DEFYING RULES

A little reminder in the last post, Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

“Do you know Ethan?”
She blinked once or twice, surprised by Nick’s dad emerging out of the car, as well as the fact that he was known to the police.
Was that good?
Or bad?
“He’s a school parent. I see him sometimes at school. His son is in my class,” she replied with a little smile on her lips.
“Little Nick’s one of your students?”
She noticed the change of expression on his face with a gleam in his eyes and nodded, then moved her head and stared at Ethan as he came closer.
“We’ll be in contact, Ms Ryker.”
Again, she simply nodded and watched him walk to his car.
The two men met half way down her driveway near the police car and shook hands. Their voice carried softly with the little afternoon breeze, but Addy wasn’t able to decipher any words. Not sure whether to wait for Ethan or to go inside, she decided on waiting.
After the two men said their goodbyes, Ethan met her gaze and a slow smile curved up the corners of his mouth. It seemed like an eternity until he made it to the door, and she noticed her pulse racing despite her best efforts to calm herself down with a few deep breaths and a count from twenty down to one. He was attractive, no doubt, but she didn’t know him and was surprised by her body’s reaction to him. After all, he wasn’t the first attractive man she’d ever met.
And, he was a school parent. A big reason to not think of him as an attractive man. Or think of him at all.

♠♠ OUT NOW ♠♠

It all started with New Beginnings and continues on in More Beginnings. These are stories of the Levesque sisters and More Beginnings delves into the story of Mia.
Again, Ms. Blobel shares her talent of writing a suspenseful, romantic, emotional and terrific book. I was captured at the first page and couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next.
This book also brings us the story of Zach, Mia’s friend, and his emotional decisions he must make for happiness.
Bravo to Ms. Blobel on another book that will rest up with my favorites!

Today’s Hook:

She shook her head. “I’d better not ask for any more details.” She pointed towards the north side of the oval. “Sophie’s told me about Mia spending the weekend with her babysitter, but honestly I had no idea—” She paused and looked towards the other side of the sports ground. “Anyway, I’m about to head over to shot-put.”
He quickly followed step. “As in you had no idea a babysitter could be a man?”
She smiled. Fair dinkum, and he liked her smile.
But halfway to shot-put she was stopped by a student and apologised as she directed him to a group of young girls.
He waved his hands in a gesture of thanks.
As he strolled over to the group, his mouth curled into a grin. Shot-put wasn’t what he’d call one of Mia’s best events. She did well, but it was obvious she enjoyed the company of her friends and the constant chatter a lot more. Zach couldn’t help but let his eyes wander around the big sports oval to spot the dragon, or better known to him now as the beautiful Natasha. But no such luck. It seemed as if she’d disappeared, and disappointment settled over him.

BLURB:
Zach Taylor, an escort in Sydney, living in Hobart, enlists the help of Natasha Peterson when his teenage friend, Mia, runs away. He soon finds out that the ‘dragon’ is really more of a kitten. And although Natasha, Mia’s teacher, is attracted to him as well, she has her own problems to deal with, not to mention her initial reaction to Zach’s occupation.

Will Zach’s job keep him from a chance to be with Natasha?

Life is good for teenager Mia Levesque. But when Darren Schuster shows up in Hobart, she knows something is up once Sophie and Mark cut their weekend away short and rush home in the middle of the night. When Sophie won’t answer Mia’s questions, emotions run high, and Zach confirms Darren’s identity to Mia. Disappointed, angry, and feeling alone, Mia runs away.

Will life settle back into a routine for Mia once she finds out about the stranger in her life?

DEFYING RULES

After some whale watching and serious relaxation in South Australia, I’m back with more snippets ☺ A little reminder in the last post, Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in.

Experiencing chills down her spine, she blew out a long sigh of relief when she finally heard the police siren approaching only a few minutes later.
What came next was like a blur for Addy. Over the next hour or so, the police inspected the house and asked lots of questions. At some stage, she followed them inside the house. Tentatively, though, as if she was intruding on someone else’s privacy. She shuddered at the thought that someone had gone through her belongings, touched her things. She felt violated and exposed. Room by room, she checked whether anything was missing, a police officer always close by, making notes.
But there wasn’t anything unaccounted for as far as Addy was able to see. She signed a statement before the police was packing up, about to leave.
Exhausted and drained, she stood at the front of the door with Officer Clark, hoping for him to leave soon as well. All she wanted was to crawl into a corner and cry.
“William should be around within the next twenty minutes to fix the front door.”
“Thank you.” She was still overwhelmed by what happened, so it sounded more like a whisper than her normal voice.
“Will you be okay?” he asked.
She nodded, thinking she was going to call her parents to ask them to come earlier than planned.
Officer Clark handed her his card. They shook hands when, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a car pulling up in front of her house. It was an old beaten up pick-up truck, and although it looked familiar, her brain gave her a complete blank as to whom it might belong to. Not that she was good with cars at the best of times. They were one or the other colour and that was as far as her knowledge went. Officer Clark obviously noticed the car as well and gave her a questioning look.
“Do you know Ethan?”

Today’s Hook:

Zach was still annoyed about the whole Josh-coming-over request, but even the cheap coffee from the sportsground canteen did its best to awaken his sleepy brain cells.
He knew he’d be in trouble with Soph, if he said yes. He cursed, threw the disposable cup into the trash bin, and pulled out the information sheet about the day’s events. With long steps, he strode towards the oval and tried to find Mia amongst the hundreds of students. He shook his head. How was he supposed to find her when she wore the same outfit as everyone else? He glanced around and found a non-uniformed, good-looking woman. A smile tugged at his lips.
“Excuse me,” he said as he came closer. “Year eight girls’ shot-put. Any idea where that could be?”
“Who’re you after?” she asked, and for a moment all he did was stare.
At her.
Close up, she looked even better. Nicer. Sexier.
Medium height. Her black hair cut short, and those eyes! The dark blue colour mesmerised him. And her graceful and warm smile made him like her instantly.
She studied him considerately, obviously expecting some sort of response.
“Right.” He scratched the back of his head. “Mia. Mia Levesque.”
Zach drew in his lips as he watched her studying him. And she did. Carefully, from top to as low as she could without being obvious. Bad attempt though, and he looked down to disguise his smile.
Then he saw her hand appear in front of him. “Hi, I’m Natasha Peterson. Mia’s English teacher.”
Well, if that didn’t make his eyebrow twitch in surprise.
“You don’t look like a dragon at all.”
She laughed. “I hope not.”
Shaking her hand he said, “Zach Taylor, Mia’s babysitter.”
With a clear frown and her chin tilted slightly higher, she studied him again. But then her gaze moved into the distance before turning back to him. “Babysitter, eh?”

DEFYING RULES

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again into Addy’s POV. She’s arrived at home after a day at the school

Once she arrived home, she got out of her car and grabbed the mail from the letterbox before walking towards the door. The mobile buzzed in her bag and as she juggled the mail and the phone with both hands, she swiped the green answer key before the call would go to the answering service.
“Hello darling. How are you?”
A rush of warmth spread through Addy. She missed her mother and was looking forward to her visit over the following weekend. As much as she loved living in Fermosa Bay, being away from her parents was hard to get used to. Despite reminding herself that in her mid-twenty she shouldn’t fret so much about being away from her parents, she liked to think that it was because of their great relationship. After all, she was their only child. Her mother was unable to have more children after complications during her birth.
“I’m doing well. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday night.”
Her mother exhaled a small sigh. “Not happy?”
The question took her by surprise. Yes, she was happy in Fermosa. Of course, she didn’t expect to make half a dozen friends over night, but she missed a bit of company. Images of Ethan popped into her mind, and a little shiver ran down her spine. She’d seen him several times over the last few weeks when he picked up his son, but kept her distance, knowing how she ended up in Fermosa Bay in the first place. And yet, there was the awareness inside — or was it a hormone? — that nagged at her constantly hoping to have another conversation with him again.
In a bad attempt to focus on something else than Ethan, she walked back to the car, rearranged the mail in her hands, and took her bag from inside. “Of course, I’m happy. The children are gorgeous and the other teachers really nice.”
“Making friends?”
“Mu-um. That doesn’t happen overnight, but yes, I’ve been out with some girls and will start going to a book club next week.”
“How wonderful.”
“Anyway, mum, I only just got home. Was there anything in particular you want to tell me?” She added with a soft laugh, “‘Cause I haven’t even made it into the house, yet.”
“I’m sorry darling. No, I just called for a chitchat. You get inside, and I’ll see you on Friday. Can’t wait. Love you, Addy.”
“Love you more, Mum.”
She disconnected the call and managed to slip her phone into the bag. Miraculously, she was able to retrieve her keys without dropping anything. Then she stopped short of inserting the key into the door lock when she noticed it broken with the front door standing a few centimetres open. Her instincts told her to run, but she stood motionless. Slowly straightening up with her keys in her hand, she stared at the gap seeing a few of her belongings spread all over the floor. Listening. Yet, she wasn’t sure what for, though, scared there might be someone moving around inside. Instantly, an involuntarily wave of goose bumps crawled up her spine at the prospect the intruder was still in the house. With a flicker of fear rushing through her, she gave the door a little push. Her heart began to beat erratically, pulsing in her throat. Panicking, she ran back to the car while she retrieved the phone from her bag again. It took her three attempts to do the simple task of pressing zero three times and hit the talk button. With her heart still pounding, Addy huddled behind the car as she gave the police all the information, initially vague on details until she was calmed by the voice on the other end.

“You’ll take me, won’t you?”
He gave a small nod. “Yup.”
Zach lived across the road from Sophie and Mia Levesque. The sisters had moved into Sixty-Four Chestnut Avenue six years earlier. He’d shared a hot kiss with Sophie in the early days, but in the end, it was Mark she’d fallen in love with.
“Will what’s-his-name be there?”
Mia did the eye-rolling thing again. “Josh. Yes he will. Remember, he’s in my class.”
Shaking his head with amusement, Zach replied, “Pumpkin, just because what’s-his-name is in your class ain’t meanin’ he’s participating in a sports day.”
“Doesn’t mean.”
“Beg yours?”
She took a deep breath. “It’s doesn’t mean and not ain’t meaning. You know it drives Soph mad when you use the American lingo.”
He turned to look at her. “I honestly have no idea how I’ve survived the last few years with you girls across the road.”

Ethan looked straight into a pair of beautiful blue eyes.
“Yes, he is. Don’t tell me he’s already in trouble?” he asked, noticing that instead of a smile he had a grin on his face.
The woman laughed softly. “No, not at all. I’m trying to put names to faces, and connect children to parents.”
He lifted a brow, well aware of who she was. After all, she’d been occupying his mind for a few days following the Christmas concert. He’d carefully asked around, but hadn’t been able to get a lot of information about her.
If any at all.
Not even Niall’s grandmother, who worked in the local newsagency had known much. From Melbourne… new teacher… cute little thing. As if he hadn’t noticed himself.
She dragged him back from his thoughts again. “Oh, sorry, I’m Addison Ryker. The new Grade Four teacher here this year.”
Ethan held out a hand. “Nice meeting you Addison Ryker. My name is Ethan Tomlin. Good to have you here at the school.”
She took his hand and everything inside him was on alert. Her touch was soft and gentle, her beautiful warm smile that went deep into her blue eyes. Close up, she looked even more attractive, sexier, than he remembered. Her black hair was neatly tied up in a ponytail. She wore a simple yellow summer dress with a scoop neck and sleeves, and cute little high heels.

Today’s hook

He placed his arm around her and drew her in a bit closer. “Have you talked to Soph about your teacher?”
She nodded. “Yes. Her reply was that for most fourteen-year-old girls teachers seem like dragons. She still remembers her science teacher who gave her a hard time.” She paused for a moment. “She blames it on my hormones because she thinks,” Mia snorted and then continued with an exaggerated voice, “Miss Peterson is a really nice person.”
He chuckled, which earned him a momentary glare from Mia.
With a shrug of his left shoulder, he commented, “I s’pose she has a point.”
Rolling her eyes, she moved away from him again. “Too hot for sentiments like that.”
A smile tugged at his lips. She had come a long way from when he had first met her. That’d been six years earlier, and she’d been only eight. Eight years old with already enough character for three teenagers combined. But he’d liked her from the moment he’d met her. He had been helping the girls find some stuff in their attic when he had mistaken her for Sophie’s daughter. With hands on hips, she’d said to him, “Do I look like her daughter? I mean, seriously.”

♥♦♥  EXCERPT ♥♦♥

Zach Taylor’s young neighbour, Mia, let out a long sigh as she joined him on his front porch and sat next to him on the swing. Enjoying a cool lemonade, he invited her to grab a soft drink from the fridge as well. It was a warm summer day, and the air showed no sign of cooling down. A lot of people in Hobart were weary of the unusual hot spell for the very southern Australian city.
With another hefty sigh, Mia raked through her long, blond hair and stared into the distance. “Honestly, Zach, she’s a dragon. I’m sure she does it on purpose. She doesn’t like me. She thinks I’m spoilt.”
The dragon in question was Miss Peterson, Mia’s high school English teacher. There was no doubt that Mia liked school, and she enjoyed her classes. And even though English wasn’t her worst subject, it certainly was the toughest one, with Miss Peterson piling on homework one after the other.
Zach took a sip of his drink before he replied, “Hey, pumpkin, settle down. What’s that supposed to mean you’re ‘spoilt’?”
She lifted her shoulder in a slight shrug. “You know!”
Raising his brows, he replied, “Actually I don’t know! Isn’t she Sophie’s good friend?”
Another shrug. “Kind of, I suppose. They used to do the boxing stuff together, and since Soph’s carrying a baby, they go and enjoy coffee and cake instead every once in a while.”
Ignoring his chuckle, she went inside and helped herself to cold lemonade. She opened the can with a simple click as she returned outside and took a long sip.

For today’s snippet I moved a little forward again. A couple of weeks later, Addison has her first day at work, as a primary school teacher.

She followed Jax, the Grade 6 teacher, and Mary, the Prep teacher, out of the staff room and along the hall to attend the first day assembly. The noise of the excited children made her smile and excitement filled her as well. Addison went into her classroom filled with twenty-something little children, dressed in the uniform of green, forty-something eyes staring at her in anticipation.

She sighed deeply and knelt in front of the children. “Okay, my little ducklings. I know you’re all excited, and actually so am I, but I’m hoping you’ll be on your best behaviour.” She took the hand of the girl at the very front. “Hello pumpkin. Can you show me the way to the assembly hall?”

Nodding her small head, the girl said eagerly, “Yes, Miss—”

Addison winked at the little girl. “My name is Miss Ryker.”

“Yes, Miss Ryker.”

“Let’s go pumpkin. We’ll be right behind you.”

Addison followed her little herd of children into the assembly hall and watched them as they gave little hand waves to parents and some grandparents. One of the boys high-fived a man and as she looked up, her heart almost skipped a beat.

It was the dad with no name from the Christmas concert.
