(5 star review)

I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. I moved a little forward, back into Jesse’s POV – having a beer with his friends, Noah and Harrison.

Enjoy ♥

Jesse stared at the beer in his hand and barely listened to his friend’s story. His mind was still reeling from the events during the day. Meeting the mother and daughter, but also finding another dead roo on the road, with a small joey inside her still alive. He would never get used to the sight, even after five years in the job. Road accidents happened, he knew that, but he wished people would care and move the roo or call it in straight away.
“Earth to Jesse.”
His friend’s voice hauled him back to the present. “Sorry, mate.”
“What’s up, Jesse?” his friend, Harrison, asked. “Noah’s joke was actually quite funny for a change and you didn’t even move. Trouble at work?”
Jesse looked from one friend to the other. Halfbrothers, who’d been separated for most of their lives. He enjoyed the occasional night out, but tonight didn’t feel right.
“Sorry, Noah. My mind’s somewhere else.”
“Somewhere or with someone?” Harrison asked.
Jesse cocked a brow.
“Mate, this is Beauty Bay. People talk. Everyone knows about the girl who helped you with the joey today. Word is, you were exceptionally nice to her.”
“Geez, Harrison, will you shut up. You make me sound like a paedophile. Her name is Zoe. She’s only moved her recently with her mother after her parents’ divorce.”
“Zoe Kendricks?”
Jesse’s raised his eyebrows. “You know her?”
“Her mother works with us. Yeah, I know her. Cute little thing. Taking her parents’ separation hard.”
With a nod, Jesse replied, “That’s the feeling I got. Caring for the joey did her good it seemed. So I told her as much as possible about it.”
“How did you meet her in the first place? Don’t get me wrong, I like Lexie. She’s a great addition to the team, but—”
“Oh, I know who you’re talking about,” Noah interrupted him. “Dad says, great knowledge, but lacking people’s skills.”
Jesse choked back a snort. Yes, that was the impression he got as well.

DEFYING RULES

A little reminder in the last post, Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

And, he was a school parent. A big reason to not think of him as an attractive man. Or think of him at all.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
With heat creeping up her cheeks, she figured he meant the break in and nodded.
He scratched the back of his head. “I’m not your nosy neighbour, don’t get me wrong, but I saw the police and remembered Nick telling me your family’s in Melbourne. Anything I can help you with?”
She sighed inwardly. Not only attractive, but very generous as well. Shaking her head, she replied, “I’m fine, but I appreciate your offer.”
“Will you be all right to stay here on your own? I’m sure we can organise a room at the hotel for a few nights.”
Something stirred inside. His caring nature and his generosity were so overwhelming, and possibly the stress of the previous two hours, she didn’t want to but she started to cry.
Ethan stepped even closer and gently drew her into an embrace. Common sense told her to pull away, but it was such a relief to finally be able to let out all the pent-up emotions. The tension, the fear, and her body’s betrayal at the wrong time.

DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again. A couple of weeks later, Addison has her first day at work, as a primary school teacher.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

She followed Jax, the Grade 6 teacher, and Mary, the Prep teacher, out of the staff room and along the hall to attend the first day assembly. The noise of the excited children made her smile and excitement filled her as well. Addison went into her classroom filled with twenty-something little children, dressed in the uniform of green, forty-something eyes staring at her in anticipation.

She sighed deeply and knelt in front of the children. “Okay, my little ducklings. I know you’re all excited, and actually so am I, but I’m hoping you’ll be on your best behaviour.” She took the hand of the girl at the very front. “Hello pumpkin. Can you show me the way to the assembly hall?”

Nodding her small head, the girl said eagerly, “Yes, Miss—”

Addison winked at the little girl. “My name is Miss Ryker.”

“Yes, Miss Ryker.”

“Let’s go pumpkin. We’ll be right behind you.”

Addison followed her little herd of children into the assembly hall and watched them as they gave little hand waves to parents and some grandparents. One of the boys high-fived a man and as she looked up, her heart almost skipped a beat.

It was the dad with no name from the Christmas concert.

Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”
Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”
Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip. “Man, it’s hot.”
Zach pondered on that thought just like Mia, when she suddenly said, “You need to cut the grass, Zach.”
He almost spilled the drink. “Good grief, thanks, honey.”

BLURB:
Zach Taylor, an escort in Sydney, living in Hobart, enlists the help of Natasha Peterson when his teenage friend, Mia, runs away. He soon finds out that the ‘dragon’ is really more of a kitten. And although Natasha, Mia’s teacher, is attracted to him as well, she has her own problems to deal with, not to mention her initial reaction to Zach’s occupation.

Will Zach’s job keep him from a chance to be with Natasha?

Life is good for teenager Mia Levesque. But when Darren Schuster shows up in Hobart, she knows something is up once Sophie and Mark cut their weekend away short and rush home in the middle of the night. When Sophie won’t answer Mia’s questions, emotions run high, and Zach confirms Darren’s identity to Mia. Disappointed, angry, and feeling alone, Mia runs away.

Will life settle back into a routine for Mia once she finds out about the stranger in her life?

Short Excerpt:
Noah Cooper brushed down his horse and left him in the corral. He strode across the expanse of property and entered the house through the mudroom. Removing his hat, he scrubbed a hand through his sandy-blond hair. It was time for a haircut. The aroma of beef stew wafted from the kitchen. “You in there, Annie?”

“I am, and I washed the floors this morning, so take your boots off.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Chuckling, Noah sat on a bench to do as ordered. In the five months since he’d discovered the woman he believed to be his aunt was actually his mother, Noah had experienced a new kind of love. They were still working out the kinks, but life was good. Noah stepped into the kitchen, kissed Annie on the cheek, and sat at the oak table that was older than he was. “I picked up the mail. Nothing but bills and junk.” He held up a square envelope. “Except for this.” Annie reached for it, but Noah pulled it back with a smile. “Sorry, it’s addressed to me.”

Annie wiped her hands on a dishtowel, her inquisitive gray eyes staring down at him. “Who’s it from?”

“I don’t know. There’s no return address.” He tore open the flap and pulled out a floral note card. A small photograph of a young girl, maybe thirteen or fourteen, spilled out. She had golden-brown hair that fell past her shoulders, large green eyes, and a slightly crooked smile that mimicked his own. He turned the photo over to find the name Hope and age fourteen written on the back.

“Who’s this?” Annie took the photo from him and studied it.

Tingles ran up Noah’s spine. “I’m not sure.” Could it possibly be? Before reading the note, he zeroed in on the signature at the bottom. The breath escaped his lungs in a whoosh.

“You okay?” Annie sat next to him and put a hand on his arm.

It took a moment before he could answer. He hadn’t heard from his first love in nearly sixteen years. Not since the day he’d signed the adoption papers relinquishing any rights to his unborn child. “It’s from Amanda.”

Annie let out a long, slow whistle while holding up the picture. “So this is…”

Noah took the picture from her. “My daughter.”

5star Review:
“I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.”

“Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!”

Today’s hook

“Thank you, Clara Bellinger. Thank you, whoever you are,” Sophie said aloud.

All such a far cry from what they were used to in Sydney. All they’d been able to afford had been a single room with the bathroom across the hall — which they’d had to share with other tenants. Another thought popped into her mind, and it was like she suddenly comprehended what she was seeing.

“Mr. O’Connor. There’s still some furniture.”

Silence.

Sophie looked around the doorframe and down the hall. “Mr. O’Connor?”

“I’m in the kitchen.”

Mia appeared from one of the rooms. Sophie took her hand and walked towards the front of the house and into the kitchen. It was equally as beautiful as the rest of the house. It had the same old feeling to it. The cupboards had a pine timber look. The table and chairs near the bay window seemed to be made of the same material. There was a dishwasher and a washing machine. The cooking area had a very old-fashioned stove with pots and pans hanging on hooks from the ceiling. She looked over to the window, which had a wonderful view outside to the front yard. After a long moment of taking in every little bit of the kitchen, she turned and spotted Mark.
