He turned and stared at the connecting door. Should he check on Piper?

“Are you okay?”

It was a stupid statement, but he didn’t know what else to say, because, good grief, she looked sexy in that short T-shirt and the skimpy shorts.

She nodded, but her pale face told him that she’d either just come out of a deep sleep or she was scared.

Another thunder broke the silence and Piper jerked. He reached for her arm to gently pull her in.

“Would you mind staying until this is over?” she murmured into his chest.

Jon moved his hand up to her shoulder, holding her a little tighter, and placed his lips to her forehead. “Let’s get you save.” With a soft nudge he moved her back into her room. “It’ll pass. It’s all bark and no bite.”

“My dad always said that. And he lied.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

Philippa fastened the last black button on her crisp new lime-green kitchen jacket. So much for a simple staff presentation. Not only was she expected to introduce Dominic, per Zurie’s request, she now had to stay for his entire cooking demonstration.

She snatched the empty packaging for the jacket from her desk. Underneath it was the bio for Dominic that his publicist had dropped off not too long ago.

Chef extraordinaire. Bestselling author. Star of an acclaimed cooking show. A pampered chef focused on his public persona. Was that who she was dealing with for the next few weeks?

As she stepped out of her office into the kitchen, a few of the staff walked by.

“I don’t care what he makes,” one of the servers said. “I just want to hear his voice as he describes it. He could make mud pies sound irresistible.”

Philippa kept her face neutral as she followed behind them, but inside, she gave an inner eye roll”

“I’m just glad he’s not like some celebrities,” a kitchen helper responded. “The way he stood up for us about where we could sit in the dining room proves he actually cares about people who work in the kitchen.”

Stood up for them? Was there not enough seats?

Philippa flagged down Quinn. “I heard something about there being a problem with seating for the demo. Is everything okay?”

“Oh, yes, it’s fine now. There was just some mix-up with the publicity person. She said all the Pasture Lane employees would have to sit in the back and let everyone else sit up front. But Dominic set her straight.”

As Quinn rushed into the dining room, Philippa hung back and peered through the window near the top of the right-hand door.

“How does it look out there?”

The resonant tone of Dominic’s voice coming from behind ignited a frisson of awareness that moved along Philippa’s spine and tingled across her nape.

“It’s a full house.” She calmed an unsteady breath and faced him.

Up close, he looked even better than he had in the lobby. But hints of fatigue were in his eyes. She hadn’t taken his present work schedule into consideration when she’d asked him to do the cooking demo.

“Thank you…”

“I’m sorry…”

They both spoke at the same time.

Dominic gestured for her to speak first.

“I appreciate you adding this to your full schedule. And for making sure my staff have front-row seats. If they weren’t already fans of chef extraordinaire, Dominic Crawford, they are now.”

“Chef extraordinaire?”

She’d meant to tease him, but from his slight wince, her attempt had fallen flat. “That didn’t come out right. I didn’t mean it in a bad way. I was just referring to the intro Amber gave me.”

“I should have guessed.” He smiled, but as he glanced at the paper in her hand a shadow of discomfort moved across his face. “You don’t have to say all that. Owner of Frost & Flame is fine.”

“And have Amber come after me? No, thank you.”

Dominic gave a low chuckle. “Yeah, she’s insistent.” He took a step forward and the subtle notes of his cologne wafted into the space between them. “About the changes with the demo. I—”

The door opened behind Philippa, pitching her forward, and her hand with the paper landed on his solid chest.

Dominic took hold of her arms. “You okay?”

As she looked into his eyes, familiarity washed over her. The automatic desire to lean into him almost overwhelmed her.

Amber peeked past the door. “Chef Gayle, good. You’re right where you’re supposed to be.”

decisive moments

Her mother turned Katie in her arms. “How about a little walk along the beach?”

“I’d like that.”

As they headed towards the dunes, her mum reminisced, “You two loved the beach. Some weekends, you’d sneak out of the house to come here in the early hours. I was always worried, but your dad would say—” She imitated her husband’s deep voice. “They’ll be all right. The girls have the sea in their blood.” And added with a soft laugh, “But I always saw that bit of relief on his face when you two returned. You can’t be too careful near the water.”

Katie joined her mother in her amusement. “We’d watch the boys surf.”

“I liked my idea of you two building little sandcastles better.”

Katie released a snort. “Mum, we were teenagers.”

He turned and stared at the connecting door. Should he check on Piper?

He dropped his gaze to the floor. He didn’t know her. Still, something inside urged him to make sure she was okay. The silence was only broken by the occasional rumble in the distance, which grew louder again, though.

He listened as he moved to the door. No sound from across the hall. What was he expecting though?

Bang!

“Shit,” he muttered and rushed along the small passage.

He was about to knock when the door flew open and Piper stood in front of him, protecting her eyes with her hand from his torch light.

decisive moments

by Iris Blobel

Her mother placed her hand on Katie’s shoulder. “Caring for my little girl.”

She appreciated her mum’s words. “I needed a little time out, I suppose.”

“I had a feeling you’d be coming down to the beach.” Her mum dropped a kiss on Katie’s forehead.

Taking a deep breath, she leaned into her mother’s embrace, relishing the comfort. “I miss her so much, Mum.”

Her voice nearly broke, tears trickled down her face once more as her chest tightened. The grief inside ate at her, the pain, emotionally and physically, so hard to cope with, yet, for the first time since her sister’s death, an emotion other than mourning spread within her. Something different. Sadness had suffocated all other emotions for the last months, but today something different had surfaced. Still unsure whether it was good or whether she was even ready for it, she didn’t believe a timeline existed to grieve a person.

“We all miss her, darling, but she wouldn’t want us to stop living. Her life’s come to an end, and you will need to live your life with twice as much enthusiasm, with four eyes, with two hearts and—”

“Without her,” she finished her mother’s sentence.

Her mother gave a slow nod. “Have you been working this week?”

Katie pursed her lips before she answered. “Yes, I have, but I took today off. Only today.”

“You need to keep this job, love.” She inhaled deeply. “I know.”

He picked up the phone again and dialled the familiar number. His mother answered the call almost immediately.

“Hi, Mum.”

“Hello darling. How are you?”

He leaned further into the uncomfortable couch and closed his eyes, enjoying the sound of his mother’s voice. It hadn’t been easy for his parents easy to hear about his sudden bad health, but what worried them more was that he’d packed up and drove off into the unknown.

“I’ve arrived in Victoria. There’s a small place along the Great Ocean Road. Cosy and nice.”

His mother giggled. “And I suppose you’ve been surfing there, too.”

She knew him well. The house he’d grown up in was on a property next to the beach. The surf was his second home. “I haven’t, yet, but I can’t wait. It’s one of the best locations for surfing.”

Bang!

Jon jerked and his eyes flew wide open, only to stare into the darkness. There was more rumbling in the distance.

“Jonny, are you okay?”

“Mum, I call you back. I’m okay, but lightning has plunged us into darkness.” He chuckled. “It’s gonna be an interesting night.”

“You always had a knack for adventure. Stay safe, love.”

The idea that his mother thought of him as adventurous put a smile on his lips. Yes, he and his friends had always been out surfing and exploring. He couldn’t stand boring. He disconnected the call and turned on the torch, walking over to the window. The world was dark as abyss, until lightning brightened up the sky in the near distance. It was quite a spectacle, followed by more rumbling, fortunately a bit further away as well.

He turned and stared at the connecting door. Should he check on Piper?

decisive moments

by Iris Blobel

Wiping the last tears from her face, she recalled those chocolate brown eyes beneath his thick lashes and the straight brow line. But it’d been his smile that’d been contagious. His teeth were even and white, in a nice contrast with his olive skin. Anticipation rushed through her as she contemplated returning the next day. In her mind, she imagined touching his body. He’d been so damn sexy in his wet suit, unzipped down to just below the navel, revealing a muscular chest and powerful shoulders. She’d certainly been attracted to his tall, athletic physique. And she liked the way his dark, damp hair had curled around his face. Katie walked towards her car across the street when her mother’s voice caught her attention.

“Here you are, love.”

Katie turned and smiled. “Mum? What are you doing here?”
