Finally, she looked up. “Come on, Mon, nobody will think less of you if you pull the plug on this crazy plan,” Maggie had urged.

Mallory had smiled, pleased Maggie still used her old nickname: Mon, short for Mallory O’Neill, a reminder of all their years together. “It’s not crazy,” she had insisted, though her voice carried a touch of uncertainty. “Well, okay, maybe it is. But it’s a great opportunity. There’s nothing keeping me here.”

Maggie had raised an eyebrow. “Nothing? You’re saying I’m nothing? John, Liz, Jane. We’re nothing?”

Mallory’s heart had ached, suddenly aware of what she’d said. “You know I didn’t mean it like that.”

“It most certainly sounded like it, though,” Maggie had countered. She let out a sigh. “You’ve just had three of your paintings accepted at the gallery down the road,” she had pointed out.

Mallory had released a long breath, crossing her arms defensively. “Really? Three paintings that may or may not sell over the next months. That’s not enough to live on.”

Mallory O’Neill swaps the buzz of Melbourne for the quiet shores of Anahera Bay, New Zealand, hoping for a fresh start… not secrets and surprises. But the crumbling seaside cottage left to her by Sofia—the grandmother she never knew—holds more than just dust and disrepair. It holds the key to a family history her late mother never spoke of.

As Mallory pieces together Sofia’s past, she faces the doubts of old friends and the arrival of an unexpected stranger. Along the way, she finds friendships among the locals, but she also meets resistance from the brooding handyman, Cameron Quinn, a man haunted by his own past.

When faded letters, old photographs, and buried truths come to light, Mallory and Cameron find themselves drawn together by grief, memory, and a spark neither of them expected.

The man turned to get the flight attendant’s attention, and Mallory gazed back out the window, mesmerised by the view of Queenstown nestled against the shimmering lake, a gondola going up a mountain, and boats sprinkled across the water. She instinctively grabbed her phone to capture some images. The blue sky with merely a few wispy clouds allowed her a clear view extending far into the distance. Would she see alpine mountains like this where she was headed?

She tightened her grip on the armrest as the plane landed with a couple of jolts and came to a quick stop, pulling Mallory out of her thoughts.

A mix of excitement and apprehension bubbled inside her, and Mallory barely noticed that the seatbelt light turned off. Instead, she reached for her bag, sliding her phone inside just as the screen lit up from the movement. The screensaver appeared with a snapshot of her with her friend Maggie, drenched from head to toe, caught off guard by an unexpected wave during their last trip to the coast. She could almost hear their laughter echoing in her mind as she remembered the long drive home, both of them caught in the amusement all the way.

Her mind drifted back to the previous evening, when Maggie had shown up with fish and chips, calling it a proper goodbye. Fidgeting as she placed the food on the table, she scanned the room until her eyes landed on Mallory’s bags.

Hi everyone ♥

I’d like to introduce you to my newest release WHISPERS OF HER MEMORIES. The story is set in New Zealand, South Island.

Mallory gazed out the window as the plane descended into Queenstown, New Zealand. Over two thousand kilometres separated her from the life she’d known in Melbourne, a life she’d willingly left behind, fascinated by the memories of her family’s history. Outside, the landscape unfolded like a painted masterpiece. Jagged peaks dusted with snow rose beside a vast lake shimmering under the sunlight, its royal blue depths seemingly bottomless. Winding roads traced the landscape, weaving along the water’s edge at the foot of the mountains.

Her heart raced, knowing this would soon be her new home, a place she could see herself falling in love with.

“You can see Mt Cook over there. Or Aoraki, as they call it now,” the older man beside her said, gesturing towards the mountains. “He stands tall above all the other peaks.”

Mallory glanced out. Sure enough, one peak rose higher than the rest, peeking through the clouds in the distance. “Thank you,” she said softly.

“You’re here on a holiday?” he inquired.

Mallory hesitated. Drained of all energy, she couldn’t bring herself to explain. The farewell to her friends in Melbourne, especially to Maggie, had taken its toll. “Yes,” she lied, guilt tugging at her.

“You travelling alone? Brave thing, that,” he said kindly. “But you have a good time, aye?” His words struck her more than they should have, reminding her of the truth of it. Yes, she was alone… And the reality of it was slowly sinking in.

“Alaska? Mrs. Fielding always told me about California.”

“Couldn’t stand the place. I reckon I was there for about eight or nine months before I settled in Alaska.”

The kettle whistled at the same time as her phone rang. She checked the ID. “My apologies. This is business. I have to take the call.”

It didn’t bother him at all. The chitchat thing wasn’t for him anyway. California, he thought as he heaved a massive sigh.

California.

Sadness shrouded him and killed the chuckle in his throat. It’d been thirteen years since he’d left and his grandmother hadn’t known he now called Alaska home. Lowering his head, he closed his eyes and rode out a wave of anguish. He’d let her down. Failed her. After all she had done for him, he’d packed up and left. Never contacted her. God knows how often he’d picked up the phone but hung up again not knowing what to say. Now he wished he had. He’d give anything to get the chance again. So many things, but most of all the three simple words: I love you.

He took deep breaths until he was strong enough to raise his head and a thought entered his mind: How the hell had they found him?

When he remained silent, she stood and turned on the kettle. “Each to their own.”

Thinking of his own situation, he somehow understood. More than understood. He thought of the many days he sat on the balcony watching nature go by. He agreed with her, no doubt. Content was a good word to describe it. Or happy with life.

“Tea?”

He shook his head. “Coffee, please.”

It was obvious she’d been a regular visitor to this place by the way she knew her way around the kitchen. She grabbed two cups. “What about you?”

He didn’t follow her train of thought. “What about me?”

“What made you leave?”

He let out a chuckle as he leaned back into the chair. “Where to start?”

“Will you stay here?”

Another chuckle, although more like a snort. “Damn, no.”

She gazed out the window, and it reminded him of his grandmother standing there, watching the water in the distance while telling him about his mother in her younger years, or his grandfather who’d died a long time ago. No surprise that Molly had got along so well with his grandma.

She dropped her chin before turning. “Do you live by the sea in California?”

A frown pulled his brows. “California? I live in Seward. That’s in Alaska. And yes, I live by the sea. I built a small house there.”

Her face lightened straight away. “She was lovely — as you know. I don’t think it took her more than twenty-four hours until she came to visit me with a big basket full of scones after I’d moved in.”

“When did you move in?”

“Why?”

She looked up at him, a blank expression on her face as if she didn’t know what he meant with the question.

“Usually, people move here when they retire. Or families come here for a tree change. What about you?”

She wasn’t more forthcoming with her next answer either. “Tree change.”

“Single, I assume, and you move to this forsaken town for a tree change?”

“It’s beautiful here,” she explained. “I always wanted to live near the beach, and I love sitting on the front deck staring across the water. It makes me content.”

He considered her to be in her late twenties. Early thirties at the very most. Single. Well, as far as he knew. The fact that she’d moved to a small town, away from the main cities, was still a puzzle.

He stepped into the kitchen and placed the bags onto the bench. First, though, he tried to get the old radio going before unpacking all the plastic bags. As he gathered the frying pan and started cooking the bacon and eggs, he thought of the girl behind the checkout. No, she wasn’t his type, but he thought he remembered her from school. Lauren was her name. Or Laura? Leila? She’d been one of the few girls at school who’d been very kind to him. At least some of the time. He rubbed his chest to ease the pain of a stabbing sensation while reminiscing his younger years emerged again. He’d been tempted to say hello but wanted to keep his presence in town quiet for a little while longer.

“Hi.”

His head jerked up to look at Molly. Her heavy makeup didn’t go with her casual clothes. Was she hiding something? Was it to cover the scar? But why?

“Thanks again for letting me stay here. I do appreciate it.”

His mouth pulled into a smile. “No problems at all.” He served up two plates and placed them on the table where Molly had already laid out some cutlery. As they sat, he inquired, “Tell me a bit about Grandma.”

The current situation, however, was a necessity, and he’d make sure to see it that way. Not that he was interested in her anyway. He liked his women blonde and tall.

Yet, something about Molly intrigued him, drew him in, and it bugged the hell out of him that he wasn’t able to figure out what it was.

“Molly?”

Her head popped around the corner from his old bedroom, looking at him. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t stand the smell in the house much longer.”

He nodded. “No problems. I’ll be in the kitchen starting the breakfast.” Then paused for a moment. “Will you take that room?”

A worried expression spread across her face. “Will that be okay?”

He choked back a chuckle. “Yup. I’m not that eager to move back into my old bedroom. I’ll take Grandma’s craft room.”

“What about the master bedroom?”

“There’s no way in hell I’ll sleep in the same bed as my grandmother did for over half a century.”

He heard her laugh as he disappeared into the kitchen.

“She bought the bed only a few months ago,” she shouted from down the hall.

Still didn’t convince him. The thought of staying in his grandmother’s room, whether it would be the old or a new bed, gave him hives.

Sighing, he reminded himself he’d left that chapter of his life behind and as he closed the door on his painful thoughts, he was thankful something else shifted his attention. Something that put a smile on his lips.

Pulled by curiosity, he listened to the noise from the back of the house — Molly humming quietly to some pop song.

It hit home with him that he’d never shared a house with a woman. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger wondering why he’d suggested the arrangement. There was no shortage of women in his life. Once the braces had come off when he’d been seventeen, it’d been another year before he’d left for the U.S. and another six months before he’d had his eyes fixed surgically. And after that, he had received lots of female attention.

And he’d never regretted it. He’d loved the women, and they loved him, but never did he let them come in or stay at his house. A relationship was not on his agenda. And he liked it that way. There’d been too many women in his life who had either disappointed him or he had been disheartened by them — mainly his mother and grandmother. He had no intentions of dealing with that stuff again. He listened again

But had he? Of course he hadn’t. Otherwise being in the house with an attractive woman would excite him instead of causing his emotions to go haywire. Rememberinghow often he’d come home from school in tears because of all the nasty things he’d been told, not coping with the teasing by the other children, the degrading by the teachers, or the laughter from the girls made his stomach churn. He’d been the ugly kid in the neighbourhood. And he’d hated it.

Shit!

He didn’t want to relive his past, he wanted to forget about the braces and thick glasses, but also the fact that he’d lived with his grandmother because his mother had run off with some French guy and he had no idea about his father.
