Today’s Snippet

He drove to his allocated cabin, parked, and carried his bags inside. It was a nice little place, with a small bedroom, kitchen, and a separate living area. Small, but comfortable, nicely decorated. A lockable sliding door in the corner led to a hallway, which had a door to the bathroom to the left and another sliding door at the other end. He assumed that this was the other cabin.

He returned to his side and unpacked some of his things, including his washing for which he’d have to find a laundry. Next, he flicked through the information book and ordered a pizza to be delivered. He wasn’t in the mood to go out tonight.

He was watching the news when he heard a knock at the door. Expecting the pizza delivery, he got up and opened the door.

“Sorry to disturb you, Mr Fuentes. And my apologies as well for letting you know that someone will, in fact, be in the second half of the cabin from Tuesday onwards.” The woman from the reception bit her lip. “It’s a female customer. I hope it won’t inconvenience you too much with the bathroom.”

That didn’t quite compute with him, but he was too tired to care. He had somewhere to stay for the next week. Not the hotel room he had hoped for, but considering the circumstances, he was glad he had somewhere to stay. And on short notice he’d decided to stay for the competition. Possibly have a surf as well. The town looked okay and it’d be good to catch up on a few things.

Jon had been on the road now for five months, enjoying his travels across the country. Obviously, he’d heard about the Great Ocean Road and its world-famous surf beach, so, of course, he wouldn’t let the opportunity go by.

And even if the other cabin was going to have a guest in it as well, it’d wouldn’t hurt him to share a bathroom, after all, a few months ago he’d stayed at a hostel and had to share a bathroom with about half a dozen people.

Jon stepped into the reception of the caravan park where a middle-aged woman looked up with a smile.

“How can I help you?”

“Hi. Ella from the local hotel just called regarding a booking of a cabin. My name is Jonathan Fuentes.”

She nodded. “Mr Fuentes. Yes. You’re lucky. This is the last cabin available.”

He reached for his credit card. “So I’ve heard. Apparently a big surfing event starting tomorrow.”

A genuine smile spread across her face, which took around five years of her face. Not to mention that it was contagious, because now he had a smile on his lips as well.

“The event only happens every two years, but when it does, it’s quite a buzz in town.” She entered his details into the system and said, “I hope Ella explained that this cabin is privately owned and shares a bathroom. No one is in the other cabin. So you won’t have a problem.”

She blinked the memory away before the tears would start again. With a quick flick, she threw away the last bit of the sandwich and crossed the road. Harrison Hendrix was her neighbour’s cousin and although Piper wasn’t best friends with Kristen, they had invited each other to barbeques or the occasional walks along the beach. It was during one of those back yard parties that she’d briefly met Hendrix.  Good looks clearly ran in the family genes.

The door to the reception was open, most likely to let some fresh air in after the humid last couple of days. She gave it a slight knock anyway and the receptionist looked up.

“Piper. How are you coping? Harrison is already waiting for you.”

Piper followed along the small hallway to an office at the other end where Harrison stepped towards, greeting her with a handshake.

“Hello Piper. Would you like to have a coffee or tea?”

She shook her head. “That’s very kind, but not at the moment. Thank you.”

He ushered her into his office where she took a seat on a small double seater. Harrison reached for a notepad and a pen and sat as well. “Let’s get you sorted.”

Just these few words already cause a wave of relief within her.

A quick glance at her watch told her that she didn’t have much time for lunch, although food was the last thing on her mind. Her stomach disagreed, though. Piper rushed to the bakery, bought a sandwich and made her way to the Hendrix Law Firm. Despite some of the tension easing, she was still scared to her bones, desperately trying to figure out where her marriage had gone so wrong that Cameron would just disappear, no less with all of their belongings. As she walked along the road, eating her lunch, she remembered the first time she’d met him. A giggle escaped her lips as she recalled her school trip to the mountains and the day she skied right into Cameron. They’d both tumbled down the slope for a few metres until they came to a stop, covered in snow. They’d been all right, except Piper’s ego, that’d received a big dint.

Today’s Snippet

There was some silence before he finally spoke. “Hello Piper. I think we met at Kristen’s Christmas barbeque last year. When you say desperate, can you clarify as in how desperate and whether it’s a legal issue.”

Slightly taken aback by the way he approached her plea for help, she replied, “Desperate as in on a scale from one to ten, I’d say fifteen, and as for legal …” She paused trying to find the right words. “My husband emptied our joint bank account and sold our house leaving me with nothing from the end of next week.”

Again there was a silence, but he heard him whisper, but not to her. It took a moment until he said, “Can you come to my office in about thirty minutes?”

She nodded, more to herself. “Most certainly. Just a little heads up, I’m desperate for help, but it might be a while until I’ll be able to pay your fees.”

He let out a soft chuckle. “The fact that you’re bringing up the payment of fees while in this unfortunate situation, tells me that I won’t have to worry too much about it.”

Relief flooded her, so intense, she had to lean her head against the head rest. “I’ll see you in thirty minutes.” She took a deep breath and added, “Thank you so much.”

Today’s Snippet

Piper rushed to her car, got in, and took some deep breath to strangle the urge to throw up. Where had things gone wrong?

She closed her eyes, trying hard to visualise Darren’s face. But as soon as she did pain shot through her. The pain of betrayal. The pain of six years of marriage and him leaving her the worst possible way.

Letting out a big breath, she straightened her shoulders and reached for her phone. It took her a moment to find the number, and although not sure whether it was the right start, she had to start somewhere to sort this mess.

Harrison Hendrix answered on the third ring.

“Hi, this is Piper Elliot. I am your cousin Kristen’s neighbour and I’m desperate for some help.”

He looked down to his hands as he reached for a pen, moving it between his fingers. Apparently, the conversation must’ve reached a stage he was uncomfortable with.

Well, so was she.

“Your account was in both your names, legally he had the right to draw from it as much as he needed. As for the house, well, it was in his name alone…”

He didn’t finish the sentence but let her assume the rest.

Tears stinging behind her eyes, she stood. “When do I have to be out of the house?”

Raising from his chair as well, he replied, “I don’t have the details. That is a question for your husband or the real estate agent.”

She nodded and left. The need to get out of the building for some fresh air was so intense, she let go of all good manners like saying thanks or goodbye. She rushed out his door and through the entrance, no longer able to hold back the tears. She was going to be homeless. No way would she be able to find something decent with a part time job within such a short time.

#SnippetSunday “What do you mean the account is empty?” #freeread #Sundayblog #MFRWAuthor #amwriting

Happy Sunday. Time to move on to another story while I concentrate on the Bigalow story.
As mentioned before, it’s challenging and I want to get it right.
Let me introduce you to Piper, who is part of another Alinta Bay story.
Enjoy ♥

Today’s Snippet

Piper Elliott stared at her bank advisor, not comprehending his words. “What do you mean the account is empty?”

Mr Lee had been patiently explaining and replying to all her questions for the last half an hour, but it didn’t make sense to her. Again, she asked, “What do you mean the account is empty?”

Piper wasn’t sure whether his sigh was out of frustration or pity, but at the moment, she couldn’t care less, because the news that there was no money in her account and the house she’d lived in for the last five years with her husband had now been sold.

Mr Lee sat back into his chair, rested is elbows on the armrest and crossed his hands in front of his chest. “I’m sorry Piper, to say it bluntly, your estranged husband cleared the account, mortgaged the house, and placed it on the market.”

“But … how can he … I don’t understand, doesn’t he need my signature to do all this?”

Today’s Snippet

“I’d describe myself more as your guide.”

“My guide?” she repeated. “As in … you know … as in, well, you know a ghost?” She stared at her sandwich and her drink, just the same as twenty years ago when she’d spent the day with her parents out near Bigalow Creek. Her hands moved over the soft picnic rug, but for the life of her she couldn’t remember whether it was the same colour or pattern.

Hauled back from her memories by his touch, she met his gaze.

“Your hands are shaking.”

She didn’t have to check, she knew because her whole body was going through sensations that scared her. Her heart throbbed in her chest and her pulse hammered in her ears she nearly missed his words.

“I’m not a ghost, although I can see where you get confused.”

“A guide?” she asked again. “Why … why would I need a guide?”
