DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again into Ethan’s POV. It’s the start of school assembly.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

Ethan looked straight into a pair of beautiful blue eyes.
“Yes, he is. Don’t tell me he’s already in trouble?” he asked, noticing that instead of a smile he had a grin on his face.
The woman laughed softly. “No, not at all. I’m trying to put names to faces, and connect children to parents.”
He lifted a brow, well aware of who she was. After all, she’d been occupying his mind for a few days following the Christmas concert. He’d carefully asked around, but hadn’t been able to get a lot of information about her.
If any at all.
Not even Niall’s grandmother, who worked in the local newsagency had known much. From Melbourne… new teacher… cute little thing. As if he hadn’t noticed himself.
She dragged him back from his thoughts again. “Oh, sorry, I’m Addison Ryker. The new Grade Four teacher here this year.”
Ethan held out a hand. “Nice meeting you Addison Ryker. My name is Ethan Tomlin. Good to have you here at the school.”
She took his hand and everything inside him was on alert. Her touch was soft and gentle, her beautiful warm smile that went deep into her blue eyes. Close up, she looked even more attractive, sexier, than he remembered. Her black hair was neatly tied up in a ponytail. She wore a simple yellow summer dress with a scoop neck and sleeves, and cute little high heels.

DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again. A couple of weeks later, Addison has her first day at work, as a primary school teacher.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

She followed Jax, the Grade 6 teacher, and Mary, the Prep teacher, out of the staff room and along the hall to attend the first day assembly. The noise of the excited children made her smile and excitement filled her as well. Addison went into her classroom filled with twenty-something little children, dressed in the uniform of green, forty-something eyes staring at her in anticipation.

She sighed deeply and knelt in front of the children. “Okay, my little ducklings. I know you’re all excited, and actually so am I, but I’m hoping you’ll be on your best behaviour.” She took the hand of the girl at the very front. “Hello pumpkin. Can you show me the way to the assembly hall?”

Nodding her small head, the girl said eagerly, “Yes, Miss—”

Addison winked at the little girl. “My name is Miss Ryker.”

“Yes, Miss Ryker.”

“Let’s go pumpkin. We’ll be right behind you.”

Addison followed her little herd of children into the assembly hall and watched them as they gave little hand waves to parents and some grandparents. One of the boys high-fived a man and as she looked up, her heart almost skipped a beat.

It was the dad with no name from the Christmas concert.

The expression on her father’s face told her he wasn’t convinced, but he let it go.
The chapter Ryan was in the past. It was a closed book, placed into the very back corner of her shelf so it was easily forgotten.
“I hope he was reprimanded as well.”
“You have to have the last word, don’t you, Harold,” her mother said. “Addy’s moved on, so should you.”
He mumbled some more words, which made Addison smile. Ever the protective father.
She gazed across the ocean again, listening to the constant roar of the surf — her thoughts wandering off again to the school concert a few weeks earlier.
And the dad without a name.

She had no idea what she had she been thinking at the time she’d started to date him. It’d probably been his charm as well as the attention he’d given her. Addison had felt desired for the first time in her life.
Damn, she’d been so naïve. And stupid.
With a big exhale, she shook her head and whispered, “No.”
“Good. I hope he doesn’t know you’re here. I’ll—”
Ana placed a hand on her husband’s arm and her message to him was clear even unspoken. Leave it be.
A smile tugged at Addy’s lips. “We’re done.” She paused, leaned forward, and rested her arms on the table. “I’ve learnt my lesson and have moved on.” Her throat tightened and tears pooled in her eyes as she gazed across the water, watching the waves crashing over the rocks.
“I suppose he still has his job,” her father grumbled.
“It was my choice.”
“Choice or no choice—”
“Dad,” Addison interrupted him as she met Harry’s gaze. “Look at it this way. I got to move to this beautiful place. Remember Nan always said If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.” Her mouth curled in a smile. “It was meant to be.”

Only a little while later, Addison sat on the small veranda at the back of her house with her parents having their lunch, everyone enjoying the view.
“I can see your mother coming for a visit more often than you might like.”
Addison let out a little laugh.
“Oh, Harry. Don’t be like that. I love the sea and you know that. But I know not to overdo it with my visits,” her mother replied.
“That’s okay, Mum. You’re more than welcome here. I suppose it’ll be nice to have you come around once in a while.”
“Have you met anybody, yet, darling?”
She nodded. “Yes. Can’t you remember I told you of the Christmas concert a few weeks back? The teachers were lovely and very welcoming. I was also introduced to my class.”
“Oh, how wonderful,” her mother cooed.
“The children seem very well behaved and very nice. I even had the chance to talk to some of the parents. A few of them even offered to help me move.” She smiled as she remembered the various offers. It was a bit like in one of those perfect movies of the perfect town — she always tried to find a catch to these generous offers, but people in Fermosa Bay seemed genuinely nice.
Leaning back as she took a bite of her sandwich, she remembered one of the parents in particular.
A boy’s father.
She wasn’t able to recall where the mother had been, but yes, she remembered the dad vividly. Of course, she remembered him. He reminded her of her favourite actor with his tousled short dark hair, the intense blue eyes, and a toned physique that she’d been able to see his muscles moving under his shirt. Or his long legs, which moved so effortlessly with leisurely grace.
Good Lord those legs.
But she wasn’t able to remember his name.
And with a sigh of disappointment, she remembered he hadn’t offered any help.
“Are you all right?” her father asked.
Her gaze went over to the sea, and she watched the subtle movement of the water. Yes, she was all right, and she knew this was going to be a great year.
“Dad, I’m not sure how to explain this, but I think I just had one of those moments of contentment. I have a feeling Fermosa Bay will be good for me.”
Her mother placed a hand on her arm, smiling with understanding.
Yet, her dad went to destroy her moment of happiness, however unintentionally it might have been. “Heard from Ryan?”
It only took Addison to hear his name to feel nauseous. And sad. But above all, it made her anxious. The sudden swirl of emotions overwhelming her.

Ethan walked over to Emily, placed his arm around her shoulder, and placed a kiss on her forehead. She moved around to look at him, and he choked back a sigh at the sight of her. Her grief obvious in her eyes with her face red, blotchy, and slightly swollen, which he assumed was from all the crying. Connor hadn’t exaggerated when he’d said she took it the hardest.
“How are you, pumpkin?” he asked just above a whisper.
She shook her head.
“Is he really dead?” Nick asked against her chest in-between sobs.
Emily hugged him even tighter as more tears flowed down her cheeks. “Yes, honey. I’m afraid he is.”
Connor joined them. “How about we head inside,” he asked quietly.
Without any warning, Nick moved out of Emily’s embrace and looked at Connor. “I’m sorry about your dad,” he said, still sobbing. It tore Ethan apart, the ache to see his son in so much pain, but still remembering his manners.
Connor knelt in front of him, his struggle with emotions evident. “Thanks buddy. Jack made me promise to tell you how much he loved you. He wants you not to be sad for too long, because he thinks life is too short to be sad. And even though you can’t see him, he’ll always be around.”

Ethan loved the view and never got enough of it. He loved the contrast of the blue ocean meeting the luscious green of the forest. The long winding road through gigantic trees was leading right into Fermosa. Because Nick usually struggled with travel sickness coming down this route, it was probably a blessing that Nick was asleep.
Startled by the ringing of the phone, Ethan checked the ID, and pressed the Bluetooth button.
“Ethan speaking.”
“It’s Connor.”
Ethan’s heart sank, not ready, yet, for the conversation he was about to have. Another quick glance to the back told him that Nick was still asleep. It had been hard telling his son the news regarding Jack.
“How are you holding up?” he asked his friend.
There was a moment of silence before Connor finally said, “Emily’s struggling.”
Ethan exhaled a long, deep breath as he turned the corner for another near perfect view over Fermosa.

A smile tugged at Ethan Tomlin’s lips when he saw his son Nicholas through the rear view mirror in the back of the car. It must’ve been the most uncomfortable position, with his head leaning back against the booster seat, the neck flexed into an awkward position. And yet, he envied Nick for his little snooze. It’d been a bit of a rollercoaster twenty-four hours for them since receiving the bad news from home. Their drive into Christchurch earlier in the morning as well as the three and a bit hour flight back into Melbourne had been draining for both — emotionally as well as physically.
They’d spent ten days in New Zealand exploring the south island in a motorhome. It’d been a great adventure, and Nick had loved the different scenery, the adventures, and even discovered his love for fishing. Out of all places!
A couple of minutes later, Ethan was able to see Fermosa Bay as they emerged from the tunnel of trees. The small town nestled along the curving bay where it met the Indian Ocean. Fishing boats went and came from the sheltered harbour and as he drove along, he watched the stormy clouds along the line where the ocean met the sky. Born and raised in Fermosa, he’d considered it to be the best place to live and an even better place to raise his son.
