“Wouldn’t say,” he said with a lift of his shoulder in a quick shrug.

“What do you mean he wouldn’t say?” Tyson shot him a glare. “You have the rings, right?”

Markus nodded.

He’d known Tyson and Oliver for most of his life, since before school. They’d played footy each Saturday and later, during their teenage years, hung out together afterwards as well. Yet, after watching a game of soccer, Markus changed sports. Oliver had switched to baseball a year later, after spending a few months in the States. The youngest of the trio, however, had stayed with football and was one of the most regarded players in the Australian Football League. Despite going their different ways in sports, their friendship had remained as strong as the early years and nowadays they caught up as often as possible to watch a game of cricket or motor racing.

Oliver rushed into the room. “Sorry for that.”

“You will be. Trust me, I’ll think of something to muck up your wedding day, too.”

He sat as he watched Tyson pacing up and down the small room. He’d known his friend for over twenty years, and Ty’s eye twitch was enough proof that he was nervous. Markus couldn’t remember seeing Ty so tense in…well, ever. Not even before any of his important football games. Then again, it wasn’t every day that one married a gorgeous girl. And despite Katie’s best efforts to keep it a low-key event, the media was already present outside the church.

Grabbing his phone, Markus flicked through a few names and dialled Oliver’s number. “Where are you?” he asked when his friend answered the call.

“Give me five minutes.”

Markus raised his brows. “The groom’s having a hard time settling his nerves.”

Oliver let out a bark of laughter. “It’s his wedding day. Yeah, I’d be a little restless too. Do you have the rings? Katie will kill you, if you don’t.”

Although sure he did, panic rose within Markus as he rummaged through his pockets to retrieve the small box. “Yes, all good.”

“Okay,” Oliver replied. “See you in five.”

He hung up and gave Tyson, who was still pacing, a reassuring smile.

“Where the hell is he?”

Staring, Markus DeLeon stood in front of Tyson. The guy definitely knew how to make a tuxedo look good. Markus’ mouth curved into a smile, though, when he saw Ty’s hair.

He cocked a questioning brow. “The hair?”

Tyson instantly raked his hand through it to mess it up a bit. “Grandma Hazel,” he griped through gritted teeth.

Markus wasn’t able to hold back a grin. “Did I just see an eye twitch?”

“Oh man, give me a break here, okay?” Tyson shot him a glare. “And where the hell is Oliver?”

Markus tried his best not to laugh, but failed miserably. He looked around the small room in the back of the church. It was furnished with only two bookcases, a desk with a chair, and a small sofa.

“Hello?”

“Jared?”

Standing straight, he squinted outside the window. “Mia? What the—”

“I need to make this quick because I have no idea what this call will cost me.”

A thousand thoughts ran through Jared’s mind. Accidents. Deaths. Chaos. His business.

A hiccupping sob at the end of the other end echoed through the line, and Jared needed to sit down. Needed to have something to hold on to as well as he prepared himself for the news.

“What’s wrong, mate?”

Another sob. “Josh and I… I… we—”

He waited her out, although it was on the tip of his tongue to scream at her to just spit out the information.

“We had a fight,” she said dramatically.

This week’s Hook …

Jared’s day in Las Vegas was more or less uneventful. After breakfast and half an hour to get acquainted with the motorhome a little more, he strolled down the streets of Sin City. The place didn’t overly excite him, but he took in the bright colours and the constant stream of people moving past him. It was a vibrant atmosphere. Bigger and shinier was the motto, it seemed. The hotels were extravagant and the shops were a mix of touristy things or expensive brand articles. Occasionally, he stopped to watch the world go by and, although he would’ve never admitted it, at some stage he was seriously lost in one of the big casinos. There wasn’t much else for him to see in this town so he decided to move on the next day.

One lesson learnt. Hobart’s number of tourists was nothing compared to Las Vegas which made him chuckle at his own naïve knowledge of the world.

Jared returned to the motorhome very late that afternoon. While getting his dinner organised, a vibration in his pocket alerted him to a phone call. With his brows raised in surprise, he retrieved his phone to check the incoming call. He usually had the phone switched on, but only to get a hang of the time difference and to check the time. The old wristwatch had landed in the drawer years ago becoming too inconvenient to wear while working outside. He looked at the number.

Yes, she had lost. She had lost her dream to make something out of her life. The dream of a wonderful husband, a house full of children, a house with a small backyard, and a life of happiness. She’d been sick of her mom’s constant struggle to find work and sick of the lack of money — only to find herself in the same situation. This was a bad dream and before it was turning into a nightmare, she had to get out.

On her own.

Ivy leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. “Bye, Dylan.”

Then she turned, walked out of the trailer, and away from what was supposed to be her dream. She didn’t look back, and she ignored his calls while cursing the lack of a car. She heaved a sigh. The car was another issue. She’d been trying to save for something decent for years, but he’d even found that little stash of money. But she was sure she’d find a ride somewhere. Or use her bit of money for a bus ticket to … somewhere.

Yet, it was only a few yards down the road before the first tears fell on her cheeks. She had no regrets, but a lot of fear. Fear of what lay ahead.

Letting out a big breath, she stood again and continued packing. “Yes, bigger things. A humble house with a small backyard. With flowers of all colours. Planting my own vegetables. Children to love and hug.” She turned and pointed at the tiny bathroom. “Something bigger than this little box.”

He lifted his shoulder in a shrug. “I’ll come with.”

“No, Dylan. This is going to be my journey.”

When he placed his hand on her arm, she slowly met his gaze.

“Honey, we can work on this.”

She exhaled another long breath. “We’ve been working on this for three years now, Dylan. It’s time to concede defeat.”

Concede defeat. She shivered at the phrase. Defeat meant battle. Had her relationship with Dylan been a battle? Was there a winner or a loser?

Ivy pressed her lips together before she replied, “Not this time, Dylan. There’s always an excuse for your drinking. Your father’s death. Your broken leg. The police taking your bike—”

“Hey, that was truly unfair,” he interrupted.

“And now your job. I want more of this life other than this trailer and surviving from week to week.”

He raked his hand through his hair. “Okay, honey. We can do that.”

“No!” She reached for her bag and began throwing her few belongings in it. “I can do it, but on my own.”

With heavy shoulders, she sat on the edge of the bed. “I need to do it,” she whispered. “I owe it to myself to find out whether I was meant for bigger things.”

At some point in her life, things had gone bad. She’d been raised by her mom, who had worked hard to make ends meet every day. Leaving her at the age of only twenty-two, Ivy had been in search for more in her life. More than working all day only to wake up the next morning to do it all over again—and not getting anywhere. Her mother had always said that much of life simply happened and was out of their control.

Ivy Bennett stormed into the back of the trailer. She’d had enough. More than enough. For the last five years, she’d lived in this small, forsaken place outside Las Vegas, surviving on the edge of existence. Her job as a waitress at the local bar paid well, but it was hard-earned money, and she was sick of her boyfriend drinking away almost every penny.

“What are you doing, Ivy?”

Her eyes narrowed furiously. “I’m leaving, Dylan. I need more than this.” She waved her hand around the inside of the trailer. To her, it wasn’t a home. It was a very long room with a double bed at one end, a small kitchen at the other, and a sitting area and bathroom in between. “I deserve more than this,” she added with emphasis.

“Honey,” Dylan said gently as he reached out for her. “Let’s talk about this.” With a hardly noticeable move, he chucked the can of beer in the bin. “I’m having a bit of a low, but I need you to get through this.”
