I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. I moved a little forward, back into Jesse’s POV – having a beer with his friends, Noah and Harrison.

Enjoy ♥

Jesse stared at the beer in his hand and barely listened to his friend’s story. His mind was still reeling from the events during the day. Meeting the mother and daughter, but also finding another dead roo on the road, with a small joey inside her still alive. He would never get used to the sight, even after five years in the job. Road accidents happened, he knew that, but he wished people would care and move the roo or call it in straight away.
“Earth to Jesse.”
His friend’s voice hauled him back to the present. “Sorry, mate.”
“What’s up, Jesse?” his friend, Harrison, asked. “Noah’s joke was actually quite funny for a change and you didn’t even move. Trouble at work?”
Jesse looked from one friend to the other. Halfbrothers, who’d been separated for most of their lives. He enjoyed the occasional night out, but tonight didn’t feel right.
“Sorry, Noah. My mind’s somewhere else.”
“Somewhere or with someone?” Harrison asked.
Jesse cocked a brow.
“Mate, this is Beauty Bay. People talk. Everyone knows about the girl who helped you with the joey today. Word is, you were exceptionally nice to her.”
“Geez, Harrison, will you shut up. You make me sound like a paedophile. Her name is Zoe. She’s only moved her recently with her mother after her parents’ divorce.”
“Zoe Kendricks?”
Jesse’s raised his eyebrows. “You know her?”
“Her mother works with us. Yeah, I know her. Cute little thing. Taking her parents’ separation hard.”
With a nod, Jesse replied, “That’s the feeling I got. Caring for the joey did her good it seemed. So I told her as much as possible about it.”
“How did you meet her in the first place? Don’t get me wrong, I like Lexie. She’s a great addition to the team, but—”
“Oh, I know who you’re talking about,” Noah interrupted him. “Dad says, great knowledge, but lacking people’s skills.”
Jesse choked back a snort. Yes, that was the impression he got as well.

♠♠  OUT NOW  ♠♠
I’m back ! Just travelled two weeks in NZ and had the most wonderful time … anyway … I’d like to share some more excerpts from my earlier book “Innocent Tears” – I hope you’ll enjoy the read. Thanks for stopping by.

Today’s Hook:

Emma stared at the phone in utter astonishment and then dialled the room number again.
“It’s Emma here, again,” she said with as much confidence as she could muster.
Mrs. Gibbs sighed. “Now what?”
“Mrs. Gibbs, my original call was primarily to inform you that Mr. McCormack is here,
and waiting for you in the hotel café.”
“Thank you, dear. I expect you upstairs at one o’clock.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Emma hung up, rubbed her hands over her face, and then sighed in frustration. “Jack,” she said through the little gap of her hands.
Jack looked over and his mouth tugged into a smile. He came closer, leaned against the reception desk, and crossed one foot over the other.
“What’s up, sunshine?”
Emma widened the gap between her hands just a bit further to look at Jack. She shook her head and wearily said, “You don’t wanna know.”
He hooked his finger into her skirt and pulled her closer. “You mucked up?”
“Big time.”
Jack slowly took her hands away from her face. “How big?”
Letting out a small grunt of frustration at her own wrong doing, she said, “Big!”
He smiled, and if Emma hadn’t needed his help, she would have been annoyed with him. Her eyes met his and she sighed. Jack was an attractive man, even in this everboring- looking hotel uniform, which nicely hugged his toned chest and abs. She placed her hand on his chest and another sigh escaped her lips.
Jack’s eyes slightly narrowed. “Okay, Em, spill it.”
Emma met Jack’s gaze. She knew the look of his brown eyes so well from all their staring competitions they’d had, as to who would get the next drink out of the fridge. No wonder all the other girls were keen to share a shift with Jack – or even more.
“I told Mrs. Gibbs I would look after her. I couldn’t find anyone, you know, as in to look after the girl. It’s just something about her… she’s so–” Emma exhaled. “–so… I have no idea. Intimidating, like my old teacher. So I rang her to tell her that this man was here. The good looking one. You know who I mean, don’t you?” Emma didn’t wait for his
answer. “–and she wouldn’t listen, and asked me about the babysitter. The next thing I know… Oh Jack, what’ve I done?”

BLURB:
Becoming a parent can be daunting at the best of times, but for Flynn, a business lawyer in Melbourne, it almost pulls the feet from right underneath him. He’s become a father to six-year-old Nadine literally overnight! He had no idea about her existence, and the news throws him into chaos, even more so when he is asked to take over custody. With the help of Emma, an employee at the hotel where Nadine and her grandparents are staying, and his parents, Flynn tries to do the right thing. Yet, the right thing in his eyes differs from his parents’, and Emma is voicing her opinion as well. And right in the middle is little Nadine, still grieving the loss of her mother and finding a wonderful friend in Emma. There’s no doubt she’s afraid where and with whom she will settle. But in the end, it’s a letter Flynn receives that helps him figuring out what to do.

Ethan walked over to Emily, placed his arm around her shoulder, and placed a kiss on her forehead. She moved around to look at him, and he choked back a sigh at the sight of her. Her grief obvious in her eyes with her face red, blotchy, and slightly swollen, which he assumed was from all the crying. Connor hadn’t exaggerated when he’d said she took it the hardest.
“How are you, pumpkin?” he asked just above a whisper.
She shook her head.
“Is he really dead?” Nick asked against her chest in-between sobs.
Emily hugged him even tighter as more tears flowed down her cheeks. “Yes, honey. I’m afraid he is.”
Connor joined them. “How about we head inside,” he asked quietly.
Without any warning, Nick moved out of Emily’s embrace and looked at Connor. “I’m sorry about your dad,” he said, still sobbing. It tore Ethan apart, the ache to see his son in so much pain, but still remembering his manners.
Connor knelt in front of him, his struggle with emotions evident. “Thanks buddy. Jack made me promise to tell you how much he loved you. He wants you not to be sad for too long, because he thinks life is too short to be sad. And even though you can’t see him, he’ll always be around.”

Choking back a chuckle, he nodded. “Would you be offended if I gave you some money?”
“Why?”
A look of confusion spread over his face. “Why what?”
“Why are you offering me money?”
As he rubbed his fingers over his forehead, he stepped closer. “Okay. Something’s just gone wrong here in this conversation.” He cleared his throat. “I was merely offering you a bit of cash, as you just said you were short on money.”
An awful guilt rushed over her. Even though she considered herself a kind person, it seemed she’d forgotten how it felt to be the recipient of kindness. When had that happened?
It was only a hesitant shake of her head, but it said more than words. “I know you mean well, but I can’t accept. Thanks for the offer, though.”
Leaning against the bench, he crossed one foot over the other, and his face showed a questioning frown. Sophie took in every little bit of him as he appeared tall and big in the kitchen. He was deliciously sexy and had an inherent captivating presence. The tousled blond hair seemed in need of a haircut, curling up around his ear. She stared at him, taking in his icy-blue eyes.
He broke the silence. “It wouldn’t make you a less strong person.”

BLURB:

“I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.”

“Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!”

Pain shot through Ethan when he gave a slow nod. “Yes, it will be,” he replied. “But remember, we talked about it. Jack’s at a good place, and Connor is now in the house. He’s not a bad bloke, either. Right? Emily is staying with him at the moment, too.”

When Nick didn’t reply, Ethan checked the mirror again to find his son staring out the window, most likely contemplating his father’s reply.

Half an hour later, they stopped in front of Jack’s house. Ethan hadn’t even switched off the engine completely when he saw Emily rushing from the house towards them. He heard Nick unbuckling and opening the car door just as quickly and within only a few seconds, his son was in Emily’s embrace. Taking a deep breath, he gave his legs a little shake after the long drive, and got out. Connor and Niall were outside as well now, so he stepped towards them. Niall looked as bad as Ethan felt, his freckles darker than usual on his pale skin. He gave him a hug and tapped him gently on the back. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Connor was struggling with emotions, too. He stepped back and slapped him on his back as well. All four of them had been friends since childhood, each coping with different life challenges along the way, yet they’d never lost their friendship.

“How are you holding up?” he asked Connor.

With a lift of his shoulder, he let Ethan know that he wasn’t sure, yet. It must’ve been hard for Connor losing his father after only meeting him again a few weeks earlier.

His laughter echoed in the spacious kitchen. “I think there’s a little coffee shop down the street. I still have half an hour before my next meeting.”

Sophie sat down and gently tugged Mia onto her lap. She kissed her sister’s forehead, took a deep breath, and met Mark’s eyes. “There’s no spare cash in the budget for little luxuries like that,” she replied with as much confidence as her voice let her. There was no need to go into details that she’d had to spend most of the money for the rent she’d owed. Mrs. Karovic, her landlady in Sydney, had made sure to squeeze every last little penny out of her, and the next payment from Social Services wasn’t due until the end of the week.

“This one is on me,” he said. “The will’s only covering the bills. Will you be eligible for social assistance?”

She gave a slow nod, remembering the day she’d rung Social Service to inform them of their possible move. It had taken a whole hour to get through to someone. Thankfully, the person had been more than helpful and told her that all she had to do was to visit the office in Hobart, and her benefits would continue as always. In a naïve way, she hadn’t worried so much about receiving the money. For her, the most important aspect was for Mia to have her own bed tonight. A bed and not just a mattress on the floor. And so would she. As well as their own kitchen and their own bathroom, which they didn’t have to share.

“Sophie?”

She hauled herself back from her thoughts. “I’m sorry. I was daydreaming.”

Choking back a chuckle, he nodded. “Would you be offended if I gave you some money?”

There he was standing in the middle of her kitchen, talking on his mobile. He held his finger up and mouthed something along the lines of “Sorry, just one moment.”
When he hung up, their gazes met.
Sophie stood still for a moment. A moment that could have been five seconds or even five minutes. She wasn’t sure. With a little mental headshake, she forced herself to focus. “There’s still furniture in the house.” Her voice almost broke. “And you’re still here.”
He cocked a brow. “Is that your way of asking me to leave? Furniture and I are here until not needed anymore. And by the way, honestly, I prefer Mark.”
A small smile came to his lips and made her blush. She just couldn’t figure him out. Good grief, she couldn’t figure herself out. He’d annoyed her for not having been prepared earlier that morning. Yet, at the same time, he was so furiously attractive that her mind went all mushy in his presence.
“Mark. Sorry. It’s just… I mean… the rooms are… I mean, the beds and the sofa. There’s still the telly. Are you sure?” Letting out a big sigh, her shoulders sagged. “This fabulous lady wouldn’t have left us some teabags as well, by any chance? I think I could do with one right now.”

Ethan loved the view and never got enough of it. He loved the contrast of the blue ocean meeting the luscious green of the forest. The long winding road through gigantic trees was leading right into Fermosa. Because Nick usually struggled with travel sickness coming down this route, it was probably a blessing that Nick was asleep.
Startled by the ringing of the phone, Ethan checked the ID, and pressed the Bluetooth button.
“Ethan speaking.”
“It’s Connor.”
Ethan’s heart sank, not ready, yet, for the conversation he was about to have. Another quick glance to the back told him that Nick was still asleep. It had been hard telling his son the news regarding Jack.
“How are you holding up?” he asked his friend.
There was a moment of silence before Connor finally said, “Emily’s struggling.”
Ethan exhaled a long, deep breath as he turned the corner for another near perfect view over Fermosa.

“Thank you, Clara Bellinger. Thank you, whoever you are,” Sophie said aloud.

All such a far cry from what they were used to in Sydney. All they’d been able to afford had been a single room with the bathroom across the hall — which they’d had to share with other tenants. Another thought popped into her mind, and it was like she suddenly comprehended what she was seeing.

“Mr. O’Connor. There’s still some furniture.”

Silence.

Sophie looked around the doorframe and down the hall. “Mr. O’Connor?”

“I’m in the kitchen.”

Mia appeared from one of the rooms. Sophie took her hand and walked towards the front of the house and into the kitchen. It was equally as beautiful as the rest of the house. It had the same old feeling to it. The cupboards had a pine timber look. The table and chairs near the bay window seemed to be made of the same material. There was a dishwasher and a washing machine. The cooking area had a very old-fashioned stove with pots and pans hanging on hooks from the ceiling. She looked over to the window, which had a wonderful view outside to the front yard. After a long moment of taking in every little bit of the kitchen, she turned and spotted Mark.

Still in thought, she nearly bumped into Mark as he suddenly stopped and let go of her hand. Watching him with curious eyes, she realised he was searching for the keys. Once he had found them, he handed them over to her.

One corner of his mouth was pulled into a slight smile. “Go ahead. It’s yours now.”

Taking a deep breath, she took the keys and opened the front door. Feeling like Alice in Wonderland, she took a small step over the threshold. The smell of a closed-up building engulfed her straight away, but there was no disgust, only pride and joy welling up in her. The jaded odour of mothballs still lingered in the air, mixed with a mouldy smell, as well as a slight scent of plants. Sophie turned to Mia, who was still holding on to Mark.

“Come on, sweetie. Let’s go exploring and open these windows,” she said as she held her arms open for her sister to reach out.

They both moved from room to room, opening curtains and windows, taking in each room and its interior. The lounge room was to the right of the entrance with the kitchen opposite. They went past them and further back into the house. First room, then another room, a bathroom, and finally what seemed to be the master bedroom with an ensuite. Two showers! Sophie’s tight expression relaxed into a smile. All rooms sparsely yet fully furnished. Beautiful, old-fashioned furniture.

Sophie turned in a full circle to take a second look at everything again. The temptation to let out a scream of delight was almost overwhelming. It was like being in a dream. She swallowed the big lump in her throat, choked back a sob as she touched a lovely mahogany cabinet. The polished wood was cool and smooth beneath her fingertips. Solid. No, it wasn’t a dream. They found a single bed in the back room and a double bed in the master. The third room had a roller desk in it.

That was going to be her study room!

“Thank you, Clara Bellinger. Thank you, whoever you are,” Sophie said aloud.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

5star Review:

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a
feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!
