Today’s hook

He placed his arm around her and drew her in a bit closer. “Have you talked to Soph about your teacher?”
She nodded. “Yes. Her reply was that for most fourteen-year-old girls teachers seem like dragons. She still remembers her science teacher who gave her a hard time.” She paused for a moment. “She blames it on my hormones because she thinks,” Mia snorted and then continued with an exaggerated voice, “Miss Peterson is a really nice person.”
He chuckled, which earned him a momentary glare from Mia.
With a shrug of his left shoulder, he commented, “I s’pose she has a point.”
Rolling her eyes, she moved away from him again. “Too hot for sentiments like that.”
A smile tugged at his lips. She had come a long way from when he had first met her. That’d been six years earlier, and she’d been only eight. Eight years old with already enough character for three teenagers combined. But he’d liked her from the moment he’d met her. He had been helping the girls find some stuff in their attic when he had mistaken her for Sophie’s daughter. With hands on hips, she’d said to him, “Do I look like her daughter? I mean, seriously.”

BLURB:
Zach Taylor, an escort in Sydney, living in Hobart, enlists the help of Natasha Peterson when his teenage friend, Mia, runs away. He soon finds out that the ‘dragon’ is really more of a kitten. And although Natasha, Mia’s teacher, is attracted to him as well, she has her own problems to deal with, not to mention her initial reaction to Zach’s occupation.

Will Zach’s job keep him from a chance to be with Natasha?

Life is good for teenager Mia Levesque. But when Darren Schuster shows up in Hobart, she knows something is up once Sophie and Mark cut their weekend away short and rush home in the middle of the night. When Sophie won’t answer Mia’s questions, emotions run high, and Zach confirms Darren’s identity to Mia. Disappointed, angry, and feeling alone, Mia runs away.

Will life settle back into a routine for Mia once she finds out about the stranger in her life?

♥♦♥  EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.
With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”
The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.
Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”
She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”
Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”
Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”
Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again. A couple of weeks later, Addison has her first day at work, as a primary school teacher.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

She followed Jax, the Grade 6 teacher, and Mary, the Prep teacher, out of the staff room and along the hall to attend the first day assembly. The noise of the excited children made her smile and excitement filled her as well. Addison went into her classroom filled with twenty-something little children, dressed in the uniform of green, forty-something eyes staring at her in anticipation.

She sighed deeply and knelt in front of the children. “Okay, my little ducklings. I know you’re all excited, and actually so am I, but I’m hoping you’ll be on your best behaviour.” She took the hand of the girl at the very front. “Hello pumpkin. Can you show me the way to the assembly hall?”

Nodding her small head, the girl said eagerly, “Yes, Miss—”

Addison winked at the little girl. “My name is Miss Ryker.”

“Yes, Miss Ryker.”

“Let’s go pumpkin. We’ll be right behind you.”

Addison followed her little herd of children into the assembly hall and watched them as they gave little hand waves to parents and some grandparents. One of the boys high-fived a man and as she looked up, her heart almost skipped a beat.

It was the dad with no name from the Christmas concert.

An Impressive Swan Song? #Excerpt “Find Just You and Me” #boxedset featuring “Raving Beauty” by @VickiBatman

An Impressive Swan Song? Maybe no. Maybe yes.

A very long time ago when a single gal, I walked out of Handsome’s apartment, across a green space to his car. Little did I know, lurking in the grass was a deadly weapon. What, VB? A deadly weapon??!!!
Yes. But not quite like what you’re thinking. Hidden in the grass was a hole and as we strolled and talked while approaching his car, my right foot slid in the hole and I fell, hearing my ankle (yep, the one I damaged in high school) go pop-pop-pop.

I was aghast. The last thing I wanted was to fall and cry and hurt in front of a new guy I was dating.

Handsome was—and still is—a gentleman and helped me out of the hole. (It was deep enough to hold a small tree.) Well aware of what was going on with my ankle, I limped with his support to his car. He wanted to go to the ER, but I dissuaded him, saying I knew what to do—ice, pain reliever, prop foot on a pillow. I reclined in the seat and wham! I passed out.

Wasn’t I impressive?

LOL. Confession time—I put a similar incident in my romantic comedy short story, “Raving Beauty.” Here’s a fun snippet:

Using the skills I’d honed as an erstwhile fashion model in the golden days of college, I crossed the stage toward the podium, paused with hands on my hips. When the applause had died, I pivoted to move center stage. As my heel caught another divot, grace abandoned me. With a pop-pop-pop, my ankle bowed cockeye, and this time, my worst nightmare came true. I tumbled over the edge of the stage.

Landing flat on my flipside, I blinked vacantly at the acoustical tile ceiling. Somewhere in my stupor, I heard a chorus of gasps, a pounding of feet, and someone hurdling over the rows of chairs, launching to my side. A hand swept along my face and down my arm, pausing intermittently to compress. I fluttered my eyes once. Twice. When able to focus a third time, I stared into the grass-green irises of Ben Stewart.

“Don’t move, Kelly,” he ordered. “Are you hurt anywhere?”

Please, let me evaporate. And die.

Have you ever done an unintentional swan song to impress a date?

DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward to introduce Addison – the main female character. My apologies that the snippet is a bit longer today, but I wanted to have that last sentence included.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

The expression on her father’s face told her he wasn’t convinced, but he let it go.
The chapter Ryan was in the past. It was a closed book, placed into the very back corner of her shelf so it was easily forgotten.
“I hope he was reprimanded as well.”
“You have to have the last word, don’t you, Harold,” her mother said. “Addy’s moved on, so should you.”
He mumbled some more words, which made Addison smile. Ever the protective father.
She gazed across the ocean again, listening to the constant roar of the surf — her thoughts wandering off again to the school concert a few weeks earlier.
And the dad without a name.

About the Author:

Candi Fox, co-host of the wildly popular radio show Candi and Company with over 900 thousand listeners began her venture in the paranormal at the tender age of two, when she witnessed her first apparition. From that moment on the paranormal seemed to follow her. No matter where she moved, the house she lived in the house next door, or the house down the street always seemed to be haunted.

She often wondered if she drew the spirits to her. Little did she know that she was indeed a magnet of sorts. It wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she found people who could not only explain her gifts, but would also help her hone them. Armed with this new knowledge she began to openly explore hauntings and other paranormal phenomena.

Growing up in Indiana lent her the opportunity to explore many famous haunted places including the Hannah House, which was once part of the Underground Railroad. A little over two years ago she moved to Tulsa, OK and has began to explore the haunted landscape in a new state.

Candi lives with her husband, and furry children in Tulsa. She is passionate about the occult, saving and rehabilitating horses, horseback riding, magic, all things mystical and has her Reiki Mastery.

She uses her own paranormal experiences as well as her own life traumas to write from a grounded and realistic perspective about subjects that are hard to talk about and even harder to feel for yourself.
