Today’s Snippet

Before he could change his mind, he wrote on a little note: Considering that we’re in a Neighbour-relationship, may I ask for your name? As before, he snuck into the hallway and slid the piece of paper under the door. He stood, but before he returned to his cabin, he still and listened. It was quiet. When he took a step back, he saw that the lights were off as well. Disappointment trickled through him, he’d been looking forward to more old-fashioned messaging. Shoulders slouched, he sauntered back, but picked up speed when he heard the buzzing of his phone.

“Jon here.”

“Jono. How are you? Where are you?”

A smile spread across Jon’s as he read his neighbour’s note. Neighbour-relationship? He chuckled. Despite the seriousness behind it all, he actually enjoyed their game of writing / receiving messages. Hopefully, it was also distracting her from her worries. Only a few minutes ago he’d opened the door to the hallway, but hadn’t heard anything, but the TV.  Was he reading too much into her words? Did she think he’d complaint about the noise that made her apologise it wouldn’t happen again? Clearly, his remark that it’d broken his heart was enough indication that he was trying to lighten up the mood. Good grief, he was overthinking what was supposed to have been a little lift-me-up for his neighbour.

Should he continue?

Before he could change his mind, he wrote on a little note: Considering that we’re in a Neighbour-relationship, may I ask for your name?

She picked up the piece of paper, made her way to the shared hallway, and carefully slid her second note under his door. Unlike before, she snuck back to her rooms, giggling like a small girl hiding secrets from her parents. Giddiness swept across her and her body tingled when she finished her cup of tea.

Good Lord, she was desperate for a life. Small notes from a stranger had her beaming with excitement like a teenager.

She blew out a breath, again letting her mind wonder where she had gone wrong in her marriage for her husband to betray her so badly.

She glanced over to the door, but no return note was to be seen. Something like disappointment trickled through her as she sat on the couch. She placed her cup onto the table and reached for the TV remote. The movie she decided on didn’t hold her attention, though, and she lulled into a snooze.

She read it again. Was he flirting with her? Or showing honest concern? Had she cried that loud? Embarrassment shot through her again and it made her cry all over again. Good Lord, she was a mess. She returned to the kitchen bench and finished her tea before taking a tentative sip. Closing her eyes, she devoured the taste of the hot drink for a moment as it filled her body with a comforting warmth. How she hated to admit that her dad had been right when he’d warned her not to get involved with Darren. But she’d been head over heels in love and none of her father’s “gut feelings” had convinced her. She choked back a laugh as she remembered the many Christmases they’d spent at her parents’ home. They’d been married for over six years, happily married she thought, and each Christmas she let her dad know just how happy and successful her relationship with Darren had been. He’d climbed the promotion ladder, she’d been content in her position in the local veterinary practice, big house, big holidays, big cars … they’d had it all.

Until last week.

The subtle breeze coming through the window moved her neighbour’s note. Again, a smile formed on her lips and she reached for the notepad.

“Long story,” she muttered as she scribbled the words. “I’m sorry I broke your heart already so early in our … hmm … neighbour-relationship. It won’t happen again. I promise.”

She knocked and returned to her part of the cabin. Still with a hint of a smile on her lips and her embarrassment fading, she headed towards the small kitchenette to find the kettle. It was time for a cup of tea and a nice movie to relax and escape her current life. She needed to get away from her thoughts, her troubles that were eating at her. As she reached for the milk out of the fridge, a subtle thumping noise from the hall shifted her attention to the door again. Another message. She grinned, placed the milk on the bench, and picked up the next note: Hmm. I’d say that’s a lie. I heard your tears and it broke my heart.

Piper stood in search for a tissue box. How she hated to be here. She still couldn’t believe how she’d lost everything because of Darren. And what the hell had he done with all the money anyway? Good Lord, she wanted to punch him, preferably in his handsome face. Not only did he take all her money, no, he also sold the home from under her feet.

She glanced around the small cabin, her new home until she’d have enough money to buy a house. There weren’t enough words to express her gratitude towards Harrison who offered her this place to stay until … well until she was going to find something bigger, or at least better.

Something in the corner caught her attention. She walked over to the door, which Harrison told her lead to the shared bathroom. A little note was lying on the floor. She frowned and picked it up.

My name is Jon, I’m your cabin neighbour. Hope you are okay.

For the first time in days, a smile crossed her lips as she read it.  And she didn’t know why exactly. Possibly because there was another person in this world who cared, persisted enough to write this note. She’d heard the knock but hadn’t felt like talking to anybody. Reading the note again, she reached for the tissues on the shelf next to the door. Suddenly, an idea formed in her head, and she now searched for a piece of paper.

A few minutes later she stood at other side of the hall and slid her own note underneath the door: Thank you Jon. I appreciate your concern. I’m good.

She knocked and returned to her part of the cabin.

The sobbing stilled for a fleeting moment before he heard a scream in frustration. Raising his brows, he stepped to the door and knocked. An instant silence fell upon the room, and he knocked again. Nothing.

A mix of emotions surged through him which he wasn’t able to sort. Curiosity, wanting to know more about the person on the other side of the door. Irritation that she ignored him, but most of all a sense of worry. What on earth, or possibly who, could’ve upset her so much to have her distressed like this.

He returned to his part of the cabin, searched for a notepad and a pen and wrote: My name is Jon, I’m your cabin neighbour. Hope you are okay. With the piece of paper in hand, he returned, knocked again, and slid his message under the door. The subtle noise of footsteps told him that she’d come closer to pick it up and he went back to his rooms with a smile on his face.

Jon reached for his towel and headed towards the bathroom in the hall. He knocked at the door, even though he saw that there was no light filtering through the small gap at the floor. No one answered, so he stepped in. He placed his towel and soap on the small chair, undressed, and turned on the both tabs. Once the water was at the right temperature. For the next few minutes he enjoyed the warm spray hit his body. He lathered soap all over his body and washed his face. The shower soon ran out of hot water and he rushed to rinse off. A little while later he had towelled off and dressed. He reached for his belongings, opened the door, and switched off the lights. About to return to his part of the cabin, he stopped and listened.

Someone was sobbing.

It wasn’t his business, so he turned and walked towards his area. But stopped as he grabbed the door handle.

His neighbour’s sobs increased, the distress now obvious. He blew out a breath, turned, but hesitated.

#SnippetSunday “We had a big house in Perth—” #NewRelease #99c #hotdeal #BookBuzz #eReaders

Happy Sunday
I have a new release, a story that started here on Snippet Sunday.
This is the 4th book in the Alinta Bay series.
Most of you might remember the story … hopefully you liked it, it’s only 99c as a release special ♥
THANK YOU

Today’s Snippet

“Well, so do I, but I am trying to do the best in a bad situation. How about we try to get out of this jungle of trees and next weekend we’ll check the real estate agent for a bigger house?”

“We had a big house in Perth—”

Lexie looked into the distance and then back at her daughter. “Look, I get it that you’re not happy with the current situation. But I’m trying my best here.” She inhaled a long breath to calm herself. “I don’t really think this is the right place to have this discussion, but maybe the right time for you to ponder about the alternatives. Perth, big house, your mother working massive hours to afford it, which would mean you’re in after care, or Alinta Bay, small house, hopefully we’ll find something bigger soon, and I can drop you off and pick you up from school, plus we will have enough money for two holidays a year.”

Without waiting for an answer, Lexie turned again, but didn’t move. Cursing under her breath, she conceded that they were lost. And it scared her. A lot.

“Mum?”

Lexie whirled around again. “What?” But as soon as she saw her daughter’s timid look in her eyes, she apologised straight away. “I’m sorry, sweetie. But—”

Zoe shook her head. “Mum, listen,” she said just above a whisper.

Lexie focussed and followed the girl’s gaze.

“Look! A car.”

“Hallelujah,” Lexie murmured.

“Can you run?”

Hands on hips, Lexie said, “I’m old, but I’m no geriatric.”

“Well, duh, Mum. Run.”

Lexie Marshall looked around, seeing nothing but trees. Worry crept into her mind. It’d been a while since they’d seen another soul. The old farmer on the tractor had warned them, but she’d been certain she had known the way back to the car.

“Mum, are you sure you know where you’re going?” Zoe asked.

Loosely circling her shoulders to rid herself of the kink in them, Lexie replied, “Sweetie, I’m sure we’re almost there. It can’t be far.”

“Such a stupid idea to go for a bushwalk.”

Lexie stopped and turned, looking at her daughter, undecided whether to be annoyed or feel guilty. “I thought it was a great idea. We’re stuck in that small house seven days a week with the walls closing in on us.”

Zoe met her gaze, tears shimmering in her eyes. “Not my fault we moved here.”

Massaging the temples, she took a deep breath. “I hope we’re not going through the separation discussion again. Your dad and I drifted apart. Nothing I can do about it.”

The girl lifted her shoulder in a shrug. “That didn’t mean you have to drift all the way to this godforsaken place.”

“This godforsaken place is giving me a chance to work in my profession as a lawyer during school hours only so you’re not on your own at home.”

Zoe shrugged again. “I miss my friends.”
