DEFYING RULES

A little reminder in the last post, Addy returned home from work to find her house broken in.

DEFYING RULES is set along the Australian Great Ocean Road and tells the story of Ethan Tomlin, single dad, and manager of a hotel chain.

This is still a WIP, so critique away.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

And, he was a school parent. A big reason to not think of him as an attractive man. Or think of him at all.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
With heat creeping up her cheeks, she figured he meant the break in and nodded.
He scratched the back of his head. “I’m not your nosy neighbour, don’t get me wrong, but I saw the police and remembered Nick telling me your family’s in Melbourne. Anything I can help you with?”
She sighed inwardly. Not only attractive, but very generous as well. Shaking her head, she replied, “I’m fine, but I appreciate your offer.”
“Will you be all right to stay here on your own? I’m sure we can organise a room at the hotel for a few nights.”
Something stirred inside. His caring nature and his generosity were so overwhelming, and possibly the stress of the previous two hours, she didn’t want to but she started to cry.
Ethan stepped even closer and gently drew her into an embrace. Common sense told her to pull away, but it was such a relief to finally be able to let out all the pent-up emotions. The tension, the fear, and her body’s betrayal at the wrong time.

4 starsThe Romance Review – NEW BEGINNINGS is a very emotional read, one that is heartwarming as well as heart wrenching. It gives you hope in the act of human kindness and that good things do happen to good people. I highly recommend this book.

FLY WITH ME

This is Tiffany’s story, who receives a call from the police one morning forcing her to deal with a chapter from her past, which she is unhappy to revisit. When she calls her friend Dylan, it’s Mat from New Zealand she ends up talking to.

This is still a WIP, so critique away. It’s set partly in Melbourne, Australia, and in New Zealand.

Thanks … and enjoy 🙂

Tiffany went into the kitchen for a drink and as she filled and switched on the kettle, her mind went back to the conversation with Dylan’s friend Mat. She’d enjoyed the brief, although bizarre, conversation. His voice had been so happy and full of energy, it had taken her mind off her problem within only a few minutes. Something she hadn’t been able to achieve with the bath she’d taken later that morning. The whole hysteria from the previous year had crept up, leaving her anxious, tense, and with a headache. A nice cup of tea would hopefully do the trick. She thought of Mat’s laugh and her mouth curled in response. It’d been a deep hearty laugh. One of those laughs that could be contagious to anyone who heard it. Closing her eyes, she tried to remember whether Dylan had ever mentioned Mat’s name, but as much as she tried, she wasn’t able to recall ever hearing about a friend from New Zealand.

The whistling of the kettle drew her back from her thoughts, and she poured the water into her cup. Dipping the teabag in and out of the water, she recalled her conversation with Dylan.

“What’s up Tiff? I’ve got about three missed calls here.”

Relief rushed through her like a tidal wave, almost catching her breath. After all, most of her problems were half as bad once Dylan was there to help. Despite being Liam, her brother’s best friend, Dylan and Tiffany had become close during the year Liam had gone to London for a gap year.

“Why haven’t you ever told me about Mat?” Stunned by her own question, she slapped her forehead a couple of times wondering where the question had come from— especially as matters more important were on hand.

There was a quiet chuckle on the other end of the line and a bout of embarrassment rushed through her.

He thought of his friend’s comment about Tiffany’s rough year. Worry shot through him, and he wished he’d copied her number to his phone.

The sound of her voice was still playing in his head. A tone that stoked angst and concern.

Exhaling a long breath, Mat focussed back to the problem at hand and listened to the GPS directions — as well as following them. Thankfully, within only half an hour he found himself in an office opposite Karen Young, the representative of an Australian travelling agency.

A few months earlier, Mat had lost the coin toss between him and his partner Adam, and it was him now who was in Melbourne trying to negotiate a deal with Karen.

Mat and Adam had started their helicopter business five years ago in Fox Glacier, New Zealand. They’d liked the idea of doing what they loved every day and meeting people from all over the world at the same time. Now they flew hundreds of tourists to the summit of the glacier or hunters and hikers to inaccessible huts on the top of the mountains.

Today he was here to negotiate a deal to be part of a travel package for tourists, which included another venture in Queenstown, his hometown. He stepped into her small office, instantly overcome by some mild claustrophobia when he saw a small window with no view, but showing the walls of the building next door. Inhaling a breath, he forced himself to take in the rest of the office which was nicely decorated, with framed photos from all over the world.

Including his beloved Queenstown.

“What the fuck are you talking about?”
Mat’s laughter echoed in the small car as he turned off the engine and got out. With a few long strides, he headed towards the café. “Does Jess know about her?”
There was a groan on the other end of the line. “You start any rumours and I will kill you.”
As he stepped inside the cafe, Mat replied, “In all seriousness, mate, Tiffany was desperate to talk to you. You’d better give her a call, aye.”
“I’ve already talked to her, but I don’t—”
“I’m glad she was able to get hold of you. It was obvious she needed to talk to you.”
Mat held his phone away for a moment, smiled at the young woman behind the counter, and ordered his coffee.
”You’re still there?” Dylan asked with a loud voice.
Mat shook his head with a smile and explained. “Mate, I’d say even in Australia it’s considered rude to talk on the phone while ordering your coffee.”
His friend’s resigned sigh gave him another chuckle.
“Mate, if you’ve already talked to her, we’re all good, aye.”
“To be frank, I’m completely lost here. How the hell do you know about Tiff? Give me the courtesy and give me a quick run down of what’s happened.”

The GPS voice in Matiu Apanui’s car had as little of a clue as he did about the directions how to get to his meeting place and after only half an hour he was still on the western side of Melbourne instead of in the city. The explanation was as simple as Tiffany was on his mind. He replayed the phone conversation repeatedly in his head. It was clear to him something must’ve upset her. Even though she’d relaxed during their short conversation, he’d been able to sense the tension in her voice.
“Shit,” he shouted as he pressed the speed dial button on his phone, remembering he’d never left a note for his friend.
“Mate, where are you?” Dylan asked by way of answering.
“I have no idea. Near a big park. Looks pretty with the tree alongside the walking tracks. Had no idea Melbourne had all these deciduous trees—”
“Mat!”
“The lovely GPS lady took me on a tourist tour first it seems. I’m considering stopping for a coffee and reboot her at the same time.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Mat noticed the frustration in his friend’s voice and asked bluntly, “Tell me about your girlfriend.”
