#SnippetSunday “I like your optimism.” #Romanceauthor #Sundayblog #mustread

Happy Sunday. I’m continuing with my WIP, another Alinta Bay story.
Jonah and Maddie are still stuck in the lift.
Enjoy ♥

Maddie thought about it for a beat. “I suppose it wouldn’t hurt if you’d let Maria know. She should be in the hotel waiting for me.”
“Would you have her number?”
Maddie nodded and gave him the contact details. She looked at Jonah. “What about you?”
He shook his head. “Nah, I’m fine. In all honesty, it’s not life threatening. By the time the message gets to my parents, we’re hopefully out of here.”
“I like your optimism.”
The static voice interrupted them again. “I’ll be back in about fifteen minutes. By then we should have you moving along nicely. The technicians are about to start in two minutes. Hang in there.”
Maddie raked her hands through her hair and held it at the back of her head, a small wave of anxiety washing through her. Desperate, she tried to think of something else to ask when she remembered he’d never really answered her initial question in the first place.
As she was about to sit down again, she asked, “So what is this fine specimen of a man doing for money in Taupo?”
He chuckled as he stepped closer, hopefully to sit next to her and hold her hand again.
Yet, he didn’t get the chance, when a sudden jolt yanked the lift, leaving it lopsided.

EXCERPT:

Chapter One

KATE

He clinical smell of detergent penetrates my senses and my eyes flutter open. I find myself staring at a white-tiled commercial ceiling, questioning if I am awake or asleep – though it does seem like a rather strange dream to have. I blink. The ceiling remains. My senses give my brain a nudge and it fires up but provides no answers. Brows wrinkling in confusion, I begin trying to determine what is going on.

One thing I am certain of, is that my body is sore and stiff. Muscles aching, I remain as I am, twisting my head to the right. The sun glares through a wide, steel window. From the sun’s height in the sky, I estimate it has been there some time.

A feeling of guilt settles over me. It appears sleeping in isn’t something I indulge in.

To my right, between the bed and window, is a small white cupboard and a plastic-coated armchair. Sunflowers sit in a vase on the bedside cupboard. I like sunflowers. Though at this moment, I fail to recall why.

An irritating beep-beep sound comes from my left, and I swing my eyes in that direction, lifting my head slightly. Wires litter my body and a pink cellular hospital blanket covers me. The beeping begins to make sense, along with the plastic-coated chair and wires. I am in a hospital.

A sigh escapes my lips as I resist the urge to panic. Instead, I acknowledge my dislike of hospitals. Then again, name a patient or visitor who likes them. There is that clinical smell that lingers long after you have left, and they are full of sick people. At present, I am reluctant to place myself in the ‘sick people’ category, even if my brain is screaming at me, telling me I wouldn’t be here if I was fit and well.

Tentatively, I sniff the air. This hospital does smell nicer than the ones I have stayed in and visited before. At present, I am unable to remember ever spending time in or visiting a hospital, though I’m sure I have done so.

My eyes widen and adrenalin is released into my bloodstream. Hands shaking, my breathing quickens. Panic grips me. Why can’t I remember anything? My eyes fly round the room, unseeing. What has happened to me?

If I am in a hospital, I am safe and cared for. Quantifying this fact allows reason to be heard. Though my heart still hammers, its beat is more regular than it was. My memories are in there, somewhere, I just need to find them. It’s probably the drugs they have given me, clouding and confusing my brain.

Closing my eyes, I demand that my brain starts its cognitive processing. My demand falls into a black hole of nothingness. Not giving up, I decide to think about the sunflowers, as they’d triggered a feeling of happiness. Unfortunately, this simple request is met with vacuity, and a hollow feeling takes up residence in the pit of my stomach. The only mental input I receive is that sunflowers are bright, cheery plants.

My eyes fly open and I face the frightening fact that my life is a blank.

Today’s Hook:

“I believe they’ve gone to your parents’ place.”
Rolling his eyes, Harrison lifted his hand to say thanks and left. This time his destination was his childhood home. He cursed remembering that Logan had given him a lift earlier this morning, and now he was without a car. He would get his exercise after all.
It took him a bit less than twenty minutes to walk up the hill and towards the end of the street to get to the family home he’d grown up in. His family had lived in the small house, which was situated at the very far end of the cul-de-sac since he could remember — and possibly even longer. His grandparents and their parents had already lived in the old house. It’d been one of the first houses built in Alinta Bay according to the library history books. His father, Graham, tried his best with the upkeep, but Harrison’s cousin, Logan the builder in the family, often told him it required some looking after. The window frames were in need of a new coat of paint and so was the front door, however, what the house lacked in maintenance, the yard made up for it. Lisa loved her flowers, especially the colourful rose bushes all along the front yard and daylilies along the path and fence. They were his mother’s pride and joy and looked sensational when in full bloom. Harrison looked up and saw the carport empty and assumed that his dad enjoyed the Sunday out with his friends on the fishing boat.
He knocked at the door and waited.
Silence, so he knocked again.
Unnecessary worry rushed through him.

BLURB:

Can two seemingly incompatible people who judge each other on past events be able to find some common ground?

Harrison Hendrix believes in second chances, but when it comes to Melody, he has every reason to doubt it’s possible. He’s conflicted when he sees her back in town and tries his best to see the change in her that other friends mention. Even more so when spending a night with her after being set up for a dinner date.

Life hasn’t been kind to Melody Foster, and she returns to Alinta Bay for a new beginning. Hit by tragedy again, she’s determined to live life to the fullest and with no regrets. She creates a bucket list … on which #8 the very difficult, yet extremely sexy Harrison has been included. Why does it seem he’s always around when she’s in trouble?

Maybe it’s time to take a risk and leave the past where it belongs, but will trusting their instinct be the right choice for them?

Happy Sunday. I’m continuing with my WIP, another Alinta Bay story.
Jonah and Maddie are still stuck in the lift.
Enjoy ♥

She gave him a gentle slap on his chest, his company not only giving her some comfort in this awkward, and somewhat scary situation, but she was enjoying it as well. “I’m helping Dad’s friend. She’s overseeing all the arrangements.”
“So we’re in good hands,” he said with some mirth.
“You most certainly are,” she assured him. “Taupo? So, what is this fine specimen of a man doing in … wait, north or south island?”
“North.”
The static voice from the panel startled them both, and Jonah stood instantly to reply. “We’re still coping. Some better than others.”
Maddie pulled in her lips as she looked up at him, glad to hear from the outside help, but at the same time she was a bit disappointed their conversation was distracted. Of course he was referring to her. And, yes, he was right. Even more so that he was not holding her hand anymore. She missed his body next to hers, the assurance he had radiated.
“Technicians have arrived and promised me to have you moving soon again.”
Jonah nodded towards the silver panel. “Appreciate the update. Oh, mate, could you give an update to…” He turned to her. “Anybody you need to know about current adventure?”
Eyes wide, she countered, “You call this an adventure?”
He blew out a breath. “Another ism I’ve stepped in?”
Placing her hand on the ground, she pushed herself up and stood next to him. “Not the kind of adventure I was seeking.”
His laugh was warm and intimate. “You have to come to NZ for a visit one day. Lots of adventures to have over there.”
“Excuse me,” the static voice interrupted. “Could I have your attention for just a moment?”
“Sorry,” Maddie and Jonah replied in unison.
“Who would you like me to contact?”

Today’s Hook:

“Dad said something along those lines as well.”
A grin spread across Noah’s face. “Must be true then. If you didn’t, you’d move hell on earth to get rid of her, instead you’re about to run after her.”
Harrison flipped them the finger and crossed the road without another word, walking towards his mother’s bakery. The streets weren’t busy, which wasn’t uncommon during winter in Alinta Bay with only the occasional tourist driving through.
Harrison had lived in the small coastal town in Australia all his life and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. He would often listen to Noah’s stories about living in California and Alaska, and an interest to travel stirred in him, but bottom line was, he was a small-town boy through and through, loving the local community with its advantages as well as its flaws.
With more force than intended, he pushed the door open to the bakery where John, one of his mother’s staff, greeted him from behind the counter. “How are you, Harrison?”
“All good. How are you? Is Mum around?”
“Lisa left less than five minutes ago. With Melody. She’s back in town.”
He clenched his jaw tight, John’s words sinking in like a knife. “I know.”

“Are you here for the reunion?”
She nodded.
“Attending as well?”
She shot him a humorous glare. “Do I look like I’m thirty years old?”
Jonah let out a bark of laughter. “I stepped right into the ageism trap, didn’t I?” And on another chuckle he added, “I honestly have no idea how a beautiful thirty year old woman looks like, but in all fairness I did want to add, you looked too young to be part of the reunion.”
With a giggle she responded instantly. “Liar.”
“A fine specimen of a liar, though, right?”
Blush crept up her cheeks and amusement tugged at his lips. He studied her face, studied her beautiful green eyes looking at him, the few freckles on her nose telling him he didn’t wear any or very little make up, and her light pink lips which still held a smile.
“Okay, we’ve established you’re too young to attend the reunion. Honestly I’m too scared to ask in case I overstep another –ism along the way.”
She gave him a gentle slap on his chest. “I’m helping Dad’s friend. She’s overseeing all the arrangements.”
