He drove along the gravel road, watching Zoe fussing over the small animal out of the corner of his eye. Looking into the rearview mirror and seeing the mother not taking her eyes off the small joey either, he got the impression she was smitten by the animal as well. He set the blinker to turn onto the main road and ten minutes later, he parked in a small car park. “The little white one yours?”

“Yes, thank you.” The relief in Lexie’s voice was evident.

Jesse switched off the engine and opened the car door when Zoe said, “What happens to the joey?”

“I’ll take him to the animal shelter in Alinta Bay.”

“Will I be able to visit him?”

He nodded, looked at Lexie and then back to Zoe. “Of course you can. I’ll give your mum the address and you can come in as often as you’d like to.”

“But who’s looking after him here in the car while you drive to the shelter,” she asked in a way only a young child can come up with. Innocence and worry mirrored in her eyes.

His mouth curved. “He’ll be fine on the seat, wrapped up in the blankets.”

The girl turned to look at her mother, “Mum. I can’t just leave him alone on the seat.”

“Sweetie, he’s in good hands with—”

“Jesse,” he helped.

“After all, Jesse is a Park Ranger and he knows how to handle this kind of situation.”

“But mu-um.”

Lexie blew out a shaky breath, and Jesse wished he could do something to help.

“Zoe, we should go. The joey needs to be cared for and the quicker we let the ranger take it to the shelter, the better its chances are of survival.”

“Can we follow him?”

She loves the feel of his skin beneath her hands …

Lexie Marshall packs up and moves 3,000 km east with her daughter Zoe, to forget and move on. Now, all that matters is her daughter and her new job. She tries hard to stay focussed, but the sexy and extremely kind park ranger, Jesse, is not making it easy. And when her husband shows up in the small coastal town creating chaos, all she can do is hang on and trust her new friends.

After his last girlfriend walked out on him, Jesse Parker is doing just fine on his own. Until his accidental meeting with single mother Lexie, when he rescues her and her daughter from getting lost in the forest. But when her past catches up with her, he is right in the middle of it all and it might ruin his career.

Will returning to her old life be the only chance to save his career?

“Keep him nice and warm,” he explained. “Joeys need lots of warmth.”

She bobbed her head eagerly again as she carefully wrapped the little animal into the blankets. “He’s so tiny. Will he be okay?”

“We’ll take him to the animal shelter and they’ll look after him. He appears in good shape. I’d say his chances are better than average.”

Lexie moved to the middle of the back seat and leaned in. “Are we allowed to touch him?”

Amused by the two hovering over the joey, he nodded. “I’ll be two minutes. Just have to move the mama a little farther off the road.”

“Take your time,” Lexie replied without looking at him, her full attention now on the little survivor.

It didn’t take Jesse long to move the roo, before he returned to the car. A smile tugged at his lips when he saw Zoe cuddling the small animal in a very protective way.

“Okay, let’s get you to your car. It’s not far from here.” He shifted in his seat and said to Lexie, “I’m sorry to interrupt this moment of bonding, but I’ll need you to buckle up again.”

With a smile she sat back and agreed, “Of course.”

Jesse blew out a long breath as he rubbed his hands over his face. It wasn’t the first time that he’d found a dead kangaroo with the joey still alive, but that didn’t make it any easier. He knelt and inspected both mama and child. The little joey was looking good considering the situation. With a sense of frustration and sadness, he stood and returned to the car where he opened the door on Zoe’s side.

“I was hoping Zoe would be able to help me.”

Both, Lexie and her daughter, stared at him. “How?” Lexie asked with suspicion in her voice.

He nodded, knowing he should’ve explained himself more. “The kangaroo is dead, but she has a little joey still alive inside her pouch.” Their faces relaxed and something like sympathy took over. “It’d be a great help, if Zoe could sit at the front with a few blankets and hold on to the little fella until we get to your car.”

The girl’s eyes beamed and her head bobbed up and down in excitement while she unbuckled her seat belt at the same time. He hoped this favour would break the awkward silence between them all while driving to their car.

“Will that be okay?” he asked Lexie.

“Absolutely,” she replied with a smile.

He wasn’t able to move aside fast enough for Zoe to swap to the front. With a chuckle, he stepped to the back of the car, opened the boot, and retrieved a few blankets which he handed to Zoe. Then he returned to the joey and carefully took him out of the pouch before placing him into the blankets on the girl’s lap.

“Okay. Let’s get this roadkill off the road and then get you back to your car.”

Jesse helped Lexie and her daughter into the car and then slid behind the steering wheel. While he started the engine, he considered starting a conversation, but decided against it. Nothing personal, but it’d been a busy day already, and he was too tired to come up with anything to say. They drove quietly along the forest road. It didn’t take him long until he located the dead kangaroo farther up the path. Shaking his head, he knew straight away it was a hit and run incident, with the driver leaving without moving the animal. He slowed and parked in front of it.

“I’ll be a couple of minutes,” he explained, looking at Lexie via the mirror.

With a slow nod, she asked, “Is it dead?”

He swivelled in his seat to face her. “Put it this way. I hope it is, otherwise I might have to put it down.”

The expression on her face told him that she wasn’t fond of the idea either. Neither was he. In one quick movement, he turned, opened the door, and got out. It took him only a few steps to get to the kangaroo. The animal was dead all right, but when he stood right next to it, he looked right into his next problem.

A little joey was moving inside the pouch, still alive.

Jesse Parker scratched the back of his neck. The situation in front of him had so many things wrong with it. The fact that the young girl had stopped him in his car in the middle of nowhere didn’t sit well with him, but on the flipside, he was glad she had, because organising a search party wouldn’t have been on his favourite things to do for a Friday afternoon either. God only knew whether anybody would’ve noticed that they’d been gone for a while, considering they were new in town. He made a mental note to ask Melody about the two. She’d given them the directions to the Cook Waterfall carpark; he was sure she’d know a little more about them.

And then there was the mother, who despite her shortness of breath and the obvious lack of fitness looked still incredible and that did something to him, which he wasn’t sure how to handle or even interpret.

The mother. He didn’t even know her name.

Holding out his hand, he said, “Jesse Parker. Nice meeting you.”

She looked up at him, and a slow smile spread across her face, but she ignored his hand. “Nice meeting you, too. More than nice, if I may say so. I’m Lexie and this is my daughter Zoe.”

Sliding his hand into his pants pocket, he turned to look at Zoe and said with a wink, “I’m not lecturing you, but please promise me not making a habit out of stopping strange cars.”

The girl nodded enthusiastically. “I promise.”
