She knocked and returned to her part of the cabin. Still with a hint of a smile on her lips and her embarrassment fading, she headed towards the small kitchenette to find the kettle. It was time for a cup of tea and a nice movie to relax and escape her current life. She needed to get away from her thoughts, her troubles that were eating at her. As she reached for the milk out of the fridge, a subtle thumping noise from the hall shifted her attention to the door again. Another message. She grinned, placed the milk on the bench, and picked up the next note: Hmm. I’d say that’s a lie. I heard your tears and it broke my heart.

Piper stood in search for a tissue box. How she hated to be here. She still couldn’t believe how she’d lost everything because of Darren. And what the hell had he done with all the money anyway? Good Lord, she wanted to punch him, preferably in his handsome face. Not only did he take all her money, no, he also sold the home from under her feet.

She glanced around the small cabin, her new home until she’d have enough money to buy a house. There weren’t enough words to express her gratitude towards Harrison who offered her this place to stay until … well until she was going to find something bigger, or at least better.

Something in the corner caught her attention. She walked over to the door, which Harrison told her lead to the shared bathroom. A little note was lying on the floor. She frowned and picked it up.

My name is Jon, I’m your cabin neighbour. Hope you are okay.

For the first time in days, a smile crossed her lips as she read it.  And she didn’t know why exactly. Possibly because there was another person in this world who cared, persisted enough to write this note. She’d heard the knock but hadn’t felt like talking to anybody. Reading the note again, she reached for the tissues on the shelf next to the door. Suddenly, an idea formed in her head, and she now searched for a piece of paper.

A few minutes later she stood at other side of the hall and slid her own note underneath the door: Thank you Jon. I appreciate your concern. I’m good.

She knocked and returned to her part of the cabin.

The sobbing stilled for a fleeting moment before he heard a scream in frustration. Raising his brows, he stepped to the door and knocked. An instant silence fell upon the room, and he knocked again. Nothing.

A mix of emotions surged through him which he wasn’t able to sort. Curiosity, wanting to know more about the person on the other side of the door. Irritation that she ignored him, but most of all a sense of worry. What on earth, or possibly who, could’ve upset her so much to have her distressed like this.

He returned to his part of the cabin, searched for a notepad and a pen and wrote: My name is Jon, I’m your cabin neighbour. Hope you are okay. With the piece of paper in hand, he returned, knocked again, and slid his message under the door. The subtle noise of footsteps told him that she’d come closer to pick it up and he went back to his rooms with a smile on his face.

Jon reached for his towel and headed towards the bathroom in the hall. He knocked at the door, even though he saw that there was no light filtering through the small gap at the floor. No one answered, so he stepped in. He placed his towel and soap on the small chair, undressed, and turned on the both tabs. Once the water was at the right temperature. For the next few minutes he enjoyed the warm spray hit his body. He lathered soap all over his body and washed his face. The shower soon ran out of hot water and he rushed to rinse off. A little while later he had towelled off and dressed. He reached for his belongings, opened the door, and switched off the lights. About to return to his part of the cabin, he stopped and listened.

Someone was sobbing.

It wasn’t his business, so he turned and walked towards his area. But stopped as he grabbed the door handle.

His neighbour’s sobs increased, the distress now obvious. He blew out a breath, turned, but hesitated.

I have moved forward a little into Jonathan’s POV. I hope you liked last week’s snippet of Piper’s story, which is another Alinta Bay book.

Today’s Snippet

He drove to his allocated cabin, parked, and carried his bags inside. It was a nice little place, with a small bedroom, kitchen, and a separate living area. Small, but comfortable, nicely decorated. A lockable sliding door in the corner led to a hallway, which had a door to the bathroom to the left and another sliding door at the other end. He assumed that this was the other cabin.

He returned to his side and unpacked some of his things, including his washing for which he’d have to find a laundry. Next, he flicked through the information book and ordered a pizza to be delivered. He wasn’t in the mood to go out tonight.

He was watching the news when he heard a knock at the door. Expecting the pizza delivery, he got up and opened the door.

“Sorry to disturb you, Mr Fuentes. And my apologies as well for letting you know that someone will, in fact, be in the second half of the cabin from Tuesday onwards.” The woman from the reception bit her lip. “It’s a female customer. I hope it won’t inconvenience you too much with the bathroom.”

That didn’t quite compute with him, but he was too tired to care. He had somewhere to stay for the next week. Not the hotel room he had hoped for, but considering the circumstances, he was glad he had somewhere to stay. And on short notice he’d decided to stay for the competition. Possibly have a surf as well. The town looked okay and it’d be good to catch up on a few things.

Jon had been on the road now for five months, enjoying his travels across the country. Obviously, he’d heard about the Great Ocean Road and its world-famous surf beach, so, of course, he wouldn’t let the opportunity go by.

And even if the other cabin was going to have a guest in it as well, it’d wouldn’t hurt him to share a bathroom, after all, a few months ago he’d stayed at a hostel and had to share a bathroom with about half a dozen people.
