When wealthy businessman Max Barnes takes in two orphans to rear as his own, he has no idea that the governess he hires to care for them will change his life.

Grace Martin has spent years protecting her country. Now she’s ready for a quiet, normal life as governess to a pair of young orphans. What she doesn’t count on is the children’s charming father stealing her heart and a vengeful assassin from her past targeting her through Max and his children.

Max and Grace must reveal their darkest secrets or risk losing everything.

Note: This book contains references to sexual abuse, child abuse, and mental health issues in a historical setting. It also has some sensual scenes and some violence.

Excerpt:

Grace had learned to expect the unexpected, but she was still surprised when she met Maxwell Barnes. Andrews, the butler, escorted her to the parlor to introduce her.

She had been wrong about Mr. Barnes being an older man. He was not only young, but incredibly attractive. Tall and lean with dark, curling locks, he carried himself with an air of confidence. Still, the sparkle in his blue eyes revealed a sense of humor.

He stood by the hearth, examining the brass clock resting on top of it, but his gaze shifted toward them and fixed on Grace. She couldn’t help noticing how his large eyes were far too beautiful. He had probably seduced half the female population of London
with those eyes.

“Sir, may I present Miss Grace Martin.”

Mr. Barnes nodded and flashed a charming smile. “A pleasure to meet you.”

“Good afternoon, sir.” Grace held his gaze.

Andrews left them alone to talk.

The thought crossed her mind that maybe the children weren’t orphans after all. Maybe they were Maxwell Barnes’s illegitimate offspring and he was trying to be decent by caring for them.

Speaking of the children, the pair sat side by side on the brown velvet couch. Though well dressed, they were rather thin, but Andrews had told her that they had been sorely neglected before Mr. Barnes took them in just under two weeks ago. He had quite literally taken them off the street.

Both children had straight, silky brown locks and large blue eyes. The girl looked a couple of years older than the boy, who had yet to lose his baby-like innocence.

“Miss Martin, please meet Jane and Sam.” Mr. Barnes gestured toward the children.

Grace offered them a slight smile. “Hello, children.”

“Hello,” they replied in unison.

“I understand you worked for the same family for the past year,” he continued.

“Yes, sir. It was only temporary, since I replaced their usual governess while she attended to family business in France. Once she returned, my services were no longer required.”

“Even so, they spoke highly of you. Please sit.” He motioned for her to take a chair near the couch.

She did as he asked, and he walked to the couch and sat beside Sam.

For the next half hour, the interview went smoothly, though Grace and Jane did most of the talking. Sam was rather timid, but after a while he responded to her more openly. She noted that he seemed particularly attached to Mr. Barnes.

The children were engaging and intelligent, but their poor background was apparent in their speech. Since they were so young, this would be relatively simple to correct.

Maxwell Barnes spent most of the interview observing her interaction with the children. He sometimes joined the conversation with pleasant and even humorous comments as well as questions about her previous post and her views on teaching. As she had guessed, he was a charmer. In her career, she had known all kinds of men and found his sort to be the most dangerous. Outwardly, he was easy to like, but what was his true nature beneath the handsome looks and boyish charm?

Finally he said, “Thank you for your time, Miss Martin.”

Was he dismissing her? Grace scolded herself for already imagining herself in this house, teaching these children and warding off the charming Mr. Barnes.

This week’s Hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE
by Iris Blobel

He reached for his phone and saw he’d missed two calls from Teddy. Ignoring them for the moment, he scratched the back of his neck. He’d failed as a bed and breakfast host. In fact, he hadn’t been good at all. His simple task had been to ask Lani to fill in the guest book and grab a copy of her driver’s licence. He’d been in such a rush after struggling with the flat tyre and so taken aback by his body’s reaction to her. Reaction? It hadn’t been a reaction but surprise. In all honesty, he’d expected a middle-aged woman, although he had no idea why. Seeing Lani, who was probably in her early twenties, with some out-of-control red hair, and green eyes, had thrown him. Those emerald eyes that had followed his every move as he showed her around.

Goddamn it. He didn’t want to think of Teddy’s guest as attractive. Not to mention, one who was here to see his friend Toby.

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE
by Iris Blobel

Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose and slid behind the wheel of his car, still confused by what had happened in the last twenty minutes. No doubt Lani Dekker was an interesting person. He shook that thought away. Interesting? How on earth was he able to make that judgement after only a few minutes of a chaotic conversation where lots had been implied and little had been said? Her reason for being here was to see Toby, and that in itself made her an interesting person. It was as simple as that. Plus, she had walked all the way from the main road and hadn’t once complained about her host being absent. Yes, she had been taken aback, but not annoyed. That made her interesting as well.

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE
by Iris Blobel

Was she going headfirst into a wall?

She shook the notion away. Everything was going to be fine, after all, he was her father.

Despite being exhausted, it took Lani a long time to fall asleep. So many things were going around in her head that her mind wasn’t able to calm. On top of that, every little noise in the house made her jerk and listen, resulting in a big lack of sleep.

Her emotions were going into overdrive. Yes, she finally was in New Zealand, however, an anxiety about meeting Tobias, her father, grew intensely within her.

Taking in a few long breaths, she reached for the light before searching for the photo of her mother and Tobias. It didn’t take long before she retrieved it from her jacket. She studied him and traced his face with her finger. The man next to her mother had dark curly hair, dark eyes, and a solid build. In her diary, her mother had described him as having chocolate brown eyes, thin lips, and dark chest hair.

Lani let out a soft snort. Clearly, she didn’t have the red hair from him, however, she could blame him for her wild curls.

“Tell Grandpa, I agree. I don’t have to meet him.” She paused for a beat. “But I want to.”

“Darling, don’t take it to heart. He feels he’s being replaced by—”

“No one could ever replace him,” Lani emphasised. “Grandpa is my one and only.”

Her grandmother let out a soft sigh but didn’t reply.

Lani massaged her forehead. “I’d better go and get a good sleep. It’s going to be a big couple of days.”

“I hope all goes well. We have our fingers crossed.”

“Thank you.”

She disconnected the call, checked her email, and switched off the phone. On second thought, she turned it on again but muted it.

Fingers crossed. Her grandmother’s words popped into her mind. Dylan had said something along that line as well. Why? What was she missing? Was she going headfirst into a wall?

Lani let out a snort, knowing that he hadn’t used Tobias’ name but a derogative word she’d rather not repeat. “Tell him he’s too impatient, just like Mum used to be. I’ve only just arrived.”

A moment of silence followed. The loss of her mother, her grandparents’ daughter still raw for all of them.

She heard her grandfather again. “You don’t have to meet him.”

A stab of pain went through her. Her grandpa had always been her best friend, the person she went to when trouble surrounded her, or during times she had her heart broken, and recently after she had lost her job and had to move in with grandparents because she had run out of money. Most of all, he’d been her rock when her mother had died in a plane crash six months ago. They’d spent hours on the couch watching TV or sat outside under the pergola watching the birds and the breeze rustling through the trees. They hugged, cuddled, often in silence, sometimes reminiscing stories of her mum. They cried often and they laughed as well. No way could she have coped without him. He’d been there for her despite grieving the loss of his child.

“Tell Grandpa, I agree. I don’t have to meet him.” She paused for a beat. “But I want to.”

“Thought I’d better give you a quick call to let you know I have arrived.”

The relief in her grandmother’s voice was evident by being up a notch. “Oh, darling. So good to hear from you. How was your flight and the bus trip?”

“All went well. The flight was smooth, and the bus ride here was okay, too.” She didn’t mention that she’d had to walk the last stretch of her journey. It would’ve only worried her grandmother.

“Is it as beautiful as the pictures you showed me?”

Her mouth curved into a smile. Yes, it was. She thought of the sparkling snow on the top of the mountains. “It’s dark here already, but I took a few photos, which I’ll send through once we’ll have finished the call.”

“I can’t wait. Are the owners nice and looking after you?”

Lani threw herself onto the bed undecided how to respond. Should she tell the truth? Her grandmother was already anxious about her travelling on her own, never mind the fact that she was twenty-five years old.

She heard her granddad in the background. “What was that?”

“Grandpa is being a smarty pants wanting to know whether you’ve already talked to Tobias.”

Lani stood and enjoyed the display in front of her for a while before she returned to her own room. She unpacked a sandwich and ate it as she read through the information folder. It had the touristy details in it like main phone numbers for police, hospital, and emergency. It also listed some local activities and recommended a few restaurants. It contained housekeeping items such as the location of the main exits in case of a fire and the time for breakfast, which, in her case at the moment, was irrelevant. It detailed instructions on how to light a fire, for which she was grateful, and the connection for the Wi-Fi.

She placed the folder back on the bedside table and reached for her phone to connect. Her relief was instant as soon as the little indicator told her she had been successful. Quickly, she checked her emails and then the local time in Melbourne. They were only two hours behind. She opened another app and called her grandmother.

For the next ten minutes, she wandered through the house and checked the doors and windows. The house was beautiful. The owner had decorated it in a tasteful mountain log cabin style. It had been built and primarily furnished of wood. And she loved it. Most of the spacious rooms incorporated a window bench to enjoy the view and a cosy little bathroom. The fireplace was the centrepiece of the living room … and suddenly she thought of the possibility of a cold night ahead, but with some relief, she remembered seeing a panel heater in her room. She needed to check it before going to bed.

After her tour of the house, Lani returned to the kitchen for her belated cup of tea and then meandered upstairs where she found another two rooms. Loft rooms. She strode over to the window and with a full moon shining bright, she was treated to a memorable view of the mountains in the distance. The snow glittered like diamonds under the starry night, dancing on the snow. It was hypnotising.
