“My cooking is basic but good.”
He held out his hand. “Deal?”
Letting out a soft laugh, she looked past him and into the distance before she finally took his hand. “Deal.”
“Perfect. I really appreciate it.”
He turned to leave when her question stopped him. “How good of a carpenter are you?”
He winked. “The best you can get, honey.”
Her snort didn’t get past him as she closed the door, but he wasn’t lying. Even though he was flying planes to make a living nowadays, it was carpentry that he loved. When he’d moved to Seward a few years back, he’d spent all his spare time building his own house. A rustic, two story log cabin just outside of town. It’d not only given him something to do, but also kept him busy with what he loved most — carpentry. The house was his pride. He’d been able to add most of his ideas, especially the main fireplace downstairs. During the long winter days, he loved sitting in front of it with a beer and watching a good movie. Or having friends over for a basketball game. His upstairs bedroom had a balcony accessible through French doors overlooking the water — his favourite place during summer.

“Fifty hours?”
He hitched a shoulder. “I was stuck in bad weather up north.”
It was obvious she was contemplating his words, but he wasn’t sure why.
“How about you move back in until your house is fixed up?” He removed his hand from the door and put on a big smile. “If you come over in about an hour, I’ll even make you a nice breakfast. You like bacon and eggs, right?”
The stunned look on her face told him everything. She wasn’t sure how to take the 180-degree change from last night. He rubbed his face with both hands before he explained again, “I’m honestly sorry. Coming home wasn’t easy, especially not with Grandma gone. Please, let’s try again. There’s obviously a reason that Grandma’s lawyer trusted you with the keys, so I do too.” He wrinkled his nose at the smell. “And, according to the little whiff I’m getting here, I think you do need to stay somewhere else.”
She pressed her lips together before a small smile spread across her face. “I won’t be much trouble, but I work from home, so I’ll be around a bit.”
He nodded. “No problems at all. I have a few things to get organised.” About to leave, he paused for a moment, contemplating his words. “By any chance—” He paused. “How well do you cook? I’m a carpenter by trade and was wondering if I can help fix your house up and maybe you could make me some dinners.”
She smiled, and damn if that smile didn’t do something to his groin.

Molly and Noah’s first encounter?
Let’s just say it involves his grandmother’s bathroom, an unexpected neighbour in the shower, and a jet-lagged pilot who isn’t at his most charming.
They’re opposites in many ways, but they might just be a perfect match.
At first glance, Molly and Noah have little in common. He craves solitude, while she’s spent her life putting others first. He’s haunted by his own past, and she’s trying to rebuild from hers. But as they spend more time together, something shifts. Their differences become less like barriers and more like the pieces of a puzzle falling into place.

Excerpt 1
The knock was louder this time accompanied by muffled shouting.
Noah?
She headed towards the front and opened the door where she found him standing.
With his travel bag.
Slowly, she lifted her brows questioningly at him.
“I need a place to sleep,” he explained.
Staring at him, she wasn’t able to connect all the dots. “Excuse me?”
“Time to return the favour, honey.” He stepped closer. “My mother has moved in and there’s no way I’ll stay in the same house as her.”
Still lost for words, she gazed at him as he walked right past her towards the other end of the house.
“Make yourself at home,” she whispered more to herself than to him.
“Thanks.” He choked back a chuckle, obviously aware of what she’d said. “I promise you, I’ll get a flight as soon as possible and won’t bother you much.” Then he looked over his shoulder, meeting her gaze. “Unless you prefer me to get a hotel room.”
She bit her lip, contemplating the implications this move was going to have. “No. No. It’s okay. Of course it is.”
He frowned. “Are you sure?”
Molly stepped closer to him and tugged a strand of hair behind her ear. “Yes, I’m a hundred percent sure. Just a little surprised, is all.” She waved her hand towards the two bedrooms at the back of the house. “You know the place. Take your stuff to the spare room at the back. I was about to have a cup of tea in the back yard. Would you like to join me?”
A smile curled his lips. “Got something stronger for me?”
Lifting a shoulder, she walked past him and into the kitchen. “I might still have a beer, but I’m not sure.”
Ten minutes later, they sat under a tree in the back corner of her yard.
“Cheers.” He lifted the bottle to his lips and took a long pull.
Molly smiled and had a sip of her tea as well. Then she said, “Your grandmother missed your mother and was always hoping for her to return.”
Even without looking at him, she had a fair idea how hard this was for him.
“So did I.”
“Didn’t you sometimes have the urge to search for her?”
“Nope.”
“Would you like me to shut up?”
He choked back a chuckle. “Yes.”
“This is the most interesting conversation I’ve been having in weeks, if not months.”
Wiping the froth of the beer from his top lip, he looked into the distance. “I’m sorry. I’m letting out my frustration at the wrong person.”
Unsure how to reply, Molly remained silent.
“As a kid I waited every day for my mother to return home. Grandma told me she was on holidays in a country far away and it took a long time to travel from here to there and back.” He rested his arms on his knees and stared at his feet. “Well, we both know the end of the story, don’t we?”
“The end hasn’t been written, yet.”
He cocked a brow when he met her gaze.
“She’s come here–”
“Too late.”
“Too late for what?”
Taking a deep breath, he stood and finished the rest of the beer in one swig.
“I understand you’re angry with her–”
“Molly.” He reached for her hand, trying hard to curb the growing frustration within him. “I like your company. I like you. However, the last thing I want is to have some psychology talk from you.”
She lowered her head. “Fair enough. I’m sorry.”
Shaking his head, he quickly said, “Don’t be. I know you mean well.”
Aware of his touch, she closed her eyes concentrating on Ben’s image, but the only thing her mind was registering was Noah’s hand, the warm skin against her palm, and his fingers pressing against hers ever so softly. She pulled her hand back when he lifted his to cup her face before he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. The tips of his fingers on her neck sent a tingle down her spine. There was a moment when he paused before brushing his lips across hers. The scent his aftershave and the heat radiating from his body made her want to put her arms around his neck.
But she didn’t.
Not even when he grazed her lips with his tongue, despite wishing every inch of her body was touching his.
But she moved away, arguing with herself whether she was kissing him or wishing it was Ben.
She met his gaze, about to apologise when his phone rang.
He checked the ID. “I’m sorry. I think I should take this.”

It took Molly a while to open the front door, and he assumed that she’d gone to stay somewhere else. As he was about to leave, the door flew open and with it escaped a stale, musty smell … he didn’t know what it was, but it wasn’t pleasant.
She sighed at the sight of him.
With her underwear hanging on his fingers, he lifted his hand towards her. “You forgot some of your stuff.”
Letting out a string of curses, she snatched the panties and bra off his hand and started to slam the door shut again.
Noah quickly held his hand against the door, and blew out a sigh. ”Sorry.” Her blue eyes darkened as he held her gaze. “Look. I’m sorry. It wasn’t my best day. How about we start over again?”
While she didn’t open the door any farther, the pressure on his hand to hold it open became lighter, which he considered a good sign.
“I’ve had a really shitty week,” he explained.
She tilted her head slightly as to tell him she couldn’t care less.
“I travelled for more or less fifty something hours and I missed my grandmother’s funeral. I was beat last night. I’m sorry.”
The expression on her face softened. “You wanted to come to your grandmother’s funeral?”
Taken aback by her question, he blinked, unsure how to take it. “Of course. I mean, hey, she was my grandmother. The only family I had. Bad enough that I didn’t even know she was sick.”

When Noah woke, he’d been asleep for much longer than he’d anticipated. He sat up, his back and legs sore from the uncomfortable position he’d fallen asleep in. Moving his head, to get the kink out of his neck, he checked the time on his watch. It was after seven o’clock in the morning. He’d almost slept a solid ten hours.
A banging from the back of the house caught his attention and he stood to find out what it was. He followed the noise and saw the door to the laundry wasn’t shut properly, the wind today causing it to thud occasionally. Shaking his head at the thought of how much repair work needed to be done, he opened it and secured it with the little peg basket from the shelf. He looked around and scratched the back of his head when he saw the old washing machine. Hopefully, he’d find instructions to use this thing. Something else behind it caught his attention: a small washing rack with some items on it … and by the looks of it, they belonged to Grandma’s neighbour. He lifted a brow as he eyed the lacy panties and a black bra. Exhaling a long breath, he remembered how badly he’d treated her. And as if they were still unwashed, he picked up her belongings and found his way to his neighbour.

Noah’s shoulders sagged as soon as he heard the slamming of the door. It hadn’t been his best behaviour, but he was tired from the long travel and hungry. He walked over to the lounge room, grabbed the sandwich he’d bought on the way into town, and sat on the old sofa. After he kicked off his shoes, he leaned back into the comfortable cushions and put his legs onto the coffee table. As he chewed away on the tasteless bread with some old ham and lettuce in it, he thought about Molly. He closed his eyes and tried to visualise her. She wasn’t what he’d expected to find in the house, but it’d been a nice surprise. He thought her to be in her mid- to late twenties, a bit younger than him. Partially hidden by her towel, her body had still been damp from the recent shower and clearly outlined against the thin fabric. With amusement, he remembered her cheeks had been flushed and her hair wet and wild. And her eyes. Her blue eyes had a look of sadness in them. Then there was the scar on her face. That was a mystery. But her lips. He’d have given anything to touch those lips with his.
And with that last thought, he dropped off into a deep sleep.

Noah placed the glass in the sink then leaned against the bench as he crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Why did he let you stay here?”
“Why wouldn’t he? I needed somewhere to go, and this is very convenient.”
“Still don’t understand why he lets you stay here.”
She pressed her lips together, trying hard not to let her frustration win the fight. Mrs. Fielding had told her many stories about her grandson, and she knew his upbringing hadn’t been the easiest, but she’d hoped for someone a bit more like the old lady — kind and charming. The man standing in front of her was the complete opposite.
The whole conversation she had practised over the last few days was gone suddenly. The words to explain how his grandmother had missed him and how proud she’d been of him. She opened her mouth but closed it again as she turned and walked off, back into her temporary room. It took her only a few minutes to pack up her belongings before she left the house, slamming the door behind her.

Without looking at her, he repeated his earlier question. “Want to tell me who you are?”
The word no lay on the tip of her tongue, but she admitted he had a right to know. “My name is Molly Reid. I live next door.”
He turned to look at her as if he expected more.
“My house was flooded during the last dump of rain. Forgot to clean the gutters. Your grandmother’s lawyer agreed for me to stay here until the end of the week.”
“Why?”
She clenched her jaw to kill the frustration inside. “Because my house was flooded.”

Frustration boiling within her, she stomped past him and into the far bedroom where she had set up camp while staying in the house. Cursing under her breath, she rummaged through her bag to find a fresh set of socks, a clean T-shirt, and a skirt. About to search him out, she stopped, took out the makeup bottle from her bag, and applied some to her face. A quick look in the mirror assured her the scar was hardly visible.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and walked down the hall, finding him in the kitchen.
Again, without hiding it, he took her in from her toes to her face, lingering a little longer at her chest.
She crossed her arms in front of her. “You’re not supposed to arrive before Friday.”
He chuckled. “I had no idea I needed your permission. Remember, this is my house.”
“The lawyer told me—”
“He told you wrong. I’m here, get used to it.” He opened the cupboard to retrieve a glass and filled it with water from the tap. She was surprised how familiar he still was with the house, because after all, it would’ve been a bit over ten years since he’d been here last.

She let go of the bottle and held on to the sink, dizziness spreading through her.
“Noah?” Her voice was faint and she wasn’t sure herself whether the sound that had come across her lips had been his name.
He nodded. “And you are?”
Heat rushed to her cheeks as she realised again that she was standing in his bathroom, more or less naked. Not to mention she was supposed to be angry with him for not coming to the funeral. “Your neighbour.”
“Nice to meet you, neighbour. Want to tell me what you’re doing in my bathroom?”
She swallowed hard. “Taking a shower.”
In a very casual and slow move, he raked his hand through his hair. “I can see that, smarty pants. Why, though?”
“Mine’s flooded.” The reply sounded insufficient even to her, and she knew she owed him a better explanation. However, at the moment she had a more urgent issue. “Do you mind if I get dressed and we’ll sort this out in a few minutes?”
“Be my guest.”
But he didn’t move. He simply stood there with a slow grin spreading across his face.
“You will need to leave.”
He nodded towards the toilet. “I need to use this thing.” And with a shrug, he added, “From memory it’s the only one in the house.”
