Throwing himself back into the pillow, he tried to sort all the thoughts rushing through his head and deal with the guilt that spread through him.

“You’ve inherited her house and her savings,” he heard Graham saying. “I can call you again in a few days if you’d like me to get everything organised from this end. Unless you’d like to come home.”

Home.

Alinta Bay hadn’t been his home for so many years and the simple word sounded so wrong. Alaska was his home and had been for over six years now. And he was happy.

Yet, why did the simple four-letter word have such an impact on him?

“I’ll come home.” He paused, hardly able to believe his own words. Was this simply an emotional reaction or something he intended to do indeed? “Give me a couple of days. It’s shit weather over here, with a snow front on its way.”

Today, I’d like to dedicate the snippet to a former “snippeter” and fabulous author who sadly passed away too early. Ed Hoornaert’s blog posts were not only his weekly snippets, but full of mischief through the eyes of his cat “Effing Feline”. He was a great writer who was fun, but most of all, very supportive. I will miss him.

Noah Fielding woke to the sound of his phone buzzing relentlessly on the bedside table. Reluctantly removing one arm from under the covers, he reached for his watch, squinting to read the time. Three o’clock in the morning. Who in the hell would call at this crappy time of the day? Or night as it were.

A rumble of thunder almost drowned out the buzzing, but it didn’t go away. With a big sigh, he grabbed the phone and answered. “Hello?”

“Is this Noah Fielding?”

“Who wants to know?”

“My name is Graham Hendrix, and I represent the estate of the late Mrs. Eliza Fielding from Alinta Bay. My apologies, I tried to get the time difference right, but it seems I didn’t.”

He swung his legs to the side of the bed and sat up. “Late?”

“My apologies, Mr. Fielding, your grandmother passed away two days ago. She had pneumonia from which she didn’t recover.”

He held onto the phone like his life depended on it and for several long seconds stared into the darkness. A pain settled in his chest and instinctively he rubbed it with the palm of his hand. “Shit.”

He almost missed Graham’s words, which were spoken in a hushed voice. “My condolences.”

“Why?” Kristen wanted to know.

“I might be able to stay there for the next couple of days,” Molly explained. “At least until the house goes on the market. The lovely Mrs. Fielding passed away two days ago. I’m sure it’ll take a while until people get the house on the market. Gives me enough time to find someone to fix this house.”

She took a sip of a coffee, taking in the rich flavour on her tongue and enjoying the way it warmed her up. The warmth spreading through her body was a comfort as well.

Bewilderment spread across Kristen’s face. “You can’t just stay at the stranger’s house, especially not somebody who has just died.”

Molly thought about it for a moment before she hitched one shoulder in a shrug. “Worth a try.” She took a big bite of the croissant and with a full mouth, she murmured, “I miss her.”

“Eliza Fielding?”

Molly nodded.

Kristen patted Molly’s hand. “How are you holding up?”

Another shrug. “I’m trying not to give in to the memories, but sometimes it’s really hard. I miss my little family.” She swiped her hand across her eyes and stood. “We’d better get moving before it gets too hot.”

“You haven’t called the insurance company yet, have you?”

She shook her head and pulled the wet T-shirt away from her body. “Do I look like I’ve been on the phone? I’ve just cleaned the gutter, which was the reason for the overflow.”

Kristen rolled her eyes. “You do know you’re supposed to clean the gutter before the rain, right?”

“I’m grateful for the coffee. I’m grateful for the croissant. But I’m really not in the mood for any lectures, Kristen.”

Her friend stepped closer and took her into an embrace, despite Molly’s wet clothes. “I’m sorry. I understand. I’m really sorry.” She paused for a second, moved away, and continued. “How about we go inside and attack the situation one step after the other.”

Molly’s shoulders slouched again. “I have no idea what to do.”

“Let’s attack this with a little bit of a plan. I have a day off today, so first, we have the coffee and indulge in the croissants, which are with compliments from Auntie Lisa … then we call the insurance. I brought a few old towels which will probably come in handy. And last, we try to fix as much as we can.”

A surge of hope filled Molly, and suddenly her mind was back in action. “And I’ll call the real estate agent. What’s her name again?”

“Sally?”

“Yes. And I’ll ask her for the huge favour to give me the keys for next door.”

Where was Kristen?

With her hands gripping her head, she looked around to figure out what to do next. More instinctively than anything else, she grabbed some towels and opened windows and doors to let in the heat. Then she went outside, walked around the house to check the damage from outside the laundry door. Fortunately, the problem was easy to fix.

“Friggin’ stupid gutter,” she cursed. A sudden chuckle bubbled out as she remembered her husband had always told her about the importance to keep them clear. Shoulders slouched and head hanging low, she took a moment to recover from her grief. She missed him so much.

Exhaling a long breath, she picked herself up and rushed to the shed to get the ladder. With some difficulty, she placed it against the house wall and quickly rectified the problem, or at least as much as possible. Ten minutes later, the gutter was clean, although twelve hours too late. She looked down at herself after returning the ladder, sticky from sweat and drenched from head to toe. Yet, the sound of a car driving into her driveway put a little smile on her lips.

“Good morning,” Kristen greeted as she climbed out of her vehicle.

Molly had to hold back the urge to run into her friend’s arms to finally give into the tears. When Kristen held up a cup of coffee from the bakery in one hand and a croissant in the other, Molly gave in and choked back a sob.

“This is worse than I expected. I don’t think there’s much you can do except call the insurance company.”

Molly angled her head to the side, staring at her friend, mouth open.

“You haven’t called the insurance company yet, have you?”

A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.”

Silence.

“Kristen, did you go back to sleep?”

“Say that again?”

It gave her some relief to hear her friend sounding more focussed now. “The rain washed my carpet. What’s so hard to understand?”

There was the ominous silence again before Kristen spoke. “Honey, I think I need coffee for this. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll be over.”

About to disconnect, Molly added, “Don’t forget your togs.”

Cautiously, she padded through the house and checked out the extent of the damage. Fortunately, so far there was damage in the front entrance only as well as her front room and the ensuite bathroom. But then she found more. Farther back in the house, the spare bathroom was flooded as well. Walking past the laundry, she heard the sound she was seeking but hoped not to hear. She stepped into the cold part of the house and saw the small gap in the door through which the water was trickling.

Annoyance rushed through her that she hadn’t seen the leak when she’d come in here to get her boots. Slapping a hand on her forehead, she cursed under her breath as she grabbed all the towels she could find in the linen cupboard. A shiver ran through her body. She was cold despite the already warm summer air seeping through the house. Helpless, she focussed on the situation, trying hard not to give in to the threatening tears. Where was Kristen?

Moving her gaze from the soaked carpet towards the door and up to the ceiling, she couldn’t see any obvious signs that the water had come through the roof at this end of the house. She listened carefully, but wasn’t able to hear anything, either, especially not from the bathroom. Taking in a deep breath, she braced herself for the icy water as she was about to put her feet onto the floor. Her spirit plummeted at the thought that the next four months were going to be a nightmare considering the repairs that needed to be made, not to mention dealing with the insurance. And the cost of it all. Trying to tackle one problem at the time, she stood to inspect the damage. Instant pain shot through her as she ran on the tip of her toes, out of the bedroom, along the hall, and to the laundry to find her boots — thanking the winter sale last year, when she’d bought them for next to nothing. With some relief, she saw that only the front part of the house seemed to be affected by the water, but at the same time a rush of resignation shot through her and tears flowed. The splish-splash of her boots as she walked to the kitchen echoed along the hall. With a big sigh, she grabbed the phone and called her friend Kristen.

“Good morning,” her friend answered with a sleepy voice. “What do you want so early in the day?”

A little smile tugged at her lips. She knew her friend wasn’t an early riser, especially not on Mondays. “The rain snuck into my house, and I only need some soap and a brush to give my carpet a clean.

Today’s Snippet

As soon as Molly Reid woke, she sensed something wasn’t right, and yet, it took her three hits on the snooze button until she was anywhere near in charge of her faculties. Her gaze followed the thin light filtering through the small gap of the curtains. With a bit of effort, she reached over and pulled open the drapes a little more. The sun was just rising above the horizon. How much she disliked Mondays and, even worse, how much she hated the rain last night which had kept her awake for hours. It hadn’t been a gentle pitter-patter of rain but a downpour. Of course, she knew the rain was needed, but it could have been a little softer. She stretched, had another yawn, and swung her legs over the bed … when something cold hit her toes. Instinctively, she pulled her legs closer to her chest, a scream escaping her lips. Wide awake now, Molly leaned forward to check for the cause of the coldness. A shiver ran through her from her toes up to her cheeks. She threw herself back onto the bed, before letting out a loud groan and sat up again, taking in the destruction surrounding her. The day couldn’t get any worse.

Disappointed, I merely nod. I wish this plane had a little bar or a social corner. We dodge a few more toilet-bound passengers, when he holds up his hand. “Wait here.”

Really? Does he expect me to take orders already? But I wait. Curiosity killed the cat, I suppose. It’s not that I have something better to do. I watch his body disappear into the semi darkness of the plane. With a sigh, I dodge a few more passengers, before I see Toby return.

“My number in Germany. I have nothing planned the first few days.”

I stare at him, not really sure, what to say or to do.

“I’d love to invite you for a drink he says, but–“

I laugh. “Bad excuse.” Our good rapport is back on track.

“Where’s your seat?”

“Right at the front, next to the exit.”

“And you’re using the toilets at this end of the plane?”

“I was in need of a nice long walk.”

He chuckles, and I notice the tingles down my spine. The thought, that I have no idea where he’s seated comes to mind. “What about you?”

“Nah,” he says. “I’ve had a big walk through the airport.”

“With a gentle slap on his arm, I tell him, “Your seat.”

A smile spreads across his face, and he points to a few rows further down the aisle. Disappointed, I merely nod. I wish this plane had a little bar or a social corner.
