I started this story a few weeks ago and I hope you’re enjoying it so far. I’m not sure where it’s heading, so any comments / critique is more than welcomed. I moved a little forward, back into Jesse’s POV – having a beer with his friends, Noah and Harrison.

Enjoy ♥

Jesse stared at the beer in his hand and barely listened to his friend’s story. His mind was still reeling from the events during the day. Meeting the mother and daughter, but also finding another dead roo on the road, with a small joey inside her still alive. He would never get used to the sight, even after five years in the job. Road accidents happened, he knew that, but he wished people would care and move the roo or call it in straight away.
“Earth to Jesse.”
His friend’s voice hauled him back to the present. “Sorry, mate.”
“What’s up, Jesse?” his friend, Harrison, asked. “Noah’s joke was actually quite funny for a change and you didn’t even move. Trouble at work?”
Jesse looked from one friend to the other. Halfbrothers, who’d been separated for most of their lives. He enjoyed the occasional night out, but tonight didn’t feel right.
“Sorry, Noah. My mind’s somewhere else.”
“Somewhere or with someone?” Harrison asked.
Jesse cocked a brow.
“Mate, this is Beauty Bay. People talk. Everyone knows about the girl who helped you with the joey today. Word is, you were exceptionally nice to her.”
“Geez, Harrison, will you shut up. You make me sound like a paedophile. Her name is Zoe. She’s only moved her recently with her mother after her parents’ divorce.”
“Zoe Kendricks?”
Jesse’s raised his eyebrows. “You know her?”
“Her mother works with us. Yeah, I know her. Cute little thing. Taking her parents’ separation hard.”
With a nod, Jesse replied, “That’s the feeling I got. Caring for the joey did her good it seemed. So I told her as much as possible about it.”
“How did you meet her in the first place? Don’t get me wrong, I like Lexie. She’s a great addition to the team, but—”
“Oh, I know who you’re talking about,” Noah interrupted him. “Dad says, great knowledge, but lacking people’s skills.”
Jesse choked back a snort. Yes, that was the impression he got as well.
