I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. I moved a little forward, back into Lexie’s POV.

Enjoy ♥

Her thoughts were interrupted, though, by the ringing of the phone. She rushed over to the table, grabbed it, and checked the ID. Indecision lingered whether or not to answer the call. But she knew she had to be mature about it. With a casual flick on the phone, she exhaled, and answered.
“Hello Eric.”
“Hi Lexie. How are you?”
She closed her eyes, trying to cope with the wave of nausea his voice caused her. “I’m well, but I’m sure that’s not the reason of your call.”
There was a moment of silence and she did her best not to break it.
“How’s Zoe?”
“She’s in bed. It’s been a long day. If you’d like to talk to your daughter you will need to call—”
“I want to talk to you.”
“Eric,” she said in a sigh. “There’s nothing to talk anymore.”
“I miss you guys.”
Lexie blew out a breath as she opened her eyes. She drew strength from the sound of the water and the sun set across the horizon, creating a spectacle of multiple colours. The view across the ocean had been the main reason to buy the house and she hoped to earn enough money soon to do some renovation and extension to the house, because despite telling Zoe she’d look for a bigger house, she didn’t want to leave this one.
“You should’ve thought about that before you crawled in her bed,” she finally replied.
“I made a mistake—”
“A couple, if I may remind you.”
There was the silence again, but she didn’t push him, she knew it’d set him off in a tirade of angry words.
“You didn’t have to move to the other side of the country.”
“No, I didn’t. But I panicked. I was angry. I needed distance. And to be honest, Zoe is ten years old and this is the first time you show interest in her.”
“Lexie, I’m—”
“Spare me the words, Eric.” She paused to take a calming breath. “Look it’s late here. I had a big day and still have a few things to organise. I’ll make sure Zoe will call you tomorrow.”
“I could take a few days off—”
She didn’t let him finish the sentence, but disconnected the words. So many promises. She’d heard it all before. It’d been a deciding factor to move to Victoria, over three thousand kilometres away. She didn’t want to hear his excuses anymore, but go on with life.

Disappointed, she assented. And understood. After all, he’d only stepped off a plane after twenty-four hours two days ago, to see his father for the first time in such a long time. “No worries. I let the boys know. Skye moved away a few years ago.”
His look told her that the name didn’t ring a bell, either.
“You’ve really been hit hard with jetlag.”
He scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry for that.”
“Is there a Mrs. Delaney?” Emily tried to sound as casual as possible, but wasn’t sure whether it’d come across that way. The expression on his face revealed a touch of disbelief.
“You should know better than me. After all, you’ve known Jack longer than me.”
Emily didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I meant you,” she finally replied in a whisper, hoping not to put more salt in what seemed an open wound.
The expression on his face changed to pained, his lips turned downwards. “My surname is Walsh. And no, there’s no Mrs. Walsh.”

Lexie took her cup of tea and sat on the front porch, enjoying the sunset across the ocean. It’d been an exhausting day. What had started as a simple walk through the forest turned out to be an adventure in many aspects. A smile tugged at her lips as she thought about her daughter at the animal shelter. Lexie had followed the park ranger all the way back into Beauty Bay and once they’d arrived at the shelter, he’d involved Zoe in every little step to get the joey settled. She chuckled at how much her girl had fussed. Her daughter’s eyes had lit up when seeing a couple of small kittens, and Lexie was proud of her how she’d handled them, as well as all the other animals she’d been introduced to.
And then there’d been the park ranger. Jesse. He’d been not only a wealth of knowledge, but he’d also been patient with her daughter, explaining, and showing her so many things. She liked him and despite her best intentions of staying away from men, she was looking forward to seeing him again the next day when she was going to drop Zoe off to help with the feeding.
She shook her head at herself, reminding herself that she’d landed in Beauty Bay because of her broken marriage. Her daughter and her job needed all her attention, not some very attractive park ranger.
Jesse.
What was his surname again?

As soon as Jack had told Emily earlier in the week that Connor was coming to Fermosa Bay, her whole body had reacted. She’d laughed at herself for still having a crush on him, but even at the tender age of six years, he’d been the love of her life. They’d spent hours at the beach, searching for shells, building sand castles, or swimming in the sea. The famous five of Fermosa Bay, as they had been called: Emily, Connor, Ethan, Niall, and Skye.
Then there’d been the accident, and she’d never seen Connor again until today.
The simple touch of her hand on his shoulder brought back all the memories and the fun they’d had.
Yet, it seemed they were only memories for her. The fun and mischief were nowhere to be seen in his eyes. Standing in front of her, he seemed distant and withdrawn. The constant grin he’d worn on his face was gone.
She tried hard to put on a smile. “I’m sure the others would love to catch up with you. How about a drink at the pub tomorrow night?”
Connor nodded. “Sure. Just give me a bit longer to settle in.”

I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. Jesse, the Park Ranger, found a dead kangaroo last week, with a little joey still inside – alive.

His mouth edged up when both females let out a big huff as they exited the car and stomped across the car park. There was nothing he could do. Unsure of how long the joey had been without food, he needed to make him his priority. He wrapped the small animal into the blanket again and placed him on the passenger seat before returning to his seat. He was about to close the car door when he heard Zoe.
“Mr Park Ranger,” she shouted from across the car park.
He got out again and strode towards her.
“Sorry to be a pain,” she said. “But we would like to follow you to the shelter if that’s okay.”
Looking past the girl, he saw her mother waiting at the car, but he was unable to interpret the expression on her face. Frustration about a hike gone wrong? Or pride for her daughter for caring so much? He sighed inwardly. It could be as simple as tiredness.
“Of course,” he finally replied. “I make sure I won’t lose you.”
“Thank you so much,” Zoe replied.
“You’re very welcome.”
He looked up at Lexie. A small smile spread across her face as she watched her daughter hopping back to the car. He assumed it was her relief of a day that had gone so bad turning into something good. When she met his gaze, his whole body went on alert and somewhere inside he appreciated the opportunity to spend more time with her.

Jane, Connor’s mother, opposed the idea of him travelling to the other end of the world, but something inside him yearned to find out more about his paternal family. At the same time, it scared the hell out of him.
He crossed one foot over the other and spread his arms wide on the railing. “I’ve taken a year off work.” With a shrug, he added, “I suppose a few months. See how I go.”
Emily stepped closer and when she placed her hand on his shoulder, an unexpected jolt went through him. “Are you all right?”
Wasn’t that the one million dollar question?
No, he wasn’t. Not even close. Several weeks ago, he’d said goodbye to the woman who’d cheated on him and a few days ago, he’d said farewell to his mother and Duncan, the man he’d called father for almost twenty years. Embarking on a flight to the other end of the world, Connor had been determined to find out about the first seven years of his life.
His mouth edged up as he replied, “Of course, I am. Just a bit tired.”

Excerpt:
When Ritter arrived at the gym, he spotted Cole jumping rope. He stopped and glanced at the wall clock. “You’re late. Roommate didn’t have you tied up, did she?”
“Very funny. We got a dog. Stayed up playing with him. I hit the snooze one time too many.”
Cole ran a towel over his face, then his lips curled. “That’s not good.”
“What? Getting a puppy?”
“Naw. The we in that sentence sounds like a contract extension.”
Ritter stretched. “I won’t lie. I’ve gone home to an empty house so long, thought having someone there would drive me nuts, but it hasn’t—for the most part.”
Cole stepped on the nearest treadmill, turned it on, and ran a steady pace. “I gotta hand it to you. You’ve managed to sleep with her and keep your hands to yourself. Or have you?”
Ritter climbed onto the machine next to Cole’s and matched his stride. No need to confess he hadn’t exactly resisted, but he’d not passed second base—by much. Had it not been for the phone call, he would have hit a home run. He’d had the wood for it. “No.”
“Come on. No way you haven’t hit that. Especially after what you told me about her coming on to you.”
“That’s why I can’t let her stay. My resistance is wearing thin.”
Ritter and Cole’s phones sounded a text at the same time. Ritter read his, then shot Cole a look. “Turns out, we’re off this afternoon.”
Cole dropped his cell back into the cupholder. “I’ve never been to New Jersey. You?”
“Nope but looks like the storm is calling us there.”

When he’d received Jack’s phone call, telling him he was his father, Connor had thrown words at him he’d immediately regretted before hanging up without listening to anything Jack had to say. Thank God, Jack had been persistent and called again the next day. Consumed with curiosity, he listened for half an hour, making notes. Jack had provided him with all the details, date of birth, name, and even provided him with a copy of his birth certificate and a few photos via email afterwards.
Three hours later, his mother had confirmed Jack’s claim to be his father. It’d been a tumultuous few weeks. They’d talked a couple of times on the phone, and finally Jack had told him about his terminal cancer and the real reason for finding him: he had invited Connor to Fermosa Bay to spend some time with him.
