#MFRWHooks “The police was here asking about Hudson.” #Romance #Mustread #reading #NZ

The whistling kettle drew her back from her thoughts, and she filled her cup. Dipping the teabag in and out of the water, she recalled her conversation with Steve earlier in the day when he’d finally returned her call.
“What’s up, Tiff? I’ve got about three missed calls here,” he had asked, not giving her a chance to even say hello.
Just hearing his voice sent a jolt of relief through her, almost catching her breath. After all, most of her problems weren’t half as bad once Steve was there to help. Despite him being her brother Liam’s best friend, Steve and Tiffany had become close during the year Liam had gone to London for a gap year.
“Why haven’t you ever told me about Mat?” Stunned by her own question, she slapped her forehead a few times wondering where the question had come from — especially as matters more important were on hand.
There was a quiet chuckle on the other end of the line, and she was momentarily struck by a bout of embarrassment.
“Your problem can’t be too bad,” Steve replied with a hint of sarcasm.
Ignoring his comment, she said, “The police was here asking about Hudson.”
Silence hung in the air before he replied, “Shit. No wonder I’ve had so many missed calls.”
“Not to mention the amount of time I tried to get hold of you on your landline. So who the hell is this guy, and why did he answer your phone?”
“First things first, tell me about the police.”
Tiffany headed into the lounge room and sat on the couch. “As I said already, they turned up here this morning wanting to know about Hudson.”
“Why?”

I return to my story I started a little while ago. Today’s snippet is back in Jesse’s POV.

Enjoy ♥

He apologised as soon as he figured the reason for her silence. “How bad?”
“Mario is great with her. Motivating her and giving her a lot of encouragement. You shouldn’t blame him, but be grateful for his efforts.”
Exhaling a long breath, he pinched the bridge of his nose. He’d come to appreciate Karen’s subtle ways of telling him off and putting him back into line. “I’m sorry.”
“I know it’s hard for you to let go and trust him, but you should.”
“And I do, but I’d appreciate if you could tell me how Dana is.”
“She’s strained her wrist. They’re keeping her in hospital overnight, because it shook her up a little and they were worried about her blood pressure.”
“Shit. Which hospital?”
“She’s in good hands.”
“Which hospital?”
She was quiet again for a long moment.
“Karen, I’ll find out one way or another. There’s no way my sister is in hospital and I’m not coming to see her.”
“Okay. I’ll let the nurses know.”
As he rushed through the house to get his jacket and his car keys, he listened to the details of which hospital Dana was in, which floor, and room number. She even gave him the name of a nurse who looked after his sister.
“Are you there?”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“This is not a fucking strain. There’s something you’re not telling me.”
“Your sister is fine,” she repeated. “I’ll see you in an hour or so.”
Then she disconnected the call.

#MFRWHooks “She’d enjoyed the brief conversation.” #Romance #Mustread #reading #NZ

Tiffany walked down the floating wooden staircase, which reached up to her half-floor loft bedroom, and into the kitchen for a drink. Water gushed from the faucet as she filled the kettle and then switched it on.
Her mind returned to the conversation with Steve’s friend, Mat. She’d enjoyed the brief, although bizarre, conversation. His voice had been so happy and full of energy it had taken her mind off her problem within only a few minutes. Something she hadn’t been able to achieve with the bath she had taken later that morning. The whole hysteria from the previous year had crept up, leaving her anxious, tense, and with a headache. A nice cup of tea would hopefully do the trick. She thought of Mat’s laugh and her mouth curled in response. It was deep and hearty. One of those laughs that could be contagious to anyone who heard it. Just thinking about it brought a smile to her lips. Closing her eyes, she tried to remember whether Steve had ever mentioned Mat’s name, but as much as she tried, she wasn’t able to recall ever hearing about a friend from New Zealand.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Quinn stood outside her loft, wishing that she’d been smart enough to meet this guy at the restaurant, if that’s what you could call it. It had barely been a step up from fast food. Now he stood in front of her, still talking about himself, when all she wanted to do was curl up on the couch with a good book. This is what she got for picking a guy based on his online profile. Next time she’d make sure she had at least a phone conversation before making a date.

Jeff suddenly stopped his rambling and asked, “So, I think we really hit it off tonight, right?”

She stared blankly at him. Lying had never come easy to her. “I had a pretty good time.”

He stroked her arm, and she locked her knees to stop herself from pulling away. He wasn’t a bad guy. He didn’t give her the creeps. Jeff was even kind of good-looking: tall with dark hair and brown eyes, a little on the skinny side. But something turned her completely off.

When his hand stopped stroking her arm and his fingers interlocked with hers, the sweatiness of his palm was apparent. Eww. How was she supposed to disengage without seeming like a bitch?

“I’d like to see you again.”

“Maybe. Why don’t you send me an e-mail and we can set something up?”

“Can I have your number?”

She shifted slightly to the left, nearer to the door. “I don’t like to give out my number to too many people. This was just our first date and all.”

“But definitely not our last.” He leaned in to kiss her.

She saw it coming, thought she’d get a little peck on the cheek, but his mouth crashed into hers. When she didn’t immediately open her lips, his tongue poked and prodded. It was slimy and gross. When she tried to step back, he pulled her closer. The quick move startled her and in her shock, she inadvertently opened her mouth.

That was one hell of a mistake. He jabbed his tongue so far into her mouth, it was like he wanted to inspect her molars. And he was a sloppy kisser too. Saliva everywhere.

Her stomach started to churn just as he pulled away. “How about we take this upstairs?”

Not in this lifetime. “I don’t sleep with guys on the first date.”

“There’s a lot of territory between a kiss at the door and sleeping together.” He waggled his eyebrows at her.

Like she wanted to dry-hump that? “No, thanks. I should be getting in. It’s late and I have work tomorrow.”

“Oh, okay.” He really sounded disappointed. “Maybe we can get together this weekend.”

She slid toward the door, hoping he’d get the hint and not try to swoop in for another kiss. “I’ll be pretty busy this weekend. End of the school year stuff. But send me an e-mail. Good night.”

She didn’t wait for him to respond. She practically ran for the door. After scrubbing her mouth twice and then throwing her toothbrush in the trash, she called Indy. She plopped on the couch and put her feet up on the table. While Indy’s phone rang, she stared at the green nail polish on her toes. What a waste of a perfectly good pedicure.

I return to my story I started a few weeks back. This is Lexie’s POV again.

Enjoy ♥

A smile tugged on Lexie’s lips. “I’m glad you do. I think we’re going to have a really good time here.”
When her daughter didn’t reply, Lexie turned and looked at her.
“Mum?”
“Yes, honey?”
“Do you think we could invite Ranger Jesse for dinner one night?”
The last bite of Lexie’s sandwich suddenly stuck in her throat and she coughed. Jesse in her small house. How would she cope?

♦ ♦ ♦

It’d been a busy day for Jesse and it was late when he finally sat down on his porch with his dinner and a beer. All he wanted was to head to bed, but if his night was going to be anything like the previous one, he’d get little sleep again. The culprit for his sleepless night was one very sexy, shy, mother of one very cute daughter. It took him so much effort not to stare at her all morning as she fed the small kitten. He’d been grateful for the call out. At least it made sense to him now that she had refused his hand when they had initially met. He remembered an old school friend having some sort of skin condition. The poor guy was never allowed to come out for a play in case the skin would break. Jesse pondered about all that for a long while as he watched the ship on the horizon go past. Would that be the reason for Lexie’s lack of people’s skill? A simple rash?
The buzzing of the phone hauled him back from the reverie. Despite having the urge to ignore it, as soon as he saw the name of his sister’s carer, he answered immediately.
“Jesse speaking.”
“Hi, it’s Karen here. Sorry for calling so late.”
“No problems at all. What’s up? Is Dana okay?”
“She’s okay.” Karen hesitated and Jesse sensed that the opposite was most likely the case, but he waited until she continued. “She had a fall this afternoon when Mario took her to the beach.”
“Fucking hell. He should’ve known better.”
Karen was silent

About J. BENGTSSON

A professional stay-at-home-mom for twenty-one years, Jill started her writing career in 2016 after reading a really bad rockstar romance. Although she had no previous writing experience and no desire to become an author, Jill was convinced she could write a better story.

And so began Cake: A Love Story. She wrote the novel for fun and added every single thing she’d ever wanted to read in a romance. Embarrassed by her newfound hobby, Jill kept her writing a secret from her family.

When the story was complete, she turned to Amazon to get the feedback she desired. Not thinking the book would ever sell, Jill planned to pull Cake off Amazon once it got a review or two but that never happened because, within a week of its release, Cake began to soar up the bestseller charts. Not only was Jill shocked by Cake’s success but now she had a whole new burgeoning career on her hands…and some explaining to do. Needless to say, the news of Jill’s secret book bay came as a complete shock to her husband and three children.

Jill is now a full-time writer.
