The 3rd book in the Beginnings series was released in October, and I’d love to get “you hooked” with some snippets.

I’ve moved the story a little forward … this is when Jared meets Ivy, the heroine of this story. She’s left her boyfriend “to start a new life”

Enjoy ☺

Today’s Hook:

He burst into laughter, slowed down, and pulled the RV to the side, stopping right in front of the diner. With a chuckle, he said, “C’mon Ivy. My treat for a meal. Ya need to silence this tummy of yours if you wanna drive me bus.”
An overwhelming feeling rushed through Ivy. It was of such intensity, leaving her mouth dry and causing her heart rate to soar. She watched him walk around the RV right next to her door.
Not moving, she sat there watching every step as he came closer, shielding his eyes against the Arizona sun. Her palms moist from the heat inside the RV and the situationher heart was pounding as he smiled at her reaching for the door handle. With her shoulders sagged, she slowly stepped out.
“Jared—”
“Yeah, I know, mate, but you need food. Don’t need to give me details, but for heaven’s sake, ya need to put some food into you before drivin’.” He gently placed his hand under her elbow and led her towards the diner. “My treat.”
“I can’t,” she said as she tried to move her arm out of his hold.
“Yes, you can.”

BLURB:
Jared Fraser, a landscape business owner in Hobart, Australia, sets out for a holiday to the USA to travel along the Route 66 in a motorhome. Looking forward to his first holiday overseas, he’s excited as he prepares himself for the journey. But little could’ve prepared him for crossing paths with a beautiful hitchhiker.
Will he be able to put his past aside and grab onto happiness?
Ivy Bennett thought leaving her boyfriend would be the hard part. It doesn’t take long to figure out how wrong she was. As she struggles with making a new start in her life, the last person she expects to lead her to happiness is a laid-back Australian on vacation.
But she will have to say goodbye again. And not only to Jared.

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense with Historical elements

Narrator: Sara K. Sheckells

A tortured soul meets a shattered heart…

Chloe Hicks’ life consisted of an egocentric ex-husband, a pile of bills, and an equine business in foreclosure until a fire destroys the stable and her beloved ranch horse. What little hope she has left is smashed after the marshal suspects arson. She escapes the accusing eyes of her hometown, but not the memories and melancholy.

Jackson Hahn, Virginia Beach’s local historian, has his eyes on the mysterious new woman in town. When she arrives in Pungo, he is struck by her haunting beauty and the raw pain in her eyes. Her descriptions of the odd events happening in her bungalow pique his curiosity.

The sexy historian distracts Chloe with the legend of a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft. She is drawn to the story and the similarities of events that plagued their lives. Perhaps the past can help heal the present. But danger lurks in the shadows…

Chapter 1January, 2006
Four Seasons Riding Stable
Chloe sat straight up, willing the fog in her head to dissipate. The bed sheets were twisted around her ankles. Sweat trickled down her back. The terror froze her limbs while she struggled to calm her thudding heart and listen for the sound all horse owners dread. But it was the smell that made her realize this was not a terrible dream.Smoke.Instinct took over and she scrambled from the four-poster, making a beeline for the back door and the barn. Her toe smacked against the corner of a wall as her eyes adjusted to the darkness. Oh god, not my babies. Not Bunny. Panic weighed down her legs as her bare feet hit the gravel. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. She tried to run down the long driveway, her eyes riveted to the red-orange flames shooting up into the black sky. Paul emerged from the darkness, his face colored yellow from the fiery glow. He signaled for her to take the front of the building as he disappeared around the back. The frigid night air slapped her awake, but a horrifying screech from a panicked horse kicked in her adrenaline. Chloe reached the big, sliding doors and tugged them open. Heat smacked her face, and the smoke assaulted her lungs. Coughing, tears running down her cheeks, she slid back the bolts and opened the stall doors. On the other side, Paul’s voice faintly reached her over the crackle that filled her ears.“Hiya! Move it, move it.”The fire had consumed the other half of the barn where the arena was located. Above her was the loft, filled with winter hay and the last of her savings, now adding fuel to the already intense blaze. She pushed the thought from her mind as the flames shot through the center of the alleyway and the arena caved in.Grabbing one of the lead ropes that hung at each door, she smacked the first horse on the rump and sent him flying out of the barn. The first three horses on each side followed their stable mates into safety with little persuasion. But Duchess, her mother’s old mare, wouldn’t budge. Chloe threw the lead rope over her neck and forced a calm tone. “Easy, girl. That’s my girl. Walk on, now. Walk on.”The old horse snorted and pranced but followed her out of the stall. When they neared the opening, she withdrew the rope and whacked Duchess’ hindquarters. With a leap, the horse disappeared into the gray haze. The acrid odor of scorched hair and burnt wood filled her nostrils. Embers popped and her cheek blistered. She wiped at it with her shoulder as she led two more horses out by hand.Crack!Above them, a beam gave way and formed a fiery V. The horses must have sensed it also because they lunged ahead, snapping Chloe’s shoulders forward. She struggled to maintain her balance but fell to the matted floor, her knees striking the hard rubber. A boom behind her sent a spray of sparks, and pain shot along her backside. From the corner of her eye, she saw a strand of her hair spark. Frantically, she beat at it with her bare hand, putting it out on her neck. The heat was sweltering now. Images wavered in the flames that licked at the dry timbers of the remaining stalls and the heavy beams above.Scrambling to her feet, Chloe ran outside into the frigid night and stumbled down the drive to help Paul. As she reached the other side of the barn, she doubled over as a coughing spasm racked her body. Hands on her knees, gasping to pull air into her tight chest, she heard Paul yelling over the crackle and whinnies.“Bunny won’t leave the stall, and won’t let me near her foal.”“What about Jack?”“He’s good. C’mon, the roof is gonna give.”His hand tightened around her arm and pulled with such force her feet almost left the ground. Plunging back into the smoking hell, they entered Bunny’s stall and found the foal in the corner.“Paul, I’ll get the foal then Bunny will follow.”Another loud snap from above. She grabbed the lead rope dangling from the horse’s halter and handed it to the trainer. Running a palm down her mare’s neck, she spoke soothingly, “Atta girl, Bunny. There’s my girl. Let’s your get your baby out of here.” The mare’s ears perked at her voice and words. Chloe tossed a rope around the foal’s neck and pulled. The baby gave to the pressure and followed Chloe out.Behind her, a loud, splintering crash was followed by a shrill squeal. Her stomach twisted as she turned to see her trainer pulling at the lead rope. A fiery beam pinned Bunny as she thrashed, her legs flying in the air. One hoof caught the man in the head, and he crumpled to the ground.Fighting for air, her chest a tight ball of agony, Chloe stumbled back in and grabbed Paul under his arms. She dragged him with the last of her strength and shuffled backwards until her feet tripped on something solid. She fell, his body tangled in her legs as they both landed with a thud. A sob ripped at her raw throat at the sound of a muffled shriek. Tears spilled down her burning cheeks as she shook the lifeless body on top of her. Chloe collapsed hand rested on Paul’s chest, finding hope in the slight rise and fall of his shallow breathing. In the back of her brain, the sound of sirens wailed before the world went black.

“I… I didn’t—”
Quickly he reached out for her hand. “I’m pulling your leg.” And when she didn’t reply again, he muttered, “This thing with you Americans not understanding English is turning into a problem. I was kiddin’.”
“Pulling your leg?” She shook her head. “Oh! Oh, I remember my grandpa saying that sometimes.”
A bark of laughter filled the small space. “Anyway. Talkin’ about food. There’s a small place ahead. Want some lunch?”

****

Ivy was hungry indeed, but last time she had checked her wallet it was near empty. There was no way she was able to afford food in a diner.
“I’m not that hungry. I’ll wait outside,” she lied without looking at him.
As the words had left her lips, her stomach betrayed her by making a loud rumbling sound.
Jared laughed. “Sure? Ya might have to confer with your body, mate.”
Heat rushed into her, and her heart beat at an unusually fast rhythm. Still turned away from him, she watched nature go by, but his curses made her look back at him. With great effort, she held back a laugh as he switched on the windshield wipers instead of the blinker.
“We might not be able to speak English in your sense, but at least we know how to drive.”
He shot her a look, and worry shot through her she might have gone too far.
“You think ya can drive better?”
“Mate,” she mocked his Australian accent. “Americans know how to drive!”

Hardly lifting her feet off the ground, she headed towards the fridge, which didn’t have much to offer that tickled her fancy, so she grabbed the milk and some chocolate cake from her recent birthday.
The phone buzzed and the display announced Markus’ call.
“Marky, darlin’, we have to break up,” she said by way of answering the phone, hoping he’d get the hint that she was still embarrassed about her actions the previous night and not ready to face him, yet.
A bark of laughter echoed through the phone, and Sarah disconnected the call instantly.
The phone buzzed a couple more times, but she ignored it and devoured more of the cake in front of the TV. Breakfast television was always entertaining, but today the news of other people’s misery made her even more melancholic, and she changed over to the kids’ channel.
“Baby?”
Sarah nearly fell off the couch when she heard Mark’s voice. “How did you get in here?”
His chuckle did something to her body, yet, she wasn’t able to figure out whether it was irritation or pleasure.
“Keys,” he replied simply.
Sarah listened to his steps as he strode down the hall until he stood next to her. Ignoring him, she turned up the volume and laughed at some lame scene on the telly.
“Good morning,” he said as he sat next to her.
“We’ve broken up.”
He laughed again.

Today’s Hook:

Jared held her gaze but wasn’t sure what else to say or do, especially as she simply stood in front of him, frozen to the spot.
“My name is Ivy,” she said after a long moment.
“Hedera. An evergreen climbing or ground-creeping woody plant in the family Araliaceae.”
With a frown, she stared at him. “I really didn’t understand that one.”
He laughed. “Sorry, mate. I got carried away. I’m a landscaper. Ivy is a climbing plant.” Scratching the back of his head, he added, slightly self-conscious, “And, of course, a beautiful name.”
Letting out a soft laugh, she stepped into the motorhome while Jared went around and slid behind the wheel before driving back onto the road. There was a long silence, and he started to feel uneasy. Usually, he was good with silence. In fact, he loved it. But at that moment, the silence made him uncomfortable.
“So, what brings ya out into the middle of the sticks?”
There was no reply, so he turned to look at her. A big frown appeared between her brown eyes, causing him to let out a small sigh.
“I thought you all speak English as well?”
“We do,” she said with a soft snort. “But I’m not so sure whether Australians do.”
With a grin he replied, “Now, don’t be cheeky, Ivy.”
“Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, my mom always said.” She laughed. “No way would I make fun of you.”
“So, you’re expectin’ a meal as well?”
There was a moment of silence again, and he glanced over. The smile was gone and panic was written all over her face.

When Sarah woke the next morning, she stared into the distance. A smile touched the corner of her lips as pictures of the previous day of the wedding came back into her mind. The pair were so much in love, and Sarah was glad Tyson and Katie had finally walked down the aisle. The two had met at the New South Wales coast and it’d been a rocky road for them to make the relationship work. But in the end their love was stronger, and Katie had become used to the limelight surrounding her football star husband.
And then there were a few of the images, however, from the previous night that caused her to shiver. She cringed as she remembered how she had thrown herself into Markus’ arms. Pulling the duvet over her head, she inhaled a deep breath and then released it slowly, hoping for time to erase that part of the day from history.
What had she been thinking?
After a good long stretch, she moved her head to the left and to the right, noticing that her head still ached even after thirty-six hours and lots of sleep. Her body felt heavy and sluggish, but Sarah willed it to move and get out of bed.
Never again would she touch a glass of red wine.

Insults for a King, from Bringer of Chaos by Kayelle Allen @kayelleallen #SciFi

In the book Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire, the main character is Pietas, an immortal king in exile. His friend, Six, is quasi-immortal. Six was once human, but was infused with the blood of Pietas’s people to enable him to kill their kind. These two were mortal enemies from the moment they were born, yet against all odds and reason, they’ve become friends.
Several times in the story, Six finds ways to needle Pietas. Predictably, the king reacts. The banter between these two is a joy to write. I love finding ways to bring out their frenemy background. Here’s an example. Since Six was once the ultimate enemy of Pietas’s people, the man refuses to identify himself and accepts the name Six that Pietas had given him. Pietas, on the other hand, refuses to allow anyone to nickname him, so of course, Six has.

This scene is from book one, the Origin of Pietas.

“Six, you’ve been good to me. I appreciate it. I don’t say that enough.”
“No problem. Glad to do it, Three Point One Four.”
“Three point…” Pietas grappled with what the number might indicate. “Pardon?”
“I’ve decided that’s your name. Now that we’re friends.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Your name.” Six sat up. “Since you call me Six, I’m going to call you Three Point One Four.”
“I fail to see the significance of the number.”
“Really?” A big grin crossed Six’s face. “And here I thought you were good at math. It’s pi.”
“No!” Pietas sat bolt upright. “I forbid you to call me that. I am Pietas. Pee-ah-toss. You may not call me Pi.”
“Why not?”
“It is not my name!”
“Oh, you mean like Six isn’t mine. It’s a number.”
“Simple remedy. Tell me your name.”
The quiet lengthened, but then Six stretched both arms over his head, and gave a wide yawn. “Nah. I don’t think so.”
“Fine, then.” Pietas settled himself on the ground once more. “Six it is.”
“Guess I’m stuck with it.” He grinned at Pietas as he stood. “Pi.”
Pietas sent an empathic icicle Six’s way. Infuriating person!
“Back at you, Ultra.”

And this is from book two, Forged in Fire.

“Pi, look at this view!”
The nickname irked. He’d asked Six to drop it, to no avail. Pee-ah-toss, he ranted in silence. Not Pi. Pee-ah-toss. I can hear you thinking. You know that, right?”
Then you know what I’m thinking now.
Same to you, Ultra. Besides, you call me Six. I call you Pi. Suits you.” Six is an integer. Pi is an irrational number.”
The man shot him a smile. “Like I said.”
Both books reveal the friendship between these two, and each has an adventure that takes them on a perilous journey. In Forged in Fire, Pietas reunites with a beautiful telepathic warrior he’s loved for lifetimes. He also forms a bond with a sentient panther named Tiklaus. This ginormous beast protects Pietas and follows him everywhere. Like any cat, it demands attention, and–when no one is looking–belly rubs, which the exiled king is happy to provide.

I hope your readers will take a peek inside both books. They can download the first three chapters of each on my website. Both are available on Amazon and in print. Forged in Fire is free on Kindle Unlimited.

Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas
A captive of the people he loathes, the immortal Pietas is left for dead on the planet Sempervia. Six, a human soldier who is abandoned with him, offers food and water. Is this man worthy of friendship? Or is this another trap?
Either way, Pietas must do the one thing he detests. Trust a human…

Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire
When the immortal Pietas is marooned on a barren world with no food and few survival tools, he knows it could be worse. He could be alone. But that’s the problem. He’s not.
Half a million of his people sleep in cryostasis, trapped in their pods and it’s up to Pietas to rescue them. Before he can save his people, he must take back command from a ruthless enemy he’s fought for centuries. His brutal, merciless father. Immortals may heal, but a wound of the heart lasts forever…

Acknowledging that she wasn’t much into sharing details like her name, he opened the door for her. “Where are ya headin’?” he asked.
A smile started in her eyes and played with the corner of her lips. There was an appreciation in her gesture, and he returned the smile.
“Could you drop me off at the next stop?” she asked hesitantly.
“Most certainly, but where are ya headin’?”
She shrugged. “Kingman?”
“Is that on this road?”
Inclining her head, she replied, “Yes, it is. It should be less than a hundred miles along this highway.”
“Then hop in.”
She turned to get into the motorhome, and he took in her small stature and the narrow shoulders which seemed even smaller in her tight, red T-shirt. Jared noticed her cargoes were just hanging onto her hips. A nice steak wouldn’t go astray on these hips. Suddenly she stopped and moved to look at him. “Thank you,” she whispered.
