This week’s Hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE
by Iris Blobel

Dylan pinched the bridge of his nose and slid behind the wheel of his car, still confused by what had happened in the last twenty minutes. No doubt Lani Dekker was an interesting person. He shook that thought away. Interesting? How on earth was he able to make that judgement after only a few minutes of a chaotic conversation where lots had been implied and little had been said? Her reason for being here was to see Toby, and that in itself made her an interesting person. It was as simple as that. Plus, she had walked all the way from the main road and hadn’t once complained about her host being absent. Yes, she had been taken aback, but not annoyed. That made her interesting as well.

Blurb:

The discovery of her mother’s diaries unravels a secret which sends Lani on a journey to New Zealand …

She lost her mother in an accident. Now, Lani Dekker is determined to meet the man who, according to her mother’s diaries, is her father. He’s not what she expected, a bit on the extravagant side, but she soon warms up to him, thanks no less to Dylan, her father’s neighbour. Despite her attraction to Dylan, she can’t figure out whether he’s a friend or foe.

Dylan Harper is merely going through the daily motions after his wife died in a ski crash. That is, until his life is turned upside down by the arrival of his neighbour’s daughter. Their attraction is instant, even more so when they wake up in the same bed after an earthquake. However, it’s her accusation that his interest in her involves her father’s money rather than their mutual magnetism that derails their newfound bond.

Will finding the truth about her parents be a chance for Lani and Dylan to overcome their differences?

Today’s Snippet

As she reached for her underwear, the door opened. Jerking to a straight upright stance, ignoring the hammering in her chest, she stared for a second. A scream was stuck in her throat, almost choking her, she tried to let it out but in vain. Instinctively, she grabbed the soap and threw it at the person standing in the door.

The man didn’t budge.

She looked around, grabbed for her face washer, and threw that at him as well, even as she admitted to herself about the uselessness of the piece of cloth.

He caught it and a frown crossed his face. “Will you stop it?”

Finally able to, she shouted at the top of her voice. “Out! Get out!”

But he only cocked a lazy brow at her.

Holding on to the towel with one hand, she searched for something else to throw at him. “Who are you? What are you doing here?”

He raised his other brow as well. “Me?”

Although the steady drumming of her heartbeat still pulsed in her ears, the initial scare inside her abated. Despite a startling tingle tiptoeing down her spine and worry washing over her, her feet remained rooted to the floor, because there was something about him that didn’t scream danger to her. “Can you see anybody else here?” There could be no mistaking the hard note of annoyance in her voice.

His gaze flicked down to her chest where it paused for a moment before their eyes met again. Or was he checking out her scar? Awareness came over her, and she wished she had something to cover it up with.

And finally, he told her the reason of his intrusion. “I own the house.”

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE
by Iris Blobel

Was she going headfirst into a wall?

She shook the notion away. Everything was going to be fine, after all, he was her father.

Despite being exhausted, it took Lani a long time to fall asleep. So many things were going around in her head that her mind wasn’t able to calm. On top of that, every little noise in the house made her jerk and listen, resulting in a big lack of sleep.

Her emotions were going into overdrive. Yes, she finally was in New Zealand, however, an anxiety about meeting Tobias, her father, grew intensely within her.

Taking in a few long breaths, she reached for the light before searching for the photo of her mother and Tobias. It didn’t take long before she retrieved it from her jacket. She studied him and traced his face with her finger. The man next to her mother had dark curly hair, dark eyes, and a solid build. In her diary, her mother had described him as having chocolate brown eyes, thin lips, and dark chest hair.

Lani let out a soft snort. Clearly, she didn’t have the red hair from him, however, she could blame him for her wild curls.

Today’s Snippet

Molly stepped into her neighbour’s shower and let the warm water run over her body. It’d been a busy couple of days since her house had flooded. She’d managed to finish the website design for the Sydney company. That was well and truly before the deadline and that gave her two or three days before they might come back with any queries or requests for changes. She rumbled through her mental calendar, knowing it should be enough time to get most of the things in her house organised before she was able to move back again.

Annoyance that she hadn’t looked after the gutters more ate away at her. It was going to be a few months until the house would be in good order again. At least she had insurance and didn’t have to worry about expenses. The builder from the other day had assured her, the study and the lounge room should only have carpet damage. However, her bedroom and the spare room would be more involved. They’d been able to move most of the furniture into the garage with little or no harm. A little sigh escaped her as she thought about what lay ahead, but she was grateful for having Mrs. Fielding’s house to stay in. Molly was sure the older woman wouldn’t have minded.

She turned the water off and grabbed her towel before stepping out of the shower. It’d been another lovely, but hot day, and she was grateful Mrs. Fielding’s lawyer left the power and water on. Apparently, he’d heard back from her grandson, who was due to arrive in a few days. Sadness went through her that Mrs. Fielding’s own grandson hadn’t come to her funeral. She had always talked with so much love about him, and he didn’t even have the respect to show up. She was going to give him a good piece of her mind when he’d arrive.

As she reached for her underwear, the door opened.

“Tell Grandpa, I agree. I don’t have to meet him.” She paused for a beat. “But I want to.”

“Darling, don’t take it to heart. He feels he’s being replaced by—”

“No one could ever replace him,” Lani emphasised. “Grandpa is my one and only.”

Her grandmother let out a soft sigh but didn’t reply.

Lani massaged her forehead. “I’d better go and get a good sleep. It’s going to be a big couple of days.”

“I hope all goes well. We have our fingers crossed.”

“Thank you.”

She disconnected the call, checked her email, and switched off the phone. On second thought, she turned it on again but muted it.

Fingers crossed. Her grandmother’s words popped into her mind. Dylan had said something along that line as well. Why? What was she missing? Was she going headfirst into a wall?

Today’s Snippet

A heavy silence hung between them for a long beat until his friend picked up the conversation again. “No problems, buddy. We’ll make it work.”

“Thanks. I really appreciate it.”

He hung up, checked the weather as well, and hoped he was going to be on his way home the next day. A thought popped into his mind, and he reached for his phone again. Graham answered almost straight away.

“Sorry Graham, I’m not really sure about the time difference, but I have a quick question.”

“Shoot.”

The short answer made Noah believe it must have been some ungodly hour in Australia. “Does my mother know?”

Graham blew out a breath. “No. I’m sorry, but I haven’t tracked her down, yet.”

That surprised him. After all, the lawyer had been able to track him down in Alaska. “Isn’t she in France?”

“Not anymore, it seems.”

“Shit.”

Graham choked back a snort. “Not the word I’d use, but I agree.”

Noah ignored the subtle chide. “Is that something you’ll work on?”

“Yes.”

Noah hesitated, not sure what else to say. “Okay. I’ll see you soon.” He hung up and snatched a piece of paper from his desk to jot down all the things he had to do in the next twenty-four hours.

Not much time.

This week’s hook …

IN THE SHADOWS OF A LIE

by Iris Blobel

Lani let out a snort, knowing that he hadn’t used Tobias’ name but a derogative word she’d rather not repeat. “Tell him he’s too impatient, just like Mum used to be. I’ve only just arrived.”

A moment of silence followed. The loss of her mother, her grandparents’ daughter still raw for all of them.

She heard her grandfather again. “You don’t have to meet him.”

A stab of pain went through her. Her grandpa had always been her best friend, the person she went to when trouble surrounded her, or during times she had her heart broken, and recently after she had lost her job and had to move in with grandparents because she had run out of money. Most of all, he’d been her rock when her mother had died in a plane crash six months ago. They’d spent hours on the couch watching TV or sat outside under the pergola watching the birds and the breeze rustling through the trees. They hugged, cuddled, often in silence, sometimes reminiscing stories of her mum. They cried often and they laughed as well. No way could she have coped without him. He’d been there for her despite grieving the loss of his child.

“Tell Grandpa, I agree. I don’t have to meet him.” She paused for a beat. “But I want to.”
