As she shook her head, her curly red hair bounced around her face. Her green eyes were gleaming with good humour.
“Sorry, Emily. I’m—” He had no idea what he was. Speechless. Frustrated. Memory gone. Probably all of the above. “I’m still jetlagged. Apologies. Come on in.”
Emily walked past him, down the hall, and towards the stairs.
“Look, Emily. In regard to the…ehrm, the jetlag, want to give me a hint what you’re doing here?”
She spun around, her mouth curving into a smile again. “I’m your dad’s nurse.”
Giving a slow nod, he said, “Right. That makes sense.” He held her gaze, absolutely mesmerised by her. It appeared he’d had good taste already as a child. He definitely had to find out about that kiss.
“Right,” he said again. “Jack’s outside on the deck.”
She looked up at him in surprise. The good-humoured face had lost its smile. “Jack?” she asked.
Connor raised his brows. “My dad?”
She gave a slow nod. “Yes, he is,” she replied slowly. “Anyway, the deck’s perfect. He needs a bit of Vitamin D. It’ll do him good.”
Watching her behind, he followed her outside. The storm was closing in, and Emily shaded her eyes with her hand as she looked into the distance across the ocean.
“Emily,” Jack greeted her, and Connor could’ve sworn he caught a slight smile on his father’s face.
She turned to him. “How are you, Jack?”
The old man took her hand. “I have Connor here.”
Connor was struck by the intensity of his father’s words. I have Connor here.

Finally, their eyes locked, and his father’s confusion took Connor aback.
“Son, what are you talking about?”
Their conversation was interrupted, though, by the ringing of the doorbell. Connor cursed inwardly, knowing he had to wait for his father’s response that little bit longer. So many questions about his past, a past he knew nothing about. He stepped back into the house and walked to the front door, making a mental note to ask his mother about Ethan. And how the hell had he liked surfing as a kid when he wouldn’t go near the water now?
Still in thought, he opened the door and was taken off-guard for a moment by what he saw. In front of him stood a beautiful woman with a smile that had an effect on him right to his toes and back up his legs, pooling heat in his groin.
She held her hand out. “Hi, Connor. You don’t look anything like you did twenty years ago.”
He blinked away his confusion, slowly taking her hand. “Thanks. And you are?”
“I’m offended,” she replied with a soft laugh. “I’m Emily Bradshaw.” With an exaggerated sigh, she added, “The man who gave me my first kiss can’t remember me.”

The reaction from his father wasn’t what he expected, though. With his shoulders sagged, Jack closed his eyes. He looked so old and frail. From what Connor saw in all the photos around the house, cancer had taken a lot of life out of his father, leaving behind a haggard body with no energy left. Initially, he’d been taken aback by their similarities in looks, with their dark brown eyes and dark blond hair, including the stubborn curl above the ears, but after all, Jack was his father.
“Ethan was your best friend when you lived here.”
Pain shot through Connor as he was again confronted with a piece of information about his past that he knew nothing about. What had happened all those years ago, that his memory blocked these recollections of his childhood?
“How is your mother?” Jack wanted to know suddenly.
Connor clenched his jaw, trying hard to hold back to frustration and hoping it was a sign of the illness that his father wasn’t able to hold on to one topic anymore. He studied the old man as he listened to his heavy breathing. Jack was thin and pale, with dark circles under his eyes.
“She’s doing well,” he replied after a long moment.
“Married?”
“Yes.”
A smile spread across Jack’s face. “She was beautiful when she lived here. So beautiful.”
Leaning forward to rest his arms on his knees, Connor asked calmly, “Why did you ask her to leave?”

“There’s a front coming, but I think you’d be able to sit outside for a little while. At least until the nurse comes.”
Jack simply nodded.
Connor helped his father out onto the deck, where the old man sat down on his swing seat.
“Thanks, son.”
Without a reply, Connor stepped away and watched the sea again.
“I couldn’t keep you away from the water when you were a child,” Jack said after a long moment.
The words surprised him. “What do you mean?”
When Jack didn’t answer, he turned to look at his father who stared into the distance, a withdrawn expression on his face.
“You were constantly in the water. Whatever opportunity you had, you grabbed your little board and spent most of the day there.”
Now intrigued by the small information about his childhood, Connor asked, “What happened?”
His father shrugged. “You left with your mother.”
Not all that happy with the reply, Connor sat down on the chair next to Jack while letting out a long breath. “Something must’ve happened. I never go near water, let alone go in it.”
Still gazing into the distance, Jack said, “I still have the blue board. Ethan’s little son sometimes uses it nowadays.”
Unsure where the conversation was heading, Connor went along. “Who’s Ethan?” he asked.

Hence, he was surprised to find out that Jack lived in this large house just outside Fermosa Bay, on the top of the cliffs, with a view over the ocean. The house had five rooms and a small study at the back. The lounge room, with a high vaulted ceiling, had wood fire heating and a big window front. Connor had loved the house the instant he’d stepped into it.
He entered the hall, where he found his father. “Good morning, Jack.”
The old man sighed sadly. “You still can’t bring it over your heart to call me Dad?”
Connor’s gaze wandered from his father to all the many framed photos along the wall. Jack was in many of them, but most were of people he didn’t know, except the biggest one, which showed Connor as a child in Jack’s arms. A wave of sadness shook him, but he wasn’t sure what it exactly was. It could’ve been regret that he hadn’t known about his father earlier, or simple sympathy for the man who thought so much of him without knowing anything about him.
And, yet, it wasn’t in him to call him Dad. Or to even think of him as his dad.
After a moment’s silence, he turned to his father and shook his head. “Sorry.”
Jack coughed, and Connor quickly rushed to his side, holding him upright.
“Another bad day?” Connor asked.
“Son, there will be no more good days. One day is like the other, until it will be the last.”
The words struck Connor deep enough to feel some emotions for his father. He knew time was running out, but hearing it made it sound final.

Connor Walsh leaned against the window frame with his arms crossed over his chest as he watched the waves crashing against the rocks. In front of him, as wide as the horizon, was the ocean. With the clouds drifting in from the sea, the sky had turned grey and dark, and he knew there’d be even more rain coming later in the day.

He would’ve enjoyed the scene if it hadn’t reminded him of the changes in his life. He’d been back in Fermosa Bay for two days already, but the memories of the first seven years of his life which he’d spent in this small Australian coastal town were tucked away in the back of his mind. Inaccessible as it seemed. Nowadays, his life was in London and had been for the last twenty-three years. Taking a couple of deep breaths, he looked towards the harbour in the distance, and the small town in the alcove with the hilly forest in the background, where he’d spend some of his childhood years. It was truly one picturesque little place.

A noise from the other end of the house hauled him back from his thoughts, and he stepped away from the window. Since he’d decided to accept Jack’s invitation to come to Australia a few weeks earlier, he’d had visions of what he’d find here. His mother hadn’t told him much about the time she’d lived here, except about Jack owning a pub. Connor had been furious for her lack of memory, but in the end, he’d admitted to himself that it had possibly not been a time she’d like to remember.

Today’s Hook:

And he chuckled some more.
“I’d better go. It was really nice meeting you. And I honestly appreciate you helping me out.”
He turned and locked the doors to the motorhome. Yet, she wasn’t moving.
“Ivy.”
“Hmm?”
Watching her carefully, he said. “Your feet aren’t movin’.”
Her beautiful eyes filled up with tears, and a bit of guilt went through Jared for pushing her. Obviously, her impression of him being a criminal couldn’t have been all that bad, because she wasn’t leaving. Exhaling a big breath, he met her gaze. Nothing was going to plan, so why not?
“Wanna come a little farther?” he asked as he rubbed the back of his neck.
To his surprise, she shook her head. “No.” Drawing in her lips, she stepped back and then said. “Bye, Jared.”
Still carrying some guilt, he watched her walk across the car park and into the distance. “Nice knowing ya,” he said to himself before he turned and headed towards the shopping centre.
Jared’s mind wasn’t on shopping at all. Instead, he replayed the last twelve hours and the few words that had been spoken between him and Ivy. She had been like a closed book, and he still didn’t know why she was running. In fact, she hadn’t said much at all. It had driven him nearly insane how she had nibbled at her sandwich, although her craving for food had been obvious. Yes, he had been attracted to her. But that would’ve been one big disaster. Hooking up with an American girl was not something he needed. Not to mention a runaway at that.
A criminal.
He let out a snort. For all he knew, she could’ve been a con-woman on the run.

BLURB:
Jared Fraser, a landscape business owner in Hobart, Australia, sets out for a holiday to the USA to travel along the Route 66 in a motorhome. Looking forward to his first holiday overseas, he’s excited as he prepares himself for the journey. But little could’ve prepared him for crossing paths with a beautiful hitchhiker.
Will he be able to put his past aside and grab onto happiness?
Ivy Bennett thought leaving her boyfriend would be the hard part. It doesn’t take long to figure out how wrong she was. As she struggles with making a new start in her life, the last person she expects to lead her to happiness is a laid-back Australian on vacation.
But she will have to say goodbye again. And not only to Jared.

Today’s Hook:

Later that afternoon they arrived in Kingman, an old mining town in the middle of nowhere. And, as much as Jared tried to enjoy the view, it wasn’t his kind of scenery. He needed the sight of lush, green bushes or trees. There wasn’t much of either around. Actually, there wasn’t anything around, or so he thought.
They drove into town with Ivy behind the steering wheel. She was indeed a very good driver, who had no trouble steering the big vehicle through the small streets. Before he knew it, they’d stopped in a shopping parking area. It suited him as he needed to stock up on a few items before he hit the road again.
“I suppose that’s it,” she said softly.
He simply nodded. There wasn’t much to say. As much as he enjoyed the little bit of company, she hadn’t been a great talker and was too tense about the whole situation she was in. Whatever the situation was. He’d never asked. It wasn’t any of his business. The bottom line was he wanted to enjoy a nice holiday and not take on somebody else’s problems. Bad enough that he would have an extra passenger in a few days as soon as he made it to Utah.
“Thanks,” she added and held out her hand.
He took the hand and replied, “No worries mate.”
That made her smile. A smile he wouldn’t forget. “Look after yourself and don’t forget to eat, will ya?”
Taking her bag, she said, “The woman who’ll end up with you, will be one very lucky lady.”
He chuckled. “And I had the impression you thought of me as a criminal.”
“No,” she replied, yet her sudden red cheeks betrayed her.

Today’s Hook:

Jared choked back a snort. “I suppose I am in a way, sitting here with a stranger having the weirdest conversation.” He took a bite of his steak burger and then sipped on his drink. “Mia says I’m as boring and laid back as a man can be.”
“Are Mia and you—?”
He nearly spilled the drink as soon as he figured where she was going with this. “Nope. Mia’s around seventeen. Has been happily hooked up with Josh for ages.” About to take another bite, he mumbled, “At least I thought so.”
He’d mentioned earlier that she was only a friend, even though she’d had no reason not to believe him, hearing it a second time, eased her a little. Yet, why it did, she wasn’t sure. She was drawn to him in ways she wasn’t able to begin to understand. Dylan’s image popped into her mind, the man she’d wanted to spend the rest of her life with, yet, even he hadn’t had the charisma the man in front of her seemed to have.
She rolled her eyes at her own idiocy.
They ate in silence for a while, Ivy deep in thought, and in the end eating the fries after all.
His question pulled her out of her reverie. “Ready to show me how to drive?”
Her heart did a little flutter. She was completely taken again by his charm. “Ready as I’ll ever be.”

4 starsThe Romance Review – NEW BEGINNINGS is a very emotional read, one that is heartwarming as well as heart wrenching. It gives you hope in the act of human kindness and that good things do happen to good people. I highly recommend this book.

I’m sharing another snippet from “Journey to Her Dreams”, my second book I wrote and which is now available for FREE for Kindle Unlimited subscribers.

Hollie Anderson, a young woman from Tasmania, lives on a farm outside Launceston, Australia. She has good looks, likes her job, and loves to hang out with her friends. But it’s a recurrent dream that throws her daily life into chaos and takes her on a journey to Ireland.
Sam Shaughnessy enjoys the success as Head of Advertising for a popular magazine in the Irish capital Dublin. Married to Padraic, she thinks she loves her husband, but when she meets Hollie under unusual circumstances, she needs to face the truth, and not just about her marriage.

When both women, so different in many ways, find out they have one thing in common, it changes their lives forever.

Enjoy ♥

“This actually suits me fine,” she finally replied after
admiring herself. “Don’t expect me in the office this afternoon. I’ll
be out for the rest of the day. I’ʹll work on the layouts for the
January edition tomorrow.” She hung up without even waiting for
a response, checked the time, and dialled a number.
“Hello?”
“Claire?” Sam opened her car and threw her bag in the back. “How about some lunch?”
“When?”
“Now.”
“Sam, seriously, someone has to tell you one day that other people actually need to work hard for their money,” Claire replied, but added, “How about I meet you in about half an hour on George Street?”
“Grand. I look forward to it.”
Sam got in her car and drove back into the main streets of Dublin. The cars ahead of her were slow, and she took a deep breath, trying to ignore her obvious dislike of the winter season. Dublin’s streets were still wet from the rain the last few days, and  Sam cursed at the glare off the street from the afternoon sun and the heavier than usual midday traffic. Christmas wasn’t far off, and the shops were doing their best to lure the customers into the main streets for some last-minute shopping—Ireland’s capital was packed. While searching for a parking spot, she noticed how many
Christmas lights had already gone up. The smell of candles and candies were in the air, which put a smile on Sam’s face. She remembered her family Christmases with great fondness. As she crossed the street, she came out of the protection of the building and was brought back to reality by the icy breeze on her face. Sam pulled the collar of her coat a tad higher in a weak attempt to shield herself from the cold air.
Approaching the café, Sam saw Claire was already waiting. When her friend started to shake her head in disbelief after studying Sam’s face, Sam chose to ignore her.
“Don’t tell me,” Claire said with a courteous but patronising voice.
“Okay, I won’t,” Sam said casually as she greeted Claire with a kiss on the cheek.
Claire flashed a look of frustration. “You know exactly what I mean. He did it again, didn’t he?”
