Happy Wednesday everyone.
This is my latest release
DEFYING RULES
which was released on 17 March 2020.
I hope you’ll enjoy today’s “hook”.

Today’s Hook:

Somewhere, wherever the place was where dead people went after leaving.
“Dad?”
“Yes, mate?”
“It’s going to be weird going home without Grandpa being there.”
Pain shot through Logan. “Yes, it will be.” Blinking away threatening tears as the scenery sped past, he was aware of the gravity of his words. “But remember, we talked about it. Grandpa’s in a good place. And we still have Nan. She needs us, right? Harrison’s parents are staying with her at the moment, too.”
When Nick didn’t reply, Logan checked the mirror again to find his son staring out the window, most likely contemplating his father’s reply.

BLURB:

Sometimes one has to break rules in order to find happiness…

Widower Logan Hendrix is puzzled by the recent series of small crimes against his son’s new teacher. It’s a mystery to him, and he offers her his help. There’s an instant attraction, and Logan wants to take their parent/teacher relationship to a more personal level.

It doesn’t take Addison Ryker long to fall in love with Alinta Bay, the small town she’s moved to for her new teaching position at the local primary school. Her newfound haven is threatened, however, when her house is broken into and she is relying on the unbelievably stubborn but very sexy Logan for help. Although captivated by him, Addison worries her career could be compromised, because there are rules about dating a parent.

“This blood-pumping novel will keep the reader hooked until the very end.” InD’tale Magazine

“Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this wonderful book and fall in love.” (5 star review)

Mat is a sexy, tattooed New Zealander with a strong sense of family and duty and Tiffany is a woman with a past that continues to haunt her. Can Mat help her overcome her demons and move on with the next phase of her life? Come for the romance and stay for the breathtaking scenery. (5 star review)

Today’s Hook:

The tears trickled down his cheeks now, his chest heaving as he cried silently. “Yes,” he commented on his cousin’s statement in a whisper, his voice almost breaking. “I thought she wouldn’t cope well. They’d always been close.”
Harrison was silent.
“Give me twenty minutes and I’ll meet you at Mum’s.”
“Sounds good. I’ll bring Kristen as well.”
As soon as he turned off the phone, a little moan from the back told him that Nick was stirring and waking.
Logan looked at the rear-view mirror. “We’re almost home, mate.”
Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, Nick sat up and scanned the area out of the window, probably to figure out where they were.
“We’re heading straight to—” Logan broke off; he’d been going to say Grandpa.
“Nan. Auntie Kristen and Harrison will be there. Are you hungry?”
The boy shook his head. That worried Logan, because his son hadn’t eaten anything decent for the whole day. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Nick in the mirror looking up towards the ceiling, possibly throwing around all the questions he had regarding his grandpa’s heart attack the previous year and his recent death. It’d been something they’d discussed a lot while driving along the roads in Tasmania and it’d been a challenge for Logan to explain how the heart worked and why Grandpa had suffered a heart attack in the first place, explaining what death was and what happened afterwards. Where would people go? There were moments when Logan had wished for a second parent to share the task of clarifying the unknown, but he got through it. It helped Nick to know that Grandpa was now with his mother and Logan’s grandparents. Somewhere, wherever the place was where dead people went after leaving.

Today’s Hook:

“Logan speaking.”
“It’s Harrison.”
Another quick glance to the back told him that Nick was still asleep. It had been hard telling his son the news regarding Jon, his father, the boy’s grandfather.
He blew out a breath, readying himself for the chat with his cousin. “How is everyone?”
There was a moment of silence before Harrison spoke. “Mum’s been at your place for the last two days to be with your mum. She’s struggling. Dad is, too.”
It didn’t surprise him. His father had been close to his brother, Uncle Graham, and his mother got along really well with Auntie Lisa, her sister-in-law.
Logan released the breath he had held as he turned the corner for another near perfect view over Alinta Bay. The sight took his breath every time.
He figured his mother was well taken care of, but what about his sister? She had taken her father’s death hard, like any daughter would, but the two had had a close bond, even closer since his heart attack. Logan worried about her. “How’s Kristen?”
“She’s stayed at my place the last couple of days. Not doing very well, either.”
Logan appreciated that Harrison had stepped in to help her cope. Fighting back the urge to shed a tear, he remembered the last couple of times he had cried. He’d shed a few the first time he’d held his son in his arms. Scared and excited over being a dad. But he’d cried bitterly when Kelly had died only a day later from post-operative complications. Nothing had prepared him for the loss and the void inside him. A widower already at only eighteen years. Yet, he was forced to get up every day to look after his son, care for him. His parents and his sister, Kristen, had been a great help, and little had he known, or dared to think, how wonderful fatherhood would turn out to be.

Today’s Hook:

Driving along, Logan watched the stormy clouds and focussed back onto the road as they emerged from a tunnel of trees and crossed the wooden one-lane bridge over the river delta. To the left side of the overpass two black swans glided through the water towards a handful of ducks resting on a sandbank. He considered waking Nick but decided they could come back to check on the animals another day. Ahead of him and a little to the side low shrubs covered the ground in front of the forest, and he knew that around the corner he would have a stunning view across the ocean. Born and raised in Alinta Bay, he considered it the best place to live and an even better place to raise his son.
Logan loved the view and never got enough of it. He loved the contrast of the blue ocean meeting the luscious green of the forest. The long winding road through gigantic trees was leading right into Alinta Bay. Nick usually struggled with travel sickness coming down this route, it was probably a blessing that he was asleep.
Startled by the ringing of the phone, he checked the ID and his heart sank, not ready, yet, for the conversation he was about to have.
“Logan speaking.”

Today’s Hook:

A smile tugged at Logan Hendrix’s lips when he saw his ten-year-old son Nicholas through the rear-view mirror in the back of the car. It must’ve been the most uncomfortable position, with his head leaning back against the booster seat, the neck bent into an awkward position. And yet, he envied Nick for his little snooze. It had been a bit of a rollercoaster twenty-four hours for them since receiving the bad news from home. Their drive into Hobart earlier in the morning as well as the almost one-hour-flight back to Melbourne had been draining on both — emotionally as well as physically.
They had spent ten days in Tasmania exploring the island in a motorhome. It’d been a great adventure, and Nick had loved the different scenery, the adventures, and even discovered his love for fishing.

DEFYING RULES

I’m back with another snippet of this story after spending two weeks in the wonderful country of New Zealand.

A little reminder: in the previous posts Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in. Ethan drove coincidently drove by and stopped to see how she was going. I moved forward a little to the moment he knocks at her door later that night.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

She (Addy) sighed. “Honestly, I’m fine. If anything, I’m disappointed and angry.”
He nodded, fully understanding where she was coming from. It’d probably the same thoughts he’d be having if he were in the situation. Anger and frustration at the fact that someone had intruded on his privacy.
Gently pushing away from him, she looked up and met his gaze. “Anyway, this is the spare bed. Apologies for the mess, but—”
He held up his hand. “No worries. It’ll do just fine for the night.”
“Good night,” she said before heading to her own room.
There was enough space for Ethan’s swag on the floor. It didn’t take him long to unpacked it. Then he went in search for the bathroom.
As exhausted as he was, sleep didn’t come easy. He thought of the past and the many times he’d slept in his swag in Nick’s room after a fight with Skye. Staring at the ceiling, he wondered about her. Where she was or what she was doing with her life nowadays. Did she have a family? Was she married? Did she think of Nicholas occasionally? He thought of Jack, whose ex-wife had left with their son twenty years ago. Jack had pined for his son every single day. Would Nick try to find his mother when he’d be older? Ethan wasn’t able to remember a time they’d talked of Skye. Although he felt guilty at that moment, the situation had never come up, and Nick had never shown any interest. He remembered the time his boy was in Grade 1 at school, and the class activity was to create something for Mother’s Day. The young boy had eagerly crafted a beautiful basket with toiletry items and given it to Emily. Ethan had not only been relieved, but proud as well. Proud of his son to have tackled the situation with such ease.
Despite all the thoughts going through his head, he must’ve fallen asleep after all, because the next thing he knew was, he was jolted out of sleep, woken instantly by a scream from somewhere in the house. Adrenaline shot through him as he struggled to get out of his swag.

He smiled and slipped past her into the house. Closing the door behind him, he locked the deadbolt and followed her into the back of the house. Her honey-like scent didn’t go unnoticed, and his whole body was on alert. Addison must’ve had a shower. She was barefoot, in some old grey track pants and a black T-shirt. Her black hair hung down her shoulders in damp, wavy curls.
“Have you had dinner, yet?”
He nodded. “I’ve got a boy to look after. We always eat early.”
She teased him with another one of her beautiful soft laughs. “Every time I see him outside the class he’s eating something.”
Ethan chuckled. “Yes, he’s one expensive child when it comes to food.”
For all her talk about being fine, she must’ve been terrified. It didn’t go past Ethan that she was fidgeting with her hands, since he’d come in. They stopped at the last room along the corridor, and he turned towards her.
“How are you really going?” he asked.
“Fine. Why do you keep asking me?”
Slowly, he lifted his hand to her face, letting his fingers trace over her smooth cheek. He noticed how she hesitantly leaned into his hand, so he stepped closer and gently pulled her towards him.
Addison rested her head against his chest, and Ethan instinctively wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight, moving his hand up and down her back as he listened to her breathing.
She sighed. “Honestly, I’m fine. If anything, I’m disappointed and angry.”

Fifteen minutes later, Ethan stood in front of Addison’s house and knocked at the door. He’d thought of giving her a quick call before showing up unannounced, but had forgotten in the rush of getting organised. The house was lit up like a Christmas tree, and he assumed she was home, but wasn’t a hundred percent sure. He’d be disappointed, of course, but possibly more relieved that she was with somebody.
About to knock again, he stopped midway when the door opened a fraction. Just enough for Addison to peer through the small gap. Her beautiful blue eyes seemed tired and leery.
“Ethan?”
“Can I come in?”
She blinked a couple of times and noticed his swag. “Why?”
“I appreciate your attitude to handle this on your own, but—”
“I’m fine, Ethan.”
“I know you are and I know it’s very selfish in a way, but—”
“I don’t know you.”
The corners of his mouth twitched in the attempt to hold back a smile, despite some frustration growing within him. “That’s the second time you’ve interrupted me. I want to help. Is it so hard to understand that? I feel uncomfortable with the idea that someone broke into your house, and you’re on your own.”
“For all I know you could be —”
He lifted a questioning eyebrow.
Addison let out soft laugh, and damn if that didn’t do a number on his thoughts. “I know, far-fetched, but—” She hesitated, but stepped back after a moment to let him in. “Okay, there’s a spare bed in the back room.”
