The slight frown on her father’s face told her he wasn’t convinced, but he let it go.

The chapter Ryan was in the past. It was a closed book, placed into the very back corner of her shelf so it was easily forgotten.

“I hope he was reprimanded as well.”

“You have to have the last word, don’t you, Harold?” Her mother blew out a little breath. “Addy’s moved on, and you should, too.”

He mumbled some more words, which made Addison smile. Ever the protective father.

She admired the view across the ocean again, listening to the constant roar of the surf — her thoughts wandering off again to the Christmas Carols a few weeks earlier.

And the dad without a name.

Ana placed a hand on her husband’s arm, and her message to him was clear, even unspoken. Leave it be.

Addy’s lips tightened at the memories and what she’d gone through since. “We’re done.” She paused, leaned forward, and rested her arms on the table. “I’ve learnt my lesson and have moved on.” Her throat tightened, and tears pooled in her eyes as she gazed across the water, watching the waves crashing over the rocks.

“I suppose he still has his job,” her father grumbled.

“It was my choice.”

“Choice or no choice—”

“Dad,” Addison interrupted him as she met his gaze. “Look at it this way. I got to move to this beautiful place. Remember, Nan always said If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” Her mouth curled in a smile. “It was meant to be.”

Her mother placed a hand on hers, smiling with understanding.

And, however unintentionally it might have been, her father destroyed her moment of happiness. “Heard from Ryan?”

It took Addison only to hear his name to feel nauseous. And sad. But above all, it made her anxious. The sudden swirl of emotions overwhelming her. With a big exhale, she shook her head. “No.” And in almost a whisper she added, “I can’t believe I was so naïve. And stupid.”

She had no idea what she had she been thinking at the time she’d started to date him. It had probably been his charm as well as the attention he’d given her. Addison had felt desired for the first time in her adult life.

“Good. I hope he doesn’t know you’re here. I’ll—”

She wasn’t able to recall where the mother had been, but yes, she remembered the dad vividly. Of course, she remembered him. His image kept coming back to her — his tousled short dark hair, the intense blue eyes, and a toned physique that she’d been able to see his muscles moving under his shirt. Or his long legs, which moved so effortlessly with leisurely grace.

Good Lord, those legs.

But she wasn’t able to remember his name.

And, with a sigh of disappointment, she remembered he hadn’t offered any help.

Harry waved a hand in front of her face. “Earth to Addy. Are you all right?”

The sound of the sea caught her attention and she watched the subtle movement of the water. Yes, she was all right, and she knew this was going to be a great year.

“Dad, I’m not sure how to explain this, but I think I just had one of those moments of contentment. I have a feeling Alinta Bay will be good for me.”

Her mother, Ana, gently rested her hand on Addison’s arm. “Oh, Addy darling. Not to forget, you also have inherited your father’s pigheadedness.”

The room filled with their laughter.

“How about I prepare some lunch before we start emptying the boxes? I can unpack some of your utensils while in the kitchen,” her mother suggested.

Addy placed a kiss on her mother’s cheek. “That’d be lovely. Thank you.”

** AND A LITTLE MORE **

Ana stepped over a few of the boxes and around some of the furniture. Addison watched as her mother gave her husband a quick smile before she left the room. Addy met her father’s eyes for a brief moment, her unspoken appreciation of her parents’ help as well as their love accepted with a wink.

Little by little, she unpacked the smaller boxes, while her father started moving bigger items like furniture.

A thrill of excitement ran through her as the house was filled with her belongings, making it hers. She’d collected some durable, good quality second hand furnishings. The Melbourne apartment she’d lived in had been in a beautiful location, but it’d been small but all she’d been able to afford in the metropolitan city.

The school she had worked for the previous two years hadn’t been able to renew her contract, so she’d decided to try a sea change. The contract at Alinta Bay Primary School was for twelve months only, but the Principal was confident, if she performed well, that it could turn into an ongoing position.

He’d given her a week to make a decision, but one weekend in Alinta Bay and she’d already made up her mind. She had loved the place.

It was her mother this time who brought her back to the present. “Lunch is ready, Addy. Want me to set something up on the veranda?”

“That’d be perfect, Mum. Thank you so much.”

Moments later, Addison sat on the small patio at the back of her house with her parents having their lunch, and everyone enjoying the view. The day she’d inspected the house with her parents for the first time, was the day she’d known better things lay ahead of her.

“I can see your mother coming for a visit more often than you might like.”

Addison let out a little laugh.

Her mother wagged her hand at her husband with a grin. “Oh, Harry. Don’t be like that. I love the sea and you know that. But I know not to overdo it with my visits.”

“That’s okay, Mum. You’re more than welcome here. I suppose it’ll be nice to have you come around once in a while.”

“Have you met anybody, yet, darling?” her mother wanted to know.

She nodded. “Yes. Don’t you remember I told you about the Christmas Carols a few weeks back? I was introduced to the other staff and some children. The teachers were lovely and very welcoming. I was also introduced to my class.”

“Oh, how wonderful,” her mother cooed.

“The few children I met seemed very well behaved and very nice. I even had the chance to talk to some of the parents. A few of them offered to help me move.” She smiled as she remembered the various offers. It was a bit like one of those perfect movies of the perfect town — she always tried to find a catch to these generous offers, but people in Alinta Bay seemed genuinely nice.

Leaning back as she took a bite of her sandwich, she remembered one of the parents in particular.

A boy’s father.

Sunlight poured in through the front windows, brightly illuminating the room. The bookshelf in the corner looked perfect, albeit empty. Again, her gaze moved across the room and down the hall. Her house was filled with boxes in every available spot. Random checks told her that all her belongings were accounted for. But how she had accumulated so much stuff over only a few years living away from her parents was beyond her.

Harry’s words pulled her back from her thoughts. “You’re like your mother. Nothing gets thrown away.”

Chocking back a small laugh, she met her father’s gaze as she placed her arm around her mother. “Apparently, I inherited your blue eyes, the unruly, stubborn black hair, my wit, and not to mention the freckles. About time I find a gene I have from Mum.”

Logan’s heart broke seeing his son in so much pain, and he wished there was a simple solution to help him.

“I’ll put the kettle on,” he heard Graham saying and turned to follow everyone into the kitchen.

Graham’s wife, Lisa, had returned with some bread for sandwiches, and they sat at the table as Graham organised a few snacks for everyone. With Nick on his lap, Harrison retold what had happened over the previous days. Logan watched Kristen move restlessly on her chair, repeatedly taking deep breaths to settle her emotions he guessed.

His son’s voice was tired when he asked, “Was he in pain?”

Harrison shook his head. “Not sure about the actual heart attack, but once he was in hospital, he simply closed his eyes and fell asleep peacefully.”

Nick’s arms around his neck tightened, and Logan knew his son wanted to cry some more but was out of tears. Lethargy had kicked in.

Even though they’d been quiet, their presence must’ve woken his mother, and she appeared in the hall. Taken aback by her swollen face and puffy eyes, it was difficult for Logan not to feel or show his own anguish. With only a few steps, he was in front of her and took her in his arms, giving her the comfort she needed, and, at the same time, drawing comfort from her.

“So glad you’re home,” Maureen whispered into his chest, but before he was able to reply, Nick squeezed between them.

“Nan?”

She pulled out of her son’s embrace and kneeled to take her grandson in her arms. “Oh, darling. I’m so sorry.”

“Is he really gone?” the boy wanted to know.

She ran her hand down his face. “I’m afraid so.”

Nick wept even more if that was possible. “I miss him.”

“We all do.”

Logan’s heart broke seeing his son in so much pain, and he wished there was a simple solution to help him.

It tore Logan apart, the ache to see his son in so much pain, but still remembering his manners.

Raking a hand through his hair, Harrison knelt in front of him, his voice equally shaky. “Thanks, buddy. Your grandpa made me promise to tell you how much he loved you. He wants you not to be sad for too long, because he thinks life is too short to be sad. And even though you can’t see him, he’ll always be around.”

Nick threw his arms around Harrison and cried uncontrollably, taking a long moment to respond. “I promise.”

Harrison picked him up. “Let’s head inside.”

Logan took Kristen’s hand, and as they walked past Graham, she took her uncle’s hand — and linked together they walked into the house.

An eerie feeling overcame Logan once he was inside. Something within him expected his father to appear from the bedroom, or sit in the lounge room, or even offer him a coffee from the kitchen.

But it was quiet. There was only the noise of Harrison and Nick in front of him, and Kristen and Graham next to him.

Blinking a couple of times to hold back the tears, he squeezed Kristen’s hand a little for comfort.

Hi everyone ♥

I’m Ba-ack! We’ve just returned from a nice break in Europe, visiting my family and travelling Norway. Definitely have many new ideas for another book.

Today’s Snippet

He’d always been close to them, and Harrison was more like a brother to him and Kristen than a cousin.

“How are you holding up?” Graham’s voice was barely above a whisper.

With a lift of his shoulder, he let Logan know that he wasn’t sure, yet. It must’ve been hard for him losing his brother at such a young age.

“How’s Mum?”

“She’s inside having a nap. The doctor’s given her some medication. My mum’s gone to the shop to get some bread,” Harrison explained.

Logan walked over to Kristen, placed his arm around her shoulder, and brushed her forehead with a kiss.

“How are you, pumpkin?”

She moved around to look at him, and a heaviness settled on his chest, seeing the signs of her struggles. Her eyes reflected her pain for everyone to see. He wiped a tear from her red face, which was also blotchy and swollen. Harrison hadn’t exaggerated when he’d told him she took it hard. He understood her pain. It broke his heart; he knew what she was going through.

She shook her head but didn’t speak. He gave her a moment, knowing only a few, if any words could describe what she was feeling.

Nick, still in her embrace, sobbed against her chest. “Is he really dead?”

Kristen hugged him even tighter as more tears flowed down her face. “Yes, honey. I’m afraid he is.”

Harrison joined them. “How about we head inside?”

Nick moved out of Kristen’s embrace and looked at Harrison, trying hard to control his sobs. “Thank you for trying to help Grandpa when he had the heart attack.”
