Her face lightened straight away. “She was lovely — as you know. I don’t think it took her more than twenty-four hours until she came to visit me with a big basket full of scones after I’d moved in.”

“When did you move in?”

“Why?”

She looked up at him, a blank expression on her face as if she didn’t know what he meant with the question.

“Usually, people move here when they retire. Or families come here for a tree change. What about you?”

She wasn’t more forthcoming with her next answer either. “Tree change.”

“Single, I assume, and you move to this forsaken town for a tree change?”

“It’s beautiful here,” she explained. “I always wanted to live near the beach, and I love sitting on the front deck staring across the water. It makes me content.”

He considered her to be in her late twenties. Early thirties at the very most. Single. Well, as far as he knew. The fact that she’d moved to a small town, away from the main cities, was still a puzzle.

He stepped into the kitchen and placed the bags onto the bench. First, though, he tried to get the old radio going before unpacking all the plastic bags. As he gathered the frying pan and started cooking the bacon and eggs, he thought of the girl behind the checkout. No, she wasn’t his type, but he thought he remembered her from school. Lauren was her name. Or Laura? Leila? She’d been one of the few girls at school who’d been very kind to him. At least some of the time. He rubbed his chest to ease the pain of a stabbing sensation while reminiscing his younger years emerged again. He’d been tempted to say hello but wanted to keep his presence in town quiet for a little while longer.

“Hi.”

His head jerked up to look at Molly. Her heavy makeup didn’t go with her casual clothes. Was she hiding something? Was it to cover the scar? But why?

“Thanks again for letting me stay here. I do appreciate it.”

His mouth pulled into a smile. “No problems at all.” He served up two plates and placed them on the table where Molly had already laid out some cutlery. As they sat, he inquired, “Tell me a bit about Grandma.”

The current situation, however, was a necessity, and he’d make sure to see it that way. Not that he was interested in her anyway. He liked his women blonde and tall.

Yet, something about Molly intrigued him, drew him in, and it bugged the hell out of him that he wasn’t able to figure out what it was.

“Molly?”

Her head popped around the corner from his old bedroom, looking at him. “I’m sorry, but I couldn’t stand the smell in the house much longer.”

He nodded. “No problems. I’ll be in the kitchen starting the breakfast.” Then paused for a moment. “Will you take that room?”

A worried expression spread across her face. “Will that be okay?”

He choked back a chuckle. “Yup. I’m not that eager to move back into my old bedroom. I’ll take Grandma’s craft room.”

“What about the master bedroom?”

“There’s no way in hell I’ll sleep in the same bed as my grandmother did for over half a century.”

He heard her laugh as he disappeared into the kitchen.

“She bought the bed only a few months ago,” she shouted from down the hall.

Still didn’t convince him. The thought of staying in his grandmother’s room, whether it would be the old or a new bed, gave him hives.

Sighing, he reminded himself he’d left that chapter of his life behind and as he closed the door on his painful thoughts, he was thankful something else shifted his attention. Something that put a smile on his lips.

Pulled by curiosity, he listened to the noise from the back of the house — Molly humming quietly to some pop song.

It hit home with him that he’d never shared a house with a woman. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger wondering why he’d suggested the arrangement. There was no shortage of women in his life. Once the braces had come off when he’d been seventeen, it’d been another year before he’d left for the U.S. and another six months before he’d had his eyes fixed surgically. And after that, he had received lots of female attention.

And he’d never regretted it. He’d loved the women, and they loved him, but never did he let them come in or stay at his house. A relationship was not on his agenda. And he liked it that way. There’d been too many women in his life who had either disappointed him or he had been disheartened by them — mainly his mother and grandmother. He had no intentions of dealing with that stuff again. He listened again

But had he? Of course he hadn’t. Otherwise being in the house with an attractive woman would excite him instead of causing his emotions to go haywire. Rememberinghow often he’d come home from school in tears because of all the nasty things he’d been told, not coping with the teasing by the other children, the degrading by the teachers, or the laughter from the girls made his stomach churn. He’d been the ugly kid in the neighbourhood. And he’d hated it.

Shit!

He didn’t want to relive his past, he wanted to forget about the braces and thick glasses, but also the fact that he’d lived with his grandmother because his mother had run off with some French guy and he had no idea about his father.

Half an hour later, he’d conquered the traffic in Alinta Bay, found the local grocery store, and bought what he needed for the next few days. As much as he managed driving on the left side of the road, his ability to convert back as a pedestrian was obviously not as easy. Occasionally, he stepped in front of an oncoming car, not realising he was looking the wrong way. He shook his head and had a little chuckle.

Back in his grandmother’s house, Noah hadn’t even closed the door when a subtle sound echoed through the hallway telling him Molly had returned. Something inside him stirred. He was glad she’d accepted his offer to stay here, but he knew it’d also been selfish. The idea of being alone in this old house didn’t sit well. But why? Solitude was his best friend. Was he hoping to find out a bit more about his grandma? A chill went down his spine when memories of his childhood flooded him. The lump in his throat made it hard for him to breathe.

Damn you all, I have moved on.

He returned to his grandmother’s house, a pang of pain rippling through him when he stepped into the kitchen, expecting to see her. For so long, he’d wanted to ask her to come and visit him. She would’ve loved his kitchen, which was small and, in many ways, so old-fashioned, but also in so many ways what she would’ve liked. The wood-burning stove with the old kettle on it. The pots and pans hanging above on little hooks. Wiping a tear, he opened the fridge door and decided it was time for a little visit to the shop down the road.

“My cooking is basic but good.”

He held out his hand. “Deal?”

Letting out a soft laugh, she looked past him and into the distance before she finally took his hand. “Deal.”

“Perfect. I really appreciate it.”

He turned to leave when her question stopped him. “How good of a carpenter are you?”

He winked. “The best you can get, honey.”

Her snort didn’t get past him as she closed the door, but he wasn’t lying. Even though he was flying planes to make a living nowadays, it was carpentry that he loved. When he’d moved to Seward a few years back, he’d spent all his spare time building his own house. A rustic, two story log cabin just outside of town. It’d not only given him something to do, but also kept him busy with what he loved most — carpentry. The house was his pride. He’d been able to add most of his ideas, especially the main fireplace downstairs. During the long winter days, he loved sitting in front of it with a beer and watching a good movie. Or having friends over for a basketball game. His upstairs bedroom had a balcony accessible through French doors overlooking the water — his favourite place during summer.

“Fifty hours?”

He hitched a shoulder. “I was stuck in bad weather up north.”

It was obvious she was contemplating his words, but he wasn’t sure why.

“How about you move back in until your house is fixed up?” He removed his hand from the door and put on a big smile. “If you come over in about an hour, I’ll even make you a nice breakfast. You like bacon and eggs, right?”

The stunned look on her face told him everything. She wasn’t sure how to take the 180-degree change from last night. He rubbed his face with both hands before he explained again, “I’m honestly sorry. Coming home wasn’t easy, especially not with Grandma gone. Please, let’s try again. There’s obviously a reason that Grandma’s lawyer trusted you with the keys, so I do too.” He wrinkled his nose at the smell. “And, according to the little whiff I’m getting here, I think you do need to stay somewhere else.”

She pressed her lips together before a small smile spread across her face. “I won’t be much trouble, but I work from home, so I’ll be around a bit.”

He nodded. “No problems at all. I have a few things to get organised.” About to leave, he paused for a moment, contemplating his words. “By any chance—” He paused. “How well do you cook? I’m a carpenter by trade and was wondering if I can help fix your house up and maybe you could make me some dinners.”

She smiled, and damn if that smile didn’t do something to his groin.

They’re opposites in many ways, but they might just be a perfect match.
At first glance, Molly and Noah have little in common. He craves solitude, while she’s spent her life putting others first. He’s haunted by his own past, and she’s trying to rebuild from hers. But as they spend more time together, something shifts. Their differences become less like barriers and more like the pieces of a puzzle falling into place.

Excerpt 1

The knock was louder this time accompanied by muffled shouting.

Noah?

She headed towards the front and opened the door where she found him standing.

With his travel bag.

Slowly, she lifted her brows questioningly at him.

“I need a place to sleep,” he explained.

Staring at him, she wasn’t able to connect all the dots. “Excuse me?”

“Time to return the favour, honey.” He stepped closer. “My mother has moved in and there’s no way I’ll stay in the same house as her.”

Still lost for words, she gazed at him as he walked right past her towards the other end of the house.

“Make yourself at home,” she whispered more to herself than to him.

“Thanks.” He choked back a chuckle, obviously aware of what she’d said. “I promise you, I’ll get a flight as soon as possible and won’t bother you much.” Then he looked over his shoulder, meeting her gaze. “Unless you prefer me to get a hotel room.”

She bit her lip, contemplating the implications this move was going to have. “No. No. It’s okay. Of course it is.”

He frowned. “Are you sure?”

Molly stepped closer to him and tugged a strand of hair behind her ear. “Yes, I’m a hundred percent sure. Just a little surprised, is all.” She waved her hand towards the two bedrooms at the back of the house. “You know the place. Take your stuff to the spare room at the back. I was about to have a cup of tea in the back yard. Would you like to join me?”

A smile curled his lips. “Got something stronger for me?”

Lifting a shoulder, she walked past him and into the kitchen. “I might still have a beer, but I’m not sure.”

Ten minutes later, they sat under a tree in the back corner of her yard.

“Cheers.” He lifted the bottle to his lips and took a long pull.

Molly smiled and had a sip of her tea as well. Then she said, “Your grandmother missed your mother and was always hoping for her to return.”

Even without looking at him, she had a fair idea how hard this was for him.

“So did I.”

“Didn’t you sometimes have the urge to search for her?”

“Nope.”

“Would you like me to shut up?”

He choked back a chuckle. “Yes.”

“This is the most interesting conversation I’ve been having in weeks, if not months.”

Wiping the froth of the beer from his top lip, he looked into the distance. “I’m sorry. I’m letting out my frustration at the wrong person.”

Unsure how to reply, Molly remained silent.

“As a kid I waited every day for my mother to return home. Grandma told me she was on holidays in a country far away and it took a long time to travel from here to there and back.” He rested his arms on his knees and stared at his feet. “Well, we both know the end of the story, don’t we?”

“The end hasn’t been written, yet.”

He cocked a brow when he met her gaze.

“She’s come here–”

“Too late.”

“Too late for what?”

Taking a deep breath, he stood and finished the rest of the beer in one swig.

“I understand you’re angry with her–”

“Molly.” He reached for her hand, trying hard to curb the growing frustration within him. “I like your company. I like you. However, the last thing I want is to have some psychology talk from you.”

She lowered her head. “Fair enough. I’m sorry.”

Shaking his head, he quickly said, “Don’t be. I know you mean well.”

Aware of his touch, she closed her eyes concentrating on Ben’s image, but the only thing her mind was registering was Noah’s hand, the warm skin against her palm, and his fingers pressing against hers ever so softly. She pulled her hand back when he lifted his to cup her face before he tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. The tips of his fingers on her neck sent a tingle down her spine. There was a moment when he paused before brushing his lips across hers. The scent his aftershave and the heat radiating from his body made her want to put her arms around his neck.

But she didn’t.

Not even when he grazed her lips with his tongue, despite wishing every inch of her body was touching his.

But she moved away, arguing with herself whether she was kissing him or wishing it was Ben.

She met his gaze, about to apologise when his phone rang.

He checked the ID. “I’m sorry. I think I should take this.”
