Today’s Snippet

He picked up the phone again and dialled the familiar number. His mother answered the call almost immediately.

“Hi, Mum.”

“Hello darling. How are you?”

He leaned further into the uncomfortable couch and closed his eyes, enjoying the sound of his mother’s voice. It hadn’t been easy for his parents easy to hear about his sudden bad health, but what worried them more was that he’d packed up and drove off into the unknown.

“I’ve arrived in Victoria. There’s a small place along the Great Ocean Road. Cosy and nice.”

His mother giggled. “And I suppose you’ve been surfing there, too.”

She knew him well. The house he’d grown up in was on a property next to the beach. The surf was his second home. “I haven’t, yet, but I can’t wait. It’s one of the best locations for surfing.”

Bang!

Jon jerked and his eyes flew wide open, only to stare into the darkness. There was more rumbling in the distance.

“Jonny, are you okay?”

“Mum, I call you back. I’m okay, but lightning has plunged us into darkness.” He chuckled. “It’s gonna be an interesting night.”

“You always had a knack for adventure. Stay safe, love.”

The idea that his mother thought of him as adventurous put a smile on his lips. Yes, he and his friends had always been out surfing and exploring. He couldn’t stand boring. He disconnected the call and turned on the torch, walking over to the window. The world was dark as abyss, until lightning brightened up the sky in the near distance. It was quite a spectacle, followed by more rumbling, fortunately a bit further away as well.

He turned and stared at the connecting door. Should he check on Piper?

I hope you’re still enjoying Piper and Jon’s story. Here’s another little teaser.

Today’s Snippet

Jon had no idea what made him invite Piper for breakfast. First of all, it wasn’t his favourite meal at the best of times, but more importantly, bacon and eggs were on his ‘no-no’ list of foods to eat since his heart attack. How he hated the word. But truth be told, he’d needed the wake-up call and life hadn’t been all that bad since. Yes, Paula had left him, but nowadays he was more certain each day that her leaving was a good thing, too. For him definitely. The doubts whether she’d loved him more for his money and social status than himself grew with each passing day.

His mind wandered back to Piper. What was her story? Why the tears? Would he find out? In a twisted sense, he was looking forward to having breakfast with her, even if it was just for having a conversation for longer than five minutes. He’d enjoyed his solitude over the last few months with only the occasional phone calls to family and friends, but Piper had stirred something in him making him crave for some company. Her company.

“Get some rest and we’ll catch up tomorrow afternoon.”

Piper disconnected the call and looked towards the door. Why was she looking forward to the breakfast the next day? Hadn’t she learnt her lesson from her marriage with Darren, who so ungraciously left her, leaving her with nothing.

Letting out a soft sigh, she decided not to go to the breakfast. It was more important to focus on moving forward and not flirt with strange men … as nice as they might be.

The decision didn’t make her feel better, despite it being the right thing to do, and with her shoulders slouched, Piper went to the small bedroom, undressed, and returned to bed.

Jon’s image constantly on the forefront of her mind.

Had she imagined the amusement in his voice?

“I…I meant … as in … it’s no hassle, as in I’m grateful you let me stay here. I can’t expect you to keep the other side empty because of …” She had no idea whether she was making it worse with stuttering some nonsense. What would he think of her? That she was already hooking up with another man? “Anyway,” she added in barely more than a whisper. “Thanks for checking in on me. I really appreciate it.”

“Hey Piper? You’ll get through this. I’m sure of it. There are better times ahead.”

She closed her eyes, holding back the tears. Yes, she deserved some better times. And not just better times, but good times. The image of her neighbour popped into her mind and a smile tugged at her lips.

“I live in hope,” she replied, as she thought of her breakfast invitation in the morning.

“Get some rest and we’ll catch up tomorrow afternoon.”

On the other hand, a little flirt wouldn’t hurt and hopefully distract her from her misery, even if just for a little while.

The buzzing of her phone pulled her out of her reverie. She checked the ID and with a hesitant smile answered the call.

“Harrison. How are you?”

“I’m sorry for calling so late. It’s been … never mind. Just wanted to see that you’re all right.” He paused for a moment and asked quietly, “Are you?”

A mix of emotions overwhelmed her. The anger and sadness of having lost everything sat deep within her. Excitement and apprehension about breakfast with Jon trickled through her. And now a whisper of warmth cascaded through her hearing Harrison’s concerned voice. She might have lost everything, but she still had people caring for her.

“I’m fine,” she replied. “Thank you for letting me stay at your cabin. I really appreciate it.”

“I heard the other side has been occupied by a tourist. I’m sorry about it.”

“No,” she responded louder than intended. “No, don’t’ apologise. That’s fine. He’s quiet and courteous. No stress at all.”

Shit, had she just said he?

“Okay. Clearly it’s no hassle.”

Last line from the previous snippet:
“That’d be lovely.” She heard her own words. “I look forward to it.”
“Me too,” he replied just above a whisper with a smile lingering on his lips.
And she thought the messages had kept her awake… that smile did all sorts of things to her.
She let out a huff as she ambled back to her cabin. How the hell could she even think of another man as being attractive after what Cameron had put her through. She lost everything. Her money. Her house. Her life. Thanks to him, she had to live in a small cabin. Not only that, it was a shared accommodation on top of that. Although, she wouldn’t complain about her neighbour.
Actually, yes she would, because she didn’t want to think of a male person to be attractive, handsome, or even sexy.
Good Lord her neighbour was sexy. And she was going to have breakfast with him.
Piper shoved the door open with more force than intended and slammed it shut behind herself with equal strength. Clearly, she hadn’t learnt her lesson.
No breakfast with Jon.

“I’m not sure what I expected,” he finally admitted.

Piper moved a strand of hair from her face. “Sorry, I know it’s late. I couldn’t sleep. And … you know … the messages …”

He choked back a soft chuckle. “They were meant to amuse you a little, not to give you sleepless nights.”

“They did. As in, they did amuse me.” She lifted her shoulder in a subtle shrug. “Now I’m here to say thanks. I can’t remember anybody ever care in that way.”

Jon scratched the back of his neck. “Look, I’d like to offer you to—”

“No,” she countered and added with a smile. “No, I really just wanted to say thanks—”

“How about breakfast tomorrow morning. In the camp kitchen. My treat. Bacon and eggs.”

Heat trickled through her as she contemplated his offer. After all, she didn’t know him, only that he’d cared enough to take his time to put a smile on her face with his small notes. She met his gaze as he waited for an answer. Was he not used to wait? He looked sexy enough to have any woman.

“That’d be lovely.” She heard her own words. “I look forward to it.”

Now that Piper was standing in front of her neighbour, a very handsome neighbour none-the-less, to talk to him in person suddenly didn’t seem like a good idea anymore. But she hadn’t been able to go asleep. She’d been tossing and turning in bed, the small messages playing havoc in her mind. In the end, she’d decided to walker over instead of writing another note.

Jon wasn’t at all what she’d imagined. His warm chocolate brown eyes took her in. Was he disappointed in what he saw? More doubt crept up in her. She’d introduced herself. Wasn’t it now his turn to say something? He didn’t. He just stood there, wearing only some track pants, which hung very low on his incredibly sexy body, and a worn-out blue t-shirt with Perth printed right across the chest.

She bit her lip and blew out a breath. “My apologies—”

He held up his hand. “No, don’t be. I—”

“Expected another message?”

That slow smile that spread across his face, was about the sexiest thing she’d seen in a long time.

Today’s Snippet

Lexie blew out a shaky breath, and Jesse wished he could do something to help.

“Zoe, we should go. The joey needs to be cared for and the quicker we let the ranger take it to the shelter, the better its chances are of survival.”

“Can we follow him?”

Uncomfortable with the situation in front of him, Jesse got out of the car, and opened the door for Lexie before walking around to do the same for Zoe. Despite being a little amused by the conversation that was going on inside the car, he didn’t envy Lexie for her battle with her daughter.

Carefully, he lifted the joey off the girl’s lap and said, “Ladies, you will need to continue this discussion in your car, because I have to take the fella to the shelter. As in quickly.”

His mouth edged up when both females released a big huff as they exited the car.

“Thanks again,” Lexie said quickly as she tried to rush after her daughter who was stomping across the car park. There was nothing he could do. Unsure of how long the joey had been without food, he needed to make him his priority. He re-wrapped the small animal into the blanket again and placed him on the passenger seat then he returned to the driver’s side. He was about to shut the car door when he heard Zoe.
