TODAY’S HOOK:


Staring blankly with her mouth open, panic rushed through her veins with every thump of her erratic heartbeat. An uncomfortable silence fell over them before she spoke with a rushed voice, “No. No, of course not. We’re accepting.”

She turned to look at her younger sister. “We’re actually looking forward to seeing it, aren’t we?”

He stood with one swift movement and went to a little cupboard near the window to retrieve a bunch of keys. “Would you like me to take you there?”

Still feeling a rush of excitement as well as caution within her, Sophie took Mia’s hand and inclined her head when she asked, “Is it far?”

Her voice sounded tired even to her. It had been a long day already. She stood and placed her arm around Mia, assuming that, considering how tired she was, her little sister was most likely exhausted.

“No, not at all. Five to ten minute drive, I’d say,” the attorney replied.

“I still don’t understand. Why us?” Sophie asked quietly, meeting his gaze and, for the first time, taking in his icy blue eyes. He was attractive, with a face tanned by wind and sun, and there always seemed to be a hint of a smile on his lips.

Her gaze fixed back on his mouth. Blushing, she quickly looked away.

Mr O’Connor let out a long sigh. “Ms Bellinger was one of the partner’s clients. I was only given the details shortly after the client’s death.”

Sophie drew in her lips, as her gaze drifted past him to the window. She took a few deep breaths, inwardly calming herself. Nothing had ever been easy in her life.

“Why isn’t the partner here?”

“Retired.”

As she pondered on his reply for a moment, she began to imagine what life could be like with this inheritance.

Different. And better.

Another sigh escaped as she returned her gaze to the man behind the desk. “You can’t leave your assets to just anybody, can you?”

“Miss Lever—”

“Levesque,” she helped him.

Their eyes met.

“Are you refusing the bequest?” he asked hesitantly, and she clearly noticed how one of his eyebrows arched upward.

Sophie arched an eyebrow in disbelief, doubting the accuracy of it all. Not only did she try not to question his competence as a lawyer, but she also hoped it wasn’t a dreadful misunderstanding.


With a slight shrug of her shoulder, she asked, “Why not?”


He met her gaze steadily. “Pardon me?”


Sitting up straight, she repeated, “Why not? Why aren’t there any further details?”


He rubbed his chin with his fingers, his unease now obvious, and although she almost felt sorry for him, she tried not to care. She needed to know more. And not just the what, but why and who as well. Only a week earlier, Sophie had received the call from Mr. O’Connor telling her about an inheritance. Initially, she’d thought it had been a horrible joke when he’d given her details on where to pick up airplane tickets to Hobart. It was important for her to come, he’d explained. Some legality she hadn’t understood. Something about her having to sign documents for the transfer of ownership of some assets. It’d sounded too farfetched at the start, but after some research on the firm with the help of a friend, it sounded valid, and she’d hoped her life was finally turning around for the better.

The handsome attorney on the other side of the massive desk leaned forward and rested his elbows on it before he started to repeat his earlier speech. Although hearing his words, Sophie still found it all very hard to comprehend. Here she was in this old office, furnished with heavy antique oak furniture, the curtains in a pretty shade of aubergine, and the carpet beneath her shoes thick and warm in a matching shade, hearing about an inheritance from someone she’d never even heard of.


Startled by the subtle sound of the clock chiming across the road, Sophie’s gaze turned to the window, where she saw the post office building across the road. It looked impressive and old. It’d been only a few hours since they’d arrived in Hobart, the most southern capital in Australia, but she already liked it. A lot more than Sydney, the place she’d lived all her life.


Hauled back from her thoughts, she heard Mr. O’Connor say, “I believe she was a distant relative of yours. I’m afraid I don’t have any further details.”

Sophie Levesque stared at the attorney in front of her, waiting for some answers. She and her little sister, Mia, had been quietly sitting in Mr O’Connor’s office for more than half an hour, learning about the details of their inheritance.
Once he was finished, silence hung in the air before she asked with raised eyebrows. “Who?”

“Clara Catherine Bellinger.”

Mia leaned closer to her elder sister and gave a soft tug on Sophie’s shirt. “Who is she?”

Her shoulders slouched. Hadn’t she learnt from her mistakes? She’d just hung up the phone on the man who’d cheated on her many times. There were a whole lot of reasons not to drool over someone new.

Turning off the phone, she stood and went inside to the kitchen, worn out from a long day.

One man had cheated on her, so why did she assume all men were like Eric?

She heaved a sigh. To protect her heart. It was as simple as that.

On the day of her wedding, she had promised Eric to love him through good times and bad. Little had she known then that her promise would be such a farce. But she had loved him and she had been in this marriage for the long haul. Unfortunately, the bad times had been beyond her strength and even though she didn’t like it, leaving the marriage had been the right decision for her and Zoe. Did that mean, though, all men were like Eric? Jesse had been so good to them today and he had cared so much about Zoe when she’d helped him at the animal shelter.

Goddamn. Why couldn’t life be easy?

Placing her cup into the dishwasher, she gave a raw chuckle. She had only recently left her husband behind and was already thinking about another man. Was she that desperate? Didn’t she need some healing first?

Lexie lifted her hands and studied them. They were still red and itchy from the eczema. How she would’ve loved to touch Jesse’s hand, even if just for a short while. And even just for not being rude. After all, he’d stopped for them and had been so kind. But hiding her hands in front of others had become a habit. Just like walking around with gloves, sometimes even in summer. With her shoulders slouched, she headed to her bedroom, glad that her skin disorder was at least getting better. The doctor had diagnosed it as a stress condition, and stressed she had been the last couple of months. And it was such a relief to see how it improved from day to day since moving to Alinta Bay. She picked up her tube of cream and gently messaged it over her hands. Eric had often complained about her hands, and she would’ve loved to blame him for it. Alas, she hadn’t.

It seemed not only her heart needed healing; her body did, too.

“Spare me the words, Eric. Look, it’s late here. I’ve had a big day, and I still have a few things to organise. I’ll make sure Zoe will call you tomorrow.”

“I could take a few days off and come over, or take her to Bali—”

She didn’t let him finish the sentence, but disconnected the call. So many promises. She’d heard it all before. It’d been a deciding factor for her to move to Victoria, over three thousand kilometres away. She didn’t want to hear his excuses anymore. Just wanted to get on with her life.

Lexie was about to place the phone next to her on the seat, when she remembered the photos she’d taken during the day. Less during the ill-fated walk, but more of Zoe holding the small joey in her arms. Lexie flicked through the pictures, a smile tugging at her lips. The girl had struggled lately with leaving friends behind and moving interstate, she’d withdrawn into her own world, so Lexie was delighted and proud at the same time to see the love and care Zoe had given the fragile animal. She’d taken many photos and one just as lovely as the previous one.

Until she came across one photo Zoe must’ve taken. Lexie zoomed in a little. The picture was of her and Jesse. She zoomed in even more on his face, studied his brown eyes, his tousled blond hair, beautifully shaped cheeks which were shadowed by beard stubbles, and the smile on his lips. It made her smile in return.

Her chest tightened with tension as she opened her eyes. She drew strength from the soothing splashing of the water, and the sun set across the horizon, casting an iridescent colour over the water and the sky. The view across the ocean had been the main reason for her to buy the house. She hoped to earn enough money soon to do some renovations and build an extension to the house, because despite telling Zoe she’d look for a bigger house, she didn’t really want to leave this one.

“You should’ve thought about that before you crawled in her bed,” she finally replied.

“I made a mistake—”

“A couple of mistakes, if I may remind you.”

Silence hung between them again, but she didn’t push him, she knew it’d set him off in a tirade of angry words.

“You didn’t have to move to the other side of the country,” he spat.

“No, I didn’t. But I panicked. I was angry. I needed some distance. And to be honest, Zoe is ten years old and this is the first time you’re showing an interest in her.”

“Lexie, I’m—”

What was his surname again?

Her reveries were interrupted by the ringing of her phone, and she rushed over to the table, grabbed it, and checked the ID. Indecision lingered whether or not to answer the call. She knew, though, she had to be mature about it. With a casual flick on the phone, she inhaled and answered.

“Hello, Eric.”

“Hi, Lexie. How are you?”

She closed her eyes, trying to cope with the wave of nausea his voice caused her. “I’m well, but I’m sure that’s not the reason of your call.”

Later that day, Lexie took her cup of tea and sat on the front porch, enjoying the sunset, its red and orange glow towering across the ocean. It’d been an exhausting day. What had started as a simple walk through the forest had turned into an adventure in many ways. With some contentment, she recalled how much fun her daughter had had at the animal shelter. Lexie had followed the park ranger all the way back into Alinta Bay, and once they’d arrived at the shelter, he’d involved Zoe in each little step to get the joey settled. She chuckled at how much her ten-year-old girl had fussed. Zoe’s eyes had lit up when she saw a couple of kittens, and Lexie was proud of her for how she’d handled them, as well as all the other animals she’d been introduced to.

And then there’d been the park ranger. Jesse. He’d been a wealth of knowledge and he’d also been very patient with Zoe, explaining, and showing her so many things. Lexie liked him and despite her best intentions of staying away from men, she was looking forward to seeing him again the next day when dropping Zoe off to help with the feeding.

She shook her head, reminding herself of the reason she’d landed in Alinta Bay in the first place, which was her broken marriage. Her daughter and her job needed all her attention, not one very attractive park ranger.

Jesse.
