She nodded, and he picked it up.
“What on earth are you doing in this part of the world without a car?” he asked out of curiosity, but also to keep the slow conversation going. She must’ve been tired. Not only the bus ride, but also the walk to the house.
“I’m hoping to meet someone.”
“In Takepo?”
“Sort of.”
He stopped and looked over his shoulder. “Sort of?”
“He lives up here somewhere.”
“Who?”
“The person I’m hoping to meet.”
Scratching the back of his head, he kept walking until they reached her room. “May I ask who you’re hoping to meet around here?”
“I’d rather you wouldn’t.”
Dylan placed her bag onto the bed and slowly turned to meet her gaze. “I’m sorry this is awkward. I didn’t mean to be nosy but helpful, after all you’re going to be stuck without a vehicle.” He looked around. “Anyway, there are towels. The bathroom is over there. Here are the keys. TV is in the main room at the front including a computer. I believe the password is stuck on the screen. My number is…” Dylan pulled out a card. “On here. Call me any time.”
She pulled in her lips as she reached for his card. “I’ll be fine, but thanks.”
Her voice was soft, and there was still a lot of hesitation, most likely tiredness as well. It must have been a long day for her. “No offense, but I don’t believe you will be. I’m sure there’s some food around, but whoever you’re looking for, you will need some sort of vehicle.”
“He’s living around here. According to the map no further than a kilometre or two.”
Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose. “The only people living around here is me about five hundred metres down the road and Tobias Linecker.”
Her checks flushed, but she remained silent.

Hesitantly, she moved forward and took his hand. “I’m Lani Thompson.”
“Where’s your car?”
She stepped back, obviously still unsure about the situation. Who could blame her? She booked a room in a bed and breakfast, somewhere in the mountains of New Zealand, only to find a stranger. Not that she would’ve known Teddy, but at least they would’ve communicated in some way or another.
“I came with a bus.”
That he didn’t expect. “The bus stop is about five to six kilometres down the road.”
“The driver was kind enough to let me hop off at the intersection.”
Dylan chuckled. “That must’ve been Jack.”
She stared at him, obviously not following his thoughts.
He blew out a breath. “So, let me do the host thingy. Teddy said, you’ll be the only guest until Monday, so you’ll have the house to yourself until Sunday. I’ll fix you up breakfast and if you like I can offer dinner as well, but that’d be at my place, which is around another kilometre down the road.”
She looked around the kitchen. It was probably not was she expected. Even though Teddy and Mae didn’t charge much for a night, Dylan assumed that a guest would at least expect someone to be around.
“Let me show you to your room.” He turned and was about to walk down the hall when he spotted a backpack. “Yours?”

A smile tugged at Dylan Harper’s lips as he sauntered to the centre of the kitchen. “May I assume you’re Ms Jeffreys?”
He took her in. Her wild, curly hair was loosely tied in a ponytail. It was a shade of red he hadn’t seen before and working in the tourism business, he’d seen a lot of people. It was dark, yet bright red. Intriguing. The same applied to her green eyes. Even with the small distance between them, he was drawn to her eyes. Although, with every step he moved closer to her, the same eyes reflected a mix of worry and something else. She was dressed for the environment with her cargo pants, hiking boots, and a warm puffy jacket.
He held out his hand. “I’m Dylan. Teddy Larson’s neighbour.”
Her eyes widened.
With a quick shrug of his shoulder, he explained. “Teddy had to go to Christchurch on short notice and asked me to look after you.”
She arched one of her brows and damn if that reaction didn’t annoy him. Despite the fact that she had a right to. But it in all fairness it wasn’t his fault.
“Sorry for being late. Had a flat tyre out of all days.”

#SnippetSunday “It looked so peaceful.” #Sundayblogshare #Romance

Knowing she wasn’t able to go anywhere else, she placed her backpack on the floor and went in search for a glass. She was desperate for a drink. She liked the cabin style kitchen. Running her hand over the wooden bench, she looked out the window into the near darkness, still rattled by it all. There were about half a dozen cups on hooks at the wall, hanging from a shelf that had beautiful storage container for sugar, coffee, and tea. All underneath another shelf with a vast choice of herbs and spices. Lani grabbed a cup and a teabag as she imagined cleaning the dishes while enjoying the view across the mountains and the lake. It looked so peaceful. She blew out a breath and went in search for a kettle. The frying pans hung on hooks as well above the stove. The pots were next to it on shelves as well. It was such a contrast to her grandmother’s small kitchen. Big and small plates were neatly stacked underneath it and right behind them was an old fashioned red stove kettle. She reached for it to fill it with some water, but not before she went half way up the stairs, which was right beside it all.
“Hello?”
“Welcome.”
Lani shot around, in the fright dropping the kettle which fell down the stairs, the noise echoing through the house like thunder.
“Mr Larson?”

She knocked again, worry creeping up within her. A thousand thoughts tumbled through her head. What if nobody was here? There was nowhere to go. A mix of frustration and anxiety caused a few tears as she knocked again. This time a bit harder. Still nothing. And not even a sound of creaking floorboards. Lani pulled the phone from her pocket, but there was no service whatsoever.
“Goddammit.”
In her anger she grabbed the door handle with the intend to let out her irritation only to find it was unlocked. Carefully, she opened the house and stepped inside.
“Hello?”
Did she really fall for a scam when she booked a room at this place? It had all looked so genuine.
“Hello?” She tried again, this time a bit louder, but still no reply.
Taking a couple of deep breaths trying to steady her heartbeat, she moved along the hall from door to door until she reached the kitchen.
“Hello?” Still no reply. She found the light switch and turned it on. Looking around, there was a lived in feeling, tidy and looked after, but nothing that would give her a clue as to where her host was.

#SnippetSunday “Why on earth was she here anyway?” #Sundayblogshare #Romance

Happy Sunday ♥

And (she) walked along the road. It would’ve been so much better and less boring if she had charged her headphones.
So she walked. Occasionally looking over her shoulder, hoping for a car to come along. But then again, she promised her grandma she wouldn’t talk to strangers.
Why on earth was she here anyway?
To meet her father. It was enough incentive to keep going.
After a little more than an hour Lani was able to see the house in the distance. Relief rushed through her. She was thirsty and tired. And with the sun already setting over the mountains, it was about time to reach her destination. Although tempted to take another couple of pictures, she kept going.
She liked the house, despite being so far away from civilisation. It hadn’t looked that isolated on the map when she first looked for accommodation. But it was ideal and close to where she needed to go. Or in this case to find someone.
Lani stepped closer and onto the front porch. The quietness around was only disturbed by the sound of a few insects buzzing around. A shiver ran down her spine as she moved to the front door and knocked. There were no lights inside the house. It was still light, yet, she would’ve expected one or two lights on already inside.
