Today’s Snippet

He’d been barely over seven years old when he and his mother had left Australia and made their new home in London. There were vague memories in the back of his mind about the first days in school in London. He’d been the newcomer and learnt quickly to adapt and make new friends. He and his mother had lived with his grandparents until she had found a job and had been able to afford a small apartment.

Squeezing his eyes shut, Connor was desperate for the slightest bit of memory.

Anything.

But he came up empty.

“Your dad appreciates that you’ve come here.”

Connor shot around and met Emily’s gaze. For a brief moment, he lost himself in her eyes, inhaling the subtle scent of her perfume. He had no idea how to reply to her comment, so he turned back to watch the virga above the sea.

This week’s Hook …

The girl gave a slow nod as Emma filled her glass with more orange juice, while studying the little girl out of the corner of her eye. Nadine held on to an oversized doll, which was dressed in the same way as Nadine—pink T-shirt imprinted with ‘My beautiful Princess’, a denim skirt with a princess on it surrounded by lots of pink hearts in all sizes, and pink shiny sandals. Her brown hair had been done up in a ponytail.

“Where are your grandparents, Naddie?”

“Still in the room. Talking on the phone. Grandmother is always on the phone,” Nadine added.

“Do you think you’re allowed to have a bit of breakfast with me?”

With excitement spreading across Nadine’s face, she nodded her head eagerly and sat opposite Emma.

“Do they know where you are?”

The little head bobbed up and down again and with her eyes wide open she replied, “Told Grandpa.”

“I like your outfit,” Emma said while she took another glass and filled it with juice.

Nadine took one of the rolls. “Mum’s friend gave it to me for my birthday.”

“I take it you like princesses.”

“Yes!”

Innocent Tears by Iris Blobel is an intriguing romance within a romance. The reader’s attention is captured from the first page to the very last sentence, which is most unexpected. The journey that the author takes the reader on has so many twists and turns that at times the reader will wonder if it will come to a romantic conclusion as themes of human nature, both good, bad, indifferent, confused, and loving race through the book. Iris Blobel uses the characters’ natures to good advantage as she spins her tale of love, loss, and romance.

The author has used situations that are both good, bad, and downright scary, which her main characters get themselves into, to keep the reader on their toes with fear, hope, and joy that the story will have a happy ending. Readers will find themselves enthralled by the lives of Emma, Flynn McCormack, Theresa, William Gibbs, Mr. Morgan, Jack, Fran, Jacqui and not forgetting the star of the story, Nadine, better known as Naddie. These main characters appear and reappear throughout the plot.

This interesting book is very well worth reading. It is light but holds your attention to the end. The author brings her beautiful love story to an unexpected climactic conclusion. Thank you, Iris, for a relaxing yet nail-biting and exciting read. Innocent Tears will make the hours in a day fly, especially when waiting in doctors’ rooms and airports. Much appreciated.

Blurb:

Becoming a parent can be daunting at the best of times, but for Flynn McCormack, a business lawyer in Melbourne, it pulls the feet right out from underneath him. He’s become a father to six-year-old Nadine literally overnight. He didn’t know about her existence, and the news throws him into chaos, even more so when he is asked to take over custody.

With the help of Emma, an employee at the hotel where Nadine and her grandparents are staying, Flynn tries to do the right thing. Yet, the right thing in his eyes differs from his parents’ ideas, and Emma is voicing her opinion, too, leaving Nadine right in the middle of it all, still grieving the loss of her mother. There’s no doubt she’s afraid about where and with whom she will settle.

Will a letter Flynn receives help him decide what to do?

Today’s Snippet

Suddenly the humorous expression on her face changed, but he couldn’t figure out what she was thinking. It bugged him that he wasn’t able to remember anything from his childhood here in Australia, but it annoyed him even more to see the disbelief in these two. The next few weeks were going to be a steep learning curve about his past. She stared at him for a long moment. Although he wasn’t coy when it came to women, it made him uncomfortable, and he turned to look out across the ocean again. There was a big container ship on the horizon, moving along at snail’s pace. It was barely visible in the distance, despite being near the coast. Closing his eyes, he compared himself to a ship in the ocean, so close to everyone, yet out of everyone’s reach as he once again wondered what had happened. Or why he was here, at the other end of the world, twenty-four flight hours away, about nine time zones ahead of his family back in England.

His father’s and Emily’s voices were distant as Connor tried his hardest to remember anything about this place. Remember somebody called Ethan or Niall. But he came up with nothing. Zilch.

Not even the mention of a kiss triggered any memories.

This week’s Hook …

The following Monday, Emma accepted a lift from Jack, who worked an extra hour Mondays and Fridays to cover for a longer lunch, when he was allowed to use the gym in the basement.

Now she was enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel’s café before starting her shift in an hour. She peered up from her corn flakes and saw her own blue eyes looking back at her in the reflection of the glass divider between the booths. A strand of hair had escaped her ponytail, and she secured it with a bobby pin. Thinking of the little girl from the other day, she hoped the child wasn’t teased for her freckles the way Emma had been. Her mother had always told her it gave her a mischievous look, yet in her twenties, she’d prefer to be attractive.

“Excuse me?”

Recalling the soft voice, Emma turned and met Nadine’s beautiful eyes. “Good morning, Nadine. It was Nadine, wasn’t it?”

The girl’s face lit up. “Yes, but Mum always called me Naddie.”

“May I call you Naddie?”

Today’s Snippet

Connor noticed his father’s long sigh. It seemed even talking was an effort for him nowadays. There were so many questions about the illness, but also the medication he was obviously refusing.

“He’s even taken on the pommy accent. My own son has a pommy accent,” Jack told Emily as she checked his temperature.

She turned to look at Connor and gave him a smile. “I suppose it’s been a while since you moved to England.”

“He was seven.”

Emily placed her hand on her chest and with exaggeration replied, “Oh, I remember. I was heartbroken for days.”

Ten sentences and a few more

Connor cocked a brow. “Days?”

Her laugh was genuine and beautiful. “Well, you know, Niall showed me his secret spot at the beach.”

“Niall?”

“I can’t believe you don’t remember Niall.”

“He can’t even bloody remember Ethan,” Jack growled.

Emily stared at Connor. “You’re kiddin’, right?”

5 star review (GR):

How I enjoyed this sweet and mysterious love story with a fun twist of an ever present spirit, Bigalow. Enjoyed the author’s descriptive writing along with making me feel all the emotions and feelings about being in or present in the story,

Fell in love with main. female character, Hannah, the strong, rugged yet compassionate Gideon and of course the lovable Biglow. Appreciated how author kept up in a befuddle as to who Bigalow was, is and enjoyed the author’s reveal of who Bigalow really is.

There was plenty of mystery and intrigure to keep the reader involved jand interested in the relatable drama and every day life of Hannah and Gideon. Highly recommend this book for a nice, leisurely and enjoyable read.

Received an early copy for my honest and voluntary review.
