Ivy hadn’t known how hungry she really was until she sat at the table and read the menu. It had a long list of choices, yet she didn’t want to take advantage of his generosity. She ignored her own thoughts that her Aussie man was a bank robber on the run, and subsequently, she was spending illegal money. Yet, dizzy at the possibility of it, she remembered he’d said he was a landscaper and ignored the fact that he obviously wouldn’t admit to being a murderer or a bank robber as well. With all those thoughts running through her head, a sickly feeling spread in her stomach and her hunger disappeared. She needed some serious distraction.
“What brings you to the USA, Jared?” she asked, hoping to find out more about the very handsome stranger in front of her.
But he only shrugged and replied, “Holidays.”
Assuming that holidays were the same as what Americans called vacations, she thought she’d never had vacations in her life, let alone in another country.
“Australia is supposed to be beautiful. Why didn’t you drive around with your RV down there?”
He raised one eyebrow at her, and she wasn’t sure what that meant. Staring at him, he simply stared back.
“Are you running?” she asked carefully.
“Nope, I’m drivin’.”
Letting out an exasperated sigh. “I meant in—”
His laughter startled her. “Nah, I’m not running.” He met her gaze dead on. “But you are.”
The words were quietly spoken, but still went through her like a knife.

She sighed, and his hand shifted down her arm and held onto her hand. And this little gesture gave her some comfort. For a small moment her current situation didn’t seem scary anymore, but inside was a little flame wanting to light up some happiness. She bit her lip and tried to forget she was holding hands with a stranger she hadn’t even known three hours earlier.
Lifting their hands up a notch, he said, “Just makin’ sure you’re not going to run.”
“You’re one very stubborn man,” she replied, a smirk tugging at her lips.
He agreed. “Yeah, I know. Sophie and Mia keep tellin’ me.”
And although she hadn’t known him, wasn’t sure whether he’d be a serial killer or a fugitive, her heart ached briefly at the mention of the two female names.
“Your girlfriends?”
“What?” he said as he opened the door.
She lifted her hand. “Never mind.”
“Soph and Mia?” he asked. “Nah, mate. They’re friends. Soph is married to me best buddy, Mark, and Mia is her sister.”
And despite him being a stranger, the relief brought her some contentment.
As soon as they stepped into the rustic diner, a bell jingled above the door signalling their entrance. The scent of fried foods and coffee hit her as she scanned the red vinyl booths, the wooden chairs grouped around a number of linoleum tables, and the barstools lining the wooden counter. With the lunch rush over, the diner was quiet except for the soft music from the jukebox.

He burst into laughter, slowed down, and pulled the RV to the side, stopping right in front of the diner. With a chuckle, he said, “C’mon Ivy. My treat for a meal. Ya need to silence this tummy of yours if you wanna drive me bus.”
An overwhelming feeling rushed through Ivy. It was of such intensity, leaving her mouth dry and causing her heart rate to soar. She watched him walk around the RV right next to her door.
Not moving, she sat there watching every step as he came closer, shielding his eyes against the Arizona sun. Her palms moist from the heat inside the RV and the situationher heart was pounding as he smiled at her reaching for the door handle. With her shoulders sagged, she slowly stepped out.
“Jared—”
“Yeah, I know, mate, but you need food. Don’t need to give me details, but for heaven’s sake, ya need to put some food into you before drivin’.” He gently placed his hand under her elbow and led her towards the diner. “My treat.”
“I can’t,” she said as she tried to move her arm out of his hold.
“Yes, you can.”

Quickly he reached out for her hand. “I’m pulling your leg.” And when she didn’t reply again, he muttered, “This thing with you Americans not understanding English is turning into a problem. I was kiddin’.”
“Pulling your leg?” She shook her head. “Oh! Oh, I remember my grandpa saying that sometimes.”
A bark of laughter filled the small space. “Anyway. Talkin’ about food. There’s a small place ahead. Want some lunch?”

Ivy was hungry indeed, but last time she had checked her wallet it was near empty. There was no way she was able to afford food in a diner.
“I’m not that hungry. I’ll wait outside,” she lied without looking at him.
As the words had left her lips, her stomach betrayed her by making a loud rumbling sound.
Jared laughed. “Sure? Ya might have to confer with your body, mate.”
Heat rushed into her, and her heart beat at an unusually fast rhythm. Still turned away from him, she watched nature go by, but his curses made her look back at him. With great effort, she held back a laugh as he switched on the windshield wipers instead of the blinker.
“We might not be able to speak English in your sense, but at least we know how to drive.”
He shot her a look, and worry shot through her she might have gone too far.
“You think ya can drive better?”
“Mate,” she mocked his Australian accent. “Americans know how to drive!”

Jared held her gaze but wasn’t sure what else to say or do, especially as she simply stood in front of him, frozen to the spot.
“My name is Ivy,” she said after a long moment.
“Hedera. An evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plant in the family Araliaceae.”
With a frown, she stared at him. “I really didn’t understand that one.”
He laughed. “Sorry, mate. I got carried away. I’m a landscaper. Ivy is a climbing plant.” Scratching the back of his head, he added, slightly self-conscious, “And, of course, a beautiful name.”
Letting out a soft laugh, she stepped into the motorhome while Jared went around and slid behind the wheel before driving back onto the road. There was a long silence, and he started to feel uneasy. Usually, he was good with silence. In fact, he loved it. But at that moment, the silence made him uncomfortable.
“So, what brings ya out into the middle of the sticks?”
There was no reply, so he turned to look at her. A big frown appeared between her brown eyes, causing him to let out a small sigh.
“I thought you all speak English as well?”
“We do,” she said with a soft snort. “But I’m not so sure whether Australians do.”
With a grin he replied, “Now, don’t be cheeky, Ivy.”
“Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, my mom always said.” She laughed. “No way would I make fun of you.”
“So, you’re expectin’ a meal as well?”
There was a moment of silence again, and he glanced over. The smile was gone and panic was written all over her face.

Acknowledging that she wasn’t much into sharing details like her name, he opened the door for her. “Where are ya headin’?” he asked.
A smile started in her eyes and played with the corner of her lips. There was an appreciation in her gesture, and he returned the smile.
“Could you drop me off at the next stop?” she asked hesitantly.
“Most certainly, but where are ya headin’?”
She shrugged. “Kingman?”
“Is that on this road?”
Inclining her head, she replied, “Yes, it is. It should be less than a hundred miles along this highway.”
“Then hop in.”
She turned to get into the motorhome, and he took in her small stature and the narrow shoulders which seemed even smaller in her tight, red T-shirt. Jared noticed her cargoes were just hanging onto her hips. A nice steak wouldn’t go astray on these hips. Suddenly she stopped and moved to look at him. “Thank you,” she whispered.

Jared hung up and replayed the conversation in his head again as he snatched a beer from the small fridge. He sat at the table, unfolded the map, and looked for his new destination. Salt Lake City. Utah.
He rubbed the heel of his hand over the corner of his eye. That wasn’t anywhere near where he wanted to go. Banging his head on the table out of frustration, he realised that his first holiday in years had been hijacked within minutes by people on the other side of the world. If he’d known the cost of a phone call, he’d have called Mark and ripped strips off his backside. His best buddy had lost best-buddy status and was dropped off the Christmas list for presents.
After a quick dinner, Jared retrieved the map again and started planning which included checking his travel guide for information along the way. His next stop was supposed to be a place near the Grand Canyon and then along Route 66 for a little while. That plan had been shot to pieces. Utah was north of Arizona and not even close to his original route. Jared let out a curse and cradled his head in his hands. How had this turned out to be about them and not him?

Jared returned to the motorhome very late that afternoon. While getting his dinner organised, a vibration in his pocket alerted him to a phone call. With his brows raised in surprise, he retrieved his phone to check the incoming call. He usually had the phone switched on, but only to get a hang of the time difference and to check the time. The old wristwatch had landed in the drawer years ago becoming too inconvenient to wear while working outside. He looked at the number.
Australia.
“Hello?”
“Jared?”
Standing straight, he squinted outside the window. “Mia? What the—”
“I need to make this quick, because I have no idea what this call will cost me.”
A thousand thoughts ran through Jared’s mind. Accidents. Deaths. Chaos. His business.
There was a hiccupping sob at the end of the other end of the line, and Jared needed to sit down. Needed to have something to hold on to as well as he prepared himself for the news.
“What’s wrong, mate?”
Another sob. “Josh and I… I… we—”
He waited her out, although it was on the tip of his tongue to scream at her to just spit out the information.
“We had a fight,” she said dramatically.
The sudden silence hung heavy, and Jared’s rush of relief was so intense, he had to lean back to rest his head. Lightheaded, he closed his eyes for the moment to pass.
“Jared?”
“Still here, mate.”
“Mark said if it’s okay with you, I can join you halfway.”
Eyes wide suddenly, he stared into the distance. He had agreed to what? Yet, nobody had bothered to ask him or even mentioned it. This was supposed to be his holiday. His break from years of hard work in the business and never having a break for more than a long weekend. As much as he felt for Mia, he assumed it was merely teenage hormones going wild and nothing a good talk wouldn’t fix.
Mark, the little weasel. Instead of dealing with it, he was sending Mia over.

Although unchanging, the scenery kept him interested. Yet, Jared was pleased when he finally made it to Vegas later that afternoon, and after driving around a little to get an idea of the city, he found an RV Park, and checked in. About to exit through the office door, he turned and asked the man who had served him, “Mate, what on earth is PedXing?”
The guy chuckled. “Short for pedestrian crossing,” he replied.
Jared let out a snort. “Yeah, I don’t think I would’ve guessed that one. I’m glad they told me to look for RV and not Caravan Park.”
With a little shake of his head, he waved his hand as a thanks and left, still chuckling about the PedXings abbreviation. A country speaking the same language and more or less having the same background, yet, being so different surprised him. But why? Why did it? After all, it’d been over two hundred years that each country had evolved in a different way.
Jared returned to his motorhome, drove to his allocated spot, and got ready for the night. It’d been a full, packed twenty-four hours, leaving him exhausted and tired. He was going to explore Sin City the next day.

The woman behind the counter had looked to be in her thirties, and although carrying a stern look on her face, he did get a smile that lit up her lovely brown eyes and softened her expression. Yet, the massive amount of questions she asked him left him feeling as if he was back at school, and he didn’t want to fail and be sent back to Australia.
“Bringing in any medication?”
“No, ma’am.”
“Any food.”
“No, ma’am.” He hesitated. “Ah, ma’am. I’ve got a few leftover bikkies in my bag?”
The customs officer looked up at him with a blank face. “Bikkies?”
A fine sweat beaded his upper lip, and his palms moistened. “I suppose you’d call them cookies.” He grabbed the package out of his backpack and showed her the item in question.
She laughed, and it was a genuine and beautiful laugh. Not just a polite one, but also the kind that came from deep within. With a slight shake of her head, she replied, “Only you Australians could come up with a word like bikkies.” After a moment’s pause, she told him, “They’re all yours, honey.” And she proceeded with taking his photo and fingerprints.
With a little chuckle at himself, he grabbed his bag thinking immigration wasn’t all that bad.
Finally, after what seemed like an endless morning of shuffling through the Los Angeles airport, he exited the building only to be stuck again in yet another queue—waiting for a taxi.
