Happy Sunday

Today I will continue with Jon & Piper’s story

Today’s Snippet

Last line from the previous snippet:
“That’d be lovely.” She heard her own words. “I look forward to it.”
“Me too,” he replied just above a whisper with a smile lingering on his lips.
And she thought the messages had kept her awake… that smile did all sorts of things to her.
She let out a huff as she ambled back to her cabin. How the hell could she even think of another man as being attractive after what Cameron had put her through. She lost everything. Her money. Her house. Her life. Thanks to him, she had to live in a small cabin. Not only that, it was a shared accommodation on top of that. Although, she wouldn’t complain about her neighbour.
Actually, yes she would, because she didn’t want to think of a male person to be attractive, handsome, or even sexy.
Good Lord her neighbour was sexy. And she was going to have breakfast with him.
Piper shoved the door open with more force than intended and slammed it shut behind herself with equal strength. Clearly, she hadn’t learnt her lesson.
No breakfast with Jon.

decisive moments

by Iris Blobel

Tyson Gaspaldi parked his car, grabbed his surfboard from the boot, and walked across the recreational area to the foreshore. The cold breeze off the ocean went right through him, but it didn’t stop him in his resolve. A sense of contentment seeped through him as he glanced across the nearly empty beach. He liked the idea of being one of only a few out in the water. He loved the surf, the dunes, and the tang of sea air. The stunning blue of the Pacific Ocean was inviting, the sea was perfect with waves breaking cleanly and directly onto the beach. A fishing boat to the left headed towards the harbour, while to the right a small number of people walking briskly along the beach braved the early morning chill. He made a mental note to bring his dad to the foreshore during the afternoon.

With one quick move, he zipped up his wetsuit, jumped into the water, and paddled out to sea. Then he surfed as many waves as possible until the swell died down. Happy with his efforts, he emerged from the sea and shook the water out of his hair. As he walked back towards his car, he struggled with his surfboard against the gentle breeze and had to put it down to get a better grip on it with his hands. A woman sitting only a few metres away from him caught his attention. Even in the small distance he saw that her body trembled with subtle sobs. He hesitated, aware she most likely wanted to be alone and kept walking. Blowing out a huff, he stopped anyway as pity and helplessness grew within him. Another glance towards her, his mind told him to leave her be, yet his manners told him to be kind and do the R U Ok thing. Still unsure whether it was right or not, he walked towards her. After all, the worst that could happen was for her to push him away.

“Hey.” He kept his voice as close to a whisper so he wouldn’t startle her.

“I’m not sure what I expected,” he finally admitted.

Piper moved a strand of hair from her face. “Sorry, I know it’s late. I couldn’t sleep. And … you know … the messages …”

He choked back a soft chuckle. “They were meant to amuse you a little, not to give you sleepless nights.”

“They did. As in, they did amuse me.” She lifted her shoulder in a subtle shrug. “Now I’m here to say thanks. I can’t remember anybody ever care in that way.”

Jon scratched the back of his neck. “Look, I’d like to offer you to—”

“No,” she countered and added with a smile. “No, I really just wanted to say thanks—”

“How about breakfast tomorrow morning. In the camp kitchen. My treat. Bacon and eggs.”

Heat trickled through her as she contemplated his offer. After all, she didn’t know him, only that he’d cared enough to take his time to put a smile on her face with his small notes. She met his gaze as he waited for an answer. Was he not used to wait? He looked sexy enough to have any woman.

“That’d be lovely.” She heard her own words. “I look forward to it.”

Now that Piper was standing in front of her neighbour, a very handsome neighbour none-the-less, to talk to him in person suddenly didn’t seem like a good idea anymore. But she hadn’t been able to go asleep. She’d been tossing and turning in bed, the small messages playing havoc in her mind. In the end, she’d decided to walker over instead of writing another note.

Jon wasn’t at all what she’d imagined. His warm chocolate brown eyes took her in. Was he disappointed in what he saw? More doubt crept up in her. She’d introduced herself. Wasn’t it now his turn to say something? He didn’t. He just stood there, wearing only some track pants, which hung very low on his incredibly sexy body, and a worn-out blue t-shirt with Perth printed right across the chest.

She bit her lip and blew out a breath. “My apologies—”

He held up his hand. “No, don’t be. I—”

“Expected another message?”

That slow smile that spread across his face, was about the sexiest thing she’d seen in a long time.

Yet, why was he message-flirting with his neighbour?

He still contemplated his reply when he was distracted by a knock at the door. The door leading into the hallway.

“Mate I have to go. Let me know when you arrive and I’ll be at the airport.”

His friend didn’t have a chance to reply as he disconnected the call as soon as he’d spoken the words. His curiosity was spiked. He moved over to the door and a smile tugged at his lips.

“Hi. I’m Piper from—” She pointed over her shoulder. “—the other cabin.”

“I’m staying a cabin in a caravan park. It has two rooms. It’d be great to have you here for a week or two.”

“Perfect,” Keith replied. “I check flights once I get off the call. How do I get to your place?”

“I’ll pick you up. I reckon it’s only an hour or so to the Melbourne airport.”

“Deal!” He let out a chuckle. “I’ll ask whether Gareth would like to join me.”

Jon joined his friend in the chuckle, knowing how much their friend disliked to fly. “Good luck with that one.”

“Any nice female surfers there?”

Jon scratched the back of his neck, and all of a sudden he thought of his cabin neighbour, wondering whether she surfed as well. “There’s a surfing competition on in town. I’m sure you two will meet someone.”

“How about you?”

He cocked a brow. “What about me?”

His friend let out a snort. “Women. Have you met anybody, yet?”

Keith knew about Paula, who had packed her bags the day she’d been told that Jon had survived the heart attack, but might never fully recover. They’d been engaged for two years and had postponed their wedding until they were both able to take time off. So much for through good times and bad times. No, Jon had burnt his hands when it came to women.

Yet, why was he message-flirting with his neighbour?

“I could take some time off and join you at Bells Beach.”

It’d be good to have a friend around, even if it were for only a few days. So much had happened in the last three months since he’d packed up and left for a holiday. A holiday that had turned out to be much longer than planned. But he wasn’t ready to go back, yet. His boss had been really good and understanding when Jon had asked for six months leave without pay. He had enough money from his investments to keep going for a while, although he’d hoped he would’ve figured out by now He what he wanted in life. Most certainly not his job which had caused him so much stress.

“Can you book me a room at your hotel?” Keith asked, breaking into his thoughts.

“I’m staying a cabin in a caravan park. It has two rooms. It’d be great to have you here for a week or two.”

“I’m near Bells Beach, hoping to get to ride the surf there.” Jon looked out the small window and into the dark distance where the moon shone in all its glory. “And I haven’t made it to Melbourne, yet, let alone Sydney.”

“Mate, we miss you here.”

Keith’s words were spoken in no more than a whisper, but the goosebumps on Jon’s arms reflected the intensity of it. “I miss you guys, too, but I have to do this.”

“Have to?”

Jon blew out a breath. “I have to figure out what I want to do.”

Silence hung heavy between them until his friend broke it. “I could take some time off and join you at Bells Beach.”

“Jon here.”

“Jono. How are you? Where are you?”

A smile tugged at Jon’s lips. He was glad to hear from his friend, Keith. They had a lot to catch up on, yet, Jon also appreciated the distraction from his note-writing adventure.

“I’m in a small place along the Great Ocean Road.”

Keith chuckled. “Must be small. The connection is crap.” He paused. “Tell me, when are you coming home?”

Wasn’t that the million-dollar-question. It’d been ten months since he’d woken up in a hospital barely surviving a heart attack. A heart attack. Him. He was in his mid-thirties and had already Escaped death on his CV.

Before he could change his mind, he wrote on a little note: Considering that we’re in a Neighbour-relationship, may I ask for your name? As before, he snuck into the hallway and slid the piece of paper under the door. He stood, but before he returned to his cabin, he still and listened. It was quiet. When he took a step back, he saw that the lights were off as well. Disappointment trickled through him, he’d been looking forward to more old-fashioned messaging. Shoulders slouched, he sauntered back, but picked up speed when he heard the buzzing of his phone.

“Jon here.”
