a story this is mainly set in the USA and follows our itinerary
when we travelled through five States in a motorhome a few years ago.
Today’s snippet is in Ivy’s POV.

This week’s Hook …
Ivy pressed her lips together before she replied, “Not this time, Dylan. There’s always an excuse for your drinking. Your father’s death. Your broken leg. The police taking your bike—”
“Hey, that was truly unfair,” he interrupted.
“And now your job. I want more of this life other than this trailer and surviving from week to week.”
He raked his hand through his hair. “Okay, honey. We can do that.”
“No!” She reached for her bag and began throwing her few belongings in it. “I can do it, but on my own.”
With heavy shoulders, she sat on the edge of the bed. “I need to do it,” she whispered. “I owe it to myself to find out whether I was meant for bigger things.”
At some point in her life, things had gone bad. She’d been raised by her mom, who had worked hard to make ends meet every day. Leaving her at the age of only twenty-two, Ivy had been in search for more in her life. More than working all day only to wake up the next morning to do it all over again—and not getting anywhere. Her mother had always said that much of life simply happened and was out of their control.
Well, Ivy disagreed.

An abrupt jolt threw him off balance, disrupting his train of thought and momentarily disorienting him. He instinctively reached out, pressing his hands against the walls to steady himself. The sudden darkness followed by flickering dim lights left him briefly dazed. He took a few deep breaths to regain his composure and calm his racing heart. In the dim light, he noticed the woman crouching on the floor, arms wrapped around her legs.
“Are you okay?”
As the words left his lips, he cursed himself for asking such a stupid question. Clearly, she wasn’t. Judging by her trembling hands and uneven breathing, she was far from okay.
In an unexpected encounter, the lives of Jonah, a rescue diver from New Zealand, and Maddie a spirited local, collide, forever altering their future.

Well, Ivy disagreed.
She looked up at him and saw him raise a brow. “Bigger things?”
Letting out a big breath, she stood again and continued packing. “Yes, bigger things. A humble house with a small backyard. With flowers of all colours. Planting my own vegetables. Children to love and hug.” She turned and pointed at the tiny bathroom. “Something bigger than this little box.”
He lifted his shoulder in a shrug. “I’ll come with.”
“No, Dylan. This is going to be my journey.”
When he placed his hand on her arm, she slowly met his gaze.
“Honey, we can work on this.”
She exhaled another long breath. “We’ve been working on this for three years now, Dylan. It’s time to concede defeat.”
Concede defeat. She shivered at the phrase. Defeat meant battle. Had her relationship with Dylan been a battle? Was there a winner or a loser?

Jonah Lewis rushed down the corridor, reaching the lift just in the nick of time before its doors closed behind him. He swiftly pressed the button for the ground floor and stood in a corner. A young woman across from him glanced briefly in his direction before averting her gaze to the closed doors.
“Sorry about that,” he offered as an attempt to break the ice, but he received only a nearly imperceptible nod in response.
His gaze shifted to the floor, studying the peculiar pattern of the carpet, attempting to ignore the awkward silence. He flinched when her sudden sneeze echoed through the little cabin like a clap of thunder.
“Bless you.”
Again, she briefly met his eyes and mumbled a quiet “Thank you.”

Ivy Bennett stormed into the back of the trailer. She’d had enough. More than enough. For the last five years, she’d lived in this small, forsaken place outside Las Vegas, surviving on the edge of existence. Her job as a waitress at the local bar paid well, but it was hard-earned money, and she was sick of her boyfriend drinking away almost every penny.
“What are you doing, Ivy?”
Her eyes narrowed furiously. “I’m leaving, Dylan. I need more than this.” She waved her hand around the inside of the trailer. To her, it wasn’t a home. It was a very long room with a double bed at one end, a small kitchen at the other, and a sitting area and bathroom in between. “I deserve more than this,” she added with emphasis.
“Honey,” Dylan said gently as he reached out for her. “Let’s talk about this.” With a hardly noticeable move, he chucked the can of beer in the bin. “I’m having a bit of a low, but I need you to get through this.”
