DEFYING RULES

A little reminder in the last post, Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

And, he was a school parent. A big reason to not think of him as an attractive man. Or think of him at all.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
With heat creeping up her cheeks, she figured he meant the break in and nodded.
He scratched the back of his head. “I’m not your nosy neighbour, don’t get me wrong, but I saw the police and remembered Nick telling me your family’s in Melbourne. Anything I can help you with?”
She sighed inwardly. Not only attractive, but very generous as well. Shaking her head, she replied, “I’m fine, but I appreciate your offer.”
“Will you be all right to stay here on your own? I’m sure we can organise a room at the hotel for a few nights.”
Something stirred inside. His caring nature and his generosity were so overwhelming, and possibly the stress of the previous two hours, she didn’t want to but she started to cry.
Ethan stepped even closer and gently drew her into an embrace. Common sense told her to pull away, but it was such a relief to finally be able to let out all the pent-up emotions. The tension, the fear, and her body’s betrayal at the wrong time.

4 starsThe Romance Review – NEW BEGINNINGS is a very emotional read, one that is heartwarming as well as heart wrenching. It gives you hope in the act of human kindness and that good things do happen to good people. I highly recommend this book.

Today’s hook

She shook her head without looking at him. It was increasingly apparent to her that either there had been no details on them in the file, or he had been too busy to read it as well.
“You’re Mia’s guardian?”
“Yes,” she replied and gently placed a kiss on her sister’s forehead.
He nodded, and by the way he stared ahead, Sophie knew he was pondering her answers.
“I’m Mark.”
“Pardon me?”
Through the mirror, she saw his eyes focussed on them. “My name is Mark. Nobody actually calls me Mr. O’Connor. It feels like my dad is around when I hear that term.”
A smile twitched at the corner of Sophie’s mouth, but she remained silent.
“Ever been to Hobart before?”
She shook her head.
Mark concentrated on the traffic again. He did a couple of turns, and Sophie’s excitement grew stronger. Deep inside she hoped for the house to be close by. It was a beautiful area. So much green around. So many beautiful and colourful gardens.
With a pounding heart, she was glued to the window, her palms moist with sweat.
And then he stopped in front of number sixty-four.

The chance to start life all over with the help of a stranger.Twenty-two-year-old

Sophie Levesque has been guardian to her eight-year-old sister Mia since their mother’s death a few years ago, and it hasn’t been easy. Luck comes their way when they inherit a small house in Hobart. Problem is, though, they don’t know and have never heard of Clara Bellinger, the testator. Settling into their new life, Sophie is still afraid it’s all a mistake.

Mark O’Connor, attorney in Hobart and the bearer of the good news for Sophie and Mia, curses himself for the lack of information about the testator. However, researching the questions gives him an opportunity to see Sophie again, and the more time he spends with the two, the more he realises that his life is missing something. And it’s not his casual lover Linda.

But then there’s Zach, Sophie’s sexy neighbour from across the road… and a very good friend of Clara’s.

Will unravelling the mystery unravel Sophie and Mark’s promise of a future?

5star Review:

I’ve always enjoyed Ms. Blobel’s novels, but I adored New Beginnings. This is a
feel good story centered on love and hope, Sophie’s dedication to her younger sister, Mia, is incredible. The child is the center of her universe and there’s nothing she won’t do for her. Concerned the recent inheritance is all a mistake, Sophie wants to know more about the woman who gave them a home. Helping her is a drop-dead gorgeous attorney and the handsome, hunky neighbor. Sophie’s journey of discovery is a beautiful one, and when she gets her answers, she finds the last thing she ever thought she would–love. Looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

Wow…what a tangled web we weave! Sophie has got it coming in all directions with the mystery of the testator. These are the type of stories that I love…since it has a bit of everything in it. Not only do we get a bit of a love triangle but add some mystery and thriller to it. Now, that makes a perfect book by Ms. Blobel! But let me remind you that this is nothing new since I find myself always wrapped up in this author’s writing since she writes with emotion and feelings. Whether it be anger, happiness, sadness – you name it…Ms. Blobel gives us the whole package in her stories!

FLY WITH ME

This is Tiffany’s story, who receives a call from the police one morning forcing her to deal with a chapter from her past, which she is unhappy to revisit. When she calls her friend Dylan, it’s Mat from New Zealand she ends up talking to.

This is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

Tiffany went into the kitchen for a drink and as she filled and switched on the kettle, her mind went back to the conversation with Dylan’s friend Mat. She’d enjoyed the brief, although bizarre, conversation. His voice had been so happy and full of energy, it had taken her mind off her problem within only a few minutes. Something she hadn’t been able to achieve with the bath she’d taken later that morning. The whole hysteria from the previous year had crept up, leaving her anxious, tense, and with a headache. A nice cup of tea would hopefully do the trick. She thought of Mat’s laugh and her mouth curled in response. It’d been a deep hearty laugh. One of those laughs that could be contagious to anyone who heard it. Closing her eyes, she tried to remember whether Dylan had ever mentioned Mat’s name, but as much as she tried, she wasn’t able to recall ever hearing about a friend from New Zealand.

The whistling of the kettle drew her back from her thoughts, and she poured the water into her cup. Dipping the teabag in and out of the water, she recalled her conversation with Dylan.

“What’s up Tiff? I’ve got about three missed calls here.”

Relief rushed through her like a tidal wave, almost catching her breath. After all, most of her problems were half as bad once Dylan was there to help. Despite being Liam, her brother’s best friend, Dylan and Tiffany had become close during the year Liam had gone to London for a gap year.

“Why haven’t you ever told me about Mat?” Stunned by her own question, she slapped her forehead a couple of times wondering where the question had come from— especially as matters more important were on hand.

There was a quiet chuckle on the other end of the line and a bout of embarrassment rushed through her.

He thought of his friend’s comment about Tiffany’s rough year. Worry shot through him, and he wished he’d copied her number to his phone.

The sound of her voice was still playing in his head. A tone that stoked angst and concern.

Exhaling a long breath, Mat focussed back to the problem at hand and listened to the GPS directions — as well as following them. Thankfully, within only half an hour he found himself in an office opposite Karen Young, the representative of an Australian travelling agency.

A few months earlier, Mat had lost the coin toss between him and his partner Adam, and it was him now who was in Melbourne trying to negotiate a deal with Karen.

Mat and Adam had started their helicopter business five years ago in Fox Glacier, New Zealand. They’d liked the idea of doing what they loved every day and meeting people from all over the world at the same time. Now they flew hundreds of tourists to the summit of the glacier or hunters and hikers to inaccessible huts on the top of the mountains.

Today he was here to negotiate a deal to be part of a travel package for tourists, which included another venture in Queenstown, his hometown. He stepped into her small office, instantly overcome by some mild claustrophobia when he saw a small window with no view, but showing the walls of the building next door. Inhaling a breath, he forced himself to take in the rest of the office which was nicely decorated, with framed photos from all over the world.

Including his beloved Queenstown.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Mat’s laughter echoed in the small car as he turned off the engine and got out. With a few long strides, he headed towards the café. “Does Jess know about her?”
There was a groan on the other end of the line. “You start any rumours and I will kill you.”
As he stepped inside the cafe, Mat replied, “In all seriousness, mate, Tiffany was desperate to talk to you. You’d better give her a call, aye.”
“I’ve already talked to her, but I don’t—”
“I’m glad she was able to get hold of you. It was obvious she needed to talk to you.”
Mat held his phone away for a moment, smiled at the young woman behind the counter, and ordered his coffee.
”You’re still there?” Dylan asked with a loud voice.
Mat shook his head with a smile and explained. “Mate, I’d say even in Australia it’s considered rude to talk on the phone while ordering your coffee.”
His friend’s resigned sigh gave him another chuckle.
“Mate, if you’ve already talked to her, we’re all good, aye.”
“To be frank, I’m completely lost here. How the hell do you know about Tiff? Give me the courtesy and give me a quick run down of what’s happened.”

The GPS voice in Matiu Apanui’s car had as little of a clue as he did about the directions how to get to his meeting place and after only half an hour he was still on the western side of Melbourne instead of in the city. The explanation was as simple as Tiffany was on his mind. He replayed the phone conversation repeatedly in his head. It was clear to him something must’ve upset her. Even though she’d relaxed during their short conversation, he’d been able to sense the tension in her voice.
“Shit,” he shouted as he pressed the speed dial button on his phone, remembering he’d never left a note for his friend.
“Mate, where are you?” Dylan asked by way of answering.
“I have no idea. Near a big park. Looks pretty with the tree alongside the walking tracks. Had no idea Melbourne had all these deciduous trees—”
“Mat!”
“The lovely GPS lady took me on a tourist tour first it seems. I’m considering stopping for a coffee and reboot her at the same time.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Mat noticed the frustration in his friend’s voice and asked bluntly, “Tell me about your girlfriend.”

“We need to talk to you. I can assure you you’re not in trouble, but we need your help.” Then he squeezed the card into the small gap of the doorframe. “This is my number. Please call in when you have somebody with you, and we can have a talk.”
She nodded, appreciating him leaving the card in the door and not asking her to open up.
“Will you be okay, Miss Brooks?” Jones asked again.
The simple answer was no, but again, she nodded, hoping for this nightmare to end soon.
Senior Constable Jones and Sergeant Harris left, and Tiffany watched them drive off in their car. Only then did she close the door, leaned against it, and slid down, not able to hold back the flood of tears and the uncontrollable sobs that shook her body.

“Anybody you can call?”
His voice was soothing, and when Tiffany met his eyes through the screen door, she noticed something in his eyes which conveyed trust. There was a need inside her to trust him. So much, but every fibre in her told her to not open the door. Never again would she let the police take her to the station and treat her like a criminal.
She bit her lip again, desperately trying to figure out whom to call, when she said, “My brother.”
Harris nodded. “Thomas Terrill was charged with possession of drugs last year. You are noted as a witness.” He paused, checked his little notepad, and continued. “He’s also known as Josh Ford.”
Leaning her head against the door, Tiffany took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Are you okay, Miss Brooks?” Harris asked.
“Please open the door,” Jones requested.
Holding up her hand, she replied, “I haven’t seen him since then. I have nothing to do with whatever trouble he’s in.” Tears started to trickle down her cheeks, and she took another two deep breaths before standing straight to meet Harris’ gaze. He searched her eyes before he assented with a nod and held up a business card.
