FLY WITH ME

This is Tiffany’s story, who receives a call from the police one morning forcing her to deal with a chapter from her past, which she is unhappy to revisit. When she calls her friend Dylan, it’s Mat from New Zealand she ends up talking to.

This is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

Once they were buckled up and on the road, Dylan asked, “Have you had any contact with him since?” [Josh]

“No way. Once bitten, twice shy. Isn’t that what they say?” She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sat straight. “Okay, distract me a bit and tell me about Mat.”

He shook his head. “Sounds like love at first sight. Or hear I suppose.”

“Oh my god no, but I’m curious about the guy who answers your phone.”

He chuckled. “Mat lived across the road from us in Sydney,” he explained with a shrug. “His dad had been a famous rugby player in New Zealand. The family moved to Sydney where his dad did some coaching. None of them really settled, though. Mat and I stayed in contact since. Liam and I visited him a couple of times. I’m hoping to invest in his new business venture. That’s why he’s here.”

“What kind of business?”

Dylan parked and turned to look at her. “How about a barbeque at our place tomorrow night? I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to tell you all about his little barn in the middle of nowhere.”

“Barn?”

He laughed. “He bought the thing a few years back and turned it into one mighty great house. Shame he’s moving back to Queenstown.”

They got out of the car and walked towards the police station entrance. A sudden rush of anxiety swept through her, leaving her hands cold and her heart pounding rapidly.

Taking her hand, Dylan said, “You’ll be right. I’m sure there’s a simple explanation to it.”

She let out a puff of air. “With Josh being dead and the police ending up at my doorstep, I doubt the explanation is simple.”

I hope you get hooked by this Snippet

Today’s hook

Sophie stared at the house. With tears stinging behind her eyelids, she slowly turned around and helped Mia out of the car. The little girl looked delicate and breakable in the unfamiliar environment, even though she wasn’t anywhere near fragile.

Very clever for her age, Mia had seen and gone through a lot, but handled most situations with trust and belief. Sophie wasn’t sure whether that was a good thing or not. Her younger sister undoubtedly had their mother’s looks, with the long, straight blond hair, her bright grey-green eyes, and pale skin. But deep inside, there was a survivor instinct as well. Something she sometimes thought their mother might have lacked.

“Is this our new home, Sophie?” her sister asked quietly.

Hesitantly, she nodded. “Yes, sweetie, I hope so.”

Mark took the suitcase from the boot of his car and walked towards the house, opened the gate, and placed the girls’ belongings next to the fence. He turned, and Sophie made no effort at hiding the struggle with emotions.

“That’s it. This is Forty-Six Chestnut Avenue,” he told them.

The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.Twenty-two-year-old

Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?

5star Review:

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a
feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!

When she heard a knock at the front door, she flinched and cursed that the unknown situation grated so much on her nerves.

Opening the door for Dylan, she gave him a grateful smile. As usual, he looked stunning with his suntanned face, his light green eyes, and just a shadow of a beard. His Irish red hair was a bit longer nowadays, which was most likely the current fashion, and Tiffany liked it. It gave him a sexier, yet mature look. Their friendship had grown even closer after her trouble with Josh the previous year. He and Liam had been there for her when the police had knocked on her door and taken her to the station. It had been the worst period in her life. Both men had been by her side, though, caring for her and guiding her through the labyrinth of a legal nightmare.

He probably knew how anxious she was.

“Hi Tiff,” he said as he placed a kiss on her cheek. “Sorry, we’ve got to rush a bit. Jessi and I have an appointment in the afternoon.”

“Your girlfriend could show some—”

He held up his hand and a sly grin appeared on his face. “Let’s say we have a situation where I want to keep her stress levels as low as possible.”

She froze and turned to him as a slow smile spread across her face. “Are you telling me there’s going to be a little Dylan junior?”

“I’m telling you we’re having an appointment and that we’ve got to hurry along a bit.”

“How exciting.” Tiffany grabbed her keys, locked the door, and followed him to his car.

“Your problem can’t be too bad,” Dylan replied with a hint of sarcasm.
Ignoring his comment, she said, “The police was here asking about Josh.”
Silence hung in the air before he replied, “Shit. No wonder I’ve had so many missed calls.”
“Not to mention the amount of time I tried to get hold of you on your landline. So who the hell is this guy and why did he answer your phone?”
“First things first, tell me about the police.”
Tiffany headed into the lounge room and sat down on the couch. “They were here this morning wanting to know about Josh.”
“Why?”
She shrugged, but quickly added, “How the hell would I know.”
Her friend’s sigh told her frustration grew within him, so she told him about the visit earlier in the day in every detail. She looked around the lounge room as she spoke, taking in the brightly painted walls, the small, but rustic fireplace, her sofa and matching armchairs, and the bookshelves, packed with books and photos.
“I’m sorry to bother you with this but I don’t know where else to go. Mum and Dad will worry themselves sick and won’t be any use. And Liam will go berserk when he finds out the police came to the house again. I’m still glad he didn’t get locked up when he pushed the officer last year. And there’s also the fact that Mel’s stress-o-meter is supposed to stay below zero.”
There was silence at the other end of the line and a smile tugged at Tiffany’s mouth, assuming he got her hint about Liam’s wife.
“Run that by me again?” he finally asked.
“Focus, Dylan. Focus. I need your help.” Her smile turned into a grin despite anxiety spreading through her.

I hope you get hooked by this Snippet

Today’s hook

drive through Hobart was mostly quiet as Sophie and Mia took in the scenery. It was certainly a hilly place, and Mt. Wellington with its 1270 meters in height, seemed to overlook every little part of this waterfront capital. It was definitely a different atmosphere from Sydney. They drove along the busy streets and, considering how small the town was, the car ride seemed to last forever.

Mr. O’Connor cleared his throat. “So what are the suitcases all about?”

Taken by surprise by the sudden start of a conversation, Sophie looked up and gazed back at him through the mirror. She wondered how old he might be. Even though Mr. O’Connor was dressed up neatly in a grey suit with a matching tie, his tousled blond hair gave him a casual look. But then her gaze drifted down to Mia’s hand clasping hers and resting in the younger girl’s lap.

“Just making conversation,” he clarified with a shrug of his right shoulder as if he knew what she was thinking.

He checked the traffic as he moved into another lane, but their gaze met again in the mirror. His expression told her that he was still waiting for an answer.

“I’ve already told you. Considering what we’ve inherited, we brought along everything.”

There was this churning in her stomach, and she wasn’t sure what it was all about. It was hard to pinpoint. Anxiousness probably. At least a little. It was a strange city to her, and here she was in a stranger’s car, being driven to an unknown location.

And nervousness.

Yes, he most certainly made her nervous. At least a bit, because Sophie found him very attractive and his sudden need to talk surprised her.

“Parents?”

“Anybody you can call?”
His voice was soothing, and when Tiffany met his eyes through the screen door, she noticed something in his eyes which conveyed trust. There was a need inside her to trust him. So much, but every fibre in her told her to not open the door. Never again would she let the police take her to the station and treat her like a criminal.
She bit her lip again, desperately trying to figure out whom to call, when she said, “My brother.”
Harris nodded. “Thomas Terrill was charged with possession of drugs last year. You are noted as a witness.” He paused, checked his little notepad, and continued. “He’s also known as Josh Ford.”
Leaning her head against the door, Tiffany took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Are you okay, Miss Brooks?” Harris asked.
“Please open the door,” Jones requested.
Holding up her hand, she replied, “I haven’t seen him since then. I have nothing to do with whatever trouble he’s in.” Tears started to trickle down her cheeks, and she took another two deep breaths before standing straight to meet Harris’ gaze. He searched her eyes before he assented with a nod and held up a business card.
