“BUT THE HEART DOES”

DEFYING RULES

Sometimes one has to break rules in order to find happiness… Widower Logan Hendrix is puzzled by the recent series of small crimes against his son’s new teacher. It’s a mystery to him, and he offers her his help. There’s an instant attraction, and Logan wants to take their parent/teacher relationship to a more personal level. It doesn’t take Addison Ryker long to fall in love with Alinta Bay, the small town she’s moved to for her new teaching position at the local primary school. Her newfound haven is threatened, however, when her house is broken into and she is relying on the unbelievably stubborn but very sexy Logan for help. Although captivated by him, Addison worries her career could be compromised, because there are rules about dating a parent.

TELL IT TO MY HEART

Confronted with the choice to care for his friend’s family on the other side of the world or to return to Alinta Bay to be with his own newfound family, how will Noah choose?

Following the death of his grandmother, Noah Fielding returns to Alinta Bay and the first thing — or person — he finds is the next-door neighbour in his nan’s bathroom — naked no less. Still jetlagged, he doesn’t hit it off with Molly at first. Yet, over the next few weeks, as his past uncovers itself bit by bit, she becomes is anchor, his friend, and his lover.

Molly Reid had the world at her feet, happily married with a young son … until a tragic car accident took everything away from her. With her heart broken, she moves to Alinta Bay to escape the memories of the past. Her peaceful existence, however, is interrupted after a heavy storm floods her house and she temporarily moves into her recently deceased neighbour’s house next door.

When Noah’s friend and partner goes missing during a routine flight, Noah returns to Alaska to help, but will he come back for Molly?

BETWEEN GOODBYE AND HELLO

Can two seemingly incompatible people who judge each other on past events be able to find some common ground?

Harrison Hendrix believes in second chances, but when it comes to Melody, he has every reason to doubt it’s possible. He’s conflicted when he sees her back in town and tries his best to see the change in her that other friends mention. Even more so when spending a night with her after being set up for a dinner date.

Life hasn’t been kind to Melody Foster, and she returns to Alinta Bay for a new beginning. Hit by tragedy again, she’s determined to live life to the fullest and with no regrets. She creates a bucket list … on which #8 the very difficult, yet extremely sexy Harrison has been included. Why does it seem he’s always around when she’s in trouble?

Maybe it’s time to take a risk and leave the past where it belongs, but will trusting their instinct be the right choice for them?

She gasped. “You… you’re—”

“I am indeed.”

Molly studied him. He didn’t look anything like the boy in the photos Mrs. Fielding had shown her. The stranger in her bathroom — in Mrs. Fielding’s bathroom — looked … she huffed a sigh and admitted, he looked sexy in his faded jeans, the dark blue T-shirt with Alaska written on the front in some corny font, his brown hair tousled, his skin unusually pale for someone who apparently lives in California, and his eyes … she met his eyes again and her heart skipped a beat. She blinked, dazed by the endless depth of his eyes, a rich, dark emerald that held her captive and her breath was trapped in her throat. Even with the thick glasses that the grandson sported in the photos, the green was the same amazing colour.

And finally, he told her the reason of his intrusion. “I own the house.”

It took her a beat to relay the information to her brain. “Excuse me?”

“I own the house,” he repeated.

Finding her moisturiser bottle, she held on to it as tightly as possible for the sake of holding onto something. She hoped there was going to be an end to this soon. She squared her shoulders and narrowed her eyes. “Not sure what you’re on about, but this house belongs to the late Mrs. Fielding.”

His lips quirked on one side. “I know. She was my grandmother.”

She gasped. “You… you’re—”

Today’s Snippet

As she reached for her underwear, the door opened. Jerking to a straight upright stance, ignoring the hammering in her chest, she stared for a second. A scream was stuck in her throat, almost choking her, she tried to let it out but in vain. Instinctively, she grabbed the soap and threw it at the person standing in the door.

The man didn’t budge.

She looked around, grabbed for her face washer, and threw that at him as well, even as she admitted to herself about the uselessness of the piece of cloth.

He caught it and a frown crossed his face. “Will you stop it?”

Finally able to, she shouted at the top of her voice. “Out! Get out!”

But he only cocked a lazy brow at her.

Holding on to the towel with one hand, she searched for something else to throw at him. “Who are you? What are you doing here?”

He raised his other brow as well. “Me?”

Although the steady drumming of her heartbeat still pulsed in her ears, the initial scare inside her abated. Despite a startling tingle tiptoeing down her spine and worry washing over her, her feet remained rooted to the floor, because there was something about him that didn’t scream danger to her. “Can you see anybody else here?” There could be no mistaking the hard note of annoyance in her voice.

His gaze flicked down to her chest where it paused for a moment before their eyes met again. Or was he checking out her scar? Awareness came over her, and she wished she had something to cover it up with.

And finally, he told her the reason of his intrusion. “I own the house.”

Today’s Snippet

Molly stepped into her neighbour’s shower and let the warm water run over her body. It’d been a busy couple of days since her house had flooded. She’d managed to finish the website design for the Sydney company. That was well and truly before the deadline and that gave her two or three days before they might come back with any queries or requests for changes. She rumbled through her mental calendar, knowing it should be enough time to get most of the things in her house organised before she was able to move back again.

Annoyance that she hadn’t looked after the gutters more ate away at her. It was going to be a few months until the house would be in good order again. At least she had insurance and didn’t have to worry about expenses. The builder from the other day had assured her, the study and the lounge room should only have carpet damage. However, her bedroom and the spare room would be more involved. They’d been able to move most of the furniture into the garage with little or no harm. A little sigh escaped her as she thought about what lay ahead, but she was grateful for having Mrs. Fielding’s house to stay in. Molly was sure the older woman wouldn’t have minded.

She turned the water off and grabbed her towel before stepping out of the shower. It’d been another lovely, but hot day, and she was grateful Mrs. Fielding’s lawyer left the power and water on. Apparently, he’d heard back from her grandson, who was due to arrive in a few days. Sadness went through her that Mrs. Fielding’s own grandson hadn’t come to her funeral. She had always talked with so much love about him, and he didn’t even have the respect to show up. She was going to give him a good piece of her mind when he’d arrive.

As she reached for her underwear, the door opened.

A heavy silence hung between them for a long beat until his friend picked up the conversation again. “No problems, buddy. We’ll make it work.”

“Thanks. I really appreciate it.”

He hung up, checked the weather as well, and hoped he was going to be on his way home the next day. A thought popped into his mind, and he reached for his phone again. Graham answered almost straight away.

“Sorry Graham, I’m not really sure about the time difference, but I have a quick question.”

“Shoot.”

The short answer made Noah believe it must have been some ungodly hour in Australia. “Does my mother know?”

Graham blew out a breath. “No. I’m sorry, but I haven’t tracked her down, yet.”

That surprised him. After all, the lawyer had been able to track him down in Alaska. “Isn’t she in France?”

“Not anymore, it seems.”

“Shit.”

Graham choked back a snort. “Not the word I’d use, but I agree.”

Noah ignored the subtle chide. “Is that something you’ll work on?”

“Yes.”

Noah hesitated, not sure what else to say. “Okay. I’ll see you soon.” He hung up and snatched a piece of paper from his desk to jot down all the things he had to do in the next twenty-four hours.

Not much time.

Switching on the light, he stood and headed into the living area where he threw wood on the fire. He might as well stay awake. After he’d dressed, he made himself a cup of tea and then booted up his laptop. He loaded pictures of Alinta Bay and his lips quirked into a smile as he reminisced about his childhood days. Slowly images of picnics with his grandmother and afternoons at the beach on his surfboard with friends returned, bringing a smile to his lips.

He checked the time. It was half past seven, and he reached for his phone. A few seconds later, his best friend answered the call.

“Buddy, what’s up?”

“Morning, Dean. I’ll need to head back to Australia for a week or two.” Noah had an idea of his friend’s thoughts and added, “My grandma died.”

“Fu… Sorry, buddy. You know it’ll take you close to a week to get there this time of the year.”

He chuckled. Yes, he was aware of it. “It’s not that bad. I will need you to fly me to Anchorage and I’ll hitch a flight from there.”

“Shit. Let me check the weather forecast, and I’ll get back to you.”

“Thank you, mate. I owe you.”

“Hey, and I’m sorry about your grandma.”

“Thanks, Dean. It’s important for me to be at the funeral. She was the one who took care of me after Mum left.”

A heavy silence hung between them for a long beat until his friend picked up the conversation again. “No problems, buddy. We’ll make it work.”

Graham chuckled. “You’d better get used to the idea of returning with your summer clothes. We’re currently dealing with a heat wave here.”

Rubbing his face with his hand, Noah smiled. He remembered those hot days during which he’d surfed the ocean. “I’m sure I’ll find some shorts and a T-shirt.”

He disconnected after promising Graham to stay in contact and send him the details of his arrival. It was going to be hell to get out of this place this time of the year.

He closed his eyes and tried to remember Alinta Bay. The small coastal town he had grown up in. Tried to remember the house he lived in with his grandmother, but as much as he wracked his memory to come up with something, it eluded him. Except for the bright green carpet along the hall and in his room. He choked back a chuckle. Out of all things, that was stuck to his brain. Of course, he also recalled the old, beaten up car. How could he forget? It’d always been touch and go to get the engine started.

Throwing himself back into the pillow, he tried to sort all the thoughts rushing through his head and deal with the guilt that spread through him.

“You’ve inherited her house and her savings,” he heard Graham saying. “I can call you again in a few days if you’d like me to get everything organised from this end. Unless you’d like to come home.”

Home.

Alinta Bay hadn’t been his home for so many years and the simple word sounded so wrong. Alaska was his home and had been for over six years now. And he was happy.

Yet, why did the simple four-letter word have such an impact on him?

“I’ll come home.” He paused, hardly able to believe his own words. Was this simply an emotional reaction or something he intended to do indeed? “Give me a couple of days. It’s shit weather over here, with a snow front on its way.”

Today, I’d like to dedicate the snippet to a former “snippeter” and fabulous author who sadly passed away too early. Ed Hoornaert’s blog posts were not only his weekly snippets, but full of mischief through the eyes of his cat “Effing Feline”. He was a great writer who was fun, but most of all, very supportive. I will miss him.

Noah Fielding woke to the sound of his phone buzzing relentlessly on the bedside table. Reluctantly removing one arm from under the covers, he reached for his watch, squinting to read the time. Three o’clock in the morning. Who in the hell would call at this crappy time of the day? Or night as it were.

A rumble of thunder almost drowned out the buzzing, but it didn’t go away. With a big sigh, he grabbed the phone and answered. “Hello?”

“Is this Noah Fielding?”

“Who wants to know?”

“My name is Graham Hendrix, and I represent the estate of the late Mrs. Eliza Fielding from Alinta Bay. My apologies, I tried to get the time difference right, but it seems I didn’t.”

He swung his legs to the side of the bed and sat up. “Late?”

“My apologies, Mr. Fielding, your grandmother passed away two days ago. She had pneumonia from which she didn’t recover.”

He held onto the phone like his life depended on it and for several long seconds stared into the darkness. A pain settled in his chest and instinctively he rubbed it with the palm of his hand. “Shit.”

He almost missed Graham’s words, which were spoken in a hushed voice. “My condolences.”
