Today’s Snippet
“I’ve been here the whole time,” he replied with some feigned offense. Hannah grabbed her bag and reached for the door handle to get out of the car. “I’ll call the police.” Fear shot through her as she fumbled with her phone, dialling triple zero. Breathing was hard and she stepped away from the car, taking another look at the man in her car to best describe him. But he was gone. Hannah rubbed her eyes vigorously, ignoring her makeup, and looked again. Gone. Disconnecting the call, she carefully walked around the car. Nothing. She gazed into the dark distance, but wasn’t able to see anything either. Her body trembled but she got back into the car. She locked the doors, checked the backseats, and took a few deep breaths before driving off. What the hell had just happened? Another look into the distance, but all she saw was everyone gone and a quiet local street. A sob escaped her from the adrenaline. She had to get home as quick as possible.

I thought I’d go back to my first series “Beginnings“. Some of you might not know it, so hopefully you’ll enjoy it just as much as you enjoyed the “Alinta Bay” Stories
Today’s Hook:
Sophie shrugged. “I wouldn’t have a clue.” Then turned her attention back on Mr. O’Connor and asked the same thing. “Who is she?” The handsome attorney on the other side of the massive desk leaned forward and rested his elbows on it before he started to repeat his earlier speech. Here she was in this old office, furnished with heavy antique oak furniture, the curtains in a pretty shade of aubergine, and the carpet beneath her shoes thick and warm in a matching shade, hearing about an inheritance from someone she’d never even heard of. Startled by the subtle sound of the clock chiming across the road, Sophie’s gaze turned to the window, where she saw the post office building across the road. It looked impressive and old. It’d been only a few hours since they’d arrived in Hobart, the most southern capital in Australia, but she already liked it. A lot more than Sydney, the place she’d lived all her life. Hauled back from her thoughts, she heard Mr. O’Connor say, “I believe she was a distant relative of yours. I’m afraid I don’t have any further details.”

They left Liz’ house in a group and chatted a little more about the storm front which was on its way as they walked to their cars. Hannah gave a quick wave goodbye as she opened the car and then slid behind the steering wheel. “Oh Hannah,” Kerry said. She flinched as her book friend stood next to her car suddenly. “My apologies. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Kerry looked around before she focussed on Hannah again. “Are you still good for the BBQ on Friday?” She had to dig deep in her memory to find the facts about the invitation when she finally remembered that Kerry had asked her to join her and some friends for a BBQ to celebrate her husband’s birthday. Kerry had been relentless so in the end Hannah had given in. “Of course, seven-thirty at your place. I look forward to it.” “Great. I’ll see you then,” Kerry said and walked to her own car. Hannah settled behind the steering wheel and started the car. “Another person who would like to play cupid?” Hannah jumped in her seat and turned to look at the person in the passenger seat. “How the hell did you get in here?”

Her blue-green eyes widened. She traced her fingertips over his smooth jaw, leaving sparks in her wake.
“You’re so kind. I almost believe it when you say it. God, I wish I’d met you years ago, Jeremiah.”
“Why do you call me Jeremiah? Everyone else calls me Jim.”
“It feels more personal, as though you belong only to me. I may have to share Jim with the rest of the world, but Jeremiah—the strong, kind man I’ve admired over the past several months—is all mine.”
