He raised a brow, but she didn’t worry whether he was offended or not, or whether he even understood. All she wanted was to get away from him and into her car as soon as possible. When he pointed towards her jacket pocket, panic rose within her again. Her car was right behind her, preventing her to increase the distance between them.

“You need to relax.” He pointed towards the pocket of her jacket. “Are those your keys?”

She followed to where his finger was pointing, only to find the acrylic heart-shaped key ring that held a photo of Jason hanging outside. Taking the keys, she muttered, “Thanks,” and quickly unlocked the car.

Yet, her pain was still too raw, and even with all her willpower, her hands trembled at the idea of a man stepping too close. The desire she’d been harbouring the last few weeks suddenly turned into apprehension. She inhaled a couple of deep breaths to calm herself as she held Oliver’s gaze.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She took another breath and stepped away from him, still searching for her keys. They just had to be in her bag. She had no doubt about it.

“Lost your keys?” he queried this time.

His deep voice was soothing and caring, and although everything inside her urged her to relax, her inner restlessness took over. Shaking her head frantically, she whispered, “No. They’re somewhere in here.” While taking another step away from him, she added, “I’d appreciate if you would leave me be.”

Tamara Amis placed her hand on her chest to catch her breath. Oliver had given her a fright, and she cursed him for doing so as well as herself for being so on edge.

Of course, he was no stranger to her. She’d watched him on the field a couple of times since being hired as an accountant in the office. The many athletic sportsmen were often a welcome distraction to her daily numbers, but Oliver had also been the hero in many of her daydreams. He had no problems showing off his upper body after a long, rigid training session, but she had to admit, he looked even better close up—his suntanned face with just a shadow of a beard, his dark hair cut short, still wet from his shower, and those green eyes. Her whole body reacted simply from laying eyes on him.

He nodded and a sense of relief trickled through him when the doors opened after what had seemed the longest two minutes in a long time.

“Enjoy Melbourne,” he tried once more, but he should have known better. She wasn’t the talkative kind. Shaking his head, he exited the lift and headed towards the front doors. As he walked across the car park, he saw her in the distance and as fate wanted it right next to his car. Choking back a snort in disbelief at the odds of parking beside her, he watched her rummaging in her bag as he approached her.

From where he stood, he only saw a small part of her face, the pale skin, albeit flawless. Her blond hair was tied back in a ponytail, with a few stray strands tucked behind her ears. No earrings. He moved forward a bit. No rings on any of the fingers either. When she turned a bit, he was able to admire her deep blue eyes again. Indeed, beautiful, and yet underlined with troubling dark circles. He imagined for a moment what those eyes were hiding.

“So, what brings you to Melbourne?” he asked, noticing another little flinch.

Tamara met his gaze and for a beat, he was completely lost in her eyes. A smile tugged at his lips, but she returned to stare at the door.

“Business,” she whispered at last.

The sudden ache in his shoulder when he moved the bag, however, reminded him to make that call for a massage appointment. When he hung up, he lifted his eyes and not only found himself in front of the lift but also next to Tamara.

A dozen questions whirled through his head again. How she’d ignored his hand, yet more so, how intrigued he’d been by her stance or even her demeanour towards him. He was about to say something when the lift gave a soft ping and the doors opened. With a small smile, he stepped aside and waited for Tamara to enter first.

“Ground floor?”

Her reply was nothing more than a soft whisper. “Yes, please.”

A thousand things went through his head, yet nothing that could start a conversation. He tilted his head slightly towards her and as he watched her staring at the closing doors, he saw a little flinch.

Another chuckle. “It’s always at my place.”

He disconnected the call, regretting that he’d missed out on a good game with his mates.

Tyson had been a friend since kindergarten, and together with their friend Markus, they’d played football most weekends until Oliver had moved to the US for a few years because of his father’s job. Watching a local game, Oliver had learnt all about baseball and fallen in love with the sport. Unlike Ty, who played football with an AFL club in Melbourne and who earned close to half a million each year, Oliver’s income was a lot less glamorous. Markus had moved away from football as well and ended up as a goalie for one of the premier league soccer clubs in England. He’d made some big money during a three-year contract with an English club, but in the end, he had been too homesick and returned to Melbourne. Not that he’d ever admit to that. Even now in their late twenties, their friendship was as strong as it had been twenty-five years earlier. Sarah was the only girl in the friendship group. Although, she’d always been closer to Markus, Oliver and Ty cared for her as if she were their sister.

Oliver pondered whether he should head over to Ty’s anyway as he paced through the labyrinth of the clubhouse. Katie, Ty’s girlfriend, always had leftover dinner, and a bit of company never hurt.
