her, leaving her shaking all over. She took another deep breath before she walked to the kitchen to rinse her clammy hands and make a cup of tea. The sound of the phone made her jump, and she rushed back to grab it, nearly knocking over the vase with flowers, cursing the police all the way as well as Josh, the bastard who’d left her in hospital bruised and beaten up last year.
“Dylan?”
“It’s Mat. How about you tell me your name so I can ask Dylan to return your call?”
“How did you get my number?”

Tiffany wasn’t sure how long she sat there before she was finally able to get up and reach the phone in the kitchen. Dialling a familiar number, it didn’t take long for someone to answer.
“Hello?”
Tiffany hesitated for a second then quickly hung up. Checking the numbers by pushing the redial button, she pressed connect when she was sure. With her heartbeat up a notch, she focussed this time.
“Hello?” the person answered, this time with more irritation in his voice.
Confused, she asked, “Can I talk to Dylan, please?”
“He’s not home.”
“Who… who are you?”
“My name is Mat. Can I leave him a message?”
Puzzled for a split second, she racked her brain to put one and one together. This guy definitely had a little Kiwi accent in his voice. But who the hell was he?

“We need to talk to you. I can assure you you’re not in trouble, but we need your help.” Then he squeezed the card into the small gap of the doorframe. “This is my number. Please call in when you have somebody with you, and we can have a talk.”
She nodded, appreciating him leaving the card in the door and not asking her to open up.
“Will you be okay, Miss Brooks?” Jones asked again.
The simple answer was no, but again, she nodded, hoping for this nightmare to end soon.
Senior Constable Jones and Sergeant Harris left, and Tiffany watched them drive off in their car. Only then did she close the door, leaned against it, and slid down, not able to hold back the flood of tears and the uncontrollable sobs that shook her body.

“Anybody you can call?”
His voice was soothing, and when Tiffany met his eyes through the screen door, she noticed something in his eyes which conveyed trust. There was a need inside her to trust him. So much, but every fibre in her told her to not open the door. Never again would she let the police take her to the station and treat her like a criminal.
She bit her lip again, desperately trying to figure out whom to call, when she said, “My brother.”
Harris nodded. “Thomas Terrill was charged with possession of drugs last year. You are noted as a witness.” He paused, checked his little notepad, and continued. “He’s also known as Josh Ford.”
Leaning her head against the door, Tiffany took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Are you okay, Miss Brooks?” Harris asked.
“Please open the door,” Jones requested.
Holding up her hand, she replied, “I haven’t seen him since then. I have nothing to do with whatever trouble he’s in.” Tears started to trickle down her cheeks, and she took another two deep breaths before standing straight to meet Harris’ gaze. He searched her eyes before he assented with a nod and held up a business card.

“Who?” Tiffany asked hardly above a whisper. Her whole body shook, and she knew she had to sit down soon or she’d faint.
“Thomas Terrill.” Jones repeated. “He was up on charges last year for the possession of drugs. The file states that you were involved—”
“There’s no way, I come with you.” She nearly screamed, panic rising within her. “You can’t make me—”
“Miss Brooks. We’re not here to take you with us, but to ask you a few questions,” Sergeant Harris explained. “Is there anybody with you at home?”
Tiffany’s forehead creased into a frown as she shook her head. Anxiety spread through the pit of her stomach, and she had to resist the urge to step back to shut the door.

Righteo … let’s start with something new.

This story is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

When Tiffany Brooks opened the door and lay eyes on the police officers, memories of the horrid day came back to her when she’d been dragged to the police station the previous year. Everything inside her tensed as she checked the lever for the screen door to make sure it was locked. Her palms moist, she rubbed them against her pants.
“Miss Brooks?” the male police officer asked.
Scared she wasn’t able to find her voice, she bit her lip and simply nodded.
“Miss Tiffany Brooks?” the female officer asked.
She nodded again.
Tiffany wasn’t able to read the expression on either of the police officers’ faces. It worried her.
“I’m Senior Constable Jones. This is Sergeant Harris.” She paused for a moment. “We would like to ask you a couple of questions in regard to Thomas Terrill.”

Snippet Sunday – NEW BEGINNINGS – 14/08/2016 #romance #love #dreamit

Thank you to all of you who have shared the news about the release of NEW BEGINNINGS last week. The book had a better start than I had hoped for.

So here’s my last snippet before I will introduce another story next week. Again thanks … and enjoy 🙂

His remark irked her to the very core. Holding Mia even closer to her side, she lifted her finger and pointed at him. “No offence, Mr. O’Connor, but it has been quite a week for us as well, and I was prepared to answer all your questions. I have one simple question, and you don’t know the answer. Wouldn’t there be something in the file?”
Sophie considered herself a kind person. Kindness could’ve been her middle name, but she met his surprised frown dead-on.
He seemed taken aback by her words. “No offence taken.” And then let out a deep breath. “You’re right. I apologise. As I said, I’ll find out details and let you know.”
“Thank you, Mr. O’Connor,” she replied and then blew out a breath.
Tugging on Sophie’s shirt, Mia asked, “What about our stuff?”
Sophie shifted and looked down at her sister, but before she had a chance to say anything, Mr. O’Connor beat her to it.
“What stuff?” he asked as he opened the door.
“Considering what we inherited here, we brought all our things,” Sophie explained without looking at him.

Snippet Sunday – NEW BEGINNINGS – 07/08/2016 #romance #reading #bookpromo

I’m continuing with one of my earlier books. I received my rights back after three wonderful years with a publisher, and it’s now time to fly solo.

The release day is on the 11 August  ~ MARK IT IN YOUR CALENDAR ~  and it now has a cover as well. I love it.

The story is set in Hobart, Tasmania, where Sophie and Mia have inherited a house – from a stranger.

Sophie took her sister’s hand as she thought about his last comment. She wasn’t aware of any distant relatives. Dead or alive. Her mother would have at least mentioned her once. Letting out a soft sigh, she made a mental note to table the question for a later moment with the resolve to find out the answers. And soon.
“Okay, let’s go then.”
He pinched his nose with his thumb and index finger and took a deep breath. “Look, Miss Lever—”
“Levesque,” Sophie helped him again, this time somewhat more firmly.
Running his thumb over his eyebrow, he stepped closer, but not so close as to be intimidating. “I’m sorry. It’s been one extraordinary week,” he said with his voice just above a whisper. “Once I get back I’ll check with the partners here to see whether anybody knows more about it.”
Did he say he’d had one extraordinary week? Annoyance crept in.

He stood with one swift movement and went to a little cupboard near the window to retrieve a bunch of keys. “Would you like me to take you there?”
Still feeling a rush of excitement as well as caution within her, Sophie took Mia’s hand and inclined her head when she asked, “Is it far?”
Her voice sounded tired even to her. It had been a long day already. She stood and placed her arm around Mia assuming that, considering how tired she was, her little sister was most likely exhausted.
“No, not at all. Five to ten minute drive, I’d say,” the attorney replied.
“I still don’t understand. Why us?” Sophie asked quietly, meeting his gaze and, for the first time, actually taking in his icy blue eyes. He was very attractive, with a face tanned by wind and sun, and there always seemed to be a hint of a smile on his lips.
Her gaze fixed back on his mouth. Blushing, she quickly looked away.
He turned to them, raking a hand through his short, curling blond hair. “Ma’am, what I know is that both of you are in the will. What I know is that I was supposed to fly you down here to officially read you the will. What I know is that I’m supposed to hand over the keys to you, and to let you know that your expenses are covered for the next twenty-four months. I did not know Ms. Bellinger, as one of the retired partners wrote up the will. I do not know who she was or in what way she was connected to you. I assumed she was a distant relative of yours.”
