I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. Jesse, the Park Ranger, found a dead kangaroo last week, with a little joey still inside – alive.

Jesse blew out a long breath as he rubbed his hands over his face. It wasn’t the first time the he found a dead kangaroo with the joey still alive, but that didn’t make it any easier. He kneeled and inspected both mama and child. The little joey was looking good considering the situation. Letting out another sigh, he stood and returned to the car where he opened the door on Zoe’s side.“I was hoping Zoe would be able to help me.”
Both, Lexie and her daughter, stared at him. “How?” Lexie asked with some suspicion his her voice.
He nodded, knowing he should’ve explained himself more. “The kangaroo is dead, but there’s a little joey still alive inside the pouch.” Their faces relaxed and something like sympathy took over. “If Zoe could sit at the front with a few blankets and hold on to the little fella until we get to your car.”
The girl’s eyes beamed as she nodded while unbuckling at the same time. He’d known the favour would be an icebreaker with the young girl, or at least he’d hoped so.
“Will that be okay?” he asked Lexie.
“Of course,” she replied with a smile.
He wasn’t able to move aside fast enough for Zoe to swap to the front. With a chuckle, he stepped to the back of the car, opened the boot, and retrieved a few blankets which he gave to Zoe. Then he returned to the joey and carefully took him out of the pouch before placing him into the blankets on the girl’s lap.
“Keep him nice and warm,” he explained. “Joeys need lots of warmth.”
She nodded eagerly as she carefully wrapped the little animal into the blankets. “He’s so tiny. Will he be okay?”
“We’ll take him to the animal shelter and they’ll look after him. He looks in good shape, I’d say his chances are better than average.”
Lexie moved to the middle of the back seat and leaned in. “Are we allowed to touch him?”
Amused by the two hovering over the joey, he nodded. “I’ll be two minutes. Just have to move the mama a little further off the road.”
“Take your time,” Lexie replied without looking at him, her full attention on the little survivor.

Jesse helped Lexie and her daughter into the car and then slid behind the steering wheel. While he started the engine, he considered to start a conversation, but decided against it. Nothing personal, but it’d been a busy day and he was too tired to come up with anything to say. So they drove quietly along the forest road. It didn’t take him long before he located the dead kangaroo further up the path. Shaking his head, he knew straight away that it was a hit and run incident, with the driver leaving without moving the animal. He slowed and parked in front of it.
“I’ll be a couple of minutes,” he explained, looking at Lexie via the mirror.
With a slow nod, she asked, “Is it dead?”
He swivelled in his seat to face her. “Put it this way. I hope it is, otherwise I might have to put it down.”
The expression on her face told him that she wasn’t fond of the idea either. Neither was he. In one quick movement, he turned, opened the door, and got out. It took him only a few steps to get to the kangaroo. The animal was dead all right, but when he stood right next to it, he looked right into his next problem.
The little joey inside was still alive.

“Other woman, hell,” Dru groused. “The assistant was some young stud from Tommy’s gym with abs to die for.”
With that. she side-stepped him and reached for the knob on the bathroom door.
Fast on his feet, Rory’s counter move brought them nose to nose. “Play much poker, Horvath?”

Lisa stood on her toes to reach Oscar’s lips. Muscle memory clicked in, remembering what the others lips felt like, how perfectly their mouths fit together, the line of their bodies melding. The sanctuary of Saint Albert in Germantown was abuzz as Ed Penn entered the church alone. Rather than walking down the aisle like he would have if his daughter, Lisa was on his arm, he scooted over to the side aisle and briskly marched up, his wife with a look of terror on her face, having risen out of the pew to see what the delay was. Ed nodded to her to join him, and she did so, hyperventilating, knowing it wasn’t going to be good. The groom, Louie Blakemore, stepped down from his place at the altar to meet them, confusion replaced by knowledge leading to a broken heart. Lisa had apparently stood him up.
“Do you want me to say something?” Ed asked.
“Say what? What happened?” Louie asked. “I just talked to her an hour ago.”
Deciding to rip the bandage off the wound in one fell swoop, Ed chose to tell the truth.
“She’s still in love with Oscar,” he said. Martha gasped, breaking down in tears. “She’s left with him.”
“You can’t tell this crowd,” she cried. “It’ll be a mob scene out of Frankenstein without the torches and pitchforks.”
“I’m leaving,” Louie said, pale. “Tell them whatever you want.”
He ran out of the side door, leaving the job to Ed. Louie’s mother and father followed him out of the building, first telling Ed the reception would go on, to please let the crowd know.
“Come with me, Mother,” he said gently, offering Martha his arm, knowing what this was costing her.
Holding her head up was so hard as the tears came. She wanted to run out the side door and go home to bed. They climbed the steps to the pulpit together. The priest offered the microphone.
“Stop that infernal playing,” Martha cried to the organist and the music abruptly stopped, the last notes echoing throughout the vast space.

Her laugh was genuine and beautiful. “Well, you know, Niall showed me his secret spot at the beach.”
“Niall?”
“I can’t believe you don’t remember Niall.”
“He can’t even bloody remember Ethan,” Jack growled.

Suddenly the humorous expression on her face changed, but he couldn’t figure out what she was thinking. It bugged him that he wasn’t able to remember anything from his childhood here in Australia, but it annoyed him even more to see the disbelief in these two. She stared at him for a long moment. Although he wasn’t coy when it came to women, it made him uncomfortable, and he turned to look out across the ocean again. There was a big container ship on the horizon, moving along at snail’s pace. It was barely visible in the distant, despite being near the coast. Closing his eyes, he compared himself to a ship in the ocean, so close to everyone, yet out of everyone’s reach as he once again wondered what had happened. Or why he was here, at the other end of the world, twenty-four flight hours away, about nine time zones ahead of his family back in England.
His father’s and Emily’s voices were distant as Connor tried his hardest to remember anything about this place. Remember somebody called Ethan or Niall.
But he came up with nothing. Zilch.
Not even the mention of a kiss triggered any memories.

Jesse Parker dragged his hand through his hair. There had been so many things wrong with the situation in front of him. The fact that the young girl had stopped him in the middle of nowhere didn’t sit well with him, but on the flipside, he was glad she had, because organising a search party wouldn’t have been on his favourite things to do for a Friday afternoon either. God knows if anybody had noticed that they’d been gone for a while, considering they were new in town. He made a mental note to ask Melody about the two. She’d given them the directions to the Cook Waterfall carpark, he was sure she’d know a little more about them.
And then there was the mother, who despite the shortage of breath and the obvious lack of fitness did something to him, he wasn’t sure how to handle or even interpret.The mother. He didn’t even know her name.
Holding out his hand, he said, “Jesse Parker. Nice meeting you.”
She looked up at him and a slow smile spread across her face, but she ignored his hand. “Nice meeting you, too. More than nice, if I may say so. I’m Lexie and this is my daughter Zoe.”
Sliding his hand into his pants pocket, he turned to look at Zoe. “I’m not lecturing you, but please promise me not making a habit out of stopping strange cars.”
The girl nodded enthusiastically. “Promise.”
“Okay. Let’s get this roadkill off the road and then get you back to your car.”

“I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.”

“Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Connor was struck by the intensity of his father’s words. I have Connor here. It was the way they were spoken, and the emotions behind them that confused him. Was there a bit of belonging or appreciation? Or did Connor read something into it when there wasn’t anything?
He watched Emily taking off the blanket. She waited patiently as Jack had another bout of coughing fits.
“Jack, did you take your medication this morning?” she asked.
He waved her off with his hand. “Nah, I’m sick of them. They’re making me drowsy and nauseous.”
“They help—”
“They don’t help,” Jack interrupted. “They delay the obvious. I wanna have a clear mind when I discuss matters with Connor.”
“You shouldn’t skip on the medication,” she persisted. “They help—”
“She’s not only as pretty as her mother, but just as stubborn,” Jack said with a grin.
Connor noticed his father’s long sigh. It seemed even talking was an effort for him nowadays. There were so many questions about the illness, but also the medication he was obviously refusing.
“He’s even taken on the pommy accent. My own son has a pommy accent,” Jack told Emily as she checked his temperature.
She turned to look at Connor and gave him a smile. “I suppose it’s been a while since you moved to England.”
“He was seven.”
Emily placed her hand on her chest and with exaggeration replied, “Oh, I remember. I was heartbroken for days.”
Connor cocked a brow. “Days?”
