Today’s hook

He rubbed his chin with his fingers, his unease now obvious, and although she almost felt sorry for him, she tried not to care. She needed to know more. And not just the what, but why and who as well.
Only a week earlier, Sophie had received the call from Mr. O’Connor telling her about an inheritance. Initially, she’d thought it had been a horrible joke when he’d given her details on where to pick up airplane tickets to Hobart. It was important for her to come, he’d explained. Some legality she hadn’t understood. Something about her having to sign documents for the transfer of ownership of some assets. It’d sounded too farfetched at the start, but after some research on the firm with the help of a friend, it sounded valid, and she’d hoped her life was finally turning around for the better.

The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.Twenty-two-year-old

Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?

5star Review:

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a
feel good storycentered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!

Hauled back from her thoughts, she heard Mr. O’Connor say, “I believe she was a distant relative of yours. I’m afraid I don’t have any further details.”
Sophie arched an eyebrow in disbelief, doubting the accuracy of it all. Not only did she try not to question his competence as a lawyer, but she also hoped it wasn’t a dreadful misunderstanding.
With a slight shrug of her shoulder, she asked, “Why not?”
He met her gaze steadily. “Pardon me?”
Sitting up straight, she repeated, “Why not? Why aren’t there any further details?”

Sophie shrugged. “I wouldn’t have a clue.” Then turned her attention back on Mr. O’Connor and asked the same thing. “Who is she?”
The handsome attorney on the other side of the massive desk leaned forward and rested his elbows on it before he started to repeat his earlier speech. Although hearing his words, Sophie still found it all very hard to comprehend. Here she was in this old office, furnished with heavy antique oak furniture, the curtains in a pretty shade of aubergine, and the carpet beneath her shoes thick and warm in a matching shade, hearing about an inheritance from someone she’d never even heard of.
Startled by the subtle sound of the clock chiming across the road, Sophie’s gaze turned to the window, where she saw the post office building across the road. It looked impressive and old. It’d been only a few hours since they’d arrived in Hobart, the most southern capital in Australia, but she already liked it. A lot more than Sydney, the place she’d lived all her life.

3D-Little Beginnings There was a long pause. “That’s him,” Olivia whispered. “I haven’t caught up to him, yet, but I still believe he’s got a solid reason.”
And suddenly, Jeri was very much interested in that reason. “Honey, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Gone was the smile on her face. The smile he’d been responsible for putting there.
Mr. Sex-on-legs could stick his magic wand up his backside.

 Blurb:
A blind date that doesn’t happen might lead to love.
After her divorce, Jeri Belmont moved to Hobart and now runs a successful art gallery. When her niece sets her up with a neighbour, Jeri expects a blind date like all the others. But she never expected her date wouldn’t even sow up because of
her age. Despite feeling unjustly judged, when she unexpectedly runs into him
again, she finds it hard to ignore Ely’s charm.
Ely Lennox knows he shouldn’t have skipped the blind date because of the lady’s
age. After all, it had only been a date, not a lifetime commitment. When his carpentry business takes him right to the woman he bailed out on, his guilt
turns into regret when he finds out she’s everything a man could hope for. How
can he convince Jeri he made a big mistake?
Will she forgive him? Or is she hiding behind something else?

Little Beginnings by Iris Blobel is a wonderful love story about a 38 year old woman who learns to trust a man again, and who comes to realise that there is no obstacle two people in love can’t overcome. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters who were a memorable addition to the story, and I loved the humourous dialogue, the story’s emotional depth, and the engaging plot. This is a character driven story which I loved from beginning to end and I’m sure you will too!

Carmen’s #RomanticIdeas for this summer to rekindle the spark:
Learn a romantic foreign language.
Take an intro-class together for a language that neither of you speak – French, Italian, Spanish or Romanian simply sound romantic – and practice whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears, in that new language!
Cuddle up together in a horse-drawn carriage ride.
You’ll probably feel like you are in a romantic comedy, and that’s a good thing.
Read each other’s Tarot Cards.
Take turns reading each other’s fortunes using Tarot Cards. Even if you don’t believe in astrology, it will make for one fun evening spent together.
Go on a ghost tour together.
Find the nearest ghost tour in your city and head out on the adventure together. At least you’ll have someone’s hand to hold onto should things start to get a little spooky.
Feed each other fondue at home.
It really doesn’t get sexier than feeding each other chocolate dipped strawberries.

Excerpt

He watched the windows of the house for several days, hidden by the mantle of the falling night. Taking advantage of the cover the lime trees in the garden offered, he avidly followed her every movement across the bedroom. He could have hidden in the attic as he had a few times, watching her through the peephole he’d made, but from here, he could see her better.

He had a cautious nature, yet wasn’t afraid of being spotted. There was little likelihood of his presence being announced to the police as a stalker. After all, they’d been seen together quite often.

./././././.

The first drop of rain fell with a splash on the windshield jolting Barbara back to reality. She opened her eyes and slipped her small handbag into the glove box. The money she received would help her solve many of the “not-for-now” things, like replacing the floorboard in the bedroom and repairing the leaking pipe in the kitchen.

She looked through the windshield at the pelting rain washing over her car. She reached for the key to start the engine when a faint light flickered on top of the steering wheel.

Barbara, Barbara, a voice came, more like a whisper, in her mind. He killed me. He just killed me…

Who are you, dear? Who killed you?

Kathleen… He killed me.

./././././././.

“Detective, please, don’t  think I’m raving, but I have to ask. Do you know someone called Mabel?”

The man riveted Barbara with his dark blue eyes for a moment. Barbara cringed inside. He’ll rebuke me. The man passed a hand over his face and nodding, he answered, “Yes, I know a Mabel. My… my wife.”

“How long ago did she pass away?”

In a voice that was more than a little surprised he asked, “How on earth did you know she’s dead?”

“She’s here,” Barbara replied in a small voice.

His eyebrows shot up in disbelief. The steel in his voice was hard to miss. “What? What are you talking about?” He spun round and looked at the apparently empty space behind him.

Tell him I no longer suffer, Barbara heard Mabel’s voice.

Detective Fisher was still staring blankly around him.

“She wants me to tell you she no longer suffers. She hopes you’ve found in your heart the power to forgive her for committing suicide… for jumping off the bridge.”

The detective looked straight into Barbara’s eyes. The grief she saw in them was almost palpable.

3D-Little BeginningsLifting her arms as if to scream, Jeri smiled instead, not sure why. And not sure why this guy was affecting her so much. But she liked him. A lot. Looking around, she noticed that, even though he’d stuck to her requests, he had added a few little
extras. Cringing, she stepped closer to inspect what he’d created. Looking closer, though, she saw he’d used a couple of files, probably for measurement—and hey, that was actually a nifty little addition.
She smiled and said to herself, “Mr. Ely. I like your magic wand.”
Her phone buzzed and dragged her back from her daydream. It was Olivia.
“Honey, I’m having a good mood moment here, so if you’re calling me about the
blind date—”
“Calling about the exhibition on Sunday,” Olivia interrupted. “I was wondering
with you having the office re-done whether you’d need help earlier. I can spare a few hours tomorrow.”
“That’d be much appreciated, although it seems the shelf-maker isn’t as messy as
I thought.”
“Shame you didn’t tell me about your shelving before. My neighbour next door is
a carpenter. Ely’s always got brilliant ideas and is an excellent carpenter.”
Jeri clung to the phone as if it were a lifeline. As her eyes swept across the plastic
cover in the room, she felt a lump in her throat and an ache in her heart. She
remembered his name clearly: Ely. It was an uncommon name, and she was sure there weren’t two Elys working as carpenters in Hobart.
What would the odds be on that?
“Your neighbour from last night?”

He nodded “We all have them.”
She looked around herself. “Thanks for covering up the floor and the furniture.”
Lifting his shoulder in a shrug, he said  nonchalantly, “It was the magic of the wand.”
Why was she surprised that he made her laugh again?
“Considering that you don’t believe in magic, you use it quite a bit.”
He chuckled and good grief, even that simple sound made her quiver.
“The customer is king.”
Hands on hips, eyebrows arched, she said, “Do I look like a man?”
Ely grabbed his keys and held them up. “Now heading to the hardware store.”
Jeri stared at the door through which her carpenter had left. She was so taken
aback by the fact he’d never replied that her jaw was still open.
Then she heard him call from down the hallway. “Only a fool would mistake you

The morning went by quickly, and it was just before noon when Ely went in
search for Jeri. He found her in a little kitchen, absentmindedly dipping the tea bag in her cup. He was close enough to see tears on her face. When Jeri saw him, she wiped them away with an angry swipe of her hand and got to her feet.
“How can I help you?” she said, with the same smile from earlier that morning.
The smile that didn’t make it to her eyes.3D-Little Beginnings
The question Are you all right? hung on the tip of his tongue, but he wouldn’t go there. A woman in tears was a recipe for disaster. He’d learnt that more than once from his sister and the occasional girlfriend.
“I’ve got to head out and grab some material,” Ely said.
She took a deep sigh, grabbed her tea, and stepped towards him. “I forgot to tell you that you’re more than welcome to use the kitchen.”
“Thanks, but I grabbed something on the way.”
He was about to turn and head out when he stopped. “To ask whether you’re okay
seems ridiculous, but I…” He scratched the back of his head. “I…”
“I’m fine,” she reassured him. Yet, there was no smile on her face and her
expression didn’t give anything away.
“It’s kind of on the tip of my tongue to call you a liar, but I’d better not,
considering that I need the money from this job.”

He followed her into a small room in the back of what seemed an add-on part of the building.
“This is the room in need of more space.”
Looking around, knocking on the wall here and there, stepping over piles of
paperwork and files, he said, “I can see that.”
“Can you do some magic here?” she asked hesitantly.
He laughed softly. “Magic is for dreamers. I’m a carpenter.”
