Advice is what we ask for when we already

Emma kneeled next to her and held both Nadine’s hands. The right words escaped her, and she had no idea what to say. Her heart ached looking into the girl’s eyes. Admiration towards her grew more and more. “Honey, I honestly don’t know, but I can’t see a reason why he wouldn’t. You’re a gorgeous young girl.” She tucked a strand of hair behind Nadine’s ear. “He’s probably just as afraid as you are at the moment. Afraid of having a little girl all of a sudden.”
Nadine threw her arms around Emma’s neck and sobbed. “What if he doesn’t like me? Then I have nobody to look after me.”
A knot formed in Emma’s stomach. “Naddie, honey. Of course he’ll like you, and you will still have your grandparents.” Emma gave her a long hug before taking her hand. “Let’s get to meet your dad. I’ll be with you all the way.”
The girl wiped the tears with the back of her hand. “Promise?”
“Pinky swear.” They both hooked up their little fingers and pulled. And a hesitant smile returned to Nadine’s face.
Once they returned to the hotel, Emma spotted Flynn in the lobby straight away. How could she miss him? He sat in the corner near the window, sunlight reflecting on his hair. Dressed again in a neat business suit, his sunglasses on top of his head, he seemed to stare into the distance. The way his hands fiddled with a plastic
bag, she assumed he was just as nervous.

“I suppose it doesn’t hurt to dream sometimes,” she said quietly.
Ely turned to meet her gaze. There was something about the look in her eyes.
Something was missing. Despite her lovely smile, her eyes expresse3D-Little Beginningsd sadness.
“Give me a couple of hours, possibly have to come back tomorrow. I’ve never
used a magic wand before. I will need some practise first.”
The smile on her face told him she appreciated his answer. She bit her lip before she replied, “Thanks.”
They went through a few ideas of what she had in mind, and he explained what was possible before she left to open the gallery.
He shook his head. Magic wand? What had he been thinking?

Blurb:
A blind date that doesn’t happen might lead to love.
After her divorce, Jeri Belmont moved to Hobart and now runs a successful art gallery. When her niece sets her up with a neighbour, Jeri expects a blind date like all the others. But she never expected her date wouldn’t even sow up because of
her age. Despite feeling unjustly judged, when she unexpectedly runs into him
again, she finds it hard to ignore Ely’s charm.
Ely Lennox knows he shouldn’t have skipped the blind date because of the lady’s
age. After all, it had only been a date, not a lifetime commitment. When his carpentry business takes him right to the woman he bailed out on, his guilt
turns into regret when he finds out she’s everything a man could hope for. How
can he convince Jeri he made a big mistake?
Will she forgive him? Or is she hiding behind something else?

Little Beginnings by Iris Blobel is a wonderful love story about a 38 year old woman who learns to trust a man again, and who comes to realise that there is no obstacle two people in love can’t overcome. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters who were a memorable addition to the story, and I loved the humourous dialogue, the story’s emotional depth, and the engaging plot. This is a character driven story which I loved from beginning to end and I’m sure you will too!

The sun was on its best behaviour and slipped from behind a cloud, giving warmth to the autumn day. Emma and Nadine had walked over to a nearby park, which had a small playground. The apprehension on Nadine’s face was forgotten right away as she enthusiastically climbed the slide and mingled with a few other children.
They stayed for a while, and when Emma stood and came closer, her little friend asked, “Can we stay a bit longer here?”
Instantly, guilt pressed down on Emma’s shoulders. Taking Nadine to the  playground seemed a reasonable idea at the time, but now as she looked into those despondent green eyes as it was time to return to the hotel, she wasn’t all that sure anymore. “I’m sorry, honey, but it’s time to go.”
Nadine’s face reflected the obvious disappointment. “Okay, then.”
She picked up her bag from the park bench and then looked at Emma. “Do you know my dad?”
“No, honey, I don’t. I saw him yesterday when he came to see your grandma and grandpa. But that’s it.” And boy, oh, boy was he a treat for the eyes!
With her voice sounding wary, Nadine asked, “Do you think he’ll like me?”

Ely nodded, but didn’t say anything. His mood was still on a low and even though
he knew better than to forget his manners, he simply couldn’t bring himself to smile.
“It would make things a bit more comfortable for the next couple of hours if you’d
at least tell me your name, Mr. Stranger.”3D-Little Beginnings
Well, if that didn’t crack a smile on his face. He often forgot that his business name was LenHob Carpentry. Not many customers really knew his name.
“Ely. Sorry, crappy day.”
Jeri choked back a chortle as she turned to walk down the narrow hall. “Join the club.”
He followed her into a small room in the back of what seemed an add-on part of the building.
“This is the room in need of more space.”
Looking around, knocking on the wall here and there, stepping over piles of
paperwork and files, he said, “I can see that.”
“Can you do some magic here?” she asked hesitantly.
He laughed softly. “Magic is for dreamers. I’m a carpenter.”

“But she’s like her mother when it comes to friends. Her father is coming this afternoon and wants to meet her . We thought it’d be better not to be part of that meeting for reasons which are none of your business.”
Thanks, Emma thought! Boy, oh boy, talk about manners.
“Anyway, Nadine likes you very much. She wouldn’t stop talking about you last night, so her grandfather suggested it might be easier for her if you were with her.”
“Ma’am, it seems that I haven’t really got a choice here considering that you have already asked Mr . Morgan, but may I ask whether I could pick her up an hour earlier and ease her mind a bit?”
Emma could only imagine that Mrs. Gibbs wasn’t impressed by this request, but in the end she heard a quiet and seemingly uncomfortable
“So it will be.”

Take that, Mrs. Grandmother. One for Emma, none for you. Ha!

The sound of someone honking the car horn hauled him back and Ely started the
engine, heading down the streets to the address he’d been given. Ely’s job for the next few hours was to add shelves in the office of a gallery in the city. It should be an easy job.3D-Little Beginnings
The front door of the gallery was still closed, so he walked to the rear of the building. After the second knock, a woman opened the door, but she didn’t look pleased.
“Good morning. I’m here to get shelves done in the office,” he said, with more irritation in his voice than was necessary.
She let out a big sigh and said, “Oh good, you’re here. I’ve been expecting you.”
She stepped back to let him in. “Come on in.”
Ely took her in. She seemed tired. Her blonde hair was loosely tied up in a
ponytail, which emphasised her high cheekbones. She wore a tight tank top and faded jeans, simple, but it still looked extremely sexy. When he met her dark blue eyes, he knew she’d checked him out as well.
“I’m Jeri, by the way.”

Emma rubbed her temple as her eyes darted around the foyer of the hotel, not liking the phone call she was having. “Mrs. Gibbs, I honestly do understand the predicament you’re in, but I’m not sure whether I’m the right person–”
“Darling, I have already talked to Mr. Morgan and he’s more than happy to grant you the extra one-and-a-half hour lunch break. I’ll pay you separately as well.”
“Ma’am, it’s not the money–”
Mrs. Gibbs let out a heavy sigh. “Emma, this is an unusual situation and I understand that, but so it is for everybody involved. Not sure what she sees in you–”
Emma was slightly offended by this and was about to hang up the phone, but
somehow had a gut feeling it would come back to haunt her. Mrs. Gibbs was one of those people who took, and that was how they survived. So she didn’t hang up, but listened.
Patiently.

Everything inside Ely churned. He wasn’t sure what to say, or whether to mention
to Georgia that he assumed he was the date. After all, he was the neighbour, friendly
neighbour indeed, but not part of the friends Georgia considered immature. And he
was in his mid-thirties as well.
He simply nodded and said, “Your cousin will be all right. And I’m sure Libby
knows what she’s doing, too.”3D-Little Beginnings
Georgia smiled, her shoulders sagging slightly. “I suppose you’re right.” Then she
looked up at him. “I’m so sorry to bother you with all this. I’m sure you’re busy.”
No, he wasn’t, but wanted to get away as soon as possible, uncomfortable with the
information he’d received only minutes earlier, even if coincidentally. Then, the tables
had turned and annoyance had crept up inside of him.
Forty?
How could Olivia set him up with a forty-year-old woman?

Flynn shook his head in disbelief. “What about Jenny and Carl?”
Teresa looked surprised. “Your parents? No. And since they moved a few years back, I wouldn’t even know how to contact them.”
William stood up to face Flynn. “Son, she’s a beautiful little girl, and as they say, the
apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Flynn checked the time on his wristwatch. “I’ll be here tomorrow again, same time.”
He walked off again. He needed air. Needed to try and digest all the information he had just been given. Needed to sort his head before he would be able to focus on a calm conversation. And he needed air to breathe and to fill his body with… with something.
After all, he had just become a dad.
