Today’s hook

Today, she wasn’t sure. There was something about Mr. O’Connor that she was drawn to.

Sophie’s eyes met his, and she squared her jaw as she tried to keep her composure and stood straight as she corrected him. “All, as in all our belongings.”

He simply nodded. They made their way to the front door and stepped outside the building, following Mr. O’Connor with their suitcases. Two teenage boys walked past them, eager to capture the interest of some girls across the road. Aware of the attention, the girls covered their mouths with their hands and broke into giggles.

Sophie’s stomach churned. So many things she had missed out on in life. The little things most took for granted. But it was going to be better from now on, she reminded herself. Better for both of them. She didn’t want Mia to miss out on so many things like she had, and the thought gave her some joy.

The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.Twenty-two-year-old

Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?

5star Review:

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a
feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!

FLY WITH ME

This is Tiffany’s story, who receives a call from the police one morning forcing her to deal with a chapter from her past, which she is unhappy to revisit. When she calls her friend Dylan, it’s Mat from New Zealand she ends up talking to.

This is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

“Nice meeting you, Mat.”

He shook Karen’s hand and was slightly taken aback by her firm handshake. “Likewise.”

As they sat, he studied her small frame, her short wavy grey hair, and soft blue eyes. He assumed her to be in her mid- to late fifties. Her complexion was attractive with not even a small blemish on her skin, but only a few lines around her eyes.

Her assistant brought some coffee and biscuits.

“You’ve brought the cold weather to Melbourne,” Karen said as she poured herself some coffee. Pointing to his take-a-way coffee cup, she asked, “Would you like a fill-up?”

“I’m right, thanks,” he replied, ignoring her swipe at the weather.

Mat emptied his cup of coffee with one long sip before he placed it on the table. “Are you still going ahead with the contract?”

He was referring to the nasty incident only a week earlier with a helicopter crash in the mountains. It’d been a big blow for the small communities of Fox and Franz Josef Glacier.

Karen nodded. “Terrible. Just terrible.” She paused a moment and leaned back into her chair. “Yes, we’d like to go ahead with the contract. We assume by the time you will have set up the business in Queenstown, it will be out of the news.”

Mat’s stomach squeezed. How he hated this side of business. If this hadn’t meant a big opportunity for him and Adam, he’d have cancelled the whole meeting. Bugger the money. But he wanted to move back to Queenstown and the contract would give him the finances to set up an office in his hometown.

He gave a slow nod. “Okay. Let’s talk figures.”

Today’s hook

Did he say he’d had one extraordinary week? Annoyance crept in. His remark irked her to the very core. Holding Mia even closer to her side, she lifted her finger and pointed at him. “No offence, Mr. O’Connor, but it has been quite a week for us as well, and I was prepared to answer all your questions. I have one simple question, and you don’t know the answer. Wouldn’t there be something in the file?”

Sophie considered herself a kind person. Kindness could’ve been her middle name, but she met his surprised frown dead-on.

He seemed taken aback by her words. “No offence taken.” And then he let out a deep breath. “You’re right. I apologise. As I said, I’ll find out details and let you know.”

“Thank you, Mr. O’Connor,” she replied and then blew out a breath.

Tugging on Sophie’s shirt, Mia asked, “What about our stuff?”

Sophie shifted and looked down at her sister, but before she had a chance to say anything, Mr. O’Connor beat her to it.

“What stuff?” he asked as he opened the door.

“Considering what we inherited here, we brought all our things,” Sophie explained without looking at him.

Mr. O’Connor stopped in his tracks. “All, as in all your clothes?”

The underlying opinion in his words didn’t go past her. They were actually hurtful. Yet, it’d been like it most of her life. People judged her on what they saw. In Sophie’s case, it was a little girl about fifteen years her junior by her side. They were dressed well, but nearly everything was second hand. Sometimes people’s preconception hurt, but often she was able to take it in her stride.

Today’s hook

He stood with one swift movement and went to a little cupboard near the window to retrieve a bunch of keys. “Would you like me to take you there?”

Still feeling a rush of excitement as well as caution within her, Sophie took Mia’s hand and inclined her head when she asked, “Is it far?”

Her voice sounded tired even to her. It had been a long day already. She stood and placed her arm around Mia assuming that, considering how tired she was, her little sister was most likely exhausted.

“No, not at all. Five to ten minute drive, I’d say,” the attorney replied.

“I still don’t understand. Why us?” Sophie asked quietly, meeting his gaze and, for the first time, actually taking in his icy blue eyes. He was very attractive, with a face tanned by wind and sun, and there always seemed to be a hint of a smile on his lips.

Her gaze fixed back on his mouth. Blushing, she quickly looked away.

He turned to them, raking a hand through his short, curling blond hair. “Ma’am, what I know is that both of you are in the will. What I know is that I was supposed to fly you down here to officially read you the will. What I know is that I’m supposed to hand over the keys to you, and to let you know that your expenses are covered for the next twenty-four months. I did not know Ms. Bellinger, as one of the retired partners wrote up the will. I do not know who she was or in what way she was connected to you. I assumed she was a distant relative of yours.”

Sophie took her sister’s hand as she thought about his last comment. She wasn’t aware of any distant relatives. Dead or alive. Her mother would have at least mentioned her once. Letting out a soft sigh, she made a mental note to table the question for a later moment with the resolve to find out the answers. And soon.

“Okay, let’s go then.”

He pinched his nose with his thumb and index finger and took a deep breath. “Look, Miss Lever—”

“Levesque,” Sophie helped him again, this time somewhat more firmly.

Running his thumb over his eyebrow, he stepped closer, but not so close as to be intimidating. “I’m sorry. It’s been one extraordinary week,” he said with his voice just above a whisper. “Once I get back I’ll check with the partners here to see whether anybody knows more about it.”

Mat took a sip of the coffee and was impressed by the flavour considering it cost him only a few bucks.
“Mate, you’re pissing me off here. Will you focus on this conversation?”
“When did you get so touchy?”
There was a sharp intake of breath and an exhale on the other end of the line. “Tiff had a rough twelve months and a shitty morning. I’m simply running a blank putting two and two together trying to fit you into all this.”
Mat froze mid-stride. Damn! He’d assumed something was wrong, but now he was curious about the history of it all. “What happened?”
“What the hell did you talk to her about, Matiu?” His friend’s voice was now loud and his tone impatient.
He leaned against the car with one hand in his pocket and watched the heavy traffic. Recalling his conversation with Tiffany earlier that day. “Well,” he began. “I answered your phone, so she hung up, but rang again. I told her you’re not home, and she asked me to leave a message and hung up. I returned the call and we had a bit of a chit chat.”
There was a pause before Dylan finally asked, “And which part made you think she was desperate to talk to me?”
“She kept calling. And my gut feeling. Instinct. Call it what you want.”
Silence.
“That makes you worry about her?”
He thought about it for a moment. “And there was a panic in her voice. Gut feeling, mate, that’s all. Just glad you were able to help her. You’ll have to tell me more about your girl tonight. I’ve got to go,” Mat finally said.
“She’s not my girl,” Dylan replied through gritted teeth. “And good luck with your meeting.”
Mat disconnected the call, placed the cup of coffee on the top of the car, and then tried to re-program the direction to his meeting place in his phone. How he missed Queenstown at that moment. With probably only a tenth of Melbourne’s population, navigation was easy, only hampered sometimes by tourists who drove on the wrong side of the road or who were simply lost.

Today’s hook

Mr. O’Connor let out a long sigh. “Ms. Bellinger was one of the partner’s clients. I was only given the details shortly after the client’s death.”
Sophie drew in her lips, as her gaze drifted past him to the window. She took a few deep breaths, inwardly calming herself. Nothing had ever been easy in her life.
“Why isn’t the partner here?”
“Retired.”
As she pondered on his reply for a moment, she began to imagine what life could be like with this inheritance.
Different. And better.
Another sigh escaped as she returned her gaze to the man behind the desk. “You can’t leave your assets to just anybody, can you?”
“Miss Lever—”
“Levesque,” she helped him.
Their eyes met.
“Are you refusing the bequest?” he asked hesitantly, and she clearly noticed how one of his eyebrows arched upward.
Staring blankly with her mouth open, panic rushed through her veins with every thump of her erratic heartbeat. An uncomfortable silence fell over them before she spoke with a rushed voice, “No. No, of course not. We’re accepting.”
She turned to look at her younger sister. “We’re actually looking forward to seeing it, aren’t we?”

When #Cancer knocked at my door ~ #breastcancer #staypositive #health

Wow … what a roller-coaster ride!

I’ve been wondering whether or not to publish this post, because it has nothing to do with me as an author, but then again, it has all to do with me as a person which defines who I am as an author.

A couple of months ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Scary thought. Especially as the mammogram came up clear, the ultrasound was not clear, and it was only the biopsy that confirmed the bad news.

Since then … I’ve been in this fast flow of rapids and haven’t had a chance to catch a breath. First I had a couple of scans which were all clear – THANK GOD. I had surgery early November to remove the lump and a lymph node. Again, I thought luck was on my side with the lymph node coming up clear as well. I prepared myself for radiation …

But luck wasn’t on my side. The actual tumour was big and aggressive resulting in my first chemo treatment yesterday. I’m doing well considering the stuff they pumped into me. Getting the needle into one of my veins was actually the worst part. To be honest, it wasn’t as easy as I’ve read it’d be. It was uncomfortable and the second dose of meds was a bit tough to take in. My wonderful friend gave me a recording of a meditation which was a lifesaver! I have been reasonably well since then, though, with the occasional wave of nausea, but nothing serious.

The worst thing for me, though, is the thought that I’ve got the medication, the poison that destroys so many of my good cells, inside me. I’m having a hard time to cope with this.

But my small family, my mum and my sisters, friends, neighbours, colleagues, the doctors, the nurses, and even strangers have been such a wonderful support, I feel I am in good hands.

So what lies ahead of me?

Christmas!

I want to have a wonderful Christmas with my husband and my girls who have been my rock, my best friends, my support, my everything over the last few weeks.

And then … well then we take 2017 as it comes. Each day at a time.

Have a wonderful Christmas season everyone … and don’t forget to count your blessings ♥♥♥

Love to you all.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Mat’s laughter echoed in the small car as he turned off the engine and got out. With a few long strides, he headed towards the café. “Does Jess know about her?”
There was a groan on the other end of the line. “You start any rumours and I will kill you.”
As he stepped inside the cafe, Mat replied, “In all seriousness, mate, Tiffany was desperate to talk to you. You’d better give her a call, aye.”
“I’ve already talked to her, but I don’t—”
“I’m glad she was able to get hold of you. It was obvious she needed to talk to you.”
Mat held his phone away for a moment, smiled at the young woman behind the counter, and ordered his coffee.
”You’re still there?” Dylan asked with a loud voice.
Mat shook his head with a smile and explained. “Mate, I’d say even in Australia it’s considered rude to talk on the phone while ordering your coffee.”
His friend’s resigned sigh gave him another chuckle.
“Mate, if you’ve already talked to her, we’re all good, aye.”
“To be frank, I’m completely lost here. How the hell do you know about Tiff? Give me the courtesy and give me a quick run down of what’s happened.”

The GPS voice in Matiu Apanui’s car had as little of a clue as he did about the directions how to get to his meeting place and after only half an hour he was still on the western side of Melbourne instead of in the city. The explanation was as simple as Tiffany was on his mind. He replayed the phone conversation repeatedly in his head. It was clear to him something must’ve upset her. Even though she’d relaxed during their short conversation, he’d been able to sense the tension in her voice.
“Shit,” he shouted as he pressed the speed dial button on his phone, remembering he’d never left a note for his friend.
“Mate, where are you?” Dylan asked by way of answering.
“I have no idea. Near a big park. Looks pretty with the tree alongside the walking tracks. Had no idea Melbourne had all these deciduous trees—”
“Mat!”
“The lovely GPS lady took me on a tourist tour first it seems. I’m considering stopping for a coffee and reboot her at the same time.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Mat noticed the frustration in his friend’s voice and asked bluntly, “Tell me about your girlfriend.”
