Hi everyone ♥

I’m continuing with Snippets from BETWEEN GOODBYE AND HELLO, the third book in the ALINTA BAY series, moving into Melody’s POV today.

If you’re a KU subscriber, please take a moment to check it out as well as the first two books in the series: “DEFYING RULES” and “TELL IT TO MY HEART”

♥ ENJOY ♥

Melody blew out a breath. Of course, she knew where he was coming from, but she’d hoped he would understand just as his mother had. Understood that she knew she had done wrong. Understood that she wanted a second chance. Was she too naïve to have hoped he’d do just that?

He stopped, turned, and frowned at her. A shiver went down her spine as she watched him raise one eyebrow, but he didn’t move. He simply stared at her. Then he rolled his eyes and left.

Can two seemingly incompatible people who judge each other on past events be able to find some common ground?

Harrison Hendrix believes in second chances, but when it comes to Melody, he has every reason to doubt it’s possible. He’s conflicted when he sees her back in town and tries his best to see the change in her that other friends mention. Even more so when spending a night with her after being set up for a dinner date.

Life hasn’t been kind to Melody Foster, and she returns to Alinta Bay for a new beginning. Hit by tragedy again, she’s determined to live life to the fullest and with no regrets. She creates a bucket list … on which #8 the very difficult, yet extremely sexy Harrison has been included. Why does it seem he’s always around when she’s in trouble?

Maybe it’s time to take a risk and leave the past where it belongs, but will trusting their instinct be the right choice for them?

Melody should’ve known she wasn’t able to hide something like that from Lisa. She’d often surprised her by her intuition. “It’s been very kind to me so far.”

Lisa placed her hand onto Melody’s. “Will you keep it?”

She didn’t hesitate with the reply. “Yes, I will keep it. No matter what. That’s why I’ve returned here. There’s not a nicer place I could think of to raise a child.”

“What about the father?”

Melody pressed her lips together as her gaze went out towards the horizon again as she thought of Mick. There’d been no doubt in her mind, he wouldn’t have been happy about the news, but his reaction, as well as his family’s, had stunned her. And had shaken her to the very core.

“I can do it without him.”

“Please tell me, though, that he knows.”

Melody gave a slow nod, but didn’t speak. Calm spread through her body when Lisa gave her hand a soft squeeze.

Only a short while later, she watched her friend walk back along the road and presumably back to the house, feeling torn inside. Torn between the joy of carrying a baby, and sadness at the knowledge that it would grow up without a father. With a deep sigh, she closed her eyes for a moment. The cool breeze of the ocean hit her face, leaving goose bumps pebbling down her arms. One last glance over the water and she stood to return to the house as well.

Already from the distance, she spotted Harrison in front of the house. Slowing her steps, she shot him a glare, which he met dead on. She was sure her heart skipped a beat, and it annoyed the hell out of her. Her feet didn’t move despite how much she wanted them to. And damn it, if there wasn’t something in those green eyes that drew her in. That moment passed quickly, however, and he rushed past her down the street almost bumping into her.

Lisa sat next to her. “I thought I’d find you here.”

“I love this place. The old saying you don’t miss it until it is gone is true.”

Out of the corner of her eye she saw contentment on her friend’s face, but she remained silent.

It was a good five to ten minutes before Lisa finally broke the silence. “I apologise for Harrison. He’s very protective of me.” She paused. “Not sure where that comes from, because I don’t believe I’m an old and fragile woman.”

Melody turned to look at her. “He loves you. We always over react when it comes to people or things we love.”

“Yes.” Lisa agreed. “Yes, that makes sense.” She moved slightly towards Melody and brushed a stray strand of hair out of her face. “Is the baby causing you any trouble?”

Eyes wide, she stared at the older woman in surprise. “How … how do you know?”

Lisa’s warm voice gave Melody some comfort. “I’m fifty years and some. I’ve seen a lot in my life. It’s written all over your face.”

A little while later, Melody headed down to the foreshore. As she waded along the beach, she picked up a few pretty seashells, remembering the days she’d collected them with Lisa to decorate photo frames, added them in a glass canister with a starfish, or, her favourite, creating simple wind chimes.

She had looked forward to seeing Lisa again, and the disappointment of not being able to share her news with her bothered her a little. But would she have told Lisa everything straight away? The reason why she was here? It’d been a rough few months. A sigh escaped her as the ache of losing her grandmother and the pain caused by Mick nearly ripped her apart. It was a terrible ache and no medication in the world was able to ease it.

Comfort and bliss trickled through her as she placed her hand on her stomach, remembering there was something, after all, that was able to ease the pain a little. Her grandmother’s words came to mind that even though painful at that moment sometimes it was best to move on with life. No matter what happened.

She did her best doing just that.

She sat on a bench along the path. Deeply inhaling the salty air, she closed her eyes for a brief moment as the breeze brushed her face, listening to the sound of the surf and the squawking of seagulls. Out near the small harbour, the water lapped against the rocks and seagulls screeched high above in the blue sky. The fresh air filled her lungs, and she soaked in the sun’s warm rays while trying to ignore the small wave of nausea that hit her.

A gentle touch on her shoulder startled her.

“I know… miracles do happen.” She put as much sarcasm as she was able to into her words, sick of being reminded of her old self and sick of having to explain herself all the time. But then again, as much as she disliked the situation, she knew he had a reason not to trust her.

She stood and took the cup to the sink. “If you don’t mind, I’ll take my bag upstairs and then have a little stroll along the beach. I’ve missed it so much.”

“How long are you staying?”

Her gaze went out the window again. Forever was on the tip of her tongue, but without looking at him, she avoided his question, because she knew exactly what he was asking. “With your parents or in Alinta Bay?”

“Both, I suppose.”

With a shrug, she turned and their eyes met again. “I’ve changed. Who knows? Perhaps people here have changed as well. Let’s wait and see how things turn out.” And without waiting for his reply, she left the kitchen, grabbed her bag in the hall, and went upstairs to the little attic apartment. She’d come to love it during her previous stay here. It hadn’t changed as if Lisa had known she would return one day. The main room and the kitchen were an open plan space with access to a very small roof terrace where she’d often sat planning her life. There was a tiny bedroom and an even smaller bathroom, but it was all she needed. And all she’d come to treasure.

Melody stepped into the apartment and closed the door behind her taking a deep breath as she threw her bag onto the sofa. Then she walked over to the window and opened it to let the fresh, although very cool, air in.

Yes, it was good to be back.

Despite Harrison.
