He’d asked the taxi driver to get him to the motorhome company in Hawthorne. His mouth curved at the idea of having flown over the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, without the ‘e’, twenty-four hours earlier, only to end up in a place called Hawthorne again. The drive was surprisingly short and pleasant. The traffic he had expected wasn’t there, but nonetheless he stared in amazement at the amount of lanes on the freeway. There were four on each side. And they still had traffic jams! His tired eyes took in the surroundings, the suburbs, the houses, and the many things that were so similar to Australia — yet so different.
Once he arrived at the rental place, he went through the procedure of checking the motorhome, filling out papers, getting acquainted with the steering wheel on the left side instead of the right, and adding the first stop to the GPS.
Following the GPS wasn’t all that hard, and Jared made it out of Los Angeles alive and in one piece. Somewhere close to San Bernardino, he stopped to stock up for food and then made his way up through the San Bernardino National Forest towards Vegas. It was going to be a long drive on the first day, but he was sure he’d make it. He tilted his head, working a kink out of his neck and occasionally rubbed the tiredness out of his eyes with the palm of his hand, but the excitement of driving through America for four weeks in the little motorhome kept him wide-awake in anticipation.
Jared Fraser, a landscape business owner in Hobart, Australia, sets out for a holiday to the USA to travel along the Route 66 in a motorhome. Looking forward to his first holiday overseas, he’s excited as he prepares himself for the journey. But little could’ve prepared him for crossing paths with a beautiful hitchhiker.
Will he be able to put his past aside and grab onto happiness?
Ivy Bennett thought leaving her boyfriend would be the hard part. It doesn’t take long to figure out how wrong she was. As she struggles with making a new start in her life, the last person she expects to lead her to happiness is a laid-back Australian on vacation.
But she will have to say goodbye again. And not only to Jared.

“Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this wonderful book and fall in love.” (5 star review)
4 stars – NEW BEGINNINGS is a very emotional read, one that is heartwarming as well as heart wrenching. It gives you hope in the act of human kindness and that good things do happen to good people. I highly recommend this book.

Gee, what interesting people might he meet???
One very special one …. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Kris
I hope jet lag doesn’t hit him while driving!
Let’s hope indeed 😉 thanks Ed.
I’ve traveled that road. I lived in San Diego for many years and had family in Vegas. We sometimes went to LA first and then up. Beautiful country! I’m sure the wildfires have done terrible things to it out there.
Oh, yes, we’ve heard about the wildfires. Terrible thing. And, yes, we enjoyed the drive, too, but it was loooooong 🙂
I think you’ve done a great job capturing the spirit of freedom that comes with a driving trip. Actually, we did something like this in New Zealand many years ago, renting a camper van for two weeks and exploring both the north and south islands. Fantastic!
I’m glad you liked it, Lisabet. We travelled around NZ as well – a couple of times. Often, when life gets a bit overwhelming, I feel like swapping my house for a motorhome and just travel … I love it.
