He picked up the phone again and dialled the familiar number. His mother answered the call almost immediately.
“Hi, Mum.”
“Hello darling. How are you?”
He leaned further into the uncomfortable couch and closed his eyes, enjoying the sound of his mother’s voice. It hadn’t been easy for his parents easy to hear about his sudden bad health, but what worried them more was that he’d packed up and drove off into the unknown.
“I’ve arrived in Victoria. There’s a small place along the Great Ocean Road. Cosy and nice.”
His mother giggled. “And I suppose you’ve been surfing there, too.”
She knew him well. The house he’d grown up in was on a property next to the beach. The surf was his second home. “I haven’t, yet, but I can’t wait. It’s one of the best locations for surfing.”
Bang!
Jon jerked and his eyes flew wide open, only to stare into the darkness. There was more rumbling in the distance.
“Jonny, are you okay?”
“Mum, I call you back. I’m okay, but lightning has plunged us into darkness.” He chuckled. “It’s gonna be an interesting night.”
“You always had a knack for adventure. Stay safe, love.”
The idea that his mother thought of him as adventurous put a smile on his lips. Yes, he and his friends had always been out surfing and exploring. He couldn’t stand boring. He disconnected the call and turned on the torch, walking over to the window. The world was dark as abyss, until lightning brightened up the sky in the near distance. It was quite a spectacle, followed by more rumbling, fortunately a bit further away as well.
He turned and stared at the connecting door. Should he check on Piper?

Wiping the last tears from her face, she recalled those chocolate brown eyes beneath his thick lashes and the straight brow line. But it’d been his smile that’d been contagious. His teeth were even and white, in a nice contrast with his olive skin. Anticipation rushed through her as she contemplated returning the next day. In her mind, she imagined touching his body. He’d been so damn sexy in his wet suit, unzipped down to just below the navel, revealing a muscular chest and powerful shoulders. She’d certainly been attracted to his tall, athletic physique. And she liked the way his dark, damp hair had curled around his face. Katie walked towards her car across the street when her mother’s voice caught her attention.
“Here you are, love.”
Katie turned and smiled. “Mum? What are you doing here?”

Jon had no idea what made him invite Piper for breakfast. She tried the front door and it was unlocked, which actually surprised her.
“Not open,” Mac’s deep, rumbly voice called out from the back about a second before he stepped out from his workshop. His eyes widened when he saw her.
And he stood there looking like deer in headlights. Good.
“Adeline,” he began.
“A text? Seriously? You blow me off with a freaking text,” she snapped out, her boots stomping forward of their own volition. That burning fire that had spent days kindling was licking up her spine now as she worked up a good head of anger.
He closed his eyes briefly as he moved toward her. “Look, it’s not what you think.”
“Really? It’s not what I think? You didn’t send me a dismissive, crappy text about an hour before our date? After spending all that time together and becoming…friends.” Or she’d thought they had. Obviously she was wrong. “So you didn’t blow me off after all that? And then ignore me right in front of people on Main Street?” It was quite literally possible there was actual steam coming out of her ears right now.
Guilt flickered across his expression for a moment but then his face went carefully neutral. “Look, I didn’t know how else to handle it. I just don’t think we should see each other. I shouldn’t have ignored you and I should have called, but—”
She’d took another step forward, hands on hips, when the front door behind her swung open with a bang.
She jumped and turned to find some guy stalking in. He had on heavy-looking boots, jeans, a short-sleeved T-shirt, and there was a chain hanging from his back pocket attached to his belt. And he had some ugly-looking tattoos on his arms. Prison tats.

Katie Cassidy stared after Tyson. Her heart was still racing, screaming at her to follow him, find out more about him, enjoy his company a little longer. It’d been a short conversation, but, good grief, his smile had stirred her and had sent a rush of warmth through her. She shook her head at her body’s crazy reaction and with one final hiccupping sob, she picked up her jacket from the sand and walked across the dunes towards the parking lot. For the first time since Paige’s death, a sense of delight spread within her. It had only been a couple of minutes that she’d talked to Tyson, a stranger, but she liked him. She liked how he’d cared enough to stop and check on her. And with some surprise she admitted to herself how attracted she’d been to him.

Piper disconnected the call and looked towards the door. Why was she looking forward to the breakfast the next day? Hadn’t she learnt her lesson from her marriage with Darren, who so ungraciously left her, leaving her with nothing.
Letting out a soft sigh, she decided not to go to the breakfast. It was more important to focus on moving forward and not flirt with strange men … as nice as they might be.
The decision didn’t make her feel better, despite it being the right thing to do, and with her shoulders slouched, Piper went to the small bedroom, undressed, and returned to bed.

Ty rolled his eyes. His friends and football mates had teased him that at the age of twenty-eight, he still took his parents on holidays, but Ty couldn’t care less. His father’s health was crucial to him, and with the football pre-season not starting for a little while longer, he relished his time out of the spotlight. It’d been his first year as a pro footballer in the Australian Football League with a Melbourne club, and out of the twenty-two home and away games, he’d been on the field during most of the meets. His centre position as ruckman had given him plenty of opportunities to be part of the game— except when Toby McIntosh had knocked him out, giving him a nice concussion for two weeks.
Initially hesitating, he finally replied, Great surf. Great weather. Possibly great woman.
