Jonah Lewis rushed down the corridor, reaching the lift just in the nick of time before its doors closed behind him. He swiftly pressed the button for the ground floor and stood in a corner. A young woman across from him glanced briefly in his direction before averting her gaze to the closed doors.

“Sorry about that,” he offered as an attempt to break the ice, but he received only a nearly imperceptible nod in response.

His gaze shifted to the floor, studying the peculiar pattern of the carpet, attempting to ignore the awkward silence. He flinched when her sudden sneeze echoed through the little cabin like a clap of thunder.

“Bless you.”

Again, she briefly met his eyes and mumbled a quiet “Thank you.”

Obviously, nothing had changed over the past fifteen years since he had left Alinta Bay. This place held countless memories of where he’d spent most of his childhood until his parents packed up and left to start anew in New Zealand.

This week’s Hook …

Ivy Bennett stormed into the back of the trailer. She’d had enough. More than enough. For the last five years, she’d lived in this small, forsaken place outside Las Vegas, surviving on the edge of existence. Her job as a waitress at the local bar paid well, but it was hard-earned money, and she was sick of her boyfriend drinking away almost every penny.

“What are you doing, Ivy?”

Her eyes narrowed furiously. “I’m leaving, Dylan. I need more than this.” She waved her hand around the inside of the trailer. To her, it wasn’t a home. It was a very long room with a double bed at one end, a small kitchen at the other, and a sitting area and bathroom in between. “I deserve more than this,” she added with emphasis.

“Honey,” Dylan said gently as he reached out for her. “Let’s talk about this.” With a hardly noticeable move, he chucked the can of beer in the bin. “I’m having a bit of a low, but I need you to get through this.”

“And what about the idea to move to Queenstown.”

He cocked a brow. “We’re not moving. Staff in Fox Glacier is brilliant. We’re expanding at a nice rate. Now we’d like to expand to Queenstown. It’s my hometown. I’d love to show off where I grew up.”

“I can see why,” she replied with a smile.

“Okay then.” He gave a slow nod. “Okay. Let’s talk figures.” Mat’s knowledge about figures was basic and something he’d learnt over the last few years since he’d started the business with Adam. They hadn’t been able to afford someone to look after their books, so they’d handled the task themselves. Yet, he knew what he wanted, and after two hours of discussing, arguing, and checking numbers, he’d finally come to an agreement with Karen on their first draft. It was now up to their lawyers to settle on the details.
